Ubuntu :: Starts And Then Almost Immediately Trashes Itself?
Jan 4, 2011
When I launch the program it starts and then almost immediately trashes itself. I am not a power user so I don't know where to look to solve this problem. The account has been working since October so it's unlikely a provider problem.

I have this issue with Rhythmbox where if I tried to open it trhough Applications > Sound & Video, the program would start and close almost immediately.
I ran it in CLI & got:
Code:
rhythmbox
** (rhythmbox:3378): DEBUG: Loading the real store page
** (rhythmbox:3378): DEBUG: navigation requested to https://one.ubuntu.com/music/store-no-token
Segmentation fault
So what now, re-install through Synaptic?

I've installed 10.10 on my Asus 1015PE and when I went to look at the partition table I couldn't get Gparted to stay open. When I click on it, it opens the window, says that it is searching then scanning, then the window and program closes. The window is up for maybe 3 seconds tops.
I've got two other ubuntu netbook versions running on the same machine and gparted works fine on those installs. I've tried completely removing gparted and reinstalling, I've rebooted, I've tried calling it from the terminal, but always the same: it opens, starts to scan and closes.

I want to build a Ubuntu system onto a USB stick so that I can do private work after hours on a work laptop while travelling. With both 9.04 and then 9.10 installs, the install writes the GRUB to the desktop's HDD on which I am building the system. This has two effects,
1. The HDD won't boot, without the USB stick in the drive. This makes the reliability of the computer depend upon the stick and
2. The laptop will not boot from the stick because it is not a bootable drive.
Both the desktop and the laptop are XP Professional systems.
To get my desktop back the first time I had to replace the Main Boot Record. Changing from 9.04 to 9.10 did not make a difference. I now have to replace the MBR again.
What gives? I believed that installing Ubuntu is supposed to be easy and non-destructive.
I had formatted the 8GB USB stick with HP USB Format Tool with FAT32.
During the install, I chose the USB stick as the sole recipient of the system.
I like using Linux and have had a Mint6 build for years for just this purpose. However, as I want to now connect with a pre-paid NextG modem, I found it necessary to have a new system. By the way, the Sierra Wireless USB301 NextG modem connected easily when I was running the 9.10 Live CD on the desktop prior to building the USB system.

I'm having a major, recurring problem with OO 3.2.0 on Ubuntu 10.04.1, which I installed about a month ago.Because of some driver incompatibilities with my laptop (a ThinkPad X201), the OS occasionally freezes.Three times in a month, this has been followed by a failed OpenOffice document recovery that has resulted in the last "saved" version of the file being wiped out. When I say wiped out, I mean a file that showed as 35k before the freeze now shows as 0 bytes, or 1536 bytes, or some other very small number.
My guess is that this is caused because the OS is holding the data in cache for far too long, and thus the data are lost when the OS freezes. I am wondering specifically whether this has to do with the file system and/or the way I have it configured. My last Ubuntu system never had this problem: It was version 8.04, using ext3 in an encrypted lvm. The explicit fstab options for the main lvm were relatime,errors=remount-ro. (I understand that this also implies data=ordered.)My current system is version 10.04, using an ext2 boot partition and a main ext4 file system in an encrypted lvm. The explicit fstab options for the main partition are data=ordered,barrier=1,noatime,errors=remount-ro.

Sometime after I upgraded to ubuntu 9.10 I've been having trouble with my wireless network connection. It will usually log on to the network, then disconnect a shortly after. Then try to connect again, usually successfully, then it cuts off again. Then connects again, then disconnects. FWIW, ubuntu 9.10 works on a different machine pretty consistently, so I don't think its a problem with the router.

I have a new UEC (Ubuntu 9.10) server up and running. I'm running a self contained solution so the cluster and node are on the same machine. I know this isn't ideal but I only have one server. I followed https:[url]... and https:[url].... When I try to run a VM (Ubuntu 9.10 amd64) image it will go from pending to shut-down to terminated. I know others have had this problem but I haven't see any solutions. I'm hoping there might be one out there that I've missed. I'm running on an AMD 64-bit quad core with 8GB DDR3 RAM.I am not seeing any errors in the logs.

I have a dual boot setup with two hard drives. Windows 7 is running on my primary drive with Ubuntu 10.04 on the secondary drive. I installed GRUB 2 to the secondary hard drive, and I'm booting from that. Everything seems to be working well with one problem. Every time I shut down from Ubuntu and tell it to load Windows (it doesn't matter if it's a reboot or power off/on), Windows locks up during its boot. If I power the laptop off and back on, I can select and load into Windows just fine. It just takes two attempts EVERY time.

Under 8.04 lts moving a file to Trash under Gnome/Nautilus resulted in the file being moved to the Trash directory, from where I could then delete it. It was an extra layer of protection against mistakes.
Now when I right click on a file and choose move to Trash, it deletes immediately without the protection.
I see no way to turn it back on. Is this a change in the way Nautilus is meant to work, or is there a switch someplace to put it back?

