Debian Multimedia :: Applications Menu Rearrangement For Sub Menus?

Apr 18, 2011

There is a plethora of apps in the Debian distro -great stuff! Problem is, there is too much to display efficiently in the menus system as currently deployed. I'm thinking particularly of the Science section. Is there a way to rearrange the menus, so that there are sub-menus, such as Astronomy,Biology, Chemistry, Physics etc?

Debian Multimedia :: Main Menu Won't Work On Some Applications?

Jun 10, 2011

Recently our Son showed me Xscreensaver which he has running on his Debian Squeeze machine. Since I really like what you can do with it and since I use Squeeze as well, I figured that I'd try out the Xscreensaver on my system. Compiz is already working and I haven't had any 3D related problems yet. Anyway, so I install xscreensaver from the software center ... then I go to the main menu ... sure enough it's there alright. Then I place a checkmark in the box to activate/display that feature in the main menu ... but after a second or two the checkmark just vanishes. This happens over and over, even after rebooting.

I thought that a logged in user has full privileges over the items that appear in the main menu? Am I missing something? I don't know of any other (root) method to access the main menu with the apps ... Everything else reacts fine, just the folder for the xscreensaver can't be checked.

Jan 16, 2011

Decided to swap from ubuntu to full blown debian - and glad I did - just feels right using debian to me. Anyways. On my desktop im trying to edit my "Applications" menu" so that it includes "Programming" and "Other" sections of the menu. So i righclick "Applications" goto "Edit Menus" and try to checkbox the "Programming" & "Other" menu options. Alas as soon as I check them - the tick dissapears again - and there is no way for me to edit the menu. Its my system I have full access.

Debian Multimedia :: Creating Sub-menus In GNOME?

Jul 22, 2011

I recently changed from Ubuntu 11.04 to Debian 6.0 and I'm having some trouble editing the applications menu. If I use alacarte to add sub-menus to the Games menu they appear in Applications>Debian>Games rather than Applications>Games. So I tried to do it the manual way. I created .desktop files for all my games and put them in ~/.local/share/applications here is an example:

bone1.desktop
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0

[code]....

But none of my new sub-menus or menu entries in sub-menus appear in my menus or alacarte. I also tried using just categories in gnome-applications.menu but that didn't work either. So what I have at the moment is all my games in one long list, what am I doing wrong?

Is there a way to recover this? Is this a common behaviour? I used to get this problem when I tried out QIMO.

Ubuntu :: Applications / System Menus Are Empty

In trying to fix issues I have been having with my display, I seem to have inadvertently removed all applications from my menu, which is rather annoying. I'm not sure how. I've attached a couple of screenshots to display this.

When trying to access the 'Main Menu' option from the Gnome Control Center, I get the following error in the command line:

Ubuntu :: Applications Disappeared From GNOME Menus?

Jun 19, 2011

my problem is that the Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu.I'm running 11.04 and I use Ubuntu Classic because I prefer the GNOME interface. The other day I was trying out various audio/multimedia players so I was installing and uninstalling several programs with the Software Center.

I started to play a CD in Audacious when the system crashed. The screen went dark but the computer kept running. I ended up doing a hard reset. Everything booted up normally and everything seems to run fine except my GNOME menu is messed up. The Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu. (I realize I can get to these through System Settings but I want the menus back) Furthermore alacarte will not run so that I can edit the menu contents.

I've tried using one of the old menu versions in /home/dan/.config/menus but they are all outdated and I cannot edit them. It also doesn't bring back Preferences and Administration.I've tried reinstalling alacarte and that doesn't do anything.I've tried using other panel programs like Docky and AWN but I have the same menu problem.I also tried resetting the panels to defaults but that doesn't fix the problem.

Fedora :: Drop-down Menus Change Colors Across Applications?

Jul 21, 2011

I'm using Fedora 15, Gnome Shell. Standard window decoration (Adwaita).

Some applications use one set of colors for drop-down menus; other applications use another set of colors.

Nautilus, e.g., uses a white / bright blue combination. Quodlibet and Firefox both use a greyish blue. see attached screenshots.

Are your Gnome applications also doing this sort of thing in Fedora 15 and Gnome Shell?

Debian Multimedia :: Scroll Through The Menus The Highlighter Is Grey And It Makes Things Awfully Hard To Read?

Jul 1, 2010

I recently installed Firefox 3.6 on Debian Squeeze. Everything went smoothly, but Firefox looks weird. The interface reminds me of Windows 98 and anytime I scroll through the menus the highlighter is grey and it makes things awfully hard to read. I'm not sure what could be wrong but I'm hoping someone here I'm not sure how to insert small images as url links so I'll just post links to screenshots I took for reference.[URL]Oh, and one other problem I recently discovered, flash doesn't seem to work. It works just fine in Iceweasel but I am told I have to install it in Firefox. I installed libflashplayer.so in /usr/lib/firefox/plugins but that doesn't seem to have helped. Come to think of it, it probably wouldn't since it's probably the 32-bit version I got from their site, I run on 64 bit.

