we connected the new hard disk in the folder /home /newhdd it has alot of files and we gave access to the folder /home via NFS When we attach a folder on the remote computer is on a remote computer folder newhdd empty, while the other folders in the directory /home full like on NFS servers.
View 1 RepliesI recently used D�j� Dup for the first time. I chose to backup my home folder and most dot folders (do most of you backup all your home dir dot folders?). Even though D�j� Dup uses gpg, is there any sensitive data stored in dot folders within my home directory?
BTW, I did an incremental backup up to an older D�j� Dup backup folder on my NTSF external HDD and got an error. Is this because it is NTFS? I then did an incremental backup to a backup folder on my PC (ext4) and got no error. In the picture attached, would that setting mean the backup will continue to grow to a huge size? Would it be better to keep backups for a week?
If someone manually partitions their home and root drives and overtime they end up with a lot of dot folders (.burgerspace for example) in their home directory. Is there a quick way to get rid of all the dot folders whose program is no longer installed? For example if I completely removed BurgerSpace in Synaptic, the .burgerspace folder would remain.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm new to ubuntu (installed 3 days ago). I have two disks in my notebook - one hdd (big, 320GB) and one ssd (very fast, 120GB). Everything is on ssd now, but I want to know how can I split my home directory to make config folders (like .thunderbird, .mozilla, .purple) to use ssd (for very fast response), and put movies, pictures, downloads and other folders to use hdd (a lot of space). Simply mounting hdd as /home is not a good option, becouse config files would be on hdd also. Should I mount (or link) all folders like /home/username/Videos to hdd, or is there a better solution?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI need to specify a different path to home directories on a particular server than what LDAP contains for the users, besides using a symlink. E.g. "/Users/jdoe" vs "/home/jdoe" I don't want to change the actual LDAP attributes, just want a particular server to point them in the right direction (Ubuntu 10.04).
I'm assuming it's something I could probably set in pam configurations?
On our network, we authenticate our users via LDAP and use autofs to mount their home directories. This works fine in Fedora 8. However, in Fedora 10, when the user logs in, it also mounts the home folders of the users that previously logged onto the system as well. This is what I see when I login as "user1" on Fedora 10

I configured my apache2. On my Intrepid I had apache2.0 while on my Karmic I have a apache2.2. Aftere configuring I tested it and got a an error page when I tested it in my web browser. I looked into the log file that showed the following error "[client 127.0.0.1] (13)Permission denied: access to /my_dir/ denied".
It appears apache2.2 can't access directories in my home folder. File system rights for the files and folders are correct. There is no AppArmor profile for Apache. User settings in "/etc/apache2/apache2.conf" file are correct. The inaccessible folder in "/etc/apache2/sites-available/default" looks as follows:

A trick using symbolic links didn't work either. On my previous Intrepid with Apache 2.0 my pages worked like a charm. Now on my current Karmic (before apache2.conf was pre configured, now it's not) with Apache 2.2 my pages are wrecked. how I can make Apache2.2 access folders in my home folder and which settings are needed in default file for that?
Just installed lamp, I can access phpmyadmin mysql is set up and everything. When I try to view a directory [URL] I get an access denied error.
EDIT: I changed the permissions of the "folder" folder itself, I can access everything in that directory now but not any other folders in it. Do I really need to go through every folder every time and change the permissions?
Does anyone know what software creates them? Can I safely delete them?

