I am a newby in linux. i wanted to install lampp (xampp) but it gaves me an error that the operating system doesn't support 32 bit. I am using at this moment Fedora 12 x86_64.
I looked in another thread and they sad that i need to run yum whatprovides missing_lib_name but it don't show anything is there another way to get 32 bit support in linux because i really need xampp.
i have a problem when i use test drive, it doesn't boot into the operating system. it just look like in dos when i login. what is wrong? shouldn't test drive let me see how its look when i use the live CD?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSeveral months ago I installed Suse on my box...setup a dual boot with Windows XP. By default it booted into Suse. The problem is that the company I work for, not a science company, is VERY windows-centric, so nearly everything I do is in windows. The IT people here periodically reboot the computers which creates a problem for me since I often work remotely and this results in my computer booting into Linux.

I'm trying to install 11.2 Gnome from the live cd on an HP n410c laptop. The install seems to go smoothly until I'm told I must reboot without the cd. I've tried three or four variations of the process and each time I see, "Error Loading Operating System."I've reloaded the live cd and examined /boot/grub/menu.lst. It appears to be correct. It seems like the initial GRub loader isn't found in the MBR.If I run grub-install, the graphical interface comes up then complains, "Because of partitioning, the boot loader cannot be installed properly."

I deleted the Windows partitions and created a new partition scheme: Swap, root and one additional partition on the first disk, one large partition on the second disk. Install runs fine but upon reboot I get "Error loading operating system". Booting off a Windows floppy and running FDisk shows that the root partition is marked as active.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 (clean install) on a 250G drive (partitioned to 107G for the system files). It was working fine, until I wanted to install Window$ for the use of Adobe stuff. I popped the Windows XP disc in, it loaded its files, then I tried to choose a partition for installation. There was an error saying that I can't do that, and needed to delete a partition blah blah. I thought it was too much trouble, so I quit and just wanted to use my 10.04. Booted, and it says "Error booting operating system" I WAS SHOCKED.
I tried to install grub (but don't need that right? I DO NOT want to dual boot now), but the usual method ( the sudo grub; root (hd0.0)...) doesn't work ,because something like "stage1" is missing. I tried many methods by still the same error. The reason I do not want a clean install is that I did many fixes on my 10.04 so that it would work with my EeePC 1001pxd, and I do not want to go through that again. I will be checking my email frequently on other computers if I have a chance.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a fancy new Quad Core Xeon machine here that I'm trying to install F10 x64 on. The installation went fine. When it reboots the first time, though, I get the dreaded Error Loading OS.
So I dug up my bookmark of the awesome Grub HOWTO here and followed the steps to install Grub manually. Alas, I get the same result after installing it. Even tried doing a makeactive (hd0) just in case, but no luck.
I did more searching and searched for "raid install" but didn't find anything helpful. So here I am... hoping somebody has some insight.
I have installed openSuSE 11.4 32-bit on my PC. Installation went okay, but when I shut down the system and started later it does not load.
My computers have;
- Intel Pentium Dual Core processors
- Asus motherboards
- Onboard VGA, Sound, NW
- 2 GB DDR2 RAM
- 80 GB SATA HDD

What happens is, the first screen appear (where it instructs to press DEL to go to BIOS), then the system hangs us displaying "Error Loading Operating System". There nothing works, except the CTRL+ALT+DEL. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL, same cycle repeats.
I want to install a new operating system (Fedora or Ubuntu), so I'm learning about them.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have installed Fedora 10 on a Dell M6400. It has 2 disks in a mirror raid. It came with Windows Vista, but I am not doing a dual boot setup. I have formattet the disk with this installation.I downloaded http://ftp.crc.dk/fedora/linux/relea...0-i386-DVD.iso, burned the DVD and did the install check. It passed the check.The installation went fine, but after the first reboot I am getting "Missing operating system".
I have no idea where to begin... Could the installation media be faulty after all? I there anyway to get passed this, without reinstalling? I know this may have something to do with the boot loader, but I don't know anything about it.I have installed Fedora 4,5,6,8,9 and this never happened to me before, but then again, I did all these installations on my old Dell Latitude.... Could this have something to do with the new hardware?
I am unable to Install Fedora10 in my system as one of the multiple operating systems and it gets hanged after probing for Hardware devices and so ...I get fedora trademark sought of symbol and even after waiting any amount of time it doesnt go further..neither the keyboard works nor the mouse pointer moves... Initially after booting with the media it doesnt even prompt me to press any key to boot from CD or Dvd or I get any screen to select the option for the mode of installation like text based installation or graphical installation..it hardly shows me this screen for even a fraction of second as well...

when I click on install fedora I am taken to the fedora splash screen and nothing goes ahead... I tried in rescue mode as well... In rescue mode it asks me for language selection...keyboard layout... later it doesnt go ahead as well... I have checked the installation media and it confirmed that the installation media is good... I use Redhat 4.1 version and It works fine except for the message drivers/usb/hid.c core message received at :75 while trying to restart shutdown or access a virtual console... Along with Redhat and while trying to install fedora I have windows server 2008,Windows vista on that harddisk...
Will a Linux operating system lose data during a power failure as does a Windows operating system?

