View 2 RepliesI noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:
system-backgrounds-gnome
When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?
I've recently upgraded my squeeze to sid, then installed gnome shell as default window manager.
1. Gnome shell was normal until yesterday, I upgraded new packages up to date, then I cannot log into gnome shell any more (however, fallback mode is normal). It shows a sad computer screen with message "Oh no, something has gone wrong". The only thing I can do is pressing the logout button to log out.
2. Debian is running on my thinkpad T60p, and I can choose keyboard model in Gnome2, but I can't find any options in the system setting in Gnome shell to change keyboard layout for model IBM T60/R60.
I installed Gnome Nanny. I can choose the times when the computer can be used and limit the internet. However, these times are not being enforced. Is there some other settings that are used to enforce these settings?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu in my PC, without uninstalling windows coz it`s not really mine, its my father`s. When he saw the boot (like a month later, he REALLY uses the PC...) he went crazy and instantly ordered me to "uninstall that thing". Of course i`m not stupid to do that after a month of seeing how Ubuntu is... I want to know if/how can I make the pc start on windows auto, without prompting by showing the choose system screen, and when i open boot menu (i don`t remember, but i think its F-eight) i have both choices, so I can keep Linux without him knowing.

Am I the only one who gets this on gnome everytime I start up package manager or package finder in 11.3?
System management is locked by the application with pid 6890 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd)
I literally have to kill -9 pid everytime I run it. What is going on here?
I can launch it with gnome-dictionary, but that is not a package in aptitude.

I am running Sid. After a dist-upgrade, when I boot into a DE, trying to run applications doesn't work.
If I click on an icon, I see a "Starting <Application>" icon on the task bar and then it dies. If I try running Alt-F2 and then typing the name of the application, nothing happens.
I use Terminator as my terminal and in the last couple of months, I need to either run
LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libfreetype.so.6 /usr/bin/terminator
or
symbolic link /usr/local/lib/libfreetype.so.6 to the above file
In order to have the application run without the error message: You need to install the python bindings for gobject, gtk and pango to run Terminator.
I have been using the symlink method for the most part, but when I run an apt upgrade, often the /usr/local/lib/libfreetype.so.6 symblink changes to point to /usr/local/lib/libfreetype.so.6.5.0 and I have to manually re-link.
I have tried reinstalling gobject, gtk and pango packages for python but nothing has worked.
Have been running F 15 with Gnome, no problems. Decided to install KDE to compare to Gnome. (I used KDE several versions ago). Desktop appears normal, however only some applications would open. Reinstalled KDE, again desktop appears normal, however now no applications open (including settings and file system).

