I was working on a shell script to change the permissions of large directories and subdirectories because of an exploit discovered in the programs that run in those said directories that allow a client to upload and download files to the server. Loan behold I accidentally added a space and had something along the lines of "chmod -R 770 ." run on / logged in as root.
Yes, it was an incredibly noob move on my part, but nothing ventured nothing gained. I am surprisingly calm about this. I tried sliding in my CentOS installation disk and "Upgrading" CentOS but that only made it worse, beforehand I made everything owned by root so I could at least log into GNOME. This does not work for obvious reasons, namely having to change the permissions back for every user and every group, which far beyond a possibility.

I was working on my Ubuntu lab machine and unconsciously deleted the project files I was working on. I have been working on the project since last 10 days now. Is there a way to restore the files? I do not have sudo access. I was working in my home directory which is served by a common file system (serving all the lab machines).

the permissions for my home directory were accidentally changed from 'access files' to 'create and delete files', and I changed them back, but ever since then I am not able to change any preferences/settings at all. power management, themes, panels, emerald, anything. my user account is supposed to be the administrator, and all the user privliges are checked. how to get control of my computer back?

My friend's computer is giving him the blue screen of death (have to LOVE Vista), so I decided to help him. I am pretty sure that it's from a virus that corrupted Vista, but I could be wrong, it could be the hard drive that went corrupt. Being that it's a laptop, I am hoping it's just the OS.
Now, I have Ubuntu on a disc, and it runs very smoothly. (Didn't install it, just chose run on the disc.) However, I couldn't see the files on the computer. I was wondering if there is a way to get those files without installing Ubuntu, because I am planning on upgrading the computer to Windows 7, but using the Ubuntu disc was the only way I could actually get to the desktop.
So, I guess my question is: is there any way to get the files from the computer on the C drive without having to install Ubuntu

I recently moved into a new place and when I hooked up my webserver, I wasn't able to bring up my page, even from localhost. With some digging, it seems that I can't access the database that housed my posts (wordpress installation). I looked for the datadir in MySQL and that directory shows the wordpress directory that should be holding the database and all the files are still there. 1) why the database no longer shows up 2) how to restore the database from the files?

I understand you can't restore files from the trash but when I right click on the trash at the top it says "restore files", however clicking on it does nothing. So I tried copying the files in the trash (160 MP3 albums)over to another folder and the only thing that transfers is each album folder without the contents. When i try to move the contents I get an error: items in the trash may not be modified. I can't move each folder individually either, same result. I am not modifying anything I am only moving it.

I moved up to 10.4 which is working great. I backed up my files with Sbackup so now I'm trying to restore my Home folder but it appears that not all files are restored. I'm restoring from a "full" backup on an external drive. Dumb question: Do I need to restore all the directories (etc, home, usr, var) to get all my home folders/files restored? Or why don't all my Home foldersfiles show after restoring "Home"?
EditPerhaps I have an answer. It appears that I have to install individual folders/files. I assumed that if I selected the Home folder that all sub folder and files would be restored. Apparently not. I have restored individual sub-folders but not parent plus child directories.

I'm trying to restore all my files to my new ubuntu server (a netbook actually) and can't! after copying for a few moments the samba shares stop working. in synaptic it says samba 2:3.4.7 as im typing this i realized I was able to copy a few large files when i was starting out so there may be some software added since thats the issue. In my scenario i found that the server does recover after a minute or two. but when copying large files it causes ALL networking to stop. funny that if i go to the server screen it is fine. Ive experienced this connecting with a windows 7 pc and a mac. the server will start responding again in a couple of minutes. when it locks up it locks up ALL networking: cant connect to the webserver, or ssh either when this happens. Just starts working again after 2 minutes. I am unable to sync this with my backup drive unfortunately.
I did some experimenting today and found that I was able to stay connected via ssh for well over an hour with no problems. as soon as I start copying files is when it happens. I use this as a server in a home office so I need to resolve this. for now going to share a drive off my router i guess. have been poring through the logs and reading everything i can on this the last few days.. I switched from network manager to WICD after reading about it online somewhere. that actually did help to apparently reduce the frequency of the issue.
does anyone have any tips? this is a new machine/install of Ubuntu 10.4 LTS desktop version (its just easier than the server version for me even though using as a server). its a new MSI X Slim X320. I bought it as it has the X530 Atom processor which is super efficient and I run this as a solar powered web/file/torrent/app server. In that regard im very pleased with it.

I have 5 folders in the virtual rubbish bin that can not be seen and restored but is crucial for me to recover them.
I was trying too record 5 folders with brasero and I sttoped the process, then all of a sudden the folders dissapeared and after I found then in the reclycling bin by -> right click/properties in this "basic" windows there It's said: content: 413 elements ... 663.1 MiB in total ... also the picture of the bin appears full, and when I put the pick ontop of it it says: 5 elements in the bin...

