Greetings: I have tried installing Ubuntu 10.10 from disk and DVD at home in VMware Player 3.1.3 with success. However, when I go to do updates, the Authenticator freezes and comes up with the following error:

I have done a scratch install of Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) on my PC with an unrecoverable error during the installation phase. However, I was able to boot the PC with Natty but my package manager and update managers are not working properly. I am pasting below the error message shown by package manager.

I readded all my sources and ppa's on the upgrade but now they are disabled? Also I have a malformed line..Why would they be disabled if I changed them all one by one through software sources?

I performed the update from 10.10 online so I don't have the cd nor will I be able to download it. Not enough time to do so.

This is the error I got when I tried to update it today. On the top the icon for the update manager is a red circle with a white line like a stop sign. Why can't Ubuntu store configuration information in a way that it wouldn't need to be clobbered in order to apply security updates? For example, this mornings updates told me I had to choose between using a new version of smb.conf that's part of the security patches, stick with the old version, or let the update installer merge them. Of course, the first two choices have obvious drawbacks: why should I have to choose between losing all my SMB settings or refusing security fixes? So I chose the merge, which came back with "Conflicts found during three-way merge! edit `/etc/samba/smb.conf' and sort them out manually."

I get a similar message when running sudo apt-get update in terminal.
Gmail is not working in standard view mode in firefox after recent updates. I don't know what is wrong but it is not loading the standard view, all other browsers load it well on ubuntu 9.10 So don't know where the problem is.

How can I find information about what files it has installed and where? I was expecting to get some header files from this package but cannot find them in the normal places like /usr/include etc.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI have the package "xvidcap" (Screen recorder) installed in Ubuntu, the problem I have is the version I have installed is an older version and there is a newer version avaliable, but I don't want to install the newer version as this breaks some functionality regarding screen capturing e.g. audio capturing. But each time I run Update Manager the package appears in the list to be upgraded.
Is there anyway to flag the package as do not upgrade or something to make it not appear in Update Manager or at least have it greyed out so the checkbox isn't automatically checked each time update manager is ran?
I just installed ubuntu 11.04 and am experiencing problems loading applications in the software center. I select a department to see what's available and nothing comes up, it just keeps loading.
