I have an HTPC box that I'd like to make a bit more accommodating to the other folks in my apartment. Is it possible to allow them to install and update software without entering a password? Obviously, I wouldn't want to open access to the repo list or packages from the web.
View 4 RepliesI don't need password protection, I don't have it on Windows 7 for any acct, and also don't want it on linux.However, as a non-tech person, I couldn't eliminate this requirement.I tried inputting an easy password to minimize inconvenience but was warned it was either "too short" or "too simple".
View 1 Replies View RelatedOkay, so my problem is that I can't get rid of some repositories on the left side of the Ubuntu software center.
I've gone to Edit > Software Sources and unchecked everything in Other Software, rebooted and still they remain. I then went into /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ and deleted the offending .list files, and they're still there. How do I get rid of them?
I've installed Ubuntu via UNetbootin from USB on my child's computer. It comes by default with the sudo command which I find really annoying to work with. I'd rather have my su command.
Now, while googling for a removal instruction, I've read that the sudo command is tied to system functions on some Ubuntu live systems and can't be removed easily. Does anyone know if this applies to the 10.04 live version used by UNetbootin and how to work around this problem?
If not, is it simply enough to remove 'sudo' via the software center? I find many tutorials on how to switch from su to sudo but not much about the other way around.
I have googled it and found 100 pages on this. They all suggest either:however, I am scared to run any of theses. Will that first one remove "kde updates" from my ubuntu software center? Will it break anything else on my desktop?

The day before yesterday I was updated my OS by "update manager", at the time of update process had began a popup message informed me that system only can take partial updates and I did so. After that whenever try to install software from "ubuntu software center" the installation does not performed not even asking for the root password.

To my topic: "Software-center" hangs forever when I try to browse non-installed packages. A search on this forum shows that it's probably a non-solvable bug. No problem, I use Synaptic and am very willing to learn CLI apt-get commands. But for now, uninstalling software-center through Synaptic also wants to uninstall gnome (I assume "all of it"?), and I'm not going to agree on that!
Is there a way to getting around not having to put in the user password everytime my Wireless connects, or Install software, etc? I changed the user role to Administrator under users from the control panel (x Windows user )

Worst case, I can find a XP machine, install the maxtor program, and remove the password. I would prefer to not have to install anything though.

However, it's already getting on my nerves that I have to type my password every time I want to install something. Where and how do I disable this? I already set myself as admin in the user settings but that doesn't seem to work.
This goes for things like changing system settings too, it's really annoying.
I pay $85 for each of my ebooks and have my UoP password and username to open them.The problem is that I want to move them to my kindle dx which does not support the password part of the pdf file.How can I remove the password protect from this file.Each page is password protected, but I only have to put in my password one time and it opens the whole ebook.However, on the kindle dx, the cursor does not go to the username or password box, so i can't open it on my kindle.I tried buying and using a PDF restrictions remover but all it does is say "Restrictions Removed" but the password protect is still on when I transfer it to the kindle.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've just did a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.10 x86 in a 4 gig pendrive.Just one ext4 partition for / and /home and a swap partition. Only one user created during installation.Everything's fine so far except for two things:-If I launch synaptic from the start menu, it asks for my password which I type in or even copy-paste to be sure.Strangely it always comes back saying incorrect password. If I open a terminal and call "sudo synaptic" and type in my password when prompted, the application shows up fine. Again if I do the same via the Run dialog (alt+F2), that is "sudo synaptic", nothing comes up. If I just type "synaptic", a pop up says that as a user I won't be able to install anything and blah-blah, and the application displays properly

The reason I want to delete the LUKS password is simply that I do not want to have to put it in for each server just to get the system to boot. I am planning to cluster the servers as well and like I said before I don't want to put the password in each time since they won't be running all the time.

I know I can ssh login without password from a local to a remote. My question is how I can ssh without password from the remote to another remote. Say, I have three machines: A, B, C where A is the local machine. I use the same private/public key pair for all the login. What I can do are:
1. ssh from A to B.
2. ssh from A to C.
3. If I am sitting in the computer B (or B is local), then I can ssh from B to C.
What I am not able to do is:
After I ssh from A to B, I cannot ssh from the B to C. When I try to ssh from B to C, it asks me a passphrase.

When running MUTT on a RHEL 5.4 box, I get the message:

I choose "accept always", but the same message appears next time. I do not wish to have a certificate requirement for MUTT and did not intentionally set the program up to include this feature. How can I get rid of it? My second choice would be to get a new certificate, but then I have to go through this every year. I have MUTT working on two other servers and this does not happen.
I am relatively new to Fedora and appreciate it is intended to be a bleeding/leading edge distribution but the continual requests to reboot the computer after updates is intrusive and seems rather odd for a unix operating system. It is often not clear to me why it is necessary when I look at the names of the items triggering the request.