Ubuntu :: No Right Context Menu For Firefox Menus Under Unity

May 1, 2011

When Unity is disabled, you can delete a bookmark from Firefox by right-clicking on the bookmark, under the bookmark menu, on the Firefox menu bar. When Unity is enabled, you cannot delete a bookmark from Firefox by right-clicking on the bookmark, since a right-click behaves the same way a left-click does. In other words, there doesn't appear to be any context menus.I reverted to the so-called "Classic desktop." There are other aspects about Unity I take issue with, but I will not go into them here.

If the Unity desktop is to be the default desktop for Ubuntu, then it must retain, at a minimum, mind you, the same functionality that was provided by the prior desktop. Access to an application's context menus is one functionality I see no good reason to forgo.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Loses Pull Down Menus And Right Click Menu?

May 18, 2010

I'm running 10.04 w/ Firefox 3.6.

Often, and esp after adding something with apt-get or Synaptics I find Firefox will lose the ability to display either pull down menus or a menu from a mouse's right button.

I've been doing some initial searches for a bug report on Launchpad (but it is unclear if it is being used to actively track bugs vs some other place).

My 'hit it with a hammer' approach to a fix, at least to this point, is to reinstall from the local store or cache, the application;

Synaptic
Status Filter
Firefox (in the Quick Search field)
Mark the existing Firefox for Reinstallation

No files get downloaded, but a restart of Firefox and 'tada'; menus return.

Debian Multimedia :: Remove KDE Applications Without Removing Entire Desktop

May 9, 2015

I've installed Debian GNU/Linux, from a Testing NetInstall ISO, then after setting up the system, I've installed the KDE desktop.Well, I like to have a system with the applications I want, not the applications that the system wants for me, I mean, that's the point of GNU/Linux, isn't?

Thus I want to remove some applications from KDE, let's say KWrite. I know it's a good text editor, but Kate is way better, at least for me, and... I should have the authority to decide what applications I want on my system, I think you got the point. So I installed Kate, and when I try to remove KWrite, APT asks me to remove nothing but this applications: kde-baseapps kde-plasma-desktop.

I don't understand why do KDE forces me to get rid of the entire desktop... when I'm just trying to remove a single application, and a replacement it's already installed.

Debian Multimedia :: Jessie Gnome 3.14 - Installed Applications Not Found

Dec 31, 2015

I have did a clean installation of Debian Jessie today on my laptop and my computer.I use the Gnome 3.14.1 Desktop environment.

I installed Spotify-Client via PPA, and i installed the gconf-editor, gufw and Google Earth. Those 3 applications are not visable in the Gnome applications menu.

If i run then via the terminal, e.g. spotify-client, gconf-editor, gufw and google-earth, the applications are started. They seem to be installed correctly. I tried either running apt-get purge spotify-client gconf-editor google-earth-stable gufw, and reinstalled those applications, to no avail.

I even tried installing another desktop environment, mate-desktop. The shortcuts to the applications do exist in /usr/share/applications. Only not in the Gnome 3 menu. It's strange, because this problem happens both on my desktop and my laptop computer.

I run:
Debian Jessie 8.2.0 with Gnome 3.14.1.
Kernel 3.16.0-4
amd64 architecture

I also tried reinstalling Gnome-Shell and GDM. But it doesn't work.

Before, Debian Wheezy 7.9 was installed, and there was no problem. My Debian installation is fully up-to-date.

Debian Multimedia :: FBPanel Menu Don't Have Icons

Feb 20, 2015

I play around with OpenBox and FBPanel, and quite like it.

I started to install both OpenBox and FBPanel in Debian, and the menu don't have any icons on it.

Simply I'm not going to reconfigure everything in both distro, I copied fbpanel configuration folder to my Ubuntu home.

Then I install FBPanel in Ubuntu it have icons within the menus.

This is FBPanel from my Debian Jessie

This is FBPanel from my Ubuntu

I've googled around without any luck about this problem. It's minor and everything else works okay, but still this shouldn't be happen. Since I see the screenshots of FBPanel in Debian they all have icons on it. Tried changing the icon theme, nothing works. If it's because FBPanel can't find any icon, then the launcher shouldn't have any icons right? Also, I use the exact same configuration on both.

Is it because Debian uses different version of FBPanel? Haven't checked both version tho.
