Jan 9, 2010rhythmbox isnt one of my startup programs, but for some reason it starts up every time i boot my computer. i even downloaded bootup manager and its not on that list either...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox Starts Then Closes Immediately?
Sep 21, 2010I have this issue with Rhythmbox where if I tried to open it trhough Applications > Sound & Video, the program would start and close almost immediately.
I ran it in CLI & got:

Dec 23, 2010Whenever I mount any of the ntfs volumes, instead of opening the volume, Rhythmbox starts automatically and scans volume for media files. It has nothing to do with media files as it starts even when there is no media file in the volume.

Aug 26, 2010I can't find a way to use cheese in lucid. When I start it, it immediately starts flashing photos in countdown mode and repeats. I can't find a way to stop it except to use the hardware Fn-Esc to disable the webcam.
Because of the intermittent flashing and countdown 3-2-1 screens, I can't hit any buttons or menus.

Ubuntu :: Sshd Starts Manually But Not At Startup?
Dec 27, 2010Not sure if this belongs here or in the upgrade forum but since the upgrade went OK I figured I would post this here. I come from a RedHat background and am not too familiar with the Ubuntu/Debian way of dealing with service startup so this may be simple. I was running 10.04 LTS on a Sony Vaio and did a distribution upgrade to 10.10. When running 10.04 LTS the sshd daemon started on boot and I was able to ssh into the PC. Now that did the update I can start the daemon using the command "sudo /etc/init.d/ssh start" but it doesn't start when the systems boots.
I even tried creating the entries in the /etc/rc.#.d directories like this:
/etc/rc0.d/K20ssh -> ../init.d/ssh
/etc/rc1.d/K20ssh -> ../init.d/ssh

Jul 16, 2010I am having some trouble with RhythmBoxt runs fine until I install the package (Synaptics) Rhythmbox plugins 0.12.8-0. After I install this package and then open RhythmBox, the applications opens for a few seconds and then closes (terminates). I get a segmentation fault.I tried reinstalling but this does not help. From previous posts, others were also obtaining segmentation faults, others had success with uninstalling the rhythmbox-ubuntuone-music-store package. I do not have this installed on my system. My problem is related with the plugins package.If I run rhythmbox from the command line in sudo mode it starts without crashing but with a warning:Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name But when I select one of the plugin sources it then terminates and closes down

Apr 22, 2010trying to get Firefox working properly. I have the tarball installed from Firefox�s site and am using Fedora 12 with KDE as the desktop environment. The problem is if I start Firefox normally, say, by just clicking on the firefox script, then the graphics will be rather crude; but when Firefox starts as soon as I log in (because I�ve configured it to auto-start) then the graphics will be nice and smooth. I�m having a hard time trying to find answers for this because I�m not exactly sure what�s happening? I think when it auto-starts as I log in, it�ll use... well, this is the bit I haven�t got a clue how to explain? I�d guess one time it uses QT, and the other time it�ll use GTK.
I don�t know why it�s doing this, and when it�s started normally and I go to shutdown most of the time it�ll come up with a crash report. There isn�t any difference in the way Firefox is being opened, the auto-start calls upon the same script that my shortcut uses, which is the same as clicking on the firefox script in the firefox folder. I have a few images attached to elucidate the problem. I understand I may not have made myself very clear, but I�m having a great deal of trouble understanding what precisely is going on.
Firefox can seem a bit glitchy when the crude graphics are in use. Like the mouse-overs which leave traces of the box behind when you move the mouse away. So I�m having to logout then back in if I�ve happened to close Firefox and want to reopen it...
Software :: Rhythmbox Not Loading Library On Startup?
May 20, 2011When I startup Rhythmbox music player I have no library. Whats strange is when I click edit/preferences/music and then browse to select my library location (which is already correct), apon selecting the hard drive that my library is on the whole music library suddenly loads and I don't have to re-select my library folder, I just cancel the preferences window. But if I just wait for Rhythmbox to load the library without beginning to remind it where it is, it never loads.

Apr 29, 2011I'm using the rhythmbox installation that ships with fedora for my music playback. Every time is start the darn thing up though I can hear my external disk (media library) being accessed really hard. I assume this is part of some sort of library self check and probably a check for new music(?). So this got me wondering on how rhythmbox keeps up with my media library and if there is a way to make it more! I assume that atm rhythmbox just checks every file it now in my library for 'something' and at that also checks for new files and folders in the library directory. So I guess It would be quite a boost in startup performance (disk thrashing) to just skip the existing files checks. Right? Well, I obviously don't know how rhythmbox ticks so be nice.

udevd[746] nss_ldap reconnecting to LDAP server (sleeping 4 seconds)
udevd[746] failed to bind to LDAP ser er ldap://192.168.0.100 cant contact ldap
It fails and then tries again, and again, each time increasing the sleep time. This is happening before network sercvices are started so ther is no way it can connect to ldap. anyone know a way to fix this problem?

