Ubuntu :: Password Required After Screensaver?
Mar 25, 2011
I upgraded from 9.1 to 10.04 and now if I leave the machine for 5 mins the screen darkens and I am sked for a password. I already use my password to log on on and this nre request is becoming a dammed nuisance. Can someone tell me how to stop it from happening. I can't even go for a leak without having to reenter my password.

I don't require any password at boot but to resume after the screen saver I have to log in. The prompt references dabuntu. I have tried the normal settings with no luck.

I changed my password in the last few days using passwd. I still haven't gotten used to typing the new one, and entered the old one by accident to unlock the screen saver. I've been able to do this a bunch of times, and I'm quite sure it will still take the old password.This seems to be a serious security issue, and I'm not sure where I should raise this. I hope this is the right forum.I am using Ubuntu 10.04.$ uname -aLinux thunder 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:26:08 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux$ gnome-screensaver --versiongnome-screensaver 2.30.0

I have an Ubuntu 10.10 box authenticating Users against an LDAP server. User authentication works fine - ssh, console or Gnome.
The only place it has an issue is when the gnome-screensaver is activated and locks the computer. When I try to enter the correct password at this point I get these error in the logs;
Dec 20 14:42:23 box-ubuntu unix_chkpwd[12240]: password check failed for user (myname)
Dec 20 14:42:23 box-ubuntu gnome-screensaver-dialog: pam_unix(gnome-screensaver:auth): authentication failure; logname= uid=10038 euid=10038 tty=:0.0 r

In order to save power,I want to leave the default(blank) screensaver active,in case I forget to close my monitor when the computer is running.However,the screensaver is,by default,password protected and I would like to disable this annoying feature(which is,anyway,useless for me).If I go to System>Preferences>Screensaver and uncheck "Lock screen when scrensaver is active",will this remove password protection from the screensaver?

Slackware64, 13.1, Xfce: Sreensaver is configured to Lock Screen After 5 minutes. This works fine. My problem is that 90% of the time, when I go to wake the screensaver, it won't ask for a password and won't come out of screensaver. The only reliable method I have for getting the password prompt is to switch to a console and then switch back to the X session. Then, the screen saver doesn't display, it just asks for a password.
If I move the mouse when the screensaver is active, the screensaver animation freezes for ~20s and then resumes. If I touch a key (Esc, Shift, space, Enter), the animation freezes for ~30s and then resumes. I never see the Enter Password dialog. Screensaver is configured for Random. I haven't reliably gotten it to work often enough to offer any info as to when it works, but it has worked a couple of times. Keyboard and mouse are configured properly (HAL reports "Logitech Logitech USB Keyboard" for my Logitech Elite keyboard and X uses xkbrules evdev; the mouse is an MX Laser, identified as "Macintosh mouse button emulation").

presently my laptop requires a password when the screensaver has been activated(equivalent to the lock screen function). However, when I move the mouse to activate the password prompt, the screensaver freezes (all movement stops) and the password prompt is not visible. It's definitely there - if I type my password, then it brings me back to my desktop. However, if I mistype the password, or accidentally hit the mouse button so that somewhere other than the invisible password field is brought to focus, then entering the password becomes impossible, and I have to do a hard restart (ugh). I'm running an HP Pavilion dv5 laptop, with Ubuntu 9.10.

I'm using: ubuntu 10.04 64 bit proprietary fglrx drivers for ati 4890.
When shaking the mouse to bring up the computer, the screensaver will freeze and not display the dialog box to log back into my profile. However, even though I can't see it, if I blindly and correctly type in my password it will work.
[update] I posted this question while at work where I do not use Ubuntu...sadly. Anyway, when I got home, I locked the screen, the gl fish screensaver came up. bam, no login dialog box. ok, tried the gl matrix screensaver, bam, no dialog box. Finally, I tried a non-gl screensaver, and what do you know, there's my login dialog box. Something is up with the gl screensavers.
Just to reiterate, when I activate the mouse or keyboard during a gl screensaver I do not see the login dialog box.

