OpenSUSE :: Installation Source Unusable - Trying To Create VM
Jul 20, 2009
I am running openSUSE 11.1. I installed the Hypervisor and tools and booted into: 2.6.27.23-0.1-xen. I'm trying to install Ubuntu LTS 8.04.3 as a guest using the "Create a Virtual Machine" GUI/wizard. I specify "other" since no Debian-based distro is offered under "Type of Operating System". Under "Installation Source" for "Operating System Installation" I Add a Virtual Disk of "phy:/dev/sr0" using protocol "phy". It can obviously read the drive since it recognizes that it is 0.6 GB (the media contains a burned & bootable (from ISO) DVD - the files are extracted).
However, when I proceed I am thrown an Error:
"The installation source is unusable." with Details:
"0.6 GB CD-ROM or DVD (phy:/dev/sr0)"
Am I supposed to do something different?

Im running a dell studio xps 16 computer with windows 7. Im now trying to install a dual boot with ubuntu. My problem is that ubuntu refuses to create a new partition, claiming that i already have 4 main partitions. According to any partitionprogram run in windows I only got 3. It looks likt this in Gparted (from live cd):
dev/sda1 | fat16 | system reserved | size: 40 MiB
dev/sda2 | ntfs | size: 797.5 KiB
dev/sda3 | ntsf | size: 100 MiB
dev/sda4 | ntsf | 87.56 GiB
The 40 mb partition is probably for some dell recovery stuff. The 100 mb partition is some windows 7 backup, it is also flagged as "boot".. The 87 gb partition is my main windows 7 disk. I have no clue what the 797.5 KiB is for. It dosnt show up anywhere when looking at partitions in windows. I also tried deleting it from ubuntu (live cd) and then booting windows again, and when I booted ubuntu again it was there even tho i deleted it last time. What the hell is this? Can I just delete it and move on with installing ubuntu? Or should I instead delete the fat16 system reserved partition?

When I boot the ubuntu live cd (9.10) and attempt to install it only gives two options at the partitioning screen. One is to use the whole disk and the other is to manualy assign partitions. I told it to resize one of my partitions and created 18GB of free space. However, it tells me this space is "unusable". It wouldn't let me do anything with it and I used windows vista disk manager to add it back to the original partition. I have one hard drive with four partitions. One is a restore partition, one windows partition, one storage partition, and one that says xp although i don't have xp installed. It might be used by the acer restore program. It's an acer aspire 6920.

I have a project and would like to create a .deb package that brought on any computer with debian distribution installs it in your home user who is installing.I followed a guide and managed to create a deb package from my sources with FPM. But creates them with root permissions and tells me that I should create a script before installation to change the permissions.

I recently bought a second monitor and I had this set up perfectly fine with two panels on my primary display and one on my secondary. I've now gone away for the weekend (leaving the monitor) and I went to turn on my laptop and it didn't work.
When I login to a gnome session (or indeed a failsafe gnome session) I just got two horizontal white bars (where the panels would be). I switch to a terminal, login and run top and see that gnome-panel is on 100%. Running 'killall gnome-panel' does nothing (tried a few times).
I've had to install xfce4 just to type this message. Is there any way I can 'reset' gnome-panel or any other fix? Or even a workaround would be nice. I'm on 9.10 by the way. I am going to upgrade at some point but its not really an option yet.

I recently bought a 12-cell (extended-life) battery for my HP dv8000 AMD Turion64 laptop. While the extra battery life is spectacular, the machine is virtually unusable when not plugged in. Either the hardware or the OS (I'm not sure which) seems to view each of the 12 cells as a separate battery, so whenever a cell nears depletion and the machine prepares to transition to the next cell, the computer slows to a standstill, as though it were shifting into an extreme version of Powersave mode. This can last for several minutes at a time, during which period all I can do is stare helplessly at my screen.
I have all but disabled Powersave features in the Power Management applet, setting the laptop to Performance mode on both AC and battery power, with Powersave only kicking in below 10%. So that isn't the source of the problem. I have also disabled Compositing and all desktop effects, except the mouse pointer application-icon animations that appear when I open an application, which I can't figure out how to disable. All this to no avail.
Plug the machine back in and it zips along at a merry Linux pace. I don't want to keep it plugged in all the time, though, because a) this is a laptop and therefore should be mobile; and b) keeping a charged battery plugged in drastically shortens its battery life. Besides, this is a brand-new battery; it should still be working fine.

