Ubuntu :: Finding Folders - Extracting Files - Permission - Directory Does Not Exist

Aug 28, 2010

new to ubuntu and linux, and using Lucid 10.04 LTS ok, i'm trying to get XBMC going, and following a nice step by step instruction on wiki.xbmc.org, but now i'm stuck at this step... In Ubuntu the SVN Repositories are not automatically added. You must add them manually. First, download the SVN Repo Installer from: [URL] Extract it to the ~/.xbmc/plugins/programs directory. If this directory does not exist, run XBMC one time and then exit back to Ubuntu. The directory should now exist.

i ran xbmc once (after the video driver problem was solved, though it messed up my dual monitors, gotta figure that one out yet.) i got the zip file, it's in my downloads. now my newbness really shows... i can't find an 'extract' command for gnome, can't find the .xbmc directory using the file browser, can't figure out how to hunt for folders instead of files, and don't know how to look inside folders i don't have permission to, that is, i don't know if there's a 'sudo' like option for the file browser. i've been searching the forums, but without the correct search terms, i'm wading in an ocean. i really want to give ubuntu an honest try, but i feel like a foreigner. EDIT: btw, up to this point, the forums have been invaluable, you all are great.

Ubuntu Servers :: Set Permission For Future Public Files / Folders?

Jan 2, 2010

I just set up an VPS with ubuntu. I made a user1 and gave it ownership

Code:
chown -R user1 /home/www

This user also have been given all the root privileges (I know it is not recommended!)

The problem is that each time I make new site, and user1 wants to upload (through ftp) files to /home/www/newsite I need to redo the the above command in order to be enable user1 to upload. Not only this, I need to rework permissions (744 for folders and 644 for files), otherwise the newsite throws permission errors message.

Software :: Directory Listing Of Files That Don't Exist?

Oct 16, 2010

I think as a result of a script that started duplicating files in a loop, the allotted capacity on my VPS filled up with multiple nested copies of the same files... After a reboot, I could delete most of them, but got rm stalled in certain directories...

after isolating which ones, I found this: a directory listing that lists the files, and at the same time tells me they are not there!!!

partial listing:

Code:
ls
ls: cannot access userkey.php: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access workshop.php: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access quiz.php: No such file or directory
ls: cannot access webservice_rest.php: No such file or directory

Ubuntu Security :: Finding Two Strange-looking Files On Windows Shared Folders?

Mar 30, 2011

Recently I've been finding two strange-looking files on my Windows shared folders! Their names are 'khy' and 'qffhtx.exe', they appear as hidden, and they're hard to delete!! especially the first one because it has no extension. I use Ubuntu 10.10, but I am worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP. Today I tried to open the .exe file in nautilus to see what is inside and I received the message "Unable to open archive", 'khy' is apparently an empty text file. Then I unmounted my /home partition so my files are out of the way, and I ran the .exe file using WINE,

Now I have a strange-looking applet on my top panel!! and it says "Script paused", also it says "Exit', and also Wine command prompt says something strange about "LockWindowUpdate", don't imagine it I'll post the screenshots so you can see it for yourselves. Also --and this is weird-- the virus apparently is trying to call a Windows process named csrcs.exe!! Again, I'll post the screenshots.

If this is a virus, then it's like a fish out of the water on my Ubuntu, it's probably trying to do something but it can't find its way around, it's kinda funny, but Im worried because I also dual-boot Windows XP, I'm having a hard time trying to remember the name KHY, it's a very weird acronym, it's the acronym of a disease, according to what I googled, i'm sure it's a virus!!! Anyway it's HARD to remember!!!

what can I do about this? How can I see the "script"? can Ubuntu kick its ***?how can I clean my Windows?

Ubuntu :: UNR 10.10 - Change To The Root Directory In The Files And Folders?

Oct 13, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for over 5 years. This time I decided to upgrade UNR to the latest 10.10. I am now running it from USB to try it before installing. Excuse my ignorance, but whatever happened to the Terminal? I cannot find it anywhere! I think this release is not going in the right direction if one of the most important tools in Ubuntu is hidden from an average user.

Also, how do I change to the root directory in the files and folders? or at least to the higher directory structure.I won't be installing UNR 10.10 unless I figure out these BASIC things.

Mar 30, 2010

I recently started using SVN with Apache for my web development, although I find it really annoying that I have to issue two SVN commands (one local, one remote) to update my web site. I have been looking into SVN post-commit hooks to solve this problem. The only problem is that apache does not have permission to modify files in my user directory... So here is how everything is setup. I am running Slackware 13 full install. There have been no installations overriding any of the default installs.

General :: Extracting Absolute Directory From Type Command?

Sep 26, 2010

I need to extract the absolute directory from the type command when I pass it a program name. E.g.

Code:

>type cat
cat is hashed (/bin/cat)

There is one other case (I believe):

Code:

>type lpr
lpr is /usr/bin/lpr

I thought of using regex, but it returns the whole line, not just the match. In addition, there is no option cited in the man page for type that returns just the command directory.

Note: this is part of my solution to a programming assignment in bash shell scripting.

Ubuntu Networking :: Extracting Files For Ndiswrap Failing

Feb 8, 2010

is that my ar928x atheros wireless connection is severely slow. To fix it I've heard ndiswrap and so I've downloaded the XP driver from HP's support site (a pavilion dv7-1450us Notebook PC) and met a brick wall. The file is sp45222.exe and it contains seemingly no .bin .inf or .sys files that ndiswrap dearly requires. I've tried extracting it on a windows machine with UniExtract. This gives only three files one of which UniExtract can extract into a compilation of folders none of which have the required files. I've also attempted to use cabextract on my Ubuntubox, but not cabs come out. I have unshield, if that's relevant at all. What on Earth am I doing wrong?
