Nov 5, 2010how do I select just three folders to sync from a directory?
View 8 Replieshow do I select just three folders to sync from a directory?
View 8 RepliesOK, here is the test code I am using: rsync -acrv /home/randy/Documents /media/USB2/testbackup. What should I put in the code so that when I delete something in the Documents folder, it will also be deleted in the testbackup folder when I perform a sync.
How can I have it so the code will check if USB2 is available, if it is, do the sync, if not, do nothing.
Ever since I had a hard drive that had an unexpected mechanical failure 2 years ago (& had to pay $1400 to have the drive pulled apart in a vacuum & copied), I've been understandably paranoid about ensuring I keep multiple up-to-date copies of my hard drive.Currently, I'm running 3 computers- The TV Computer, my Wife's Computer & my Main Computer. A second hard drive in the Main Computer & an external hard drive both act solely as backups for my Home folder. The TV Computer & my Wife's Computer also keep an identical Home Folder to my Main.I have ssh installed on all computer's & have made bookmarks via the Places Menu's 'Connect to Server', so obviously it's very easy for me to exchange files between computer's...
My problem is this; Every time I save/download/change a file, I have to copy it to 4 other hard drive's. It's kind of annoying. Can anyone suggest some ways for me to save some time with this? It's a wired network with static ip's. All 3 computers are pretty much turned on 24/7.I'm open to middle-of-the-night scheduled type of thing or whatever.
Is it possible to have all my Hotmail folders be synched with my Evolution? (by default it is only synch-ing Inbox)
I've searched these forums and seen this question raised by many but no clear answer on it yet...
I need a program to run on Ubuntu that must be easily set up to do a series of different cloning operations at specific times between the USB drives on a single Ubunu pc, depending on the day of the week." So on Monday folder B is forced to match folder A, Tuesday C forced to equal D ... and on Sunday a whole bunch of these clonings happen. This must all run unattended (at 2am) and be robust with no "what do you want to do next messages" or having the whole thing give up if there is a problem with one file. Though I do need a log of success or failure. Windows programs that do this stuff are FolderClone and GoodSync. I looked at Unison and Rsync and one or two others, but none appeared set up to do what I need, or to be excessively complex / general. I don't need something that can sync two copies, or over internet ....

I have a vimrc and a bashrc with some configuration, that are useful for both machines. What is the best way to sync them? Create a symlink for each file in my home folder pointing out to a the respectives files in my Dropbox sync folder? Is this possible (delete .bashrc and create a symlink instead)?

View 5 Replies View Related1. I have Ubuntu 10.04.1 installed alongside Windows Home premium 7 on a Compaq CQ5110f with 2 dual processors, 320 GB HDD, 4 gb Ram, less than a year old/ It is giving me some error messages. It is wanting to lock the drive or various programs after being left unused for a few minutes, I have not found where I can disable this. I do not need passwords, really. I am the only user. I reinstalled it once, on top of itself (Ubuntu) and it worked fine briefly, then started doing it all again.
I use to sometimes install Ubuntu as a windows app. on a previous version, maybe 9.04 - 9.10, but think I can not do it on this version?
So, Can I install as WIndows app on this version of Ubuntu? CAn I install Ubuntu on one drive alone, and windows on the other drive alone, install both in same computer and get dual booting? I think before, to do that I had to reset boot drives in BIOS to whichever I had the OS I wanted to use?
Or MUST they be installed on same drive for dual booting to be available?
I am attaching screen shots of the messages I get, etc. I have tried to share files and folders, but it does not allow me to select Share this folder as some security thing is not installed, And the time I am required to enter password to use comp[iter after being idle a few minutes, seems to be tied to my folder, which is JOHN. I may have to think about removing Ubuntu from this drive, add a SATA drive and use two, one for Windows and one for Ubuntu.
How can I sync files from Windows Server 2008 to a Linux box? Windows Server can sync files to another active-directory box automatically. Can i do that with linux too?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a folder on my workstation and I currently have an identical copy on my nas mounted via ifs (I'll be using this as my backup). The folder contains many virtual machines that are usually powered off. I like to think of the copy on my nas as a backup. The benefit of having two copies of my vms is that if I boot up too many on my workstation and the drive starts to cause a bottle neck I can simply boot the vms from the nas instead. (gigabit ethernet)
I would like changes I make to my local copy to be reflected on the nas.