I have a problem after running zypper up. Apparantly somehow it upgraded to current factory release.. Problems so farNo networkNo x - session(after a quick hack i have x started but no input devices work)I think there is something wrong with udev and my xorg.confx first complained about InputDevice not being recognised.. I moved away my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and got a quick running session (without input devices, so icannot log on) but after a reboot it gives me a "black" screenWhile troubleshooting is encountered the problem that my network card is not recognised.. This all points in the direction of udev or whatever to be badly configured during upgrade..

Running 3.3.2 of LibreOffice under 64bit 11.3. When I open a document (.doc) it opens right away, then the cpu spikes for about 8 seconds during which the app is not usable then all is fine. Renamed .libreoffice and made no difference. Tried with both .doc and .odf document types and the same. If I open a empty doc then the spike is a second or 2.

After doing the standard sequence to go from 10.4 to 10.10 beta, the system is now unusable. There are no icons and no thees. The GDM login shows a big question mark where a graphics would normally be.When I log into the session, I get nothing: no desktop, no panels. Alt+F2 does nothing, so I can't even launch a terminal that way. After starting a terminal from a virtual console, I can start looking at what's wrong. Metacity crashes right awaywith:metacity:ERROR:ui/ui.c:752:meta_ui_get_default_window_icon: assertion failed: (default_icon)Aborted (core dumped)

i've tried both the gnome and kde installers and initially it boots fine to the first menu, but if i then select 'installation' or even try to boot to the live cd, the screen goes blank and then reappears as something that looks like the static on your television if you're trying to tune it in. if you let it continue to boot, then it goes blank again and comes back with a different corrupted screen, but this time you have a white block in the middle that is apparently the mouse point as i can then move it around.
i've tried it in VESA mode and even text mode and the same thing happens. the installation media checks out fine, and my graphics card is brand new - a Radeon 3650 HD. I might try an older version of suse and try and upgrade from there

Screen flicker Ubuntu 10.10
After installing Ubuntu (Version 10.10 DVD amd 64Ubuntu 10.10 live DVD).
On the following hardware
Gigabyte GA-K8VT800-RH motherboard
3GB ram
AMD Sempron 3400 cpu.
ATI Radeon X1600 Pro Video card. 256M ddr2 AGP VGA/TV0/DV1-1
p/no 882c85-03
The screen resolution looked very good with all screen resolutions working well The colours and fonts very clear. All other device drivers worked 100%. But unfortunately the display flashes about every 10 seconds and the partial beak up of the display only lasts a fraction of a second and very distracting and is unusable. Testing with Ubuntu 10.10 live DVD. With this months Linux Format Magazine also exhibits this problem. However deleting the partition and installing Ubuntu 10.04 Beta1 DVD -386. And all updates downloaded. Works 100% with no screen flicker.

Right now to install software from source I do a ./configure && make && make install which doesn't allow for easy uninstallation (some don't come with an 'uninstall' goal, and if they do you have to keep the source around). I'd like to learn how to create binary RPMs from source tar.gz files (one reason being that it makes for easier uninstallation). I tried the following but it complains with the following errors:
Code:
$ rpmbuild -ta mysource.tar.gz
error: Name field must be present in package: (main package)
error: Version field must be present in package: (main package)
error: Release field must be present in package: (main package)
error: Summary field must be present in package: (main package)
error: Group field must be present in package: (main package)
error: License field must be present in package: (main package)
Apparently that's what happens when there is no SPEC file in the tarball. But all the tars I've tried give this same error. Is there a simple way to create binary RPMs from source files - as an example, this source tar [URL].

