I'm currently using Fedora 15 Beta on my laptop and I always use YUM to update my OS every week. I have a question that when official release of Fedora 15 will be available, should I reinstall that stable version on my laptop? Does YUM application automatically update the latest packages for my OS?

I have seen several threads and posts that still reflect pondering the Ubuntu 10.10 name. Just so you know, the name is official: Maverick Meerkat. Try to brainstorm names for 11.04 onward, please.

Shortly after upgrading to Meerkat I discovered that my macbook timemachine backups became unreliable to the point of uselessness. After a bit of googling it appears that Meerkat's version of Netatalk (2.1.2) has some issues that bust timemachine. These issues are supposedly fixed in version 2.1.3. So... what is the best way for me to go about upgrading Netatalk past the official Meerkat release version?
The Netatalk project is at version 2.1.5. I could uninstall the Meerkat packages and just try to build Netatalk directly from source. However I'm a little leary about losing all of my existing AFPD filesystem meta-data. The Natty Narwhal repository appears to have version 2.1.4 which I've read should solve my problem. Is there any way to install the binaries from the Natty repositories? Can I download the source package from the Natty repositories and rebuild the package with Meerkat libraries/dependencies?

I've recently ran the Updater Applet to install any pertinent official openSUSE updates, but I got 2-3 (they vanished before I could click on them) popups on the bottom right of my screen saying that an update had failed. Additionally, I found the following message in the Updater's lower panel:
Code:
This update fixes an issue caused by a previous
yast2-ncurses update, which would leave some ncurses
(textmode) yast2 tools crashing.
- #569000: yast2-ncurses-2.18.11-0.1.1: crash of yast -i

I saw a reference to a way to do this while searching for help with something else but don't remember where it was now. I know it is possible to make a local repository but that seems more for someone with a home network composed entirely of Fedora machines than what I'm looking for.In Ubuntu I could just copy the contents of the /var/cache/apt/archives directory and paste the debs into the new installation to be installed once the update manager saw that there were updates. I looked through the contents of the /var/cache/yum directory but I didn't see anything that looked like it would allow me to do this in Fedora. All I want is a way to download whatever updates I need (and there are 300mbs of updates from a fresh install) one time to allow me to catchup and now be waiting hours on my slow 700k connection to download everything.
Could someone point me to an easy to follow HOWTO that would walk me through creating a service pack of the basic default applications for Fedora 13 that will need to be installed or updated on any system?

I was following the link below on my Acer trying to get my FN brightness adjust keys to actually work, instead of just showing the dialog. [url].... After following the steps and restarting, i can hear ubuntu start and the login screen appear, but i cannot see anything. Brightness keys do not work. So i hold my left shift to get the boot menu. Neither the primary boot or it's recovery method work (Kernel 2.6.35-28-generic). However if i choose 2.6.35-27-generic it boots right up like nothing is wrong. So how do i get my primary kernel working right again?

I've been running Maverick 64bit fine on my Dell M1330 laptop until a couple of days ago. After the latest updates (I guess to kernel 2.6.35-24-generic), sound stopped working properly. The sound indicator applet tells me that the sound system is not responding. The login sound doesn't play anymore.
On the other hand Rhythmbox plays and I can hear the music. I can adjust Rhythmbox volume but not the global volume (as neither the sound indicator applet nor the multimedia volume keys on my laptop work).
Code:
$alsamixer
it works flawless. Here is what I get if I try to run pulseaudio from the terminal
Code:
$ pulseaudio

E: module.c: Failed to load module "module-ladspa-sink" (argument: "sink_name=ladspa_output.mbeq_1197.mbeq

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.
Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

I just learned that warsow 0.6 is out, and went to see if it was available in the ubuntu software center yet, as opposed to going and downloading and installing it manually from the warsow website. The ubuntu repo's still have version 0.5, and at the bottom of the page it says:
"Updates: Canonical does not provide updates for Warsow. Some updates may be provided by the Ubuntu community."
So if I wanted to 'update' this item in the repo's for the better of the community what would that entail?

There are some updates in the Update Manager list which I do not install. Among them, some drivers for HP Printers (I don't know why this cropped up; I don't even use printers on my laptop), and gcj updates (I use gcc/g++ but not gcj). I unchecked them the first time I saw them on my UM list. However, for every subsequent batch of new updates, UM retains these updates and I need to uncheck them every time. How can I remove them totally from my UM list?

So I am a bit puzzled. After upgrading to 10.04, I seem to have lost my official Sun Java and plugins for Firefox/Opera. I wouldn't care normally about having the official Sun Java instead of IcedTea plugin and Open Java which is now installed, except that my university doesn't support anything for our Student Information System except for official Sun Java.
My question is this: Is there a way to install Sun Java back onto my machine instead of the "new" OpenJava?

How much time does it take (typically) for Canonical to release an updated version of the Ubuntu kernel? What I mean is that the 2.6.34 kernel is already out (on kernel.org), but we're still on 2.6.32.

I have had no issues with Ubuntu 10.10, but after installing ubuntu 11.04 my sounds stopped working.
My computer is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5 CPU 3.20 GHz with a ASUS P7P55D Motherboard (integrated sound-card in the motherboard) 4 Gigs of RAM and a NVIDIA GTS 250 (1G RAM) Videocard
Never had any issues with it, but this version of Ubuntu my sounds have stopped working. Any ideas on how to fix this? I checked my sound menu and it does list my soundcard as "Internal Audio" 1 Output/ 1 Input Analog Stereo Duplex. Output volume is at 100% and not muted.

So, it is my understanding that Ubuntu's automatic updates do not install ANY updates that are not "important security updates." For example, it did not upgrade me to Firefox 4 automatically; I had to do it myself (Don't all new browser versions usually contain new security features/patches? Oh well...That is a separate question entirely).
ANYWAY, is there some way to get the latest stable versions of all of my open-source software automatically (or at least all at once, on command), instead of just security updates? It seems silly to have to install new versions for every program manually.
Also, related/side question: Now that I have installed Firefox 4 myself (via apt-get by adding the mozilla-stable PPA), will I stop getting security updates for Firefox through the standard Ubuntu update manager?
Actually, a really thorough explanation of the whole automatic update system (or a link to one) would be great too.

Now that 13.1 is available I am thinking about getting the official CD in the hope that from time to time I can use their support team. Do you think it's worth it. Naturally I would like to also support the team for their efforts. Would they support me on occasions I cannot get it here? Mostly support to do with available software packages, gnome, etc.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. I'd like to use the latest kernel from repositories (at the present moment it's 2.6.35-23), that's why I've installed backports.
These are packages:linux-image-generic-lts-backport-maverick linux-headers-generic-lts-backport-maverick
But DKMS failed to build modules for fglrx: I think it's caused by old version of fglrx.
