This was a problem I had on Arch linux and the fix was to change the locking options in the soffice script but I've tried that fix here and it doesn't work. I've seen a lot of discussions but they all go back to changing the locking options in soffice, has anyone got any alternative fixes or one that definitely works with locking?

Sometimes, power point presentations will crash the program and then I can't open any open office programs without rebooting the computer. Jul 8, 2011Okay so I have a file that I always save and close properly and get in my Ubuntu One folder for backup that will not open. Its called "Income.ods" and is quite important and I cannot seem to recover it. When I double click it, it shows the Libre Office Calc splash screen shows up then goes away and the nothing, no error messages, no nothing. I tried to open it on my Windows Vista machine and it said it was corrupted and could not open in Office Word. I tried a few recovery tools but to no avail.

I've tried running this multiple times, both with using glib_close() at the end of the loop, using glib_init() and glib_close() at beginning/end, and just using glib_init(). The strange thing is these have no effect on the actual glib_get functions.

(only after it asked if i wanted to recover the document, which i just did since it was asking me...) Now the document, which was very important, is a scrambled bunch of random characters! I cannot find the correct character set. Why is it prompting me for which character encoding I am using in the first place?

Mar 28, 2011I just found out about Libre Office. I am currently using Open Office on my Netbook (ubuntu 10.10), and NeoOffice on my Macbook (OS/X 10.6.7).
QUESTION: I have some backups using these formats: .sdw, and .odt. Can Libre Office read documents saved in these (StarOffice / Open Office) formats?
FWIW: I would have preferred to use OO on both machines, but unfortunately OO never fixed a problem with printing envelopes in the Macintosh version. Hence my use of NeoOffice.

Native being if I double clock on a .doc file it will start up LO's Write program instead of OO.Will just removing OO achieve this or is there an easier way? I remove the applications which i don't use from main-menu. Now i can not see them from "open with" menu when i right click to a file.
Also it will be very nice if Ubuntu can show me on the "open with" menu the possibilities of applications which can open properly the file type which i want to open. I try to configure with ubuntu-tweak's "file type manager" but it is not possible to configure all of file types. I think Ubuntu's applications must to know which applications has to show for which file types. And i don't know how to do that. I need an application like this : url
I get a new user from the same OS, and i see that the same problem still there... For example many many compressed files, audio or graphic files are not associated with vlc or gimp.
I try to configure from system files of gnome but it is very complicated.
Fedora :: Can't Run Open Office
Sep 13, 2009I can't get open office to run. I believe I need jre1.60 to run this. I have jdk installed since I need this for java programming. Can I also install jre1.60 and use jdk as well? I am taking a class in Java programming so I don't want to screw up my programming environment. However, I need to use OO powerpoint for class as well.

Mar 16, 2010On tis end I have a HP G71 laptop and Slackware v13 ...For whatever insane reason Slackware v13 does NOT come with Open Office and the user has to install the program on their own. With that said, I've gone the following route, several times and with zero success ... so you tell me:
.1. <usr> d/l the applicable Open Office files
.2. <usr> unpack the files by way of tar -xvp and end up with *.rpm files
.3. <usr> Switch to the RPM directory and use rpm2tgz to convert the *.rpm files to *.tgz files.
.4. <usr> to <root> su -c installpkg ooo*.tgz and do the same with openoffice*.tgz. All seems to go well here.
.5. <root> switch to desktop directory and remove Debian, Suse and Mandriva files.
.6. <root> convert Slackware file to *.tgz
.7. <root> installpkg openoffice
Using the above noted steps all seems to go well, until after re-booting and starting up "x" as either ROOT or as a USER ... nothing! The "x" window displays show the Open Office files to be there but clicking on them, all I get is a bouncing cursor for a few seconds - then nothing!

OK, solved it; for anyone else having trouble, I completely removed ttf-mscorefonts-installer package then reinstalled it; upon reinstallation I got a EULA to accept and everything went as expected.