I want this to happen In the background, I.e. If I turn off my machine it shouldnt cause a problem, the next time I boot up it just re checks the files and continues syncing the 2 directories.
What is the best tool for the job? Rsync?
I've never really used it before so a few pointers to get me going would be great, or obviously other recommendations if there are any.
To clarify: I have two kernels, (a) one that "works" and (b) another that I am experimenting with. Each has it's own modules directory tree (in /lib/modules) and they are mutually incompatible ie kernel (a) will only work with module tree (a) and similarly for (b). I have two boot entries in lilo.conf which can be selected from the boot menu.
Now the problem is, what if something goes wrong when I boot to (b)? I'd like to be able to return to the safe option (a), but the current module tree is (b) and it won't work with kernel (a). I could use the Slack installationCD and rename the module directory (I presume this would work)but is there a simpler way, whereby I can select the correct module tree at boot time (or set it in lilo.conf)?
I am using UbuntuOne (U1) with 2 computers. I connected with my desktop computer to sync with 3 of my directories (Documents, Projects and Public) and uploaded their contents. I connect to the U1 with my laptop and the Documents directory is no longer able to sync with U1. I right-click on the menu and select to Sync but it doesn't work.
The other folders have updated with no problems, just the Documents folder does not. The Documents folder in the Laptop is cleared out. I was going to sync, and then add the files already on the laptop to the directory and sync to move them up to the cloud (and thus, to download on my desktop the next time I log in).
May I know if there is any tutorial to sync up Fedora DS to ADS?

I've been using Ubuntu for over 5 years. This time I decided to upgrade UNR to the latest 10.10. I am now running it from USB to try it before installing. Excuse my ignorance, but whatever happened to the Terminal? I cannot find it anywhere! I think this release is not going in the right direction if one of the most important tools in Ubuntu is hidden from an average user.
Also, how do I change to the root directory in the files and folders? or at least to the higher directory structure.I won't be installing UNR 10.10 unless I figure out these BASIC things.
I recently used Dj Dup for the first time. I chose to backup my home folder and most dot folders (do most of you backup all your home dir dot folders?). Even though Dj Dup uses gpg, is there any sensitive data stored in dot folders within my home directory?
BTW, I did an incremental backup up to an older Dj Dup backup folder on my NTSF external HDD and got an error. Is this because it is NTFS? I then did an incremental backup to a backup folder on my PC (ext4) and got no error. In the picture attached, would that setting mean the backup will continue to grow to a huge size? Would it be better to keep backups for a week?
Just installed lamp, I can access phpmyadmin mysql is set up and everything. When I try to view a directory [URL] I get an access denied error.
EDIT: I changed the permissions of the "folder" folder itself, I can access everything in that directory now but not any other folders in it. Do I really need to go through every folder every time and change the permissions?
If someone manually partitions their home and root drives and overtime they end up with a lot of dot folders (.burgerspace for example) in their home directory. Is there a quick way to get rid of all the dot folders whose program is no longer installed? For example if I completely removed BurgerSpace in Synaptic, the .burgerspace folder would remain.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI need to share some files from my Ubuntu 10.10 box to others on my home network so I created a shared folder, right-clicked it and chose "Sharing Options", chose "Share This Folder" and then I was told that additional software is needed to enable sharing. I agreed and software was downloaded and installed. But when I clicked "Create Share" button and told Nautilus to automatically add permissions for others to access my folder, I was slapped with an error message saying "Failed to execute child process "testparm" (no such file or directory).
So how to proceed and get sharing working again? I installed Samba afterwards via Synaptic and assigned the folder for sharing, but I don't see the special "arrows-both-ways" sign for this folder.
I'm new to ubuntu (installed 3 days ago). I have two disks in my notebook - one hdd (big, 320GB) and one ssd (very fast, 120GB). Everything is on ssd now, but I want to know how can I split my home directory to make config folders (like .thunderbird, .mozilla, .purple) to use ssd (for very fast response), and put movies, pictures, downloads and other folders to use hdd (a lot of space). Simply mounting hdd as /home is not a good option, becouse config files would be on hdd also. Should I mount (or link) all folders like /home/username/Videos to hdd, or is there a better solution?
