Ubuntu :: Black Screen After Login - About 30-40% Of The Time

Feb 24, 2011

Ubuntu 9.10, x64. Around 30-40%of the time, after i login, I just get a totally black screen. If i leave it for a few minutes, nothing seems to happen. Whether or not i get login seems fairly random, and I don't notice if there is any common factor- This is always from a clean boot, and i could be on power, or not on power. This is on a HP 6730b, so the video should be a Intel GMA 4500.

Ubuntu :: Change Default Runlevel 10.10 / Getting A Blank Screen At Login Time?

Dec 20, 2010

How do you change the default runlevel in Ubuntu 10.10? I need a solution that I can execute by editing text files; right now I'm accessing the Ubuntu filesystem by mounting it to another OS on a different hard drive.

The long and the short of it is that I'm getting a blank screen at login time. I suspect it's a driver issue (I have an Nvidia card) and it shouldn't be hard to fix... but I need a console. And no, I can't get in via Grub... my main OS is Slackware and Lilo is controlling the bootloader. So I need to be able to change the runlevel, and thus far a Google search has proved unenlightening.

Ubuntu Servers :: Hdparm Won't Put Drives To Sleep After Specific Time

I've just put together a 10.04 server using a GA-D525TUD atom board. I've installed gnome desktop too. I'm trying to get 4 sata drives to go into standby, but hdparm seems to be ignoring the settings. If i issue hdparm -y /dev/sdx the drive duly goes into standby and stays in standby until accessed. I've put entries in rc.local along with the hdparm.conf settings, but still no joy.

Ubuntu :: Login To Xfce The Screen Goes Black - Flickers A Few Times Then It Brings Back To The Login Screen

Apr 12, 2011

My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.

I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Ubuntu Installation :: Monitor Goes To Sleep Mid-login

Nov 12, 2010

My monitor falls to sleep when I get to the Grub Menu and choose "Ubuntu". It will get to the purple-ish loading screen to a minute before the monitor falls asleep. I am using 10.10, and this is my first experience with Linux. As much details as I can think of: I recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 after playing with it on a live CD. I chose to install it alongside Windows 7. The install was quick and smooth, and booted up as it should. When I get to the GRUB menu, I had more choices than I thought I would (I figured I could nix them later.)

These options were:
Ubuntu Linux
Ubuntu Linux (recovery mode)
Memory Check
different Memory Check
Windows 7

I chose windows 7, to make sure ol' semi-reliable, slow, and resource hogging OS worked. As expected, it ran through some stuff white-text-black-screen stuff to make sure all it's files were there (probably due to the fact I had to give some of my hard drive space to ubuntu). As far as I could tell, this did not modify any files, and it checked out with windows. I restarted using windows at this point....

Ubuntu :: Sleep Resume Making Login After Upgrade?

Jul 12, 2011

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 9.x to 10.04 LTS after the upgrade, my netbook goes to sleep in a short period of time and makes me login every time i resume. This is very annoying as i have to wait for login and sometimes my wifi connection drops. I just quickly want to check my messages. The delay is annoying and has me using a windows (argh) laptop instead. i miss my ubuntu netbook.

i have tried adjusting power management setting to never go to sleep and adjusted some other power management module from the command line, but with no luck. is there a way to reset the sleep pref's or any way to fix this.

Ubuntu :: Resolutions For Black Screen Of Sleep?

Aug 13, 2011

I generally suspend between work sessions. Occasionally, after a long time of running, my display goes black and is unresponsive. This seems to happen when I have fallen asleep while working. Now, I don't think someone has sneaked in and done something to my computer! Anyway, all the applications are still running (observed by bringing up the console, top/ps) but the X session does not respond. I have tried the Control-Alt-Backspace keystroke that is suggested for restarting X Window.

Over several times, I have experimented with killing specific processes from the console to see if I could restore life to the session, without having to shutdown. Today I noted that if I blast the compiz process it did come back. Of course, there may well be a specific combination of steps I did before that step that resulted in it working.

OpenSUSE Install :: Login Screen Keeps Bouncing Back To Login Screen

Sep 17, 2010

I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

/etc/fstab:
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/dis/by-id/ata-ST9250410ASG_5VG0B5VS-part6 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1

[code]....