I have an interdependent collection of scripts in my ~/bin directory as well as a developed ~/.vim directory and some other libraries and such in other subdirectories. I've been versioning all of this using git, and have realized that it would be potentially very easy and useful to do development and testing of new and existing scripts, vim plugins, etc. using a cloned repo, and then pull the working code into my actual home directory with a merge.
The easiest way to do this would seem to be to just change & export $HOME, eg
cd ~/testing; git clone ~ home
export HOME=~/testing/home
cd ~
screen -S testing-home
# start vim, write/revise plugins, edit scripts, etc.
# test revisions
However since I've never tried this before I'm concerned that some programs, environment variables, etc., may end up using my actual home directory instead of the exported one. Is this a viable strategy? Are there just a few outliers that I should be careful about?
Ever since I had a hard drive that had an unexpected mechanical failure 2 years ago (& had to pay $1400 to have the drive pulled apart in a vacuum & copied), I've been understandably paranoid about ensuring I keep multiple up-to-date copies of my hard drive.Currently, I'm running 3 computers- The TV Computer, my Wife's Computer & my Main Computer. A second hard drive in the Main Computer & an external hard drive both act solely as backups for my Home folder. My problem is this; Every time I save/download/change a file, I have to copy it to 4 other hard drive's. It's kind of annoying.Can anyone suggest some ways for me to save some time with this? It's a wired network with static ip's. All 3 computers are pretty much turned on 24/7.I'm open to middle-of-the-night scheduled type of thing or whatever.

As you can (maybe) see, my entire /home folder is shared. For various reasons, I'd prefer it if only say my music and videos were shared, how do I do that? I've looked around the web and seen some other people's samba.conf files but mine looks totally different and I don't want to lose the functionality I have by messing around with it.

I'm trying to restrict a particular ssh user to his home directory, I'm just giving him access so that he can ssh to another server that is only accessible from the former but restrict his movement so that he can't poke around the former.I already made some changes to sshd_config file and added the following line at the end:
Did some test, user joe can ssh to the server but unable to do anything aside from logging in, even a simple ls command will immediately close the putty session. I have a shared NTFS partition ("shared") that I use for data for both Windows and Ubuntu. How can I mount the music folder on shared to $Home/Music, and the Videos folder on shared to $Home/Videos? I want to mount the different folders on the partition to different folders in home.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed FC10 and then used yumex to install the vsftpd FTP daemon package. I'm using the vsftpd.conf file that came with the distribution, and its almost identical to one I copied from my FC2 machine's working set-up. When I try to FTP in as a known system user I'm presented with my home directory /home/myusername/. The directory appears empty to the FTP program, but isn't in reality. I can't upload a file to the empty home directory. I can move up the directory hierarchy to /home/, but again that appears as an empty directory.
I don't think it's a vsftpd.conf file issue. I've tried everything I can there. Could it have something to do with permissions? I fiddled with those, but couldn't make an FTP directory listing work.

I am looking into encrypting some data on a Fedora samba server. I'm not entirely sure the best way to do this. The server is currently running Fedora 5 but it can be updated if necessary.
I would prefer if the server could be booted up and that no interaction at the server itself have to be done so that users can access their shares.
Is there a way for the data to be encrypted on the server but when the user access the share over samba that it can be accessed?
The research i have done so far seems to point towards methods more intended for a desktop setup. Such as entering passwords at bootup or when opening folders.
I have an SFTP server using OpenSSH on a server running Fedora 12. I want to chroot my sftponly users into their home directory but I want to let them have write access to their upload/ folder. Right now users can log in and view & download items, but for some reason I can't get write access to work. Here's some info:

I have 10.04 and have samba running.
Samba is remotely administered with webmin and aim to setup home directory sharing. I am however having some trouble getting this to work.
I was of the understanding that home directory sharing allows me to create a user in ubuntu, which samba will then pickup and offer it up as a share.
My smb.conf looks like this..

Essentially I've found this works providing I give the samba user a password after it is automatically created using the 'Configure automatic Unix and Samba user synchronisation' option in webmin.
However if I move the location of this home folder off the main drive i.e. /home/username I get turned away at attempted login.
I've tried specifying the path in [homes] using the path = /media/discarray, but this seems to break authentication somehow.
Vanilla install of Karmic (64 bit) - would like to change the Apache doc root to point to /home/sam/www as it's my web development machine. (Default install is working fine)