I just bought a new HP desktop, and I want to install Debian on the hard drive. I ran the Windows program on the Debian CD to start the install.
I selected Manual drive setting, and resized the large C: partition to 50 GB. I want to install Debian in some of the free space, only their isn''t any free space! The 400+ GB I took out of the C: partition is labeled "unusable" instead of "free space."
If I double click the unusable space, I am just given the cylinder/head/sector numbers. How I can make that space usable?
I would boot my Gparted CD, but I don't know how to get to the BIOS. The boot screen goes right to Windows without showing me the key to get to the BIOS. I tried hitting DEL, but to no effect. Do you know what the HP computers use to interrupt the boot?

I have Kubuntu 10.10 64-bit, which was running fine until I did a bunch of apt-get software installs to permit me to compile YaWP weather plasmoid. In the process I am now at KDE 4.6.2, and my system is now non-functional, not able to start KDE desktop.
When KDE starts I get continuous krunner segfaults, krunner is taking 100% of the CPU, the desktop is there but the system is unusable. /var/log/messages is filled with the krunner segfaults, each line further indicating "error 4 in libkio.so.5.6.0". I tried reinstalling kubuntu-desktop, problem remains.
I expect I have created some software incompatibility with my installs, but I do not know how to diagnose/resolve.

I know that Linux is open source but there must be ways of creating non-open source programs to be run on a Linux system? Does such a thing exist and/or have a name? Would any source code that has been compiled be unable to be read by anyone properly unless the soruce code was released?

I'm asked to create a network tool in C and a GUI API in linux platform by my company. I'm aware of the GPL & GLPL licenses , but not clear whether I can create a proprietary commercial software with the tools & libraries available in Linux: My tool will be written in C and will be using the some network library functions in the Linux and some header files .(Their license is GPL) , also the GUI i'm planning to develop is using GTK and Glade / Anjuta, (GTK is based on GLPL license) , I will be using GCC compiler for C programs,
Please let me know whether it is possible to create a closed source-commercial software using the above tools/libraries, if not possible is there any workaround is there for creating commerical tools in linux Can I make some part of my code closed and some parts open? Also please let me know which is the best GUI building programming language/IDE that can be used with C programs in linux

First of all here's my PC configuration
Proc Core2Duo 6750
MB MSI P35 Neo 2
RAM Corsair 4GB
Video Gigabyte GTS250
HDD 2x320GB Seagate in RAID 0 and 1GB WD
I have a Windows 7 installation with a boot partition on the RAID. I also want to have a dual boot with openSUSE 11.2 but I don't know how to set correctly my partitions. I have some unallocated space next to the Windows C: partition. When I try to install openSUSE it makes a suggestion to create some partitions that i don't need and don't want, and even doesn't mount them. It also creates a / 80GB, /boot 36MB, swap 2GB and /home 20GB partitions, so I am in lack of free space.
I don't know how to create screenshots during installation. Maybe I'll try to reinstall later and pick some screens in english, because my system language is bulgarian.

i'm trying to create a database with the mysql that came with the suse installation, my problem is that i can't get mysqladmin to work it spits out this: connect to server at 'localhost' failed error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)' Check that mysqld is running and that the socket: '/var/run/mysql/mysql.sock' exists! So I'm stuck at square one php info() seems ok with the installation and the installed client connects to my remote DB ok. I checked the server with ps -ef | grep mysqld and I get the following:
2438 2436 0 15:47 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/mysqld --defaults-file=/home/ben/.local/share/akonadi//mysql.conf --datadir=/home/ben/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ --socket=/home/ben/.local/share/akonadi/socket-linux-ygk7.site/mysql.socket root 6248 6151 0 16:01 pts/0 00:00:00 grep mysqld
Which doesn't really mean a lot to me but looks ok, anyway my question boils down to does anyone have any obvious ideas of what I'm doing wrong or is, as others have hinted, suse's mysql installation is broken?

I used Windows Disk Manager to shrink the space Windows is in so I can install Ubuntu in that space. When I start the partitioner it says the free space is unusable. I ran Gparted and sure enough, there are already 4 primary partitions on my drive:
/dev/sda1 = ntfs - SYSTEM
/dev/sda2 = ntfs
