Ubuntu :: Killed Xserver / Gnome - Cursor Stays At The Left When 2 Monitors Connected

Mar 5, 2011

i somehow screwed my xserver (I guess it is the xserver). I got the following problem:

1) When i have 2 monitors connected, the cursor stays at the left one even though i select text on the right one.

2)(i plugged the left one out)As soon as i open a window and click on something in the window the window cannot be moved anymore, and the desktop cannot be selected anymore either (though u still can do something inside the window), as soon as you close the window (if you are lucky and there is a "close" button) the desktop can be used again.

This all started when i played a flash game which froze like everything but the game, and i had to restart the computer. I guess it somehow screwed the .conf file or the xserver. I already tried the xorg.conf.backup but it didn't help!

Ubuntu :: Nvidia-xsettings Killed Xserver?

May 30, 2011

i tried to get some glx support to my X11/xfce4 so i read some threads and i just wanted to try out nvidia-settings to check out how far i've come. it told me to run nvidia-xconfig (which i did) afterwards X refused to start at all, so i copied back the old xorg.conf.i know that X has changed a year ago or so and xorg.conf isnt really of any use (so that file is "like" empty, just three lines or so).whatever, now i cannot login to my old xfce4 environment, i get the loginbox and type in password, after 2 secs i get a black screen with some errors (blinks away after half a sec) a black screen with a cursor and then get back to the login screen.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dual Monitor - Same Image On Both Monitors Stays Checked ?

Feb 15, 2011

I have a problem finding the resolution that will fit my secondary monitor(24). If I check "Same image in all monitors" I can only choose resolutions that laptop can display. I don't want laptop monitor to work when I'm using secondary monitor(I close the lid)...

If I want to uncheck "Same image in all monitors"(just to find the right resolution)...the system tells me to log out and back in again. When I do that, there's the same image on both monitors and the checkbox was automatically checked again...

I have an Asus N71J Series laptop. Video card: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5730 1GB

Ubuntu Multimedia :: New Install Killed Dual Monitors - Nvidia Setup Not Working ?

Sep 14, 2010

I've just installed 10.04 on an old system.

Hardware is:

- NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT video card
- Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R motherboard with 3 gig ram, few TB of hard-drive
- dual monitors, both viewsonic vx2235wm, primary on analog, secondary on digital (but whatever, happy to reverse the order)

On the old setup (8.04) the monitors were set up as twinview, 1680x1050 each, no problems. On the new setup (10.04) my old xorg.conf (see below) doesn't work and nvidia xserver settings refuses to detect my second (digital) monitor at any resolution greater than 640x480.

I've tried messing with xorg.conf to no avail and google doesn't appear to be my friend.

Here's the old xorg.conf file that worked in 8.04 but refuses to even boot under 10.04:

Debian Multimedia :: Second Xserver Has No Connected Output With Radeon DIS

Mar 26, 2016

My notebook thinkpad w500 has two video cards, intel / radeon. When i test some 3d games by wine or some videos by mpv using dri_prime=1 to dynamic enable radeon card, the game/video window always tearing, see bug report [URL] ....

So I try to start second xserver directly use radeon card, command like this:

$xinit /usr/bin/openbox-session -- :1 -ac -configdir radeon (/etc/X11/Xwrapper.config already changed to allowed_users=anybody)

I put 20-radeon.conf into /etc/X11/radeon, which is:
Section "Device"
Identifier "radeonGPU"
Driver "radeon"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection

If i just put 20-intel.conf into /etc/X11/radeon (just use intel IDG), the second xserver runs ok. Just using radeon DIS the second xserver started without any conntected output. run DISPLAY=:1 xrandr could confirm that, all disconnetted, so it's black screen on second xserver vtn, and default xserver vt7 still ok.

Am i missing something to config second xserver using radeon DIS, or it's not possible...

Ubuntu :: Dual Monitors - Cursor Gets Stuck Between X Screens

Aug 5, 2010

I have dual monitors that I have set up with two separate X screens with the nVidia control panel. For some reason at times when I move my mouse between the two screens, the cursor will start flickering rapidly between the adjacent edges of the screens and the system will become completely unresponsive, forcing me to do a hard reboot (the keyboard doesn't have a SysRq key).