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:

/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%

So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

Ubuntu :: Cant Login Into Hardy...Screen Hangs Up At Login Screen?

Dec 22, 2008

I have a desktop running Hardy and till friday it was running good. Today is monday and I guess it has got monday blues like I get every monday at work.Today I tried to start it as usual but it just refused to go further than login screen. I just can not login. It just hangs it there. I do not know what has gone wrong. I did not change anything since friday and no one else uses it. Theres nothing in logs that could give any idea. It just hangs without any reason and is still on the login screen for ever. It does ask my username and password but then it does not go further. But to my surprise I tried logging in with root and it gave me expected error that system administrator is not allowed to login from gnome.

Ubuntu :: Lock Screen After Sleep/Hibernate But NOT Screensaver?

Jul 29, 2010

running 10.04 Netbook edition. I would like my screen to lock after the netbook goes to sleep but NOT after it enters the screensaver. is this possible? i use my laptop to read in the university a lot and to save power tell it to go into black screensaver after a minute of inactivity. if i enable the lock option i have to enter the password each and every time after the black screensaver activates. but if i deactivate this option and then put the netbook into sleep/hibernate mode it doesn't ask for a password (which i would like) is there any way configure separate passwords for these instances or are they firmly linked?

Ubuntu :: Disabled Lock Screen On Sleep Feature

Oct 25, 2010

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and in short, in my experience, it's terrible. All it did was bug my machine. When I enter the wrong credentials on login, it spins forever "checking" so I have to restart the computer. When I enter any credentials to unlock my computer after a lock screen (even if they are perfectly correct) it spins forever "checking." So I disabled the lock screen on sleep feature, which I hate having to do because I live on a college campus where anyone could pick up the computer and look at my notes without a password, but I have no alternative. Also the fingerprint scnaner on my lenovo worked perfectly before the upgrade and now it doesn't, it's apparent that it is very messed up, lighting up sometimes, and mostly not when it should. Additionally, I can't update my computer or download anything from the software center because it believes my root password to be incorrect. no matter what. This is the most frustrating thing I have ever encountered in day to day ubuntu use and I might just switch OS's because this is just counterproductive and a waste of time.

Ubuntu :: Screen / Everything Freezes From Time To Time For No Reason In Natty?

May 4, 2011

Ever since I installed Ubuntu Natty, from time to time, for no particular reason, the entire computer screen freezes, and I am forced to hold the power button on my laptop to restart things with a hard reset. I cannot explain why it happens.

Such an issue never occurred in any of the past installations and versions of Ubuntu. This is a fresh installation of Natty by the way.

Also, I can currently be running a lot or nothing and it does this. Thus, it does not matter what I am actually doing (ie, what programs I might be running).

It has occurred about 10 times since I freshly installed Natty 6 days ago.

Debian Multimedia :: Screen Remains Black After Sleep Mode

Feb 20, 2011

I recently came to Debian. As I have an ati card, I tried the proprietary drivers first, but then came back to radeon (open-source). In the process, I think I may have broke my xorg.conf . Sometimes, when the monitor goes into sleep mode, when I came back, the screen remains black (sometimes I see just the cursor).

Here is my xorg.conf
# NOXORGCONFEXISTED: No X.org configuration file existed when this backup was created.

Also, I have lots of backups in my X11 folder, like xorg.conf.fglrx-3, xorg.conf.original-1, or backup.xorg.conf. Is it safe to remove them? What should I do about the main xorg.conf?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Login / After Couple Seconds Returned To The Login Splash Screen?

Oct 10, 2010

I recently powered up my netbook... Selected my user log in, entered my password, and after a couple seconds I briefly see what looks to be the console and am returned to the login splash screen... I can Ctrl+Alt+F2 to get to the console and log in... but that is as far as I can get. This is the case for Gnome, Remix, and Remix 2D.

I can sudo apt-get (update, upgrade, etc) as well. It is the right password because if I type in a wrong one it presents an authentication failure dialog box.

How can I fix my log in screen and get to my desktop? I am Currently running 10.04.... waiting to get 10.10
