When the memory usage reaches 95% and above I noticed that the disk activity and load graphs go up and some of my applications are killed by the system. In windows, if someone define a pagefile then the OS will try to use it at the expense of very slow response. Why ubuntu does not use SWAP in such a way?

I dont have any graphical access to the system.
Currently I am fetching the records using "sar -r" command , pasting them in a excel sheet to generate the reports.
I have a Dell Inspiron 700m. I've been running Ubuntu since 2008. Every time I re-install the O.S. I have to alter the video driver. When 10.04 was released it crashed the system and I couldn't figure out how to fix it so I left Karmic on and all was well. Well the DVD/CD drive never worked right under Karmic but no big deal.
Anyway, last week I attempted an upgrade. Everything went fine until upgrade finished and it was time to reboot.
Reboot hung, so I ended up killing the power and doing a cold boot.
Now when booting from the hard drive, I get a brief flash of the Ubuntu welcome screen (in the wrong resolution) and then things die. I'm left looking at a grey curser in the upper left.
Worse yet, I can't boot from a live CD or USB. Neither, Ubuntu, openSUSE or Puppy Linux will boot from CD or from USB.
I double checked my boot order in the BIOS and still nothing boots. I reset the BIOS to factory Default, still nothing boots. I disabled the hard-drive in the boot up order in the bios and still nothing boots.
I can't figure out what happened and I can't access the machine at all exepet to enter the BIOS.
I pressed crtl + alt + f9 on my system and it went to a blank screen. I tried to get it to go back but it wouldn't so I rebooted. Now no matter which kernel I select from the GRUB, even in recovery mode I get the same blank screen and after a few minutes it says

I tried to use the "Rescue a broken system" option on my live cd but as far as I can tell its just a text installer and I can't fix this problem with it.
Completely new to Ubuntu, basically never used anything but Windows before, hadn't even had a chance to properly test out Ubuntu before I broke it. So, sorry if this question is very easy...or if I'm posting it in the wrong place...
Anyway, I cleverly installed the most recent drivers for my graphics card, and it killed Ubuntu - it won't start now. This happens on Windows, too, but Windows will System Restore for me. How might I fix this in Ubuntu?
I can choose Ubuntu from the grub menu, but then the screen goes blank, the fan on my computer goes into overdrive, and nothing happens.

I ran update on my ASUS N51Vf laptop yesterday and among the updates there was one for udev. After installing it udev refuses to start at all saying: "iTCO_wdt: unexpected close, not stopping watchdog". Then I get to login but not for long: after several seconds either system reboots instantly or it hangs shutting down display. Is there any way to rollback udev update somehow considering I can't even login into system?

It actually doesn't get resized at all, expect when moved over Firefox and OpenOffice.I was fiddling in trying to get a workaround for this when suddenly Nautilus started to crash and respawn in an infinite loop. Everything then started to fail. gnome-terminal wouldn't open, xterm wouldn't open, menus wouldn't respond. Etc.The entire GNOME desktop was inoperable.
Logging out and choosing Fluxbox and KDE didn't help. I was sent right back to the GDM login screen. Hmm... seems not related entirely to GNOME... if it all.From a terminal, I could see constant crashes, segfaults on libc6-2.11.1..While at it, I logged on another account (my wife's) and everything was perfectly FINE, with no issues at all. Creating them another account and initializing, it also didn't happen any segfaults. However, everytime I logged in my own account, everything would happen again... nautilus respawning, no terminal, nothing, not even logout would work. Either I hit a MAJOR BUG in libc6 current ubuntu compile, or a setting file inside my home dir got really corrupted and screwed up. It was very frustrating, because this bug was a show stopper. For those who concern, my mobo is an Asus M3A78-EM running a ATI HD 3200 IGP, and I have ubuntu-default fglrx running.
I had run memtest+ overnight and no errors whatsoever. The fact that this was an "account specific" issue deems that there is no hardware fault. I had to migrate my old account to a newly created account, it was hard work because of my 100GB files. Setting ownership in each of them, etc. Everything is OK now, but I really wished to know what dimmed out my bright Lucid Lynx experience yesterday. And I just hope this doesn't happen again.

how graphs can be plotted on a web interface on real time ? I have a web interface coded in PHP mostly and for graphs I have jpgraphs. But the job needs the graphs to be real time not static. As of now there's a server side program that writes onto a csv file. I read data from the file and plot it using jpgraph when the page loads. Regarding the gnome-panel in Ubuntu (64 bit).... I discovered some time ago that I wasn't the only one who routinely (every login) had their gnome-panel appear butchered, for which Alt-F2 then 'killall gnome-panel' would easily fix.
Having become impatient with this over the past 8 months, I decided I would automate the process and so cofiguring the startup applications seemed like a perfectly logical choice to me. Turns out I was wrong. After adding 'killall gnome-panel' to the startup applications not only does the panel fail to load altogether now, but Alt-F2 doesn't even work.
I tried Ctl-Alt-F1 and working with the graphics-free mode thinking I could somehow navigate to the startup apps config file and edit it, but I don't know where it is or how to edit it without logging in as root and I certainly don't know of any 'root password'.
Are there any tutorials for this? My sister wants a really easy application that pops a random quotation every time she presses on an icon (probably appearing in the panel). I'm fairly experienced in programming, but i've never done desktop apps for ubuntu.

I recent installed ubuntu 10.04. Sometimes it is getting stuck during normal operations and when that happens I am not able to type anything. The terminal is opening but I cant type any command in it. Nothing happens when I click on the options in the panel i.e 'Applications', 'Places', 'System' . When I try to restart the computer the shutdown option isn't appearing.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running Ubuntu 10.10 on a Lenovo Thinkpad T61p with 2GB RAM. When I was on Ubuntu 10.04, one day suddenly Azureus hung at the 'loading plugin' screen as it begins. I had to hard reboot my system and it(Azureus) never worked after that so I removed it. Then after a couple of months same thing happened with Adobe Acrobat reader. As soon as I opened any pdf and started to scroll, it hung. System didn't respond and had to hard reboot. I moved to foxit reader Then I upgraded to 10.10 and now mplayer hangs occasionally if I try to switch it to full screen. System stops responding totallyn Where to begin debugging from ? I can't figure out any pattern or any way to reproduce it. I haven't tried Acrobat reader and Azureus on 10.10

After the initial boot screen and check to boot from cd it just resets. It never makes GRUB menu were I can choose the OS I want. I'm dual booting Vista and ubuntu but can't get into either.

It's annoying hearing this extremely loud "BEEP" when I hit backspace one too many times, even when my sound is muted. People look at me like I'm crazy. View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently had to power off my Centos 5.5 box (ungraceful shutdown). When it came back up, three apps popped up: "Welcome to the Gnome Help Browser" (which is Yelp). In another desktop, Konqueror is waiting for a login. This happens every time I restart my system. I haven't been able to figure out how to stop this. Every time I've shut down my system since I had to bring it down hard, it's been gracefully and neither of those apps was running.