Ubuntu :: Getting Model Of Monitors Connected To Computer?

Jul 19, 2010

I am currently developing an small program in Python and at a certain point, I need to do some "stuff" depending on the monitors that are connected to the computer. I have an intel vga card with two outputs. I want to do something if one of the screens connected to the output is a "Dell", another something if one of the monitors is a "Nec" and another something if both monitors are connected.

So the question is: Is there any way to get the vendor/model of the monitors currently connected to the computer? I did a little bit testing. I plugged both screens to my vga card (the Nec to the HDMI output and the Dell to the DVI output), and the gnome-display-properties tool properly detected the model, size, resolution... of both screens connected. I would like to know if I can use a command on bash (or a library in python) to get the same information.

The /var/log/Xorg.0.log also shows properly:
(II) intel(0): EDID vendor "NEC", prod id 26345
(II) intel(0): I2C device "HDMIDDC_C:E-EDID segment register" registered at address 0x60.
(II) intel(0): I2C device "HDMIDDC_C:ddc2" registered at address 0xA0.
(II) intel(0): EDID vendor "DEL", prod id 41027

I could always parse that file, but it is not the best solution. I also tried the ddprobe command, but for some reason, it only detects one of the screens (the Dell, connected to a DVI cable). I am currently using Ubuntu 9.04 and Python2.4 (just in case it's relevant).

Ubuntu :: ATI Card + Dell Laptop + Dual Monitors Of Different Sizes Has Problem With Cursor

Sep 29, 2010

I have a Dell Studio 1558 laptop with a 1366x768 resolution screen. I have an LG flatron monitor with a 1600x900 resolution screen. The screen is connected to the laptop via a vga cable.I am using the fglrx driver and have tried to configure the dual monitors through the ati catalyst user interface, aswell as through the gnome preferences>monitors user interface.

The problem is that I can move the mouse cursor over the top of the laptop screen. I think there is possibly some problem with a virtual desktop size of 900px high. Even in the gnome and ati monitor configuration UI's it shows a highlighted empty space above the placement of the laptop screen. This is very annoying as files on the desktop go north of the laptop screen when sorted by name, and the mouse just randomly disappears off the top of the screen sometimes.

Here is my xorg.conf, would really appreciate it if anyone can help me out here.

Identifier "Default Layout"

Ubuntu Installation :: Cursor Stuck At Upper Left Corner?

Dec 19, 2010

This issue was solved On June 9th. Root cause was Kore 2 controller device being misinterpreted as a pointing device. I hope to eventually use the Kore as a straight-up MIDI controller in Ubuntu Studio, but that's a long way off. For now I will unplug it whenever I boot Ubuntu Studio. XINPUT LIST gave me the hint I needed to figure this out. Original post and problem resolution thread follows:

I'm a total Linux newbie, but well versed in Windows. Just installed Ubuntu Studio 10.10. This was a clean install, not an upgrade.. Installation went fine, but when I boot into it, I get the cursor stuck at the upper left corner of the screen. When I move the mouse, the cursor will move, but it immediately jumps back to the upper left corner. I can't select anything except to open the main menu. Then I must use keyboard cursor control to navigate.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.4 Dual Monitors - Left Monitor Not Coming Out Of Powersave?

Sep 7, 2011

I have a really strange X (?) problem. My physical setup is:

Dell Optiplex 990
VisionTek 210 nV DMS59 PCIe video card (with a DVI splitter)
dual Dell P2411H monitors

I'm running OpenSuSE 11.4 (x86_64 fully patched) with the current nvidia drivers and kernel module. I'm running KDE and kdm in case that matters.

If I power off the two monitors, and then power them on again, the right monitor will come back on. The left monitor (which is the primary one... it's the one where the login screen appears when you are first logging in) reports that it is in power save mode. Wiggling the mouse, typing, etc., do not wake it up. The only thing that wakes it up is the detach the DVI cable from the monitor and reattach it (and sometimes it takes a couple tries).

