Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Starts And Stops And Starts And Stops?

Feb 10, 2010

Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection. It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

Ubuntu :: Starts Up In Terminal - No GUI?

Feb 8, 2011

The problem is that Ubuntu will only boot into a terminal, asking for my username and password. Googling this problem seems to indicate that it may be a problem with graphics drivers.I've tried commands such as "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" and "startx" which I found through googling the problem, but neither of these did any good. I also tried reinstalling Ubuntu, but the problem didn't go away.I can still boot into Windows so it's not the end of the world, but I'd like to get Ubuntu working.

Ubuntu :: Thunderbird No Longer Starts

May 25, 2010

I have been running thunderbird.2.0.0.24+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 successfully for some time now under Hardy. This morning I tried to run it and I get the "wait" indication but then nothing. I looked in my home folder and the folder .mozilla-thunderbird seems to be liked to .thunderbird, but both are listed in red and black. (Doesn't sound good.) I saw a similar bug for a newer version of thunderbird, but the symptoms in my case seem different.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Desktop Starts After Everything Else?

May 26, 2010

I love Ubuntu but since upgrading to 10.04 have 2 probs. The first, which I have posted in another thread, is the splash screen. The second is this: with compiz, startup occurs in this order:

1. Gnome do dock and pointer appear on black background with no panels or desktop
2. Some hard drive activity
3. 10 secs no hard drive activity still no desktop
4. Gnome Desktop and panels finally appear with wireless already connected

It seems to me that the Gnome/compiz desktop is loaded only after everything else, including wireless and all services/processes. Compiz works fine, I am not short of ram or resources (2 Gb + Core 2 duo@2.7ghz). My question is then, is there a way to change the order of startup so that the desktop/compiz appears more quickly?

Ubuntu :: X11 Starts Up Before Network Is Active?

Jun 12, 2010

I'm building a HTPC using the minimal ubuntu variant.I've come pretty far, having X11 with Graphic support and Boxee running. The system boots extremely fast (no tweaking everything is default). So fast boxee is up and running before there is networking. The fast boot time is great. But I'd rather have a network connection before boxee is started.I could write a bash script that checks if there is a connection and then launch boxee accordingly.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 - Audacious Starts Instead For Nautilus

Whenever I try to click any of the places under the "Places"-menu in the panel under Gnome audacious gets started instead. How strange! Only way to stop it is to uninstall audacious. This seems very strange, it started today and I have no idea of why it started. Ubuntu 10.04. Do you need any more information? I am pretty new to the Gnome environment, I have always been running Fluxbox before.

Ubuntu :: Kubuntu 10.04 Starts Up With GNOME?

Aug 7, 2010

I have just started up Kubuntu, and it shows the Ubuntu desktop instead of Plasma. Before this, the only change I did was remove my Broadcom WiFi card because Kubuntu sometimes couldn't boot because of some error mentioning the bcm driver and phy5.

I removed the card, and no errors on boot. Now, I can't get on the internet because Kubuntu can't connect to anything. I see all of the networks, but I guess GNOME is interfering with Network Manager...

Ubuntu :: Computer Starts Then Shuts Down All By Itself?

Oct 3, 2010

After using Ubuntu 10.4 for months, my computer has started turning itself on without my pressing the on button. Sometimes it gets halfway through the boot process and shuts itself down. Sometimes it gets all the way to the desktop and a window pops up saying shutdown in 60 seconds however it never waits but shuts down immediately. Probably the second time this happened, I had time enough to get to the Power Manager and made sure it was set to 'never' power down. Currently the on/off cycling is happening so quickly I can't check the BIOS or grup. My only control is the master power switch on the back

Ubuntu :: Firefox Always Starts Maximized?

May 20, 2011

I don't know if it's a bug or a "feature", but every time I start Firefox in Unity it opens in maximized mode. As for many people this is what they like it may be convenient for them, but for the more drag & drop people like me that like to have several open windows on one screen it is rather annoying. It means I must normalize the window every time I start the browser. Is there a way to stop this behavior?

Ubuntu :: USB Copying Starts Slow And Gets Slower?

Feb 3, 2010

I know there were threads on USB problems already, but there does not yet appear to be a definitive solution to USB speed problems on Karmic.flash drives are very slow to copy to. running lsusb in terminal, it appears to be running at USB 1.1 speeds, but even that doesn't seem to be the whole picture. When I copy an 800mb file to the drive the first 150mb transfer in a matter of seconds, then the mb/s seems to get slower and slower, starting at about 12 and ending at about 5. If I copy multiple files to the USB at the same time the problem seems to get even worse, taking about 10 minutes to copy 1600 m/b - less than 1 mb/second.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Starts On Boot - How To Stop This

Mar 17, 2010

Just over the past few days Firefox 3.5.8 now starts as soon as the desktop has loaded - it's not set to do this in 'Startup Applications' - how do I stop it starting on boot? Also, over the same period, if I click a javascript link, nothing happens, it no longer opens the relevant page or image; so I click it again and still nothing, however several minutes later the page/image may open, but not always. Also if I close Firefox, then later click a link in an email it no longer opens Firefox - I then have to go into 'System Monitor > Processes', find and then 'end process' for Firefox (cause it's sleeping) before I can actually start it.I've gone in Synaptic and 'reinstalled' Firefox, but it made no difference. I cleared the cache and all cookies as well - could something have got into Firefox, and if so how can I fix it ?

I'm using karmic 9.10 32 bit with kernel 2.6.31-20-generic-pae update - it appears it's a javascript problem within Firefox as I can no longer open the popup window for online banking from my banks webpage link - I can do this in other browsers such as Epiphany, Google Chrome and Opera, but not in Firefox

I can now start the computer and get a remote desktop but nothing on the computer's display. I've tried to edit the xorg.conf but X has not created one. I'm at a loss of what to try next.