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running the latest 10.10 and loving it, former Windows user I noticed just shortly after installing 10.4, that a few select applications would open and I would see "Starting (application name)" and then it would close and nothing else would happen. I suspect this is related to the fact that I recently took my Video Card out of my PC and Ubuntu is not detecting my Intel Chip?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI don't know if this is the right place to post this but here goes anyway.
System:
ASUS Pro50n Laptop
Distro: Arch Linux
WM/DE: Gnome
I've recently installed Arch linux with the gnome desktop environment, and everything is working fine apart from HAL and DBUS. I'm not sure why this problem is happening and I have no idea about any settings for HAL and DBUS all I know is what it says in the wiki.
The problem I have is that HAL and DBUS fail to start. I have tried /etc/rc.d/hal start and get the message BUSY.. then FAIL. I have tried /etc/rc.d/dbus start and get exactly the same. I have tried restart and that also fails. *EDIT* I have just tried /etc/rc.d/dbus start again without changing a thing and dbus has started successfully but HAL still fails.
The further problem, which I think is related to HAL not starting... possibly... Is that I can't watch DVD's / anything in the DVD drive. I can see it in Places >Computer as "CD/DVD Drive: 3_MEN_IN_ANOTHER_BOAT" but when I click to load it or if I open Totem and try and load it all I get is the error: Unable to mount location: Not Authorized. Is this related to HAL or is this a completely different issue?
*EDIT* fixed the HAL problem, reinstalled xf86-input-evdev package and it seemed to fix the problem. However I am still having a problem with watching DVD's
I installed today's set of updates in CentOS 5.3, and now every time I start an some applications, X resets and I am logged out.I would appreciate any tips on diagnosing this problem.
View 1 Replies View RelatedUbuntu 10.01 Lucid I had a few problems with applications failing to install properly with Synaptic Package Manager which resulted in a slew of launchers in my Applications > Other folder which all delivered error messages. These all had some kind of grey screen icon. I deleted them after uninstalling the applications which failed to install (wine 1.2, wine-gecko 1.2, then later wine 1.0, Wine-gecko 1.0, and winetricks.) I didn't notice that some non-wine applications also were given the grey-screen icon, and accidentally deleted "Archive Mounter." I know that I only deleted the launcher not the application, but don't know how to re-create the launcher in the Applications menu. Would someone...
1 - Right-click on the Applications panel,
2 - Select Edit Menus
3 - Find "Archive Mounter" (probably in "Other" folder)
4 - Select Properties for the launcher, look at the Properties sheet and tell me what the Archive Mounter command is, so I can re-create the launcher manually? And if you could, the path to the icon too
I have what seems to be far to many KDE programs running on my Gnome desktop is this normal?
I thought there would be gnome equivalents.
I'll list them:
Is this normal for a Gnome Desktop Fedora installation and if so which are completely arbitrary and can be removed safely?
Also is xorg supposed to use 8-20% of the CPU when all that is running is the system monitor? The system monitor application also uses 20-70% of the CPU when it is running by itself also. (Intel Pentium 4, 3.2ghz)
I didn't choose any KDE desktop Applications Intentionally
I recently installed Fedora 12 and none of the Gnome applications have menus.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed Fedora 13 and use the Gnome desktop. I want to keep my installation as clean as possible and have heard some contrary advice about installing both Gnome and KDE desktops, so I want to stay with just Gnome. In the past I have mixed both and feel that resulted in tons of packages that I probably didn't need and tons of updates all the time. However, some applications seem to be KDE applications and installing them requires installation of many KDE packages. This is a source of confusion for me:
Is there a distinction between Gnome applications and KDE applications? If so, how do you tell the difference? Should one NOT install KDE applications if you are using the Gnome desktop and not interested in installing KDE desktop? Is there a best practice on how to approach which software to install so that you do not create a mix and match mess?
Is it safe to use applications for GNOME, say, Disc Burner, in KDE?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI run Gnome and i want KDE applications to use the same icon set as i have for my Gnome desktop. I have searched the file system and found a folder called "default.kde4" in /usr/share/icons. I assume this is where KDE applications pull their icons from. Firstly, this folder is a linked folder. How do i find out where the original folder that it is linked to is? Secondly, i am assuming, that the KDE icons won't be a name for name match for the icons i am using in Gnome (Faenza just in case anyone is curious). What is the easiest way to get the KDE icons changed for the one's i am using in Gnome?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi can run kde apps in gnome, and vice versa. So, it got me wondering, why does there need to be kde applications and gnome applications? if they both will run on the other, then whats the difference? does it have to do with how they're written? is one better than the other?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt is possible to set a keyboard shortcut to start an application in KDE? As example, win+f to start firefox. I know it is an option in menu editor, but it doesn't work. From the many distros I tried with KDE ( openSUSE, Arch, Gentoo, Mandriva ), only in Fedora 12 worked this option, and I hoped it will in F13 too, this is one of the reasons I installed Fedora. So it is a bug, regression, or I am doing things not the right way?

I have it set up to start my music player (RBox) and torrent program (Transmission) when I log in. The problem is all my data is set on my 1TB external hard drive, because my internal hard drive only has 80GBs of space. When I start up the programs open but the external hasn't had time to link the file directories which messes screws up my torrents into having to verify every time and my music has to "recalibrate" as it were.
This isn't an issue when I manually open the programs after a minute or so but what my question really comes down to is... Is there a way to delay an automatic startup? Say, run application 3 minutes into boot up?
I need to start a tcpdump, and then download a file by FTP. I can't understand any way of achieving this in the tcpdump man file.