Aug 8, 2010we were watching Clint Eastwood in Pink Cadillac on DVD. Earlier, I had been checking out the streaming internet radio on my roommates Mint laptop using Rhythmbox, and found it to be pretty cool. Usually, if I stream any music, it's just from the CBC (like the U.S.'s NPR), so I just stream it directly from them, but all the stations on rhythmbox (there's a whack of them) got me interested. At the start of Pink Cadillac, I proposed myself a challenge: Could I manage to get rhythmbox (a GNOME application) to work on my Slack64 -current box, before the movie ended? There's probably (maybe?) a similar app that installs and works more natively on Slack, but that's not the point; I wanted to try installing rhythmbox in < 2 hrs. Well, I got it installed finally, *just* at the end of the movie credits, but it won't play! And sometimes it segfaults. So, I wonder if anyone has any tips about what I might be missing or whatever.
Here's what I typically get when I first start it up (though it starts & runs OK):

Seems even on systems with some sort of 'natural' support for installing this thing, a lot of people are getting the same or very similar errors, but I haven't found a solution (obviously - I wouldn't be posting otherwise ) but people, myself included, have discovered that there doesn't seem to be a 100% accurate list of *required* dependencies for rhythmbox; it needs stuff that it doesn't tell you it needs.
EDIT: Disclaimer (just to cut the 'dependency-hell' arguments off at the pass, so to speak): This is just a fun experiment for me. I don't suggest Slackware newbies start trying to install <xyz Gnome application> into their Slackware boxes unless you want to spend HOURS fixing stuff like this, and you want to have fun doing it, and have it maybe bork your box up. And if you *do* decide to try it anyways, don't blame Slackware for giving you dependency hell. Gnome doesn't come with Slackware (here's the ChangeLog). I like Slackware exactly the way it is - it comes with more than enough apps to satisfy most people, all nicely working out of the box, so installing stuff like this is not really necessary - but I'm choosing to do this one anyway, and am not deterred by this "mess" of stuff.If this dependency stuff isn't your 'cup of tea', an 'automatically-dependency-resolving' distro might be better for you; I prefer to mess my machine up on my own, rather than let my package manager do it for me.

Feb 10, 2010Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection.It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

This morning I tried to run it and I get the "wait" indication but then nothing. I looked in my home folder and the folder .mozilla-thunderbird seems to be liked to .thunderbird, but both are listed in red and black. (Doesn't sound good.) I saw a similar bug for a newer version of thunderbird, but the symptoms in my case seem different.

May 26, 2010I love Ubuntu but since upgrading to 10.04 have 2 probs. The first, which I have posted in another thread, is the splash screen. The second is this: with compiz, startup occurs in this order:
1. Gnome do dock and pointer appear on black background with no panels or desktop
2. Some hard drive activity
3. 10 secs no hard drive activity still no desktop
4. Gnome Desktop and panels finally appear with wireless already connected
It seems to me that the Gnome/compiz desktop is loaded only after everything else, including wireless and all services/processes. Compiz works fine, I am not short of ram or resources (2 Gb + Core 2 duo@2.7ghz). My question is then, is there a way to change the order of startup so that the desktop/compiz appears more quickly?

Jun 12, 2010I'm building a HTPC using the minimal ubuntu variant.I've come pretty far, having X11 with Graphic support and Boxee running.The system boots extremely fast (no tweaking everything is default). So fast boxee is up and running before there is networking. The fast boot time is great. But I'd rather have a network connection before boxee is started.I could write a bash script that checks if there is a connection and then launch boxee accordingly.

Jul 27, 2010Whenever I try to click any of the places under the "Places"-menu in the panel under Gnome audacious gets started instead. How strange! Only way to stop it is to uninstall audacious. Aug 7, 2010I have just started up Kubuntu, and it shows the Ubuntu desktop instead of Plasma. Before this, the only change I did was remove my Broadcom WiFi card because Kubuntu sometimes couldn't boot because of some error mentioning the bcm driver and phy5.
I removed the card, and no errors on boot. Now, I can't get on the internet because Kubuntu can't connect to anything. I see all of the networks, but I guess GNOME is interfering with Network Manager...

I've used Synaptic to re-install Firefox, but it makes no difference.At the moment I can't use Firefox as my main browser (which has all my mostrecentbookmarks/passwords etc in it), I'm using Google Chrome to post this.
