Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection. It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

View 9 Replies View RelatedThe problem is that Ubuntu will only boot into a terminal, asking for my username and password. Googling this problem seems to indicate that it may be a problem with graphics drivers.I've tried commands such as "sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg" and "startx" which I found through googling the problem, but neither of these did any good. I also tried reinstalling Ubuntu, but the problem didn't go away.I can still boot into Windows so it's not the end of the world, but I'd like to get Ubuntu working.

A second system W7 AMD quad 4, nvidia Gt, the 4.6 alpha runs perfect with the same live cd. This is bad news, the update, upgrade path of Windows 7 and Apple Mac systems. And now Linux? I have been running thunderbird.2.0.0.24+build1+nobinonly-0ubuntu0.8.04.1 successfully for some time now under Hardy. This morning I tried to run it and I get the "wait" indication but then nothing. I looked in my home folder and the folder .mozilla-thunderbird seems to be liked to .thunderbird, but both are listed in red and black. (Doesn't sound good.) I saw a similar bug for a newer version of thunderbird, but the symptoms in my case seem different.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI love Ubuntu but since upgrading to 10.04 have 2 probs. The first, which I have posted in another thread, is the splash screen. The second is this: with compiz, startup occurs in this order:
1. Gnome do dock and pointer appear on black background with no panels or desktop
2. Some hard drive activity
3. 10 secs no hard drive activity still no desktop
4. Gnome Desktop and panels finally appear with wireless already connected
It seems to me that the Gnome/compiz desktop is loaded only after everything else, including wireless and all services/processes. Compiz works fine, I am not short of ram or resources (2 Gb + Core 2 duo@2.7ghz). My question is then, is there a way to change the order of startup so that the desktop/compiz appears more quickly?
I'm building a HTPC using the minimal ubuntu variant.I've come pretty far, having X11 with Graphic support and Boxee running. The system boots extremely fast (no tweaking everything is default). So fast boxee is up and running before there is networking. The fast boot time is great. But I'd rather have a network connection before boxee is started.I could write a bash script that checks if there is a connection and then launch boxee accordingly.

Only way to stop it is to uninstall audacious. This seems very strange, it started today and I have no idea of why it started. Ubuntu 10.04. Do you need any more information? I am pretty new to the Gnome environment, I have always been running Fluxbox before.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have just started up Kubuntu, and it shows the Ubuntu desktop instead of Plasma. Before this, the only change I did was remove my Broadcom WiFi card because Kubuntu sometimes couldn't boot because of some error mentioning the bcm driver and phy5.
I removed the card, and no errors on boot. Now, I can't get on the internet because Kubuntu can't connect to anything. I see all of the networks, but I guess GNOME is interfering with Network Manager...
I can't find a way to use cheese in lucid. When I start it, it immediately starts flashing photos in countdown mode and repeats. I can't find a way to stop it except to use the hardware Fn-Esc to disable the webcam.
Because of the intermittent flashing and countdown 3-2-1 screens, I can't hit any buttons or menus.
When Firefox starts, it loads the home page (Google), but then it greys out and ceases operating - even the 'Well , this is embarrassing' page when it restarts after a forced close greys out. I've used Synaptic to re-install Firefox, but it makes no difference. At the moment I can't use Firefox as my main browser (which has all my mostrecentbookmarks/passwords etc in it), I'm using Google Chrome to post this.

View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter using Ubuntu 10.4 for months, my computer has started turning itself on without my pressing the on button. Sometimes it gets halfway through the boot process and shuts itself down. Sometimes it gets all the way to the desktop and a window pops up saying shutdown in 60 seconds however it never waits but shuts down immediately. Probably the second time this happened, I had time enough to get to the Power Manager and made sure it was set to 'never' power down. Currently the on/off cycling is happening so quickly I can't check the BIOS or grup. My only control is the master power switch on the back

View 3 Replies View RelatedI don't know if it's a bug or a "feature", but every time I start Firefox in Unity it opens in maximized mode. As for many people this is what they like it may be convenient for them, but for the more drag & drop people like me that like to have several open windows on one screen it is rather annoying. It means I must normalize the window every time I start the browser. Is there a way to stop this behavior?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI know there were threads on USB problems already, but there does not yet appear to be a definitive solution to USB speed problems on Karmic.flash drives are very slow to copy to. running lsusb in terminal, it appears to be running at USB 1.1 speeds, but even that doesn't seem to be the whole picture. When I copy an 800mb file to the drive the first 150mb transfer in a matter of seconds, then the mb/s seems to get slower and slower, starting at about 12 and ending at about 5. If I copy multiple files to the USB at the same time the problem seems to get even worse, taking about 10 minutes to copy 1600 m/b - less than 1 mb/second.

I recently installed Ubuntu on my Powerbook G4 1.6ghz 13". The install went fine along with the first boot off the harddrive. The problem came when I started the computer for the second time. X starts but the display comes up blank. To be sure I didn't mess up the install I reinstalled Ubuntu and installed all the updates and proprietary drivers as well as setup remote desktop options. I can now start the computer and get a remote desktop but nothing on the computer's display. I've tried to edit the xorg.conf but X has not created one. I'm at a loss of what to try next.
