View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to install Ubuntu 11.04 ( Not using WUBI ).. My already present OS Windows 7 is not being detected. More over I get two options,
1)Erase the disk and install
2)Specify the partitions
When I try to specify the partitions, my hard disk is shown.. but my 4 partitions are not visible.
I was using Super+M keyboard shortcut yesterday to enable/disable the Compiz Negative theme (inverted colours), but now when I do the same keyboard shortcut it just opens the Mail/Chat/Broadcast menu next to the date/calendar/clock in the top panel.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a lenovo thinkpad and my internal microphone works only when i connect another mic through the jack. Even the mic mute button present on my laptop is not working.(There is no such problem on windows se7en) Earlier, even an external mic never used to work. After some searching i added "options snd-hda-intel model = thinkpad" to my alsa-base.conf file. And then the internal mic started working only when an external mic was connected.
when i type "cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec" i get:
Codec: Realtek ALC269
Codec: Intel G45 DEVCTG
I looked into the HD-Audio-Models.txt but couldn't locate the exact model for ALC269 so i searched online and decided to put model = thinkpad as i'd mentioned earlier. But The alsa-mixer shows card to be HDA Intel and chp as intel g45 devctg. Moreover, even this partial working of mic(s) is when i choose the input source in the alsamixer to be front mic and not int mic.
I've seen people use the fire effect when minimizing windows and even saw someone setting up the fire effect to fit their needs in compiz but I do not have the fire effect in my compiz effects manager. Where can i get it??

View 3 Replies View RelatedI used Wubi to do the install and pointed it to D drive because it was basically free except for itunes... anyway, once it had finished, I turned off my laptop, turned it back on and it showed Windows and Ubuntu, I loaded Ubuntu and it said it was continuing installation, anyway it said copying files, and stuff and I didn't know if it was overwriting vista so it would go on the C drive instead of the D drive. Anyway, I just want Ubuntu on D and Vista on C. Is Ubuntu gonna' overwrite Vista?
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor some reason, sometimes after I just turn the computer off by pressing the power button while hooked up to the video mount, I'll turn the computer on and (after it automatically logs into the standard user) come to a blank black screen. The only thing I can access is by pressing Alt+Tab to get a "no present windows" window, and thats it. Could it be that an activity or something has been deleted somehow?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi am installing 11.2 for a friend of mine and one of the reasons he wanted linux was that cool looking burning windows when you close them.
so i installed it and wanted to activate the effect but i could not find it.
i am pretty sure i got it running on my 11.1.
i searched the web for hours but was not successful. maybe i used the wrong tags.
Using gnome I love the desktop effects, except the 'maximize window' effect. There is an annoying delay when I maximize a window. Is there a way to turn this particular effect off, while leaving all the others on. I looked in control center>desktop effects, but the option is not there. The only way I could turn off the maximize effect was unchecking the "enable desktop effects" checkbox. But this turns all effects off. All other effects run smooth and snappy.

View 9 Replies View Relatedfor some unfathomable reason Kwin just went all Compiz on my Kubuntu Natty 11.04. Fresh install, x86 Emachines V140 AMD GPU, Mobility Radeon 4200, radeon driver. Anyhoo, desktop effects got disabled out of the blue, probably after some setting I've changed, and there was no way to get them back. I'd hit enable effects in the Desktop Effects panel, whereupon I would get a notification that dekstop effects were disabled because of another function using Kwin, and asking me to hit CRTL ALT F12 to restart them. Which would get me nowhere. I tried disabling functionality checks, getting the message:

Is it possible to map the same "Present Windows - All Desktops" action which is invoked by activating the top left corner of active screens via a keyboard shortcut? I basically want to ape OSX and have an expose-like button, the screen edge works fine for now, but I would love a keyboard shortcut also. Is it possible? Also, when I set up a custom keyboard shortcut to run yast, I initially tried using the same command from the KDE menu: /usr/bin/xdg-su -c /sbin/yast2
However, when I use the keyboard shortcut to launch this command, I get problems when trying to use zypper after the initial launch using the keyboard shortcut(from yast GUI or CLI). The error basically states another instance of yast2 already exists. The problem is only with the app/repo management modules though; for instance I can launch yast (using keyboard shortcut or start menu) and access hardware info, sudo users etc, I just can't access software/repo management stuff. Even when I kill the offending PID from the CLI I still get the error and have to restart the box to rectify it proper. So I changed the keyboard shortcut command to : /usr/bin/kdesu /sbin/yast2
and this seems to have resolved the problem. My second question is what is the difference between the two in this particular instance and why does one cause problems (xdg-su) and the other does not (kdesu).
Occasionally, kwin will crash and recover itself, but afterwards, my system starts using GTK notifications (yellow popup bubbles with the pie graph countdown timer). I've tried restarting knotify4 to no avail.

Kubuntu Maverick Meerkat 10.10 says "Unable to contact KDED". This in return disables all of my KDE services. I have already freshly installed 10.10 2 times. Also when I first login it says KWIN has crashed, but I see it running in the service Manager. I have no internet service without KDE services.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am trying to find out where in the system are the files that store information on the following: 1. keyboard shortcuts, and 2. which applications and which windows were open before the session ended. Regarding (2): I really like the fact that when I log back in, OpenSuse pops up all the windows that I had open before I last logged out. I know that this information must be stored somewhere. And most probably in my home folder. But I can't seem to find it in ~/.kde or ~/.kde4 Regarding (1): Again, I really like the Mac-OS style behavior that one gets with Ctrl+F9/F10. But sometimes I invoke it inadvertently when - as far as I can remember - my fingers were on the trackpad only. I have not been able to figure out how I do it. But I would like to be able to do it consciously - without pressing Ctrl+F9/F10. Does anyone know what could be happening. i have an HP Pavilion dv4 laptop with an otherwise annoyingly sensitive track pad.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm having a strange problem with KDE, to which there may be no solution but thought I'd ask anyway. I play several games (Neverball, several MAME games and even ZSNES and others) and it seems that if I have desktop effects turned on, KWIN will crash every time I exit a full screen game such as those mentioned above and others. If I disable desktop effects before starting the game, everything is fine. The games themselves run fine while desktop effects are enabled, I don't have to remember to disable desktop effects before clicking on a game.