How do I restore MySQL Databases from an old hdd with Ubuntu on it which won't boot? Information below is not necessary just explaining how I ended up in this situation. Today the harddrive crashed on one of my development servers and I have no recent backup of the MySQL databases on the server.
The stuff on the server weren't horrible important but it would still be nice if I were able to recover some of the files. This is the thing, I don't think the harddrive is entirely dead because it comes to a screen saying harddrive error something enter to continue then it says GRUB in the upper left corner before the computer crashes/reboots.
So I installed Ubuntu server on a new HDD and now I want to attempt to recover the databases from the old HDD by mounting it in Ubuntu but before trying I would like to know who one does that. As I've understood it's a bit more complicated then one might thing because MySQL uses binaries and not plain-files.

I used Deja dup to back up my Ubuntu eventually I reinstalled ubuntu and went to restore from the files that Deja Dup created but when it said it was done there was no change. I can go into the difftar.gz files and see my folders and files and even tried extracting them from there but when I open them all the information isn't there.
I haven't restored Ubuntu till now so I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or not but its REALLY important that I get some of these files. am I missing a step, or what?

Is any easy way to restore deleted files with Gnome Commander (v1.2.8.2)? I have external drive with two partitions: FAT32 and EXT4. I was using GC on Ubuntu 9.10 and it was working fine, today I installed openSUSE and GC is showing only EXT4 partition. Nautilus is showing both and it is working fine though.

I have limited experience in terminal, but let me first explain what I am trying to do to see if there is some easier way to do it. Basically I want to change the skin in aMSN. I downloaded the new skin but am unable to unzip or move it without /root permissions. I don't know how to acquire this without being in terminal. So I figured there had to be some way to go into the terminal and use it to move the unzipped folder from the desktop to the aMSN skins folder.

I installed F9 for a friend. She wasn't getting any sound. I ran aplay -l, but got no sound card listed. I ran lspci -v, but got no sound card listed. However, the output of lspci -v said the computer had a particular motherboard. I Googled for it and was told it had an onboard sound card. That led me to the package called realtek-linux-audiopack-4.06a, which I installed. It included an installation script, which I ran.
The script didn't work to compile various files it was supposed to, but it did work to delete various files from my friend's system. Here are the bits of the script that removed files:
echo "Remove old sound driver"
if [ -d /lib/modules/$KERNEL_VER/kernel/sound ]; then
rm -rf /lib/modules/$KERNEL_VER/kernel/sound/pci > /dev/null 2>&1
[code]....
In the result, the failure of the compilation didn't matter, because lspci -v lied. She didn't have the motherboard shown, but a different one without an onboard sound card. Of the files deleted by the script.
I was able to reinstall libasound.so.2 and libasound.so.2.0.0, but I haven't yet tried to reinstall the other ones deleted by the script. Now, I want her to buy a sound card, but I'm afraid it won't work unless all the deleted files are reinstalled. I'm looking for guidance as to how I can reinstall the files deleted by the bits of the script I set out above, without completely reinstalling Fedora.

I need to setup permissions for some files. The users on this Ubuntu system should be able to read/view the files. They cannot write/edit the files. Most importantly, they should NOT be able to copy the files anywhere. They should NOT be able to copy these files to another folder, USB device, etc.

I did a clean install of 10.04 over the weekend and copied all of my backed up files from my external drive back to my internal drive. However, I've noticed that when I moved all my files back, they're all now marked as being executable. I've since fixed this, but I was wondering why this happened to begin with?
I use rsync to backup my files (grsync to be exact), but when I do so I copy files from my internal drive, which is formatted as ext4, to my external drive, which is formatted as NTFS (I keep my external drive as NTFS in case I need to hook it up to a Windows machine). Does the file system discrepancy have to do with why my permissions change when I backup/restore my files? Is there a way to prevent this? Or should I be backing up my files a different way?

I made some files belong to root, so that my sister couldn't read them while she was staying with me, there were about 40 files altogether but I did them all at once by change the permissions of the folder and clicking "apply Permissions to enclosed files" but now I want to change them back to belonging to my user account so Opened a gksudo nautilus windows and I went on folder properties and set the permissions to [user] and clicked apply to enclosed files, but it only did the folder. I tried selecting all the files and changing them all at once that way but it won't let me, how can I make the files belong to me again, other then one by one? I dont know how to use the CLI that much.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 Meerkat and everytime I attempt to edit the permissions of a file either using the command line or gui it does not stick. When I use the gui and click in the permissions tab and then choose execute file the check mark appears and then immediately disappears.
When I attempt to change permissions via the command line and execute a script even if the script was created by me it does not work and when I check the permissions there is no changes from the original before my attempt to add execute permissions.
Even when I change permissions for read and write they don't stick.
I had no problem when I was using 10.04 and need to get this fixed.
PS. I made sure I am changing permissions using root privileges.
