Ubuntu :: Nvidia-xsettings Killed Xserver?

May 30, 2011

i tried to get some glx support to my X11/xfce4 so i read some threads and i just wanted to try out nvidia-settings to check out how far i've come. it told me to run nvidia-xconfig (which i did) afterwards X refused to start at all, so i copied back the old xorg.conf.i know that X has changed a year ago or so and xorg.conf isnt really of any use (so that file is "like" empty, just three lines or so).whatever, now i cannot login to my old xfce4 environment, i get the loginbox and type in password, after 2 secs i get a black screen with some errors (blinks away after half a sec) a black screen with a cursor and then get back to the login screen.

Ubuntu :: Killed Xserver / Gnome - Cursor Stays At The Left When 2 Monitors Connected

Mar 5, 2011

i somehow screwed my xserver (I guess it is the xserver). I got the following problem:

1) When i have 2 monitors connected, the cursor stays at the left one even though i select text on the right one.

2)(i plugged the left one out)As soon as i open a window and click on something in the window the window cannot be moved anymore, and the desktop cannot be selected anymore either (though u still can do something inside the window), as soon as you close the window (if you are lucky and there is a "close" button) the desktop can be used again.

This all started when i played a flash game which froze like everything but the game, and i had to restart the computer. I guess it somehow screwed the .conf file or the xserver. I already tried the xorg.conf.backup but it didn't help!

Ubuntu :: Xserver With Nvidia Doesn't Work 10.04

Nov 13, 2010

It does this all the time whenever I reboot and I hadn't rebooted my PC in months simply because it's a GOD DAMN pain to figure this crap out. I need a REAL fix.

My computer turns off and boots, it goes directly into Recovery Menu. It refuses to boot normally. I load low graphics mode, it doesn't even let me make changes to the configuration file, OR let me have ONE session in low graphics mode. I've tried reconfiguring xserver, re-installing nvidia drivers, STILL the same effing garbage. It's starting to **** me off. I'm mostly a Linux noob, and I hate trying all these "tips" that don't work to make my stupid display work. I use gnome. Any advice, tips whatever to make this work? If you need something, I'll try my best to get it but I'm on my other computer right now so displaying my configuration files will be a pain. :/ Before I installed vesa, low graphics mode wouldn't work because it said the vesa module didn't exist and it also said no screens.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Switch The Primary Within NVidia's Xserver App?

Jul 4, 2010

Currently Monitor 0 is the TV (S-video). I want it to be my Monitor. My attempts to change this are failing Seams I'm just tripping over some little thing:

Unbuntu 10.04
Graphics - NVidia 7600
Displays - 2
- Samsung LCD (DVI)
- TV (S-Video)

I do not see how to switch the primary within NVidia's xserver app. Background Info: In order to get the TV out working, I disconnected the Monitor and booted the system - The TV-out then worked for the first time. Reconnected the monitor and rebooted again - both worked..but TV is Monitor0. All other options failed me when I set this up the first time

Current xorg.conf

Software :: NVIDIA XServer Driver Crashes ?

Dec 14, 2010

I'm running ubuntu 10.10 I have a Samsung Syncmaster 205BW Monitor and I needed a graphic accelerator to run my science software and to view full screen videos. so I installed the NVIDIA 96.43.19 Driver as recomanded by unbuntu. Well the server installs OK but doesn't completely communicate with my monitor, I'm using GeForce4 MX 440 with AGP8X/AGP/SSE2 Graphic card. I'm unable to set the correct Resolution which is 1680X1050, the driver only list 1280X1024 and doesn't list the correct one. Also the driver Crashes when I try to set the CPU scaling, it's locked on stretch mode. Also when ubuntu loads X it doesn't accept the Xserver settings I have entered in the driver Set Up.The additional driver screen also says the Driver is active but not in use. I sent a bug report to NVIDIA but they never answered me back.

Debian Hardware :: Recent Updates Have Killed X (NVidia)

Jun 24, 2011

I am running sid. A few days ago I ran an update which killed 3D. I followed this thread to get 3D support back. However I failed to hold those packages so I suspect a subsequent upgrade undid all that work. Now what is happening is that I do not have X starting at all. These are the relevant nvidia, mesa and xserver files installed

ii libgl1-nvidia-alternatives-ia32 270.41.19-1
simplifies replacing MESA libGL with GPU vendor libraries (32-bit)
ii libgl1-nvidia-glx-ia32 270.41.19-1
NVIDIA binary OpenGL 32-bit libraries
ii libglx-nvidia-alternatives 270.41.19-1
simplifies replacing Xorg module libglx.so with GPU vendor library
ii nvidia-installer-cleanup 20110515+1
Cleanup after driver installation with the nvidia-installer .....

