Debian :: List Users At Login?

Just installed Debian on a laptop. I'm not a Linux noob, been running Ubuntu / Kubuntu / Fedora elsewhere for a while. But first time with Debian (Gnome). [Broadly pretty happy so far. It may supplant Kubuntu on my desktop as the latter seems a bit of a resource hog.]I want the login screen to offer a list of users.I've tried System > Administration > Login Window > Localand chosen Themed with face browser from the dropdown marked Style:I'm using Bijou (though I've also tried some of the others) as my theme, in case that makes any difference.I haven't got any pictures set up for users. It's not particularly that that I want, just a list of users to choose from rather than having to type in your username each time. It's a family setup, no big security worries, so easing typing would be nice.

When you boot up Ubuntu, you are presented with the login screen, with a list of users that can access the machine. I want to be able to only show certain users in that list, and hide others.

I'm using jessie and since I upgraded from wheezy, gdm3 no longer shows a list of users in the logon screen. (I can still log on by selecting "other users").
I had previously had the same symptoms on wheezy, but had fixed it by changing "UID_MIN" to 500 in /etc/login.defs

I'm working in a school and we have a Apple server, we have many problem with it. So, I would install a linux server instead.
Anyway, there is just one big problem (or I miss a simple tip to do it )
We have 1300 students. If I must create them one by one, that will take a lot of time. Actually with the apple server, we can go on a web interface & import an excel list with theses columns :
"Name", "Login", "Password", "Class", "Group", "HDD Space", "Print quota", "Internet access or not", etc ...
Due to this tool, I can upload an excel files with my 1300 students & a couple hours after, they have an account with a personal space & a shared space with their class.
My question is : This tool exist on Debian/Linux world ?

How would I list 4 users ID numbered 10, 11, 12 and 13 from my users list and output them to a file busers where their names are numbered by ascending order? How would I accomplish that on a one line command?

I'm trying to get samba working on a debian/xebian box to use as a fileserver. I have a HTPC which is win 7 and a laptop which is OS X. I've installed SWAT and Samba to manage the whole settings. I'm trying to get it setup so that there's a user which has access to my ~/ and a guest user which just has read access to ~/Media/ so that the Media centre can read all the files from it without having to login.
The problem is when I have map to guest set as NEVER I can access the samba ~/ and I'm asked for a username and password which I login with fine and can access the files on both share ~/ and ~/Media. However when I set the map to guest to bad user or bad password I can access the share for ~/Media. But when I try and access the share ~/ I don't get any login box and I immediately get the error "Can't access share permission denied" or an error along those lines.
Here's my /etc/samba/smb.conf

i've written a bash script to add new users to our system. the script works so I won't bother you all about that. when a new user is created with it, they can immediately login to our domain from any terminal, which is good. However, the newly created user is unable to login to debian at all, and so cannot access the server. when attempting to do so, they get a message like "the system administrator has disabled your account". This is a good thing really as normal users have no need for debian login, but I do need to add a few admin users who will need direct access to the server machine.
/usr/sbin/useradd -g smbusers -d /home/$username -s /bin/false -m $username
passwd $username
smbpasswd -a $username
This is the code I'm using to add the user. The rest of my script is just a wrapper and GUI. I figure the login shell may have something to do with it, so I tried changing the shell of a user to the default /bin/bash. This resulted in the user being able to login - sort of. Gnome doesn't load though, and there's a cascade of errors across the screen about things failing to save or load settings. mostly stuff like nautilus, X, and gnome. the desktop background is black and there's no interface. Logging in with a previously existing account works fine though. Clearly I have an issue somewhere.

i have a NIS master server and 4 NIS clients. out of 4 nis clients two are acting as login servers ie users will login and do all their stuffs and the remaining two are application servers. But sometimes users login into applications servers and started doing all their developer's job. i want to allow only a limited number of users tointo this application users not all the users who are all part of the nis domain.all the systems are running RHEL 5.4 on hp's proliant x86_64 based servers. Please advice me how should i proceed? enabling ip tables is not possible in my environment.

I've set up password-less login for user1 on a Ubuntu machine to login automatically into a Fedora box using the publickey authentication method. Everything is working smoothly. Now, there is a user2 on Fedora but he does not have an account on Ubuntu.
I tried to login as user2 from Ubuntu to but got the following error :

Predictably neither scp or sftp work either. I have several questions as a result.
1.Is the SSH server rejecting user2 login because I am inadvertently using user1 keys (as I am logged in as user1) ?
2. Do I need to have a user2 account on Ubuntu and public/private key authentication setup with Fedora for user2 to be able to login ?
3. Is there a method I can use to password login as user2 from Ubuntu to Fedora (even though there is no user2 account on Ubuntu) AND still keep password-less login for user1 or do I have to have password-less login for both ?
At present the only way to access the user2 account from Ubuntu is to SSH using the user1 account and then su to user2.

what I'm doing, but I'm implementing some automatic security protocols on a ubuntu system, and I need to see a list of all users, including system ones. The reason for this is that I created a system user with a specific UID, and I forgot it. The 'user' command only lists the nonsystem users.

