Ubuntu :: Ownership - Natty Broke Support For 3.2 - VERR_SUPLIG_OWNER_NOT_ROOT Error
May 20, 2011
I've used VirtualBox in the past, and I have lots of virtual machines. However, Natty broke support for 3.2, so I tried 4.0. But 4.0 doesn't work due to the VERR_SUPLIG_OWNER_NOT_ROOT error. So i tried fixing it with setting ownership and group of /usr to root:root, recursively. (chown -R root:root /usr) However, now I can't use Software Center or sudo.
Gksu crashes. The only way to use root is now su. how I can reset the ownership of the folders and files in /usr? I want it to be back to normal. And for the record, I've got a backup which includes /usr. But I can't use it because it's too old. (I think it's from before Natty.) However the permissions are in order for that backup. (Rsync'd through BackInTime)
I use an Atheros AR922X wireless card in my router/access point and everything was working fine under maverick. Now when I try and start hostapd I get this:
So after my Natty upgrade, mpd stopped working. All I can see in the logs are the following lines:
No protocol specifiedxcb_connection_has_error() returned true The Pulse Audio wiki suggests that this might be an access rights problem: [URL]...hts_are_broken I tried that, but with no success.
Anyone else had this problem? And any ideas about how I can diagnose and fix this?
I have been trying to use the amd64 version of the natty mini iso installer. The installer crashes with the log stating bad address us.archive.ubuntu.com. This is true for any archive I select. error is: mirror does not support the specified release (natty) Anyone know of a working mirror or if one will ever work? Not a confidence builder in the development.
I also tried the Maveric version of the mini iso. It also crashes with complaints about a bad kernel. So far a wasted day. Just add to this I tried the normal natty iso. The problem is in the manual partitioning. It locks up solid while trying to set partitions. Is there a later release of the iso?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on an Apple iMac 27". After updating yesterday, I no longer have working graphics drivers or a working mouse. The graphics card in question is an ATI HD 5750, and mouse is an Apple bluetooth 'magic' mouse. So far I've managed to fix the mouse, but not the graphics.
At first I didn't have any display at all, but I was able to ssh into the machine and get part way through the proprietry graphics driver installation. The installation failed, but at least I have something displaying on the screen now.I have tried the fix in this thread:[URL]The installation of this completes, however the graphics driver is not working. If I go to Administration > Hardware Drivers, then Ubuntu tells me the ATI driver is in use, but it's clearly not (takes 3 seconds to move a window).I've tried booting into the .24 kernel instead of the .25, but that's even worse since not the mouse doesn't work in .24 (it used to work fine)
The update manager told me there were several packages to update, and I as usually said 'OK'. Then, it told me that some packages could not be installed. I ran dpkg in a terminal window, and this is what it looks like:
> sudo dpkg --configure -a Setting up openjdk-6-jre-headless (6b18-1.8-4ubuntu3) ... update-alternatives: error: alternative link /usr/bin/java is already managed by java~. dpkg: error processing openjdk-6-jre-headless (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2 dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of openjdk-6-jre: openjdk-6-jre depends on openjdk-6-jre-headless (>= 6b18-1.8-4ubuntu3); however: Package openjdk-6-jre-headless is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing openjdk-6-jre (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of icedtea-6-jre-cacao: icedtea-6-jre-cacao depends on openjdk-6-jre-headless (= 6b18-1.8-4ubuntu3); however: Package openjdk-6-jre-headless is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing icedtea-6-jre-cacao (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of icedtea6-plugin: icedtea6-plugin depends on openjdk-6-jre (= 6b18-1.8-4ubuntu3); however: Package openjdk-6-jre is not configured yet. dpkg: error processing icedtea6-plugin (--configure): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Errors were encountered while processing: openjdk-6-jre-headless openjdk-6-jre icedtea-6-jre-cacao icedtea6-plugin
I browsed on internet to find how to upgrade to 11.04 and find the answer.Press Alt+F2 and enter the command update-manager -dAfter authentication, the manager showed the updates and at some point of time, I got the following error.
---- E: Encountered a section with no Package: header E: Problem with MergeList
I was messing around with some stuff I probably shouldn't have when trying to get my Intel graphics card working better (that's another problem completely). Now the update manager has ceased to work. Every time I try to use it this error pops up:
Quote:

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message:

