It has come to my attention that if my laptop's screen (not the computer itself) is put to sleep, then connectivity stops until it is woken up again. This is very annoying! how to prevent this / how to work out

Networking :: Connectivity Stops On Fc12?

Jun 9, 2010

I am installing fc12 in a datacenter that does not yet support fc12. I have fc12 successfully running on several other machines in a different unmanaged datacenter. Here is my problem. After booting the machine I run a data transfer intensive operation. I use scp to transfer a 1GB file. After some percentage, 10 to 30, the network appears to go away. No ping, ssh, traceroute, etc are successful (in or out). At the KVM console I can check the status of the network service, it indicates its up. Restarting network, turning off iptables, ifdown/ifup do not have any effect. Only a system reboot will temporarily allow network connectionifconfig show LOTS of RX errors and dropped packets.

Ubuntu :: Hdparm Not Putting HDD's To Sleep?

Dec 12, 2010

Im wanting to put HDD's to sleep using hdparm after 20min of activity (a 4x disk raid5 array and two single disks). I have edited /etc/hdparm.conf, adding the following lines at the end of the file:

Code:

#6TB RAID5 POWER DOWN
/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_ST32000542AS_5XW0T1R6 {
spindown_time = 240

[code]....

Code:

sudo hdparm -y /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_SAMSUNG_HD501LJS0MUJDWQ411622

The HDD's will sleep with out issue. Ive looked around my log files and cant seem to find anything to do with hdparm, or the HDD's sleeping. Have I make a mistake in the .conf file? Is there some place hdparm logs, or if I can activate some sort of verbose mode? Or does hdparm need to be activated on boot?

EDIT: I'm using ubuntu 10.04.1 x64 last updated today.

My display still goes to sleep and I am prompted for my password when I leave the computer unattended.

I would like to be able to hit the "Lock Screen" app I added to the top panel to lock my screen, but otherwise I would like it to just stay on.

Ubuntu Networking :: AR5001 Chipset - Wireless Networking Randomly Loses Connectivity And Can Not Regain Connectivity

Jun 25, 2011

Wife's laptop has AR5001 Wireless Adapter laptop model is Toshiba Satellite A215

Problem : Wireless networking randomly loses connectivity and can not regain connectivity, the only apparent solution is a full power down , this is not even certain to work. The card works under Windows, she hates Windows. (I love her for this) I know it's not faulty hardware , because it will work for days on end under Windows without problems.

Things I've tried : madwifi drivers (any and all versions available) : These increase stability of the signal and seem to delay the inevitable however it still happens. When using these drivers the only option is to unload them modprobe -r then reboot then remove them again and re add them. It makes no sense why this works, and if I don't remove them prior to rebooting it will not work.

ATH5K drivers : These are pretty much junk, results are unpredictable at best, sometimes it will work perfectly for a few hours, sometimes it will not work at all. Nothing is repeatable, I can't seem to force whatever condition is causing this. rfkill does not show the wifi being blocked (hard or soft), unblocking it anyway does nothing, only way to make this work and it's iffy is to fully power down wait 5-10 minutes turn it back on and it MAY decide to work.

Firmware update : Updated the Toshiba BIOS to the latest version of the firmware 2.0 no joy here either. Same issue both sets of drivers.

Tried different distros and kernels : I've tried Mint 9, 10 ,11 ; Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04 , 9.10 and 11.04 (which is currently installed) , Fedora and OpenSUSE. All are giving the same problems. I have also tried a slew of different kernels no joy from any of them (I'm not at the computer with the issue now I will post exactly what kernel versions I've used when I have access to the machine).

Another useful bit of information, the hard switch to disable/enable wifi WILL disable it but turning it back on does absolutely nothing. The hotkey does nothing at all. The bios does not have an option to disable or enable the wireless card.

I will also post the typical lsmod , lspci , iwconfig all that good stuff when I get back to the computer in question. I'm probably just going to buy a PC card for it and give up on that one, but this is driving me insane and I would really like to see it resolved even if I do replace the hardware.

Ubuntu :: Resolutions For Black Screen Of Sleep?

Aug 13, 2011

I generally suspend between work sessions. Occasionally, after a long time of running, my display goes black and is unresponsive. This seems to happen when I have fallen asleep while working. Now, I don't think someone has sneaked in and done something to my computer! Anyway, all the applications are still running (observed by bringing up the console, top/ps) but the X session does not respond. I have tried the Control-Alt-Backspace keystroke that is suggested for restarting X Window.

Over several times, I have experimented with killing specific processes from the console to see if I could restore life to the session, without having to shutdown. Today I noted that if I blast the compiz process it did come back. Of course, there may well be a specific combination of steps I did before that step that resulted in it working.

Ubuntu :: Lock Screen After Sleep/Hibernate But NOT Screensaver?

running 10.04 Netbook edition. I would like my screen to lock after the netbook goes to sleep but NOT after it enters the screensaver. is this possible? i use my laptop to read in the university a lot and to save power tell it to go into black screensaver after a minute of inactivity. if i enable the lock option i have to enter the password each and every time after the black screensaver activates. but if i deactivate this option and then put the netbook into sleep/hibernate mode it doesn't ask for a password (which i would like) is there any way configure separate passwords for these instances or are they firmly linked?

Ubuntu :: Disabled Lock Screen On Sleep Feature

Oct 25, 2010

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and in short, in my experience, it's terrible. All it did was bug my machine. When I enter the wrong credentials on login, it spins forever "checking" so I have to restart the computer. When I enter any credentials to unlock my computer after a lock screen (even if they are perfectly correct) it spins forever "checking." So I disabled the lock screen on sleep feature, which I hate having to do because I live on a college campus where anyone could pick up the computer and look at my notes without a password, but I have no alternative. Also the fingerprint scnaner on my lenovo worked perfectly before the upgrade and now it doesn't, it's apparent that it is very messed up, lighting up sometimes, and mostly not when it should. Additionally, I can't update my computer or download anything from the software center because it believes my root password to be incorrect. no matter what. This is the most frustrating thing I have ever encountered in day to day ubuntu use and I might just switch OS's because this is just counterproductive and a waste of time.

