Ubuntu :: Remove 'kubuntu Updates' And All Packages In Software Center
Dec 5, 2010
I have googled it and found 100 pages on this. They all suggest either:however, I am scared to run any of theses. Will that first one remove "kde updates" from my ubuntu software center? Will it break anything else on my desktop?
My internet works when I'm using chrome BUT when I try and use the 'software center' or the 'update manager', I keep getting a Check your internet Connection error. How can I use the net in chrome but ubuntu cannot get out there? I'm using UBUNTU 10.10 with Virtual Box and win7 is the host.
im using fedora 14 and i have a slow internet connection. i want 2 install some packages from the fedora 14 dvd instead of downloading from internet using add/remove packages. i tried to edit /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora.repo and /etc/yum.repos.d/fedora-updates.repo but it dint work.
How to add packages using X-Window's add/remove packages option in RHEL-5.3 as it shows only the currently installed package and and does not show any thing when we click the button "available packages" ?
Greetings: I have tried installing Ubuntu 10.10 from disk and DVD at home in VMware Player 3.1.3 with success. However, when I go to do updates, the Authenticator freezes and comes up with the following error:
Code: Could not initialize the package information
Okay, so my problem is that I can't get rid of some repositories on the left side of the Ubuntu software center.
I've gone to Edit > Software Sources and unchecked everything in Other Software, rebooted and still they remain. I then went into /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ and deleted the offending .list files, and they're still there. How do I get rid of them?
I have an HTPC box that I'd like to make a bit more accommodating to the other folks in my apartment. Is it possible to allow them to install and update software without entering a password? Obviously, I wouldn't want to open access to the repo list or packages from the web.
I've installed Ubuntu via UNetbootin from USB on my child's computer. It comes by default with the sudo command which I find really annoying to work with. I'd rather have my su command.
Now, while googling for a removal instruction, I've read that the sudo command is tied to system functions on some Ubuntu live systems and can't be removed easily. Does anyone know if this applies to the 10.04 live version used by UNetbootin and how to work around this problem?
If not, is it simply enough to remove 'sudo' via the software center? I find many tutorials on how to switch from su to sudo but not much about the other way around.
I have Kubuntu 9.10 and i cant update anything because I have a proxy set up. and I cant figure out how to turn it off. I did turn it off through synaptic but its still turned on.
this is what comes out when I try to install updates through kpackagekit
I'm using kubuntu karmic on my computer. I hv a prob. frm some days that when I run "sudo apt-get update" or "sudo aptitude update", then it downloads same packages every time of 10.5 mb. I also recreated my sources.list file but it has same prob. again..
After working with the Install center for a couple of months with no problems I just woke up to find my Install and Remove buttons are not working. They don't give any errors, they just don't do anything when clicked
In KPackageKit I can't uncheck the 'Proposed updates' or the 'Unsupported updates' boxes in the 'Kubuntu updates' section of the 'Updates' tab of the 'Software Sources' window (brought up by clicking on the 'Edit Origins' button in the 'Settings' tab of 'KPackageKit'). [URL]
I have downloaded kubuntu-desktop on my ubuntu desktop...i must it was very good but it is becoming very confusing for me to seprate out the gnome and kde packages..like if i am downloading something from torrent then by default kde torrent is downloading the file and it is on Gnome..
i have tried to remove it by-
sudo apt-get purge kubuntu-desktop..
but i am still getting the kde icon in my session after logout...and also i am getting different kubuntu packages....

I am trying to uninstall the packages that were installed as part of kubuntu desktop. I have gotten ~3 quarters of them, but didn't know if there was a better way than trying to pore over synaptic.
I have just installed Ubuntu on a computer that doesn't have internet where it is, and I was wondering, what is the best way to get the updates and packages that I want by downloading them somewhere else, putting them on a thumb drive, and then installing them?
I'm a bit confused with this: When I log on a server it says 6 packages can be upgraded. When I run apt-get upgrade though it says that 0 upgraded, 0 new installed, 0 uninstalled and 3 cannot be upgraded. Occasionally, when there are indeed more updates available than those 6 packages, upgrade works fine. I believe the server is up-to-date. Why is that?
I have settled on Ubuntu 9.10 as my preferred distro and was keen to try out which desktop I preferred so I installed kubuntu-desktop and all its dependencies via synoptic package manager following a guide on psychocats.net. Decided I preferred Gnome and wanted to get rid of all duplicated applications etc so followed same guide to remove. [URL]
I tried Kubuntu for few days.now I removed kubuntu using remove kde desktop, autoremove commands.Everything is fine.I also selected gdm, removed kdm.Now I dont find Kubuntu in options in the login screen.I also removed all kubuntu applications. But now when I turn on and off my computer, I find blue kubuntu screen.why is that happening even after removing kubuntu?did I do some mistake? How to remove it?
I added Kubuntu-Desktop components to my Ubuntu 10.04 system using Synaptic Pkg Mgr, with the mistaken expectation that I would then be able to toggle between Ubuntu and Kubuntu Desktops. Of course, when adding Kubuntu-Desktop components, the dependencies feature brought in around 8 or 10 items.
I tried to undo all of this, but I fear I may have removed one or two Kubuntu named packages which may be part of the original Ubuntu installation.
Also there remains a gaggle of applications, such as Dolphin, KNetwork Mgr, Konqueror, just to name a few.
The two-fold question is, (1) How can I get back as closely as possible, to my original, pure Ubuntu installation, short of a complete re-install; and (2) Is there a document out there which lists all of the packages that come standard with the Ubuntu installation.
I am moving from Fedora on this particular computer and I was wondering if I install something like VLC media player, will the Auto Software update look for new releases it they come out?
In Fedora yum and the software updater will look for updates on packages that are installed from other repositories and just wondering if Ubuntu has the same function.
After reading this announcement, I don't understand if Xubuntu 10.04, or others ubuntu 10.04 variants, will be also LTS. What I understand is that :
- Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome) Desktop Edition is a LTS. - Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition is a LTS - Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition is NOT a LTS - Kubuntu 10.04 seems to be a LTS - Xubuntu 10.04 - Mythbuntu 10.04 - Ubuntu Studio 10.04
Obviously, I can't understand how some variant could be LTS and not some others : they are all using the same repositories. So, Canonical would maintain updates for only selected packages ?Does anyone knows more about that LTS attribution ?
I have a Rogers mobile Internet stick. When I plug it into a Windows laptop, it installs software that manages Internet. Would I be able to get Internet if I plugged it into my server running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS? What do I need to do to download Apache Web server onto my Ubuntu? I searched for Apache in Software Center but no results I'm not connected to the Internet so no packages updates so far.
When I try to install software updates by clicking on the red arrow "update" button, I get a final result stating the following: Error authenticating some packages
It was not possible to authenticate some packages. This may be a transient network problem. You may want to try again later. See below for a list of unauthenticated packages. initscripts libavc1394-0 libtiff4 sysv-rc sysvinit-utils
I've tried this a few times...same result over the past 10 days.
I'm a bit of a noob at Ubuntu (I can use the terminal and stuff though), and I want to know if I can specify a custom server for downloading updates and packages.I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to use Adam Internet's FileArena server: [URL]... It's not listed in the list of servers and I want to know how I can add it or use it(because downloads from there don't count towards my download allowance).
After recently installing Linux Mint 10 I have tried to install the updates it says and everytime it tells me I have to fix broken packages first. I have been into something that tells me there is no broken packages. What can I do?
