what I'm doing, but I'm implementing some automatic security protocols on a ubuntu system, and I need to see a list of all users, including system ones. The reason for this is that I created a system user with a specific UID, and I forgot it. The 'user' command only lists the nonsystem users.
View 3 RepliesI am trying to set my java path so that it is in effect for all users including the root user. I set the path correctly in /etc/profile and that works for my personal user, but when i try to run the same commands using sudo, i get messages saying that it can't find the java path.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Asterisk 1.2 running on a SPARC Solaris machine with a number of extensions, queues and so on configured and working well. Recently I wanted to create an IVR including a PIN verification system, enabling a user to call the number, hear a message (welcome, enter your PIN, etc), enter his PIN in the DISA application and hear another message afterwards without any further input. I can call the extension (IVR), hear the message and input my PIN, though after that I'm left with a dialtone and Asterisk waiting for me to enter a number(extension to call). If I do this, it forwards me correctly, though I'd prefer an intermediate step including a message for the user.
User calls number.
User is greeted with 'Enter your PIN,etc'.
User enters PIN code, followed by a '#'.
User hears another message 'Thank you. Now you can...etc'.
User then provides further input, etc.

I am researching how to make an effective backup on Ubuntu Server. This server will have Vsftp, VPN, Samba stuff , many other added packages +many printers, many users + data. I know I can use tar for the data /u no problem. 1. I was testing tar on the /home directory on a few user directories. I then created a new directory and did a restore of the users directories on it. I noticed the /home/user owner and group were root. The files in each directory remained the same. This gave me concern. If I had a crash and had to restore these to a new HD. I would have to change these, what else would I need to change? 2. Since I have many config files, how do I back up them? I know I can do a dump, but then users shouldn't be on the system. The system files will change as they add users, printers, etc, and asking users to not work, is not really an option while dump is running. I thought I could do a tar on whole system. (cron late at night .. not as many users) Then in event of crash of HD.
1. Boot from live cd
2. format the new drive
3. tar back in the whole system
Will this work right? Is there something I am missing?

My system is SUSE 11.1 I want to see who is connected via SSH. For instance, I have users connected using FileZilla. I can see in th e/etc/var/messages that they authenticated/connected, but I can't see if they have since disconnected or not.
Also, about 3 years ago I used to use Fedora for my SSH and in the sshd_config I'd make custom logs for each account, specify which user accounts were possible, port number, etc, etc. Is this possible to do using the SUSE linux? Any links on how to do this on suse? I haven't used linux in 3 years and can't find my old sshd_config files to take a glance...I did look at the sshd_config on SUSE, but it looks very different.

I had previously had the same symptoms on wheezy, but had fixed it by changing "UID_MIN" to 500 in /etc/login.defs

Command seems to be the easiest way to display users but it specifies all users log times.
I've also fiddled with the lastlog command to no avail.
It is possible to check who logged in with "who" command. If we are also logged in to that linux pc.
But, is there any possibility to check without our login?(not even by ssh)
Our logging in to find that pc, will be wasting the cpu resources. And may disturb the user who is working on the x-session.
I need to see who all the Samba users are. Some other distros keep that in /etc/samba/smbpassword file but I don't have that file here.

I'm working in a school and we have a Apple server, we have many problem with it. So, I would install a linux server instead.
Anyway, there is just one big problem (or I miss a simple tip to do it )
We have 1300 students. If I must create them one by one, that will take a lot of time. Actually with the apple server, we can go on a web interface & import an excel list with theses columns :
"Name", "Login", "Password", "Class", "Group", "HDD Space", "Print quota", "Internet access or not", etc ...
Due to this tool, I can upload an excel files with my 1300 students & a couple hours after, they have an account with a personal space & a shared space with their class.
My question is : This tool exist on Debian/Linux world ?
I have FC-4 with Squid and Dansguardian. Internet Users in my organisation are configured to use proxy with 8080 in browser IE. There's no issue with Users as DG working perfect for them. We have Business Development Team, as they need to do most of the research over internet, their IP's are included into "Exception IP List" in Dansguardian. Obviously these people will be excepted from all banned sites, BD Team able to do chat, play games and do social networking and other stuff over the net, which results in more bandwidth consumption and breaking office policies.
I have tried to implement SQUID ACL's to block few sites like " meebo.com, orkut.com,facebook.com etc" but SQUID acl's not coming into picture. any one who successfully blocked chat, banned sites and social networking in DG with my case.
I'm niomi and I'm the first account with sudo. I add an account, bob. niomi can get in reliably on active mode. (maybe relevant?: passive doesn't work) bob is jailed to his home directory, niomi is in ftp-special which gives her access to /. bob can't log in and his shell is set to bin/false. What could have gone wrong?

View 4 Replies View Relatedwe have a server running with Suse linux many years. Meanwhile we changed server hardware about 4 times, mostly also updating to newest Suse version. We used to copy group, passwd and shadow to a backup medium, installed the new system and restored those files onto the new system and all was running fine. Now, some weeks ago we installed 11. on new hardware and after restoring those 3 files after rebooting the system hangs when starting GUI. I can boot into runlevel 3 and login with no problem, but when I boot into runlevel 5 mouse and keyboard are frozen. Also when starting GUI from runlevel 3 with startx mouse and keyboard immediately freeze. If I restore the files group, passwd and shadow as they came from fresh new installation I can reboot and login in runlevel 5 without problems.
OK, if I compare the userlist, as it is generated bei installation,there are some usernames I formerly not had in older Suse versions. I don�t know if this can make problems? I tried to edit the files, to combine the system users from 11.2 with the list of local user names from the old system but without success, again the mouse and keyboard freeze.So some questions arise:1) Why now mouse and keyboard freeze in xsystem, when there are changes in the user list (but only in runlevel 5)2) What is the correct way to save and restore users and groups from old to new system. I googled several hours but did not find a smart way. Maybee someon can point me to a link or a howto where I find the solution