On a fresh install of the Meerkat release candidate, I've installed the latest VirtualBox (3.2.8-64453, not open source version). When I run it, I get a user-agreement notice box as expected.
But, (1) sometimes immediately thereafter, or if not, then (2) as soon as I move the mouse pointer or (3) after I use the PageDown key to get to the bottom of the agreement text and use a key combination for "I agree," my Ubuntu user session crashes and I have to log in again.
The only other weird symptom I'm having is that I cannot set visual effects to anything but "None" (if I attempt to, I get an alert "The Composite extension is not available").
Perhaps there's a video-related problem underlying both issues, i.e., the X server is failing in both cases?

I really can't say what I did that may have triggered this problem. I've been trying to setup remote access through SSH but that's about it. Haven't changed any settings in a bit though. I downloaded Konsole and it closes immediately as well.

This occurred sometime in the past couple of days, perhaps because of an update that I just blindly accepted or due to some tinkering of my own. But for some reason, my gksudo never remembers the password I put in there anymore. When I sudo in a terminal it remembers no problem, and my sudo-via-terminal also responds to the "timestamp_timeout=x" variable in /etc/sudoers as it should. But does gksudo have it's own "/etc/sudoers" file where you can override the caching period for the password or does it reference the regular /etc/sudoers also?

I'm running an up-to-date Lucid Lynx but now getting irritated by a bug or problem (I'm not sure whether it's a bug) in Gnome-panels. The problem is whenever I add a new panel in Gnome Desktop, the new panel doesn't appears on screen and needs to be re-logon to appear. It seems a known issue when I checked for the same at Launchpad, but it existed in betas.
I found this trouble since I have made a clean install of Lucid but thought it'll be fixed in any of the updates, but it didn't solved even after the most recent update I made this morning. I wanted to report this bug but didn't knew how to file bug for gnome-panels as there's no option like 'Report a problem' for gnome panels.

I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (64-bit) server edition on a box here (a few times now), and each time I attempt to boot post-install, I get RAID errors. The box has 4 hard drives in it, and I've disabled the hardware RAID in BIOS because I couldn't seem to get that to work.During the installation, I opted to handle partitioning manually. One set of hard drives has two partitions: one for swap, and one for /. When all is said and done, I end up with three RAID 1 mirrors: one for swap (/dev/md0), one mounted at / (/dev/md1), and one mounted at /srv (/dev/md1).

I run into a new kind of problem with Ubuntu 10.4 LTS. The unlock screen dialog that asks for your password when resuming from the screensaver does not show up immediately. Moving the mouse, typing stuff. It does not seem to be a pure display problem, since typing the password does not seem to do the trick. After a while (about 15 seconds), it shows up, though.

When I try to open Banshee, I can see the GUI for about half a second, then it closes with "Unhandled Exception: GLib.GException: Can't recursively copy directory".I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 amd64, and had an old version of banshee installed from a few releases back (don't remember which). I deleted the banshee-1 folder in my ~/.config directly, as well as uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck. Other Mono apps (such as gnome-do) work fine. Here is the full output of "banshee --debug":

This is an extremely weird issue that I can't find any help with on Google. It is minor but extremely annoying.
When I type in a linux command in the terminal, (e.g. "ls -la"), and then press enter, the cursor goes to the next line and just sits there, as if its processing some long command.
If I press enter again, I see the ls output as well as my prompt twice. It's like the terminal window isn't auto-scrolling, but I've also seen this happen when there wasnt even enough text in the console screen to warrant a scrollbar. Has anyone seen this before and know what I need to do? I hope what I'm asking about makes sense.

I am looking for a way to permanently delete files immediately - no trash, no taking up space but a command to make a file immediately gone. I have a USB flash drive and it has a hidden .trash file on it that builds-up until I have no more room on the flash drive - all space taken up by deleted files. I need a command that bypasses the trash and immediately deletes a file for good making space available.

I'm Dual-booting XP with Ubuntu Karmic Koala, heres my other specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium D 3.0Ghz family(15) model(4) stepping(4)
GFX: Geforce 7800 GT (had problems with GFX when I first installed Ubuntu, I had to update my drivers)
2 GB RAM
This is a nearly fresh install of Karmic Koala, I've only installed whatever updates I needed, graphics card drivers, KPlayer, and Google Chrome. Because I prefer Chrome over Firefox I immediately went to download Chrome, and Firefox would get to the Chrome page and then crash. I then got the Chrome install file from another computer and installed it. Chrome will not even launch, so I go to search the problem in Firefox and it crashes on ANY link I click in Google Search. I also tried to directly type websites into the URL box: it loads the pages title (Ex. "Yahoo! Mail"), and crashes before displaying the page at all.
This is a very odd problem to me as I used the same disc to install dual-boot with Win7 and Ubuntu on my laptop which works perfectly, and now this happens to my desktop.

I've used Mint a couple times to try to recover my old computers, but I only worked with it as long as I needed to. Now, I'm going to give Ubuntu a try so I downloaded Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and burned it to a DVD. When I try to boot it up with the DVD in, it does the startup screen that I'm used to before it loads the actual OS, and then it just gives me a blank screen. The only way to exit is to shut down the computer