My system is SUSE 11.1 I want to see who is connected via SSH. For instance, I have users connected using FileZilla. I can see in th e/etc/var/messages that they authenticated/connected, but I can't see if they have since disconnected or not.
Also, about 3 years ago I used to use Fedora for my SSH and in the sshd_config I'd make custom logs for each account, specify which user accounts were possible, port number, etc, etc. Is this possible to do using the SUSE linux? Any links on how to do this on suse? I haven't used linux in 3 years and can't find my old sshd_config files to take a glance...I did look at the sshd_config on SUSE, but it looks very different.

I need to figure out a bash command to list all users logged in at or after 5pm - 5pm being the specifier in the command.
Code:
Command seems to be the easiest way to display users but it specifies all users log times.
I've also fiddled with the lastlog command to no avail.

It is possible to check who logged in with "who" command. If we are also logged in to that linux pc.
But, is there any possibility to check without our login?(not even by ssh)
Our logging in to find that pc, will be wasting the cpu resources. And may disturb the user who is working on the x-session.

I have FC-4 with Squid and Dansguardian. Internet Users in my organisation are configured to use proxy with 8080 in browser IE. There's no issue with Users as DG working perfect for them. We have Business Development Team, as they need to do most of the research over internet, their IP's are included into "Exception IP List" in Dansguardian. Obviously these people will be excepted from all banned sites, BD Team able to do chat, play games and do social networking and other stuff over the net, which results in more bandwidth consumption and breaking office policies.
I have tried to implement SQUID ACL's to block few sites like " meebo.com, orkut.com,facebook.com etc" but SQUID acl's not coming into picture. any one who successfully blocked chat, banned sites and social networking in DG with my case.

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.4 - and used it quite successfully as the adminstrator user. But when I add additional users they can't login - to be exact, their password is accepted, and they get a screen with nothing except Ubuntu's pink/purple background.The mouse pointer moves around but clicking the mouse does nothing.

PC conked out the day before I was due to leave the country, so in the few hours I had to try and knock up a solution, I set up a very old second machine in the house running openSUSE 11.3 with XFCE. I'd previously replaced the default login display manager with GDM, which evidently has various bugs. Aside from the cursor continually spinning around showing as busy, when I added a new user account for my parents, the login box showed two entries under my own name. It's only on hovering the mouse over the latter entry that my parents' username shows up. Anyway, I had to explain this and a million other quirks to them in a rush, but the system was all working and they managed to get me an email from it the following day.
Since then, however, when they reach the login screen they say there is just an image of a computer monitor, with the OS version and domain, but no usernames to choose from or other options anywhere, and hence they can find no way to login. I have no remote access to the machine and can only talk over the phone. I suggested a few key combos to see if anything happened, and they booted once in failsafe mode, but no luck.
What could have happened? Is there a key that would show the users again? Perhaps there's a way to get to a console login, but could they get back to a GUI easily after that? nfortunately my parents are really not adept at these things and every instruction I give has to be repeated endlessly after which they usually get it wrong a couple of times first, so trying to do anything administrative or more clever than a few key presses or mouse clicks is going to be nigh on impossible. Running a live CD would be likely out of the question since they'd need to change the BIOS boot order first

I have an RHEL 5.3 system where NIS logins are working perfectly, but authentication doesn't seem to be working for non-root local users. I can't login either remotely or at the console with a local user, and I can't even su to them unless I'm doing so from root (i.e. when no password is required).
I've reset the password, I've deleted and recreated the user, and nothing. nsswitch.conf does have "files" listed as part of the config, which was really the main place I'd have assumed the issue could be. su gives "incorrect password", and ssh gives "userauth failure". /var/log/secure shows "su: pam_listfile(su:auth): Refused user <username> for service su", and same for the ssh attempts (with ssh in for su, of course). I've reviewed my pam.d files, and they seem to be the same as on a working machine, but I'm not 100% conversant with pam so I might be missing something.

I need to create a number of internal Linux users for admin purposes. I do not want these users to appear on the initial console login page just after Fedora boots up, as users who can attempt to log in, and I do not want to allow these users to log in directly. I merely want these users to be accessed via su, just like the root user.

Meaning when I turn on the computer, it automatically logs into the family account; and they never need to enter any passwords.Second, under System -> Administration -> Users and Groups (users-admin from terminal) there is a "Don't ask for password on login" option (toggle) which is desirable for this family account. However, I have never seen this option enabled, but always grayed out. Is there any way to enable this option?In short, I want:1) For the family account never to require a password on login.2) Automatically log into the family account on boot.