Ubuntu Networking :: Stops Working In 10.10 And Firefox Randomly Stops Working?

Nov 13, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64-bit on my desktop with a wired internet connection (with no firewall). For the past 2 days, I have observed that1. Firefox randomly throws up errors like "Problem loading page" whenever I click on a hyperlink. When I click on Reload, the page loads up just fine. This has been happening a lot recently..and I do not remember updating anything consciously. By the way, ipv6 is disabled in Firefox.2. The network stops working all of a sudden (usually indicated by the Firefox error). The Autho Eth0 indication is active, but I am unable to connect to any external machine.

3. Needless to say, this error is manifesting itself in apt-get as well. I get "something wicked happened" errors all the time, and am unable to download or install anything. That this is not a problem with the ISP is obvious because I also have Windows (from which I'm typing this, ironically), which is able to access the internet. Is this a bug in Ubuntu 10.10?

Ubuntu Networking :: Dual Ethernet Networking - Lose Internet Connectivity?

Apr 18, 2011

I have a server with two ethernet ports. I configured eth0 to be static, set at 10.1.10.148. I plugged in another router into the other ethernet port in order to configure that router. I configured eth1 to use dhcp. Using /etc/network/interfaces rather than gnome network manager. When I did this, I lost internet connectivity (internet routes through eth0 of course)

- Why did I lose internet connectivity?

In order to recover internet activity, I had to disconnect the new router on eth1 of course, and do sudo ifdown eth1. That wasn't enough however. After rebooting numerous times and pulling out my hair, I finally tried configuring eth0 as dhcp, rather than static, and this fixed the problem.

- Why didn't sudo ifdown eth1 solve the problem? What information was saved between reboots that somehow remembered that I plugged in the new router? Because my thinking was if /etc/network/interfaces was identical, and the network topology was identical, after a reboot everything should be restored, but it wasn't.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Tamed Resolvconf From Putting Stale/old Info In Resolv.conf

Feb 3, 2010

I have resolvconf installed to prevent multiple programs from fighting to update /etc/resolv.conf at the same time an corrupting it.From what I understand resolvconf a package found in the repos is suppose to act as the gatekeeper to /etc/resolv.conf and all programs must go thru it to update resolv.conf. Hence /etc/resolv.conf is written in a orderly manner.

from time to time though something goes awry and resolvconf writes old, wrong stale into /etc/resolv.conf, for a connection that may be down or no longer exists along with the correct info for the current connection.Usually i would fix this by uninstalling and reinstalling the resolvconf package.I was tired of this so i went digging around in

/etc/resolvconf and found the subdirectory
/etc/resolvconf/run/interface

This is where it looks like resolvconf caches interface info that goes into

/etc/resolv.conf

I think what happens is resolvconf is suppose to clean this up in an orderly way but sometimes old interface files may be left here.So for instance in mine were the files eth0 and wlan0.with dns info for each stored in the relative file. I no longer have an eth0 only a wlan0 so resolvconf was still pulling info from both

/etc/resolvconf/run/interface/wlan0 and /etc/resolvconf/run/interface/eth0

with the result of an incorrect dns info in /etc/resolv.conf To make a long story short I just deleted /etc/resolvconf/run/interface/eth0 and was good to go. So if you are using resolvconf and run into this problem you may use this work around.

FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

Debian Multimedia :: Screen Remains Black After Sleep Mode

Feb 20, 2011

I recently came to Debian. As I have an ati card, I tried the proprietary drivers first, but then came back to radeon (open-source). In the process, I think I may have broke my xorg.conf . Sometimes, when the monitor goes into sleep mode, when I came back, the screen remains black (sometimes I see just the cursor).

Here is my xorg.conf
# NOXORGCONFEXISTED: No X.org configuration file existed when this backup was created.

Also, I have lots of backups in my X11 folder, like xorg.conf.fglrx-3, xorg.conf.original-1, or backup.xorg.conf. Is it safe to remove them? What should I do about the main xorg.conf?

Ubuntu Networking :: Different Connectivity Under Different Kernels?

Apr 19, 2010

I use a laptop with a built-in WiFi card (Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] using iwl3945 module). It's OK but sometimes is not very stable, occasionaly it simply dies and I have to reboot. It was even worse but I improved it by applying a new driver.I also have a very nice USB WiFi card (D-Link System DWA-140 802.11n Adapter [ralink rt2870]). It's much better and faster.

So the problem is that in Ubuntu 9.10 (2.6.31) I can use only the built-in one. The other one (D-Link) also works but I can't make it connect to my router. The built-in card connects to it but the D-Link even does not list it among possible connections (but it lists other possible connections which I do not want to use). The funny bit is that this problem disappears when I use an old Kernel (2.6.28-18 ) : both cards work fine and can connect to the router at the same time (obtaining different ip's). I then disable the built-in one and happily use the external card.

Unfortunately the old Kernel has issues with sound and video, so I would like to use the latest Kernel with the external card. I tried WICD but it didn't change anything.I can add that under the old Kernel the USB card is used as a ra0 device while the new Kernel lists it as wlan1.

But as soon as I'm rescanning the network using the command (sudo iwlist wlan0 scan) everything is fine (constant 1-2ms ping). I'm using wicd as network manager. I have tried to schedule a job in crontab to launch every 10min a network scan command, but didn't succeed to have it working, morehover I don't think that's the good way.
