Ubuntu :: Rename The "Applications" "Places" And "System" Menus
Jul 9, 2010
I am trying to find a way to rename the "Applications" "Places" and "System" menus to something shorter (Apps, GoTo, Sys). I came across this: [URL] But it didn't work: all it did was to make my Notification Area disappear.

I have 11.04 installed, Gnome 2.32.0 - life has been good until I responded as normal to the update manager this morning. Upon reboot noticed my main menu, system menu and places menu are gone. Other icons and stuff like power button remain on the top toolbar but again, no menus.Googling around I found solutions that were years old and/or did not work for me (like installing XFCE - which did nothing).

Whether it is just made unconfigurable or difficult to configure I don't like it. Can't move the panel from top to bottom, Firefox did not have pull down menus for bookmarks etc. Where the did the Application ,Places and System panel menus go? In 10.10 and before I could right click on the desk top and add to the panel but, 11.04 does not even respond to right click. If this is a bug that has a fix please help but if this is normal for 11.04.please let me know how I can make 10.10 the default partition to boot.

In trying to fix issues I have been having with my display, I seem to have inadvertently removed all applications from my menu, which is rather annoying. I'm not sure how. I've attached a couple of screenshots to display this.
When trying to access the 'Main Menu' option from the Gnome Control Center, I get the following error in the command line:
Code:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/alacarte", line 36, in <module>
main()
File "/usr/bin/alacarte", line 32, in main
app = MainWindow(datadir, version, sys.argv)
[Code].....

I recent installed ubuntu 10.04. Sometimes it is getting stuck during normal operations and when that happens I am not able to type anything. The terminal is opening but I cant type any command in it. Nothing happens when I click on the options in the panel i.e 'Applications', 'Places', 'System' . When I try to restart the computer the shutdown option isn't appearing.

All of a sudden all my drop-down menus in the upper left dissapeared (things like system, applications, bookmarks, etc.) though buttons/shortcuts and clock, etc. are still there though oddly spaced out.

Is it possible to edit the "Places" menu the way one can edit the "Applications" and "System" menus on gnome?
Right-clicking on the bar gives only Applications and System as editable menus. I would like to remove some items from the places menu and add others of my own liking

I had to reformat my hard drive because I was trying to run windows 7 and ubuntu 10.10 on the same drive which caused many problems. After re-installing ubuntu 10.10 alone I noticed that I no longer had access to any of the "Places" sub menus, Home folder through Ubuntu one.

I just installed 10.04 and configured my Radeon 5570 to span my desktop across a pair of identical1600 x 1200 monitorsng the proprietary drivers (and Catalyst Control Center)After doing this I seem to have lost my previous panel configurations that included the Software, Administration and Preferences menu from previous desktop configuration.I am attempting to add the menus back but I cannot find an option to actually "add a menu"... only icon shortcuts to specific applications/utilities

my problem is that the Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu.I'm running 11.04 and I use Ubuntu Classic because I prefer the GNOME interface. The other day I was trying out various audio/multimedia players so I was installing and uninstalling several programs with the Software Center.
I started to play a CD in Audacious when the system crashed. The screen went dark but the computer kept running. I ended up doing a hard reset. Everything booted up normally and everything seems to run fine except my GNOME menu is messed up. The Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu. (I realize I can get to these through System Settings but I want the menus back) Furthermore alacarte will not run so that I can edit the menu contents.
I've tried using one of the old menu versions in /home/dan/.config/menus but they are all outdated and I cannot edit them. It also doesn't bring back Preferences and Administration.I've tried reinstalling alacarte and that doesn't do anything.I've tried using other panel programs like Docky and AWN but I have the same menu problem.I also tried resetting the panels to defaults but that doesn't fix the problem.

There is a plethora of apps in the Debian distro -great stuff! Problem is, there is too much to display efficiently in the menus system as currently deployed. I'm thinking particularly of the Science section. Is there a way to rearrange the menus, so that there are sub-menus, such as Astronomy,Biology, Chemistry, Physics etc?

I'm using Fedora 15, Gnome Shell. Standard window decoration (Adwaita).
Some applications use one set of colors for drop-down menus; other applications use another set of colors.
Nautilus, e.g., uses a white / bright blue combination. Quodlibet and Firefox both use a greyish blue. see attached screenshots.
Are your Gnome applications also doing this sort of thing in Fedora 15 and Gnome Shell?

I backed up all my wallpaper files to a folder in Dropbox. I want to rename them all to wallpaper and let the file system add the number to the name, similar to Windows XP function. I selected all the files but the rename option is not available.

I just upgraded to 10.04, and now I can't figure out how to customize the color of the system drop-down menus (Applications > Accessories, etc.). After I made a change to the appearance, the colors became all washed out (as in the screenshot), and now I can't figure out how to darken the drop-down menus. Anybody have any tips? My ultimate goal is a darkened version of the new Ambiance theme (think XFCE Dusk colors with Ambiance buttons and layout). If it helps, I just upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04, and I've had KDE, XFCE, and GNOME all installed (and most of each set is still there, as I'm experimenting with each one). Also, the system tray is no longer home to a sound volume button, is it supposed to be that way? How to I get one back up there?

I removed my main panel this morning, which meant I lost all the launcher icons like the Terminal, places, system, etc. I right-clicked and selected New Panel, but when I select Add to Panel, it doesn't offer me the ability to put these items back on. The list included Clock, Weather, Garbage and Desktop, but doesn't include the others. I can't relaunch the Terminal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as without terminal or application access, obviously the my system functionality is pretty limited.

I don't know if this is the result of an upgrade, software conflict or I did something I shouldn't have without even noticing. I was able to "Add" the main GNOME menu back by right clicking on the menu, etc. Now, Places and System are sub-menus of the main system menu.

I have installed the Ubuntu distro first in Portuguese. Then, I decided I wanted the English language. I would like that the default folders like "Desktop" and "Documents" were renamed to this names, instead of staying in their Portuguese equivalent.
I can not guarantee this, but I am almost certain I did successfully convert the folder names from Portuguese to English on a previous install when I decided to change the language. So, I suppose this is possible.

I need your inputs on performing some operations:-
a. Traverse from top Level directory, find all the directories
b. Rename all these directories to <original name>.dir
c. Once the renaming is done - search from top level and retain only those directories which has .txt content in them.
d. Delete rest all.....
Can i use xargs here to perform operation a and b , or will sed will be useful.

I named a number of files with spaces in them, and I want to replace the space with "_". However, every time I write a command in the shell with the file name (eg "Spring 2011"), the shell doesn't recognize the file or directory. What can I do about this? Is there any way to use the unicode character for a space?

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p with 2GB RAM. When I was on Ubuntu 10.04, one day suddenly Azureus hung at the 'loading plugin' screen as it begins. I had to hard reboot my system and it(Azureus) never worked after that so I removed it. Then after a couple of months same thing happened with Adobe Acrobat reader. As soon as I opened any pdf and started to scroll, it hung. System didn't respond and had to hard reboot. I moved to foxit reader Then I upgraded to 10.10 and now mplayer hangs occasionally if I try to switch it to full screen. System stops responding totallyn Where to begin debugging from ? I can't figure out any pattern or any way to reproduce it. I haven't tried Acrobat reader and Azureus on 10.10

When the memory usage reaches 95% and above I noticed that the disk activity and load graphs go up and some of my applications are killed by the system. In windows, if someone define a pagefile then the OS will try to use it at the expense of very slow response. Why ubuntu does not use SWAP in such a way?