I have a problem installing the oporating system, from a USB. I keep getting the error: Could not find Kernel: GFXboot. I have used a USB loader to put the ISO file on the flash drive as well as extracting the file using winrar. (separate occations) I have also tried both LIVE CD as well as the full DVD.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a dual boot windows XP/ubuntu 9.10 set up on one hard drive. Everything was working fine. The 9.10 install had been updated from 9.04. I recently had problems with the XP partition (XP basically collapsed) so I re-installed XP on the same partition it was on before. I then attempted to reinstall Ubuntu ( I decided I wanted a new 'clean' installation of Ubuntu as well). When I got to the partition function it refused to recognize that there is a Windows partition, or a previous ubuntu partition, but states 'No operating system installed' or similar, and offers the entire hard drive for installation. When I look at the partitions using Windows partition software the Windows and the ubuntu partitions are clearly in evidence. I have also tried to reinstall GRUB but it doesn't appear to exist.

How safe is it to use this installation option without partitioning and backup-ing my windows files? Does this option make an automatic partition? Is it possible to loose existing windows files? Currently I am using Windows Vista. I know that I can use WindowsInstaller, but I 'd like to avoid it.

I've done everything I could. Reinstall grub and I let it install fine and no errors, but does not booting, among the iso "boot-repair-disk-32bit.iso" and repair, all good, but not booting.
The system has a Raid 5 disks with one volume and two partitions, including a livecd ubuntu, and I see perfectly partitions have no problems, checked. I go with the "Super Grub Disk" (iso) and let me enter the system out there, but they do not enter the iso, not start me. All isos the'm putting on a flash memory to boot.
the thing that tends to draw out their frustrations the most are the error messages.
Things like "x.x not found, such and such can't continue" or "Unable to locate x.x", etc.
Well, of those people as I described above, a lot of them are fiercely independent people and would fix their own problems had they any idea what they were.
So, I had a thought that adding google or LQ.o search terms to the error messages, along with a link to the search feature, would be somewhat beneficial.
Perhaps with messages regarding missing files, then provide a link and message "To correct this issue, copy filename and submit it here -> url and download the package"
So I was wondering where I could find lots and lots of error message code.
I just purchased an Acer Aspire 5050, and was trying to install Ubuntu on it for my mother. (No, I am not forcing it on her, she actually asked for it.) I burned a CD and put it in the drive, and it said Operating System not found. So I went into the BIOS and told it to boot nothing but the optical drive. Same error. I burned another disk with the same computer, and then another computer. Same error. (Hereafter referred to as "nothing")
So I went and purchased a 4GB flash drive from micro center. Converted my iso to img and DDed from my Mac, then set the BIOS to boot it. The BIOS recognizes the disk, but won't boot from it, giving the same error. So I thought: Fine, I guess I can't get _nix to boot, how about Windows 7? Put the disk in that I used to install on my laptop, genuine Windows 7 disk, nothing. I tried the Vista disk that came with the computer, also nothing.
Any ideas on how to install ANY operating system on this machine? I get absolutely no POST errors. I turned off Quiet Boot and looked, no errors there either. I would be fine installing any _nix based, it doesn't have to be an easy install. I can provide more information as needed, not a problem. I can't think of any more useful information at the moment.
I've just installed 10.4 and it works like a charm. The only problem I have is that I've plugged my ipod touch 3g in and nothing happens. It seems like the system doesn't detect it. Opening rhythmbox nothing happens either.
Do i need to do any extra thing in order to have my ipod working?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI would love to be able to use TrueCrypt consistently across all my machines, be they Windows or Linux. As it stands, I can do full-disk encryption with pre-boot authentication only on Windows.
I don't really understand why this is. Are there technical challenges specific to Linux/Mac that make full disk encryption harder? Does anyone know whether TrueCrypt will support this in the near future.
PS. yes, I'm aware that there are other options. My goal is to simplify my life here and use the one tool across all machines.

Just did this with the Debian 6.0 Net install .iso: 4.3.1. Preparing a USB stick using a hybrid CD or DVD image. Debian CD and DVD images can now be written directly a USB stick, which is a very easy way to make a bootable USB stick. Simply choose a CD or DVD image that will fit on your USB stick. See Section 4.1,Official Debian GNU/Linux CD-ROM Sets to get a CD or DVD image.
Alternatively, for very small USB sticks, only a few megabytes in size, you can download the mini.iso image from the netboot directory (at the location mentioned in Section 4.2.1,Where to Find Installation Image).The CD or DVD image you choose should be written directly to the USB stick, overwriting its current contents.
Windows XP is installed in my C drive. Can I install an another fresh copy of Windows XP or Linux or Windows 7 in same C drive without formatting the previous one?