I am running on ubuntu 11.04, and to keep my system uptodate, i am randomly checking and installing updates, but this time it showed me error, see the screenshot
I already checked (after googling) the canonical partner and canonical partner(source something) repositories under synaptic >settings>repos.. and nothing happened, the error is still there..
Story: Installed 11.04 Natty Narwal from a live cd on my 2 year old HP Elitebook. The installation completed successfully according to the Live Session. I restart... Quote: GRUB Loading stage1.5 GRUB loading, please wait... Error 15
I have 2 other operating systems on the hdd, that I was previously managing with grub which was stored in the boot directory of Ubuntu 9.04 (on the partition that I formatted to install 11.04) What I have on hand:
So I've been looking to try out Airpwn, but it seems to only run with Python2.4. Natty, buy default uses Python2.7, and Airpwn will not compile with it. Python2.5 is the lowest in the repos. I tried just downloading Python2.4, and doing the "./configure, make, make install" dance, but I end up with
Code: root@L1NUX:~/Python-2.4# make [...code snipped to save space...] Aborted make: *** [sharedmods] Error 134
install Python2.4 on Natty? Any method will do fine. If you have a .deb that would be even greater. Anyone who's been able to run Airpwn on something other than Python2.4 is also welcome to tell me their solution. (There used to be a .deb for Airpwn itself, but it seems one was never made for Natty.)
My current setup was: 4 x 500 gb hard drives in (software / onboard controller) Raid 10 (1 +0) with Windows 7 x64 as the primary OS 1 500 gb hard drive with Ubuntu 10.10 installed
After upgrading to Ubuntu 11.04 Beta, I hit the Grub Error. I have removed the 5th HDD but still getting it on boot into Windows 7. I am currently in the process of copying all files from my raid via a 10.10 flash drive boot (fortunately was able to mount my raid's partitions).
I have been getting video error's in gnome-panel since I upgraded to Natty. It seems to become transparent on part of it, and my background covers it. I have tried deleting my gnome-panel preference's, to no aval. Does anybody know how to fix this?
after upgrading 10.10 to Natty 11.04 my Kubuntu 64-bit System won't boot anymore. During upgrade an error message appears, saying GRUB2 cannot be installed into a partition (something about bad idea and blocklist). First reboot shows this error message:
Code:
Error: symbol not found: 'grub_env_export'
I tried to repair GRUB2 by using a Live CD, mounting all needed partitions, chroot to my installed system and running update-grub2. This time no error message appears. Next reboot the system does hang, showing "Booting..." for minutes. Nothing happens.I'm using a partition boot loader (for Linux) since years on my Netbook / Notebook. Due to security reasons all partitions of the mobile device were encrypted. Unfortunately I also need an Windows system, so the first partition contains an Win 7 installation encrypted with Truecrypt.
Truecrypt needs to be installed into the MBR (as far as I do know and from my first tests some times ago). So I installed the Linux bootloader into the /boot partition (sda6). Linux root partition is also encrypted using cryptsetup/Luks.How can I fix this problem, keep my Truecrypt/Windows system and boot the encrypted Linux system?
Basically my problem can be neatly summed up as the problem described at both here and here. I can only presume it's a rather uncommon problem to do with a particular hardware setup since I can't find any widespread bug reports of it, but it is (on my system at least) highly replicable. I can reboot my system from Natty and it either one of two scenarios. It can reboot the system (as first asked) then reboot again in the middle of POST and splurge an error about interrupting POST at me (and keep giving me this error every reboot till I go into the bios and resave some settings).
Alternatively, it can get all the way into grub, where I can dual boot into Windows, windows will get some arbritary point in (usually the login screen give or take 10 seconds) and then reboot at random. It's not even a windows crash since I've disabled auto-reboot.I'm not sure what's causing it but I can only presume it's something at the kernel level, since I'm not sure anything else would have the kind of power needed to interfere with the system at an 'outside the OS' level. As such I wouldn't have any idea how to go about fixing it, but I can hope that someone here may be able to point me in the direction of potential settings I can change (probably BIOS I guess) that might aleviate the issue till a fix is found.
Since upgrading to Natty I have a very annoying issue and since I am unable to resolveWhenever I start the synaptics package manager I get the following message:An error occurred:E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'sudo dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem. E: _cache->open() failed, please report.Once I run sudo dpkg --configure -a from the terminal this is what I get:Setting up xulrunner-1.9.1 (1.9.1.18~hg20110309r27352+nobinonly-0ubuntu1~umd1) ...No further progress the machine hangs indefinitely on this, need to kill terminal to exit. Even hours waiting does not show any progress.
I just upgraded from Lucid to Maverick and I absolutely cannot get the proprietary fglrx driver to install. I've downloaded the binaries from ATI and they fail to install with a message that says:
Code: Error: ./default_policy.sh does not support version default:v2:i686:lib::none:2.6.35-22-generic:; make sure that the version is being correctly set by --iscurrentdistro Removing temporary directory: fglrx-install.Dtv3Sn I tried installing the drivers from the System>Administration>Additional Drivers and it fails with
SystemError: installArchives() failed Based on what little I could find I guess the newest version of Xorg broke the ATI drivers. Is this true and is there absolutely no way to use the proprietary drivers? I'm a World of Warcraft nerd and the fglrx drivers are the only ones that work for me
I am renting a dedicated server and I'm following a tutorial to install rutorrent. I'm asked to: sudo apt-get install -y build-essential pkg-config libcurl4-openssl-dev libsigc++-2.0-dev libncurses5-dev lighttpd nano screen subversion libterm-readline-gnu-perl php5-cgi apache2-utils

I have followed ideas posted in different threads for this problem but none have worked. I'm new to linux so here comes the dumb questions. What is acpid and what problems will it cause if ignored?
I use the script h264enc (installed from the repos) to encode my dvds into avi and mp4. It was working flawlessly under 9.10, now I get the error that MEncoder doesn't support AAC encoding? I have installed all the restricted drivers and I can play dvds, mp4's, .