I have used two (identical) video cards and splitters, and the problem occurred with both, so the problem doesn't appear to be with either of them. I also swapped monitors, but after the swap, the problem still occurred on the left monitor, and the old left monitor (which was now right) came on fine, so it doesn't appear to be a monitor problem.

I'm baffled. For now, I just won't turn off the monitors (or at least not the left monitor).

Fedora :: 12: Mouse Cursor Trapped In Top Left Corner?

Jan 12, 2010

For some reason the mouse curser starts out in the middle of the screen after booting as normal but as soon as i move it, it gets stuck in the top left corner of the screen. It still responds to clicks and i can sometimes see it "wants" to move but itets repositioned into that corner.he problem exists in the live-cd session as well as in the installed session.I looked into the Xorg.0.log file and it said something along the lines of:Code:HID XXXX:XXXX: failed to initialize for relative axesI suspect this to be the culprit, yet i've never had any problems with the mouse in any other operating system (writing from kubuntu 9.10 right now) and i've used most of the popular ones.Is there anything i can do about it? Seems that X is doing things differently in Fedora... There's got to be some switch or something.

Fedora :: Mouse Cursor Starts In Upper Left Corner In 15?

Aug 20, 2011

I finally got around to installing Fedora 15 on my HTPC. I noticed that the mouse cursor starts in the upper left corner of the screen as soon as the login screen appears. This means that after login, if I only used the keyboard so far, the Gnome Shell overlay starts immediately. This is at most an interesting quirk until I try to set XMBC to automatically launch. Now I have to press <Esc> or move the mouse to de-activate the overlay before I can use the program. Is this mouse cursor thing intended behaviour, is there some software fix, or is it a hardware quirk? I have a Radeon HD 4650 graphics card (Smolt profile).

Ubuntu Installation :: Fixing Grub - Volume Hangs With A Non-blinking Cursor In The Upper Left?

Mar 11, 2010

I set my drives up with MY boot loader, and I boot several OSes.I installed Ubuntu and told it to place grub on the / drive, which is where I always put it with any other install and it works fine.I find now that despite telling the install where to put it, you guys have taken it upon yourselves to alter the MBR of the volume ANYWAY!

SO, what I need to do is re-install grub, but I see that you also have no repair facility on this disc either. All I want to do is use MY boot loader. Currently, when I point at the / volume it just hangs with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left.No other Linux installs I have performed over the years do this. I want the drive to boot by merely pointing my bootloader at that volume. It always has in the past, so what did you guys change? I want NO action on my MBR, but I DO want a working grub on the actual root volume, which is NOT the first volume on the drive.

Only one of my two monitors have the gnome panels at the top and bottom of the screen. I would like the panels to show up on both screens.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 + Gnome Classic + 4 LCD Monitors?

Apr 29, 2011

I've installed this new Ubuntu 11.04 and I must say its horrible. Not because of the "Unity", but lack of support for multiple monitors. They work in "Gnome Classic", but the problem is there is many bugs. First bug is that any windows I open do not have borders or title bars, and only open in top left corner of the screen. On top of that, I can't type anything in those opened screens like when I open terminal for example. Second bug is that I can't add any new items to panels on other separate screens. As soon as I try to add anything, I get the following errors. "Indicator Applet Complete" has quit unexpectedly. So 11.04 failed for me I'm afraid. At this point I can't use it. This is very said because I was looking forward in running new version of Ubuntu. Its very strange that Ubuntu programmers don't have multiple screens by now to test ubuntu properly. As for Unity, nothing to talk about there. Its pure "Vista" style like screw up. It only works well on laptop or single monitor. I guess all I can do now, is wait again for 11.10 and hope all bugs will be fixed by then to support multiple monitors like 10.10 does now. Also, this will teach me installing new ubuntu version every six months LOL With all the bugs new ubuntu version comes out .04 releases is not worth it. Better wait at least in till .04.1 comes or even .10 versions. fix "Gnome Classic" so it will support multiple screens again. I think its something to do with Compiz, because windows decorations is not working on separate screens.
