Ubuntu :: Application, Places, System Gone From Panel?

Sep 10, 2010

I don't know if this is the result of an upgrade, software conflict or I did something I shouldn't have without even noticing. I was able to "Add" the main GNOME menu back by right clicking on the menu, etc. Now, Places and System are sub-menus of the main system menu.

Ubuntu :: Can't Add Terminal, Places, System Etc To Panel?

Aug 13, 2010

I removed my main panel this morning, which meant I lost all the launcher icons like the Terminal, places, system, etc. I right-clicked and selected New Panel, but when I select Add to Panel, it doesn't offer me the ability to put these items back on. The list included Clock, Weather, Garbage and Desktop, but doesn't include the others. I can't relaunch the Terminal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as without terminal or application access, obviously the my system functionality is pretty limited.

Ubuntu :: Restoring Association For 'places' In Top Panel

Dec 14, 2010

I was having an issue with trying to create a zip file with ubuntu (10.10) after succeeding with that after missing the completely obvious for like an hour, I now have the following issue:If I select any folder from the "places" shortcut on the top panel, i.e. "home" or "downloads", instead of opening in what I believe to be nautilus, it opens in archive manager with the obvious error message "archive type not supported". How can I restore the function of "places" back to normal please?

Ubuntu :: Dropdown Menu In Places On Panel Always Only Launches Banshee?

Aug 7, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid), GNOME 2.30.2. After some time of correct operation, my dropdown menu from "Places" in the GNOME Panel has gone wrong.

If I click Places and then click on any of the dropdown shown, Home Folder, Desktop, Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, Downloads, before the horizontal line separator, Banshee launches. Those after the separator, Computer, Floppy and my Hard Drives, launch correctly.

I have tried restoring the Panel to its original setting with no luck.

Fedora :: Get Rid Of Recent Documents Under Places Menu On Gnome Panel?

Oct 18, 2009

There are measures to stop this in Windows even though there are still things you can't get rid of. Now on to my question, Why can't I edit the Places menu but I can edit the Applications and System menus. I really want to get rid of the Recent Documents menu header. I don't like things like that right up on front street. I am quite a stickler about privacy and one of the reasons I decided to try out linux is because I heard it was better in the sense of respecting privacy. But now I am seeing that you don't even have the ability to get rid of a tracking item such as Recent Documents. Quite disappointing.

I can understand tracking recent changes to the system but it is not necessary to track what you open or what you browse on the internet. Hence Firfox's ability to not store history and the clear cache, history, etc. on shutdown of Firefox. So Am I misinformed about the fact that linux does respect privacy? What kind of world are we coming to that it is necessary to track everything. Especially here in the U.S., I mean I'm thinking 1984 here lol. Anyway, how to remove these tracking features in Fedora. I mean in the sense of just stopping it. It sucks to have to go through and "clear" everything that tracks you every time you want to log off or shut down.

Ubuntu :: Can't Access Folders From "Places" On Panel / Enable This?

Feb 19, 2011

Every time I want to access any subfolder, such as "Downloads", "Pictures", etc of my File System using "Places" on panel, a little window with the message "Error" and "File not found" pop up on my screen.

But if I access "Computer" from "Places", I can access the files I want from "File System".

Is there any way I can sort this out?

Ubuntu :: Main Panel Menu For "Places" - Defaults To Movie Player?

Feb 16, 2011

I don't know how this happened, been using Ubuntu for a few years now (but I still consider myself a newbie): Using 10.10. In the "places" drop down menu, when I click on locations such as Home, Documents, Downloads, etc, the Totem Movie Players runs, and tries to "open" the files in the respective folders --- instead of a Nautilus file manager window opening up.

How could this have happened? I looked in both Nautilus and Movie Player "Preferences", but was unable to find any customizable options that could be related.

Ubuntu :: Access Folder Through "Places" In Top Panel?

Dec 12, 2010

Whenever I try and open any of the files that are in "Places" instead of opening them it opens my Appearance preferences instead. It was happening with everything in the Home folder to start off with (so that's desktop, documents, music, videos, pictures and downloads) and now it's spread to the icons for my windows filesystem and Computer. When I click on the windows filesystem it opens Appearance preferences but it still mounts the drive so I can access my folders by clicking on the desktop icon that appears but I'd prefer if I could access them through "Places" in my top panel.

Ubuntu :: Adding Indicators To Unity's Top/Application Panel?

May 1, 2011

I like Unity, and I appreciate Canonical's work in making the desktop cleaner-looking and more intuitive.I think that being able to customize the top/application(?) panel would be very powerful. By this, I mean both adding and removing indicators.I guess the developers are aware of this, and it's easier said than done. I don't know.Personally, I miss the weather and CPU temperature applets of the old Gnome layout.I tried to apply the best guide I've found to modifying the top panel, to no avail.

After I followed the instructions for the addition of three different indicators (weather, cpu frequency and CPU and RAM % usage), my top panel remained the same.I don't know whether the indicators should show up right away or only upon restart. I did restart, though. For both the weather and CPU frequency indicators, the terminal said:Failed to fetch gzip:/var/lib/apt/lists/partial/fr.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_main_sour ce_Sources Hash Sum mismatchI don't know how to get around this

Ubuntu :: Couldn't Maximize Firefox Cause Application Not Listed On Panel

May 7, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 with dual monitors with a nvidia GeForce 8400GS. I can't figure out how to fix. On the primary screen on the Gnome Panel it shows all my open applications. I currently have VirtualBox, Firefox, and 3 Terminal windows open and they show up on the panel. I can minimize and maximize, etc from the panel bar. This is my issue. If I move say one of the Terminal sessions to the second monitor it disappears from the primary monitor's panel bar.

If I click the hide all applications and show desktop icon there is no way for me to reopen just that terminal window that was on my second screen. I noticed this when I moved my Firefox window to the second screen and minimized everything with the show desktop icon. I could not maximize Firefox cause the application was not listed on the panel. I had to kill Firefox and relaunch.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Panel Covers Top Part Of Application Window?

Jul 5, 2011

after upgrading to Natty (and playing around some with Unity) I noticed that the top part of the application windows are often hidden/covered by the gnome panel (see attachments).

This is particularly annoying for the rdesktop session (second jpg) which I had set up so that it gave maximum desktop size to the rdp session while leaving the panel of top. If you look carefully you see that the "panel gap" is not at the bottom of the screen, while the panel itself covers the top of the rdp window.

It seems like, that the 'anchor point' for application windows used to be '+0+24' (so just below the panel) while now it's '+0+0' in the top left corner of the desktop. I suspect that while playing with unity I reset one of the compiz options which takes care of this. But I can't find it.