First off I'm using OpenSUSE 11.2. I'm trying to compile mediatomb and I'm having difficulty when I run './configure' This is the message I get when it fails:
Code:

I have a NAS (dlink-320) with a fully working fun_plug (http://wiki.dns323.info/) Linux system. However when I try to install x263 the configuration scripts says it need the math function log2f()But because fun_plug uses uClib instead of glibc and uClib have not yet implemented log2f() function I am trying to compile the glibc instead. I am only interested in the math part of glibc but have not found any documentation to just compile this part so it seems that I have to compile "most" of it. have gli I have copied glibc-ports-2.9/sysdeps/arm to glibc-2.11.2/sysdeps.and I enter
Code: ../configure --prefix=/ffp --libdir=/ffp/lib --includedir=/ffp/include --enable-shared --build=arm-linux but get the following error message
i tried to install wine in SLED11 but i got this error : configure: error: X development files not found. Wine will be built without X support, which probably isn't what you want. You will need to install development packages of Xlib/Xfree86 at the very least. Use the --without-x option if you really want this.
I try to install IPsec-Tools on Slackware 13, but I get an configure error: configure: error: Security Context requested, bu no selinux support! Aborting. I'm linux newbie and I'm following a slackware-basics tutorial, I did as in the tutorial, but the configure stops and aborts:

I'm running Slack 13.1 64 bit. I'd like to try running multi for 32 bit support so I can run a 32 bit version of firefox using the 32 bit flash plugin. Here's what I did: - followed Alien Bob's Wiki and download and installed all the *txz files. - installed a bunch of required libraries following the instructions on the Wiki - installed the 32 bit 10.1 version of the flash player plugin in $HOME/.mozilla/plugins/ - started the 32 bit 3.6.3 version of firefox; it seems to work fine. - go to about plugins and verify that Shockwave Flash (libflashplayer.so) is version 10.1 r53 and it is enabled. - run "ldd libflashplayer.so" and verified that all libraries are found. - run "ldd /usr/lib/firefox-3.6.3/firefox-bin" and verified all libraries are found. - go to [URL]... and click on "test your adobe flash player installation" I will get this error: Adobe Flash Player error: could not load cURL library - I verified (repeatedly) that I do have what I think is the correct package. How can I fix (or start debugging) this error?
I have a HP laptop which can support 1600x900. But after I install ubuntu 9.10 on it, it can only support up to 1280x700. My laptop has a Nvidia graphics card. And i am using GNOME as my desktop environment.
Trying to launch Second Life gives the following error message:
You are running the Second Life Viewer on a x86_64 platform. The most common problems when launching the Viewer (particularly 'bin/do-not-directly-run-secondlife-bin: not found' and 'error while loading shared libraries') may be solved by installing your Linux
This problem was easily found using search with solutions for Fedora 11.
The following information has been found for adding the 32 bit support to Fedora 11 but it does not work in Fedora 12.
The file created in the instructions below is a list of the 32 bit libraries. It is then called as input to yum to simply install them.
"Add the Libraries Next, add the 32-bit libraries by copying the following list, and pasting it into a text file. Save it as Fedora-ia32.txt."
Another post says that was all unnecessary as the following commands would do the same thing.
Could have simply been achieved by calling:$ yum install SDL.i586...(Or by selecting SDL.i586 in add/remove programs.)
The problem I have with Fedora 12 are neither of these will install anything in Fedora 12. Looking at add/remove programs does not yield anthing that looks like it is 32 bit support when searching with the argument "SDL".
Does anyone know how to install 32 bit support into Fedora 12 64 bit version ? I like the simple yum expression rather than long lists like the first example uses, but I'll try anything if it works.
A side question to this entire experiment is what chance would you give to Second Life being able to be run remotely using VNC? I would think if it runes on the Linux machine, using a remote terminal would have little impact. Using VNC isn't the usual way this will be run, I just wonder if it would work at all.
I am a newby in linux. i wanted to install lampp (xampp) but it gaves me an error that the operating system doesn't support 32 bit. I am using at this moment Fedora 12 x86_64.
I looked in another thread and they sad that i need to run yum whatprovides missing_lib_name but it don't show anything is there another way to get 32 bit support in linux because i really need xampp.
