View 2 RepliesI have just installed Ubuntu on a computer that doesn't have internet where it is, and I was wondering, what is the best way to get the updates and packages that I want by downloading them somewhere else, putting them on a thumb drive, and then installing them?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm a bit confused with this: When I log on a server it says 6 packages can be upgraded. When I run apt-get upgrade though it says that 0 upgraded, 0 new installed, 0 uninstalled and 3 cannot be upgraded. Occasionally, when there are indeed more updates available than those 6 packages, upgrade works fine. I believe the server is up-to-date. Why is that?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am moving from Fedora on this particular computer and I was wondering if I install something like VLC media player, will the Auto Software update look for new releases it they come out?
In Fedora yum and the software updater will look for updates on packages that are installed from other repositories and just wondering if Ubuntu has the same function.
After reading this announcement, I don't understand if Xubuntu 10.04, or others ubuntu 10.04 variants, will be also LTS. What I understand is that :
- Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome) Desktop Edition is a LTS.
- Ubuntu 10.04 Server Edition is a LTS
- Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Edition is NOT a LTS
- Kubuntu 10.04 seems to be a LTS
- Xubuntu 10.04
- Mythbuntu 10.04
- Ubuntu Studio 10.04
Obviously, I can't understand how some variant could be LTS and not some others : they are all using the same repositories. So, Canonical would maintain updates for only selected packages ?Does anyone knows more about that LTS attribution ?
I have a Rogers mobile Internet stick. When I plug it into a Windows laptop, it installs software that manages Internet. Would I be able to get Internet if I plugged it into my server running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS? What do I need to do to download Apache Web server onto my Ubuntu? I searched for Apache in Software Center but no results I'm not connected to the Internet so no packages updates so far.
View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to install software updates by clicking on the red arrow "update" button, I get a final result stating the following:
Error authenticating some packages
It was not possible to authenticate some packages. This may be a transient network problem. You may want to try again later. See below for a list of unauthenticated packages.
initscripts
libavc1394-0
libtiff4
sysv-rc
sysvinit-utils
I've tried this a few times...same result over the past 10 days.
I'm a bit of a noob at Ubuntu (I can use the terminal and stuff though), and I want to know if I can specify a custom server for downloading updates and packages.I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and I want to use Adam Internet's FileArena server: [URL]... It's not listed in the list of servers and I want to know how I can add it or use it(because downloads from there don't count towards my download allowance).

I'm running OpenSuse 11.3. -After running 'zypper update' I see it's listing a couple of new packages it wants to install (flash-player among them). I thought update would mean update existing packages, not install random new packages. Is there a way to restrict zypper to install only updates and no new packages?
-I'm trying to find a repository that has the complete courier mail server (smtp, webmail and all the rest, not just the imap server) but I'm having no luck. Anyone know where I could get it? I know I can build it myself. -Is there a way to automatically download all available updates so that they can later be installed interactively?
I'm using an old computer with Lenny for a few weeks. After updating OpenOffice last night from backports to 3.2 and doing an update this morning, there is a long list of packages and libraries in the auto removable section of Synaptic that I suspect or am absolutelt certain that I don't want to remove (Rhytmbox, for example).

I'm trying to do the normal setup of sharing some dir's on my linux machine using samba, to allow a windows laptop to access them.
I've managed to get the printer shared and this is allowing to send print jobs, which come out beautifully! however the actual file shares still aren't accessible
Depending on my settings, if I have security = user then when I access from the windows machine I get a username and password box - I dont want this functionality, I want the system to access right away as it would between two windows shares.
If i change security = share then it simply lists the shares, but tells me they are all inaccessible.
I've googled and searched here, tried various different things but I just can't see why/where its asking me for the username/password combo.

I use a commercial finite element code to produce animated GIF files of my calculation results. In case you are interested, the code is COMSOL Multiphysics 4.0a, running on Fedora 13 x86_64. Note that the FEA code only has the option of saving movies as animated GIF files in Linux.
These GIF files tend to be quite large, and although they are adequate for my own use on my local computer system, I wish to convert these files into other standard formats of more manageable size. These smaller files would then be easier to distribute to others or to include in presentations and reports.
I would like to ask for recommendations for either GUI-based video player/conversion applications or command line codes that could, for example, convert from animated GIF files to MPEG files. I would prefer an application that allows for multiple input/output format choices as well as conversion options for changing the playback speed, splicing out a portion of the original animation, etc.

View 4 Replies View RelatedToday I noticed my sdl modem flashing away when I had no internet access programs active as far as I was aware. I did a 'ps ax' to see what was running. I saw nothing that warranted internet access. I didn't recognize the gvfsd-computer process and tried finding documentation about it on my system. I began to feel uncomfortable when I couldn't find anything showing what it was. Finally, I killed the process and the internet access immediately stopped. Research on the net showed that gvfsd-computer is a file browser. I find this very disturbing. Why was a file browser accessing my disk drive (the light was flashing) and why was it accessing the internet without my requesting such an action?

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.
I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?
There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?