Running Lucid. Every time I hibernate, when I come back, it requires entering a password. I would like to disable this.In the config editor, under apps -> gnome-power-manager -> lock, I've already unchecked _everything_ there, and it still asks me for a password after hiberate.

How do I disable the screensaver password prompt when I've already turned it off in System > Preferences > Screensaver? I tried checking and unchecking the box again and I also tried rebooting.
Another strange phenomenon is that after I enter my password, I'm now disconnected from the wireless network. Any thoughts?
I'm using 10.04 lucid lynx.

I'm running Thunderbird with Enigmail, and I have this very annoying problem. When I open an encrypted email for the first time, it asks me for my key password. It then remembers my password. This is fine for a few minutes, since I don't want to enter the password every time if I look at seven emails in five minutes. However, I WOULD like it to EVENTUALLY forget. At the moment, it doesn't even forget if I shut off Thunderbird. I have to restart my computer, in fact.
The preferences for Enigmail don't help. I've configured it to remember the password for 0 minutes, for example. I don't know how to edit the preferences for gpg-agent or anything else like that.

I am trying to set up a SSH key between servers so no password is required when I have to "scp" files between the two. This is what I have tried so far but still requires a password:
Code:
ssh-keygen -t rsa
scp /home/<user>/.ssh/id_rsa <server2.com>:/home/<user>/.ssh/athorized_keys
When I scp after this I wasn't expecting to need a password but it is still prompting. Now I have used this same method before and it has worked great. The only difference this time is server2 is not in the same cage.

I'm new to linux and that forum, so a (possibly) silly question: I installed couchdb 1.0.1 w/ ymp (one-click) from http://software.opensuse.org/search?...3A11.2&lang=de and when I try to start it like /etc/init.d/couchdb start or sudo -i -u couchdb couchdb I am asked for a pwd, which I never put in. tried several standards or my own already. Didn't find anything in any documentation. Am I doing something wrong here?

I have written a script to run commands on remote servers, it is working fine. But when I am running "sudo commands" on the remote servers, it asks for me password after prompting for ssh password. I am unable to automate this password prompt (which is just after ssh password prompt). This is the function I am using to provide passwords
Code:
pass ()
{
cd $DIR/"$dt1"_"$dt"
/usr/bin/perl << 'EOF'
use strict;
[code]....
I want the same function to be used , when it expects for sudo passwords for any of the below lines:
Code:
[sudo] password for vikas: orPassword: This is my "cmd" file passed in pass () function.
Code:
ssh -t -o UserKnownHostsFile=/dev/null -o StrictHostKeyChecking=no 192.168.1.100 "bash rcmds"
This is my script output
Quote:
[vikas@box1 ~]$ ./rscript.sh
++ rm -rf /home/vikas/May_31
++ mkdir -p /home/vikas/May_31
++ set +x
[code]....
how to automate the password prompt required for sudo commands.

There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..

I have recently upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04, and I have the following problem.My computer is set up to start the screensaver and lock the screen after 5 minutes of inactivity and to use a blank screen after 15. Whenever I come back after some moments of inactivity and move the mouse, the screensaver doesn't go away. Instead of having a box whereinput a password, I'm left with a still image of one frame of the screensaver. I can still input the password and press enter to unlock the screen, but it is a bit annoying nevertheless. Moreover this does not happen if the screen is blank: in that case I see the expected box.

I have Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit. Kernel: 2.6.38-8-generic AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 250u Processor 750GB HD 8GB RAM. Now, the problem is that when I lock my computer(I have to do this because I have brothers and stuff always trying to sneak on), it freezes after a while. Like, I lock my computer before I go to sleep, and I wake up and it's frozen, and I have to reboot to fix it. The problem is that I host 2 servers on it, and I can't turn it off.

I'm trying to get the f-spot screensaver working under KDE. I found the f-spot-screensaver executable in usr/lib/gnome-screensaver/gnome-screensaver/f-spot-screensaver, and the executable works just fine under KDE when run from the command line. I also found a .desktop file in /usr/share/applications/screensavers/f-spot-screensaver.desktop.
I also installed xscreensavers, and they all seem to work just fine, but I can't figure out how to make the f-spot version show up in control panel.