View 6 Replies View RelatedUnix - In Linux, how do I move all files and folders into a new directory?
View 4 Replies View Relatednew to ubuntu and linux, and using Lucid 10.04 LTS ok, i'm trying to get XBMC going, and following a nice step by step instruction on wiki.xbmc.org, but now i'm stuck at this step... In Ubuntu the SVN Repositories are not automatically added. You must add them manually. First, download the SVN Repo Installer from: [URL] Extract it to the ~/.xbmc/plugins/programs directory. If this directory does not exist, run XBMC one time and then exit back to Ubuntu. The directory should now exist.
i ran xbmc once (after the video driver problem was solved, though it messed up my dual monitors, gotta figure that one out yet.) i got the zip file, it's in my downloads. now my newbness really shows... i can't find an 'extract' command for gnome, can't find the .xbmc directory using the file browser, can't figure out how to hunt for folders instead of files, and don't know how to look inside folders i don't have permission to, that is, i don't know if there's a 'sudo' like option for the file browser. i've been searching the forums, but without the correct search terms, i'm wading in an ocean. i really want to give ubuntu an honest try, but i feel like a foreigner. EDIT: btw, up to this point, the forums have been invaluable, you all are great.
I am trying to find a directory named 480debugerror nested under child directories. I don't know the exact path, or even if I have the exact spelling of the directory I ant to find.
Is there any linux command to find directories with a given prefix or suffix, for example directories with a name of debug or debugerror, with unknown some prefix or suffix?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to create a simple bash script to rsync some folders within a directory stucture. I am using wild cards, in the rsync source directory structure, but my command always fails. I believe it is the way I am using wild cards within my for loop. Here is my command ;
Code:
for seq in `cat test.txt` ; do rsync -nvP /folder/folder/folder/folder/folder/**/$seq /folder/folder/folder/ ; done This always fails, where if I do a ls to the destination, to test the path, it always works.
I've got Ubuntu One syncing a single 25MB folder on 4 computers. On one of these computers, the ubuntuone-syncdaemon process constantly pegs the CPU, using from 50-80% long after any sync-able files have been modified and successfully synced. The process is only using 8.9MB of RAM.
Specs:
Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid)
Kernel 2.6.32-24-generic
1000.8 MB RAM
Pentium 4 2.53GHz
Free disk space: 280.9 GB
System monitor shows 56.8% total RAM usage, 15.4% swap file usage.
Audio sync method. "Stretches/squeezes" the audio stream to match the timestamps, the parameter is the maximum samples per second by which the audio is changed. -async 1 is a special case where only the start of the audio stream is corrected without any later correction.Searching the net makes one believe that this command is just some sort of magic.People just put it in the line and it just works. Isn't that nice?
It says nothing about how to change the TIME the audio starts syncing. Like do I want it to start 5 seconds delayed? Or what about 5 seconds sooner? What if the audio gets more out of sync as the video goes on? Can I slip it a little at a time? What? No magic? No one mentions a file that already has badly synced audio. So what -async 1 really does is simply start the audio at the beginning of the file. LIKE AS IF THAT ISN'T STANDARD PROCEDURE?So what is the exact solution to syncing a messed up video? And why can't it just do the proper "timestamp" sync in the first place? No docs, no info and you are left out in the cold.
I use jpilot on opensuse 11.3 64bit to sync pim data with my Palm Treo 680 via bluetooth. This worked fine until today. Now I get the following error message when I try to sync: Syncing on device bt: Press the HotSync button now dlp_ReadSysInfo error Exiting with status YNC_ERROR_PI_CONNECT Finished.
The last successfull sync was on the 20th October and today is the 24th October. I did not change any settings in jpilot or on my palm device. So I guess there must have been an update of opensuse which causes this error. But I do not now how to look up the updates during this period or how to undo them. Was there an update between the 20th and the 24th Oktober, which might affect either jpilot or bluetooth functionality?
I've discovered Firefox Sync a while ago, and it's absolutely awesome. Now of course I'd like most of my software to work this way! So is there a way to get the same behavior with Thunderbird?