I need to share some files from my Ubuntu 10.10 box to others on my home network so I created a shared folder, right-clicked it and chose "Sharing Options", chose "Share This Folder" and then I was told that additional software is needed to enable sharing. I agreed and software was downloaded and installed. But when I clicked "Create Share" button and told Nautilus to automatically add permissions for others to access my folder, I was slapped with an error message saying "Failed to execute child process "testparm" (no such file or directory).
So how to proceed and get sharing working again? I installed Samba afterwards via Synaptic and assigned the folder for sharing, but I don't see the special "arrows-both-ways" sign for this folder.
I can not use nfs from F10 client to F12 server. nfs mount on F10 to F12 times out anf nfs4 mount gives "mount.nfs4: mounting localhost:/home failed, reason given by server: No such file or directory" I have tried to close firewall and set selinux to permissive mode on both client and server with same result. Samba works fine. On server [root@flokipal ~]# mount -t nfs4 localhost:/home /media/tonlist mount.nfs4: mounting localhost:/home failed, reason given by server: No such file or directory

I've setup Kerberos and OpenLDAP servers (9.10) similar to the official documentation (and other sites that fill in the "gaps"). However, when you start to get in to some of the details, there seem to be many options - and I guess I'm looking for what could be the defacto standard. I'd like to allow Ubuntu clients to have a sso capability, with the ability for local caching of passwords if not connected to the network (such as a laptop user away from the office, prior to a VPN). I'd like to automount a secure NFS share somewhere in the /home directory. If the user logs in to a computer they've not logged in to before (if they're authorized), it would be nice if a skeleton /home directory could be setup there automatically I'm guessing that it is not desirable to use a shared /home NFS - as if you're off the network this would be problematic - as well as multiple computers sharing the same /home. There are some benefits to a shared /home (SSH certs, etc.), so maybe there is a hybrid approach out there.
I've read that it's not necessarily good practice to have OpenLDAP to do the authentication (leave this to Kerberos), but it's fine for authorization (such as ACLs for logins to certain computers). It's also good practice to use TLS with OpenLDAP (which requires public certs on all the clients) and to not allow anonymous read to the directory. I would guess that a computer host keytab could be refreshed to bind to the OpenLDAP server via GSSAPI / SASL to allow a non-anonymous read, and then determine if, say, the user was a member of a group allowed to log in. Kerberos would then pick up and authenticate the user and then proceed to the login. Off the network here, I'm not sure. I found this document, but it's self declared missing items: [URL]
I'll stop the rambling, but I cannot be the only one who would like to setup a relatively standard and secure server based network authentication and authorization back-end. Is there any _complete_ documentation on the best practices and how to implement?
iam learning to setup a NFS server with fedora14. I have gone through couple of materials for this topic. I have a doubt. Say if i have user1 till user5 on my NFS server with their home directory under the /home and the /home directory is shared. If user1 logs into a client machine then will he be able to see home folders for the other users or just his own home folder. Because in the /etc/exports file there was an option saying "subtree" and according to my understanding this means that the subdirectories under /home will also be shared. Does that mean all the users should be able to see all other users home directory and its contents but not read/write?? Correct me if iam wrong.

I am having problems setting up SFTP on a Red Hat server to clamp users down to their home directory. I have created the user, removed /bin/bash login shell and replaced with the below in the passwd file. The user can login by sftp but can browse around the server and download any files apart from other users file. Have also assigned the user over to the sftp user group.

I now have my ssh server all setup on my ubuntu 10.10 machine and properly working with a private rsa key. Anyway when I connect to it via my client it opens to: /home/myusername
I am able to run around the whole drive and have full access to everything, which is great. But I don't have anything on this hard drive. All my data and files that I really want to access are on the second drive of this computer. It doesn't have an OS on it, just files.how to change the directory to point to that drive and have full access of everything.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have attached a 2 TB LUN to the HP Blade Server running CentOS 5.3 via a Qlogic HBA. To provide the cluster users with sufficient storage areaa, I want to move only the home directory from the default partitioning schema to the attached storage and leave the remaining partitions on the main harddrive of the server. So, having copied user directories & files to the new location, i.e.,
/cluster/home2 on the new storage partition, what modification(s) should I make on the server?
/export/home is the default location for the users.
/cluster/home2 is NFS shared directory serving as the new home location for the users.
i am getting weird results after mounting the /home directory from the server. seems like the client sees the ldapuser and it's directory from the server side.. /home/ldapuser. but it's pulling the "blank" user as it's permission. blank is the actual user on the client side. any ideas why?