Yet when I run lsmod I get:
nvidia 10710970 0
i2c_core 25601 14 adt7475,nvidia,tuner_simple,tda9887,tda8290,tea5767,tuner,cx8800,cx88xx,i2c_algo_bit,tveeprom,v4l2_common,videodev,i2c_i801

I am missing something obvious in all of this.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVIDIA XServer Settings - Black Screen Of Death

Dec 11, 2010

I had Ubuntu 10.04 running fine. Then I got curious about NVIDIA XServer.

"ATI Technologies Inc RV380 [Radeon X600 (PCIE)]" - Video Card

I opened it up, clicked a settings change, and said OK.
It said you need to update your blah blah blah.
Then it said blah blah blah doesn't exist.
Then it said it would create it for me.
Then I said REBOOT!

Now I get a black screen of death.

The only way I can get anything to happen on my monitor that comes from this computer is to boot into the Install Disk and say "TRY UBUNTU".

Ubuntu Multimedia :: New Install Killed Dual Monitors - Nvidia Setup Not Working ?

Sep 14, 2010

I've just installed 10.04 on an old system.

Hardware is:

- NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT video card
- Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R motherboard with 3 gig ram, few TB of hard-drive
- dual monitors, both viewsonic vx2235wm, primary on analog, secondary on digital (but whatever, happy to reverse the order)

On the old setup (8.04) the monitors were set up as twinview, 1680x1050 each, no problems. On the new setup (10.04) my old xorg.conf (see below) doesn't work and nvidia xserver settings refuses to detect my second (digital) monitor at any resolution greater than 640x480.

I've tried messing with xorg.conf to no avail and google doesn't appear to be my friend.

Here's the old xorg.conf file that worked in 8.04 but refuses to even boot under 10.04:

Debian Multimedia :: Nvidia Legacy 96 - Starting Gdm - Xserver Fails

May 26, 2011

I recently installed the Nvidia proprietary drivers and I have a problem starting gdm. Xserver fails, only throwing a warning concerned to xkbcomp, something about ralt having two symbols... but just a warning anyway. Then, after waiting the screen flash between the tty and a black screen a few times;

i'm on the tty, from where I can "startx" without problem. I tried using the nv driver and gdm worked.. so i think it has relation with the nvidia drivers... If I start gdm from the tty, instead of using the startx command, then gdm appears but if I try to log in.. all freezes up.. Here's my xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig: [URL]

Ubuntu :: Gdm-2.20 Package Killed Display?

Feb 3, 2010

I wanted to change the look of my login screen, so I installed gdm-2.20 thru the terminal (apt-get install) and then it asked me what I wanted the default set as and gave me 2 choices:

gdm
gdm-2.20

I picked the latter. Then I restarted the compy and... text. It keeps telling me that the X server is... not configured correctly and that I need to restart GDM when it is. So, I need to know if there is any way of rewriting the xorg.conf to work with my poc (piece of crap) video card. I have a backup of the default xorg.conf for use with NO video card... but then I wouldn't be able to use my video card...

Ubuntu :: Updates Killed GRUB?

Aug 9, 2010

I've been a Windows users since waaaay back when (ahh...Windows for Workgroups 3.1). I've tried Linux in the past (Mandrake many years ago), but didn't feel it was quite ready to be a Windows substitute for me.A couple of weeks ago, I downloaded the latest version of Ubuntu (10.04) and installed it in a dual boot setup with Windows XPSP3. All seemed to be running well, until it came time to install updates in the Update Manager. First an update for GRUB, which promptly killed GRUB and left me with "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported" message and a GRUB prompt. After booting up the Windows XP install CD, I was able to rewrite the MBR and get back into Windows.

I deleted the Ubuntu installation and reinstalled it, making sure I didn't allow it to update GRUB after finishing up. The other updates listed installed fine and I was able to dual boot with ease.Another round of updates were listed yesterday when I booted up in Ubuntu, I made sure not to include the GRUB update, downloaded and installed them, rebooted and was faced with "Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported" again. Argh. Once again I had to pull out the Windows CD and run FIXMBR to resolve the boot problem.I'll admit to being tempted to just go back to Windows completely (while not perfect, atleast I can get it to boot after updates 99.9% of the time) and forget the idea of running Linux if I'm going to be faced with having to reinstall the OS everytime because something killed the boot loader.

Ubuntu :: What Is Kslowd001 Process / Why Cannot Be Killed

Oct 19, 2010

In Ubuntu 10.10 on a REALLY old laptop, everything works fine - except the system occasionally gets a lag spike, where the CPU is suddenly being throttled. This wouldn't be a problem, except my mother's using the laptop to play backing music for her choir and the CPU spikes are causing the music to stutter. After much searching and eventually resorting to TOP, I found that the CPU was being throttled every 10-20 seconds or so by a process called, "kslowd001". "sudo kill -9 `pidof kslowd001`" did nothing, nor did, "sudo killall -9 kslowd001". It doesn't want to die, it just wants to throttle the CPU, and I just want it to stop. What does this process actually do? Why can't I kill it? How do I switch it off, or otherwise stop it from throttling the CPU every couple of seconds so that we can actually listen to music or watch videos from the laptop?
