Software :: Finding A Software To Monitor And Give Details On ISP And Internet Connection

Jun 19, 2010

I'm desperately in need of a Linux software that would give me a report on my internet connection. I'm connected to this pathetic ISP who's connection from my end keeps going down every two minutes (even though for a little while), but my downloads keeps getting interrupted, and it's generally frustrating. One moment I can have a DL of 512kbps and the next moment it's 0kbps. At times browsing won't be available, but other things like chat will be working fine.

The problem is, I've signed up with them on an annual package and made advance payment. Now they keep telling me there is nothing wrong with their internet provision and I cannot ask for my money. That is why I need some app that will sit in my PC and monitor the connection o24/7 and give me a report of how many times the connection kept going down, average speeds, etc.., which I can give to them.

I've tried installing Nagios, MRTG and others from synaptic, but don't even know how to start them up - they're not even appearing in the main menu. I tried to load MRTG from the terminal but it tells me:

Code:

ERROR: Mrtg will most likely not work properly when the environment variable LANG is set to UTF-8. Please run mrtg in an environment where this is not the case. Try the following command to start:

env LANG=C /usr/bin/mrtg

I even tried what it tells me, but no luck and I don't even know if I'm on the right track by using Nagios or MRTG?

Ubuntu :: License Key For Sniffer / Belarc?

Jul 19, 2011

Got a laptop I'm working on, the motherboard is fried. So I am archiving the data from the hard drive using a USB to Sata adapter. Is there a program native to Linux that can locate software license keys on an external drive similar to how Belarc Advisor or License Crawler does from Windows? If not, I can slave the drive in a Windows machine, I just normally do data retrieval in linux so I can safely scan the data.

Ubuntu :: Windows Vista Gone - When Restart - Does Not Give Me The Option For Windows

Oct 14, 2010

I believe i no longer have Vista. I had installed 10.04 side by side with Vista. Now that we have 10.10 i wanted to do a fresh installation on my laptop. I wanted to do the same thing, install it side by side so what i did is i installed gparted and tried to erase/delete ubuntu 10.04 and leave windows on it. From what i remember, i did just that. I restarted my laptop and windows didnt come up...i got a grub error...i decided then to install ubuntu 10.10. i selected to install ubuntu side by side again with vista. During the installation, i received an error about a partition...i made a few clicks...after it was installing and it went smoothly.

Now when i restart my laptop...it does not give me the option for windows....how do i know if i still have windows on my laptop? According to Gparted i dont have it anymore...

General :: Windows - Wi-Fi File Transfer Similar To Bluetooth?

Sep 12, 2011

It's a pity that Wi-Fi is used only for network and internet connection. There's no information on a thing that can seem so simple - file transfer via Wi-Fi.I can imagine it similarly to how Bluetooth does it (or Wi-Fi spot search which is already implemented), but no, it requires complicated LAN setup. What I want is an easy cross-platform solution to transfer files via Wi-Fi.

General :: Windows - Set Up A Virtual Machine In A Similar Way To A Headless Server?

Aug 16, 2011

I have an Ubuntu Desktop 11.04 virtual machine using VirtualBox on my Windows 7 system.

Up until now I have been doing all my development within the Ubuntu environment but unfortunately, I don't like it. I want to move back to Windows, which is much more familiar to me but I would still like to access the virtual box like a virtual server as it is already set up with Apache, PHP, Pear, Git etc...

How can I make the two work in harmony? I essentially want to be able to start the VM and connect to it as if it was a server machine somewhere on my network, without having to actually buy another machine to put on my network.

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Won't Give Windows Option

Jan 4, 2010

my ubuntu install is running pretty well, but I need to boot into Windows 7 to print and convert some proprietary OneNote files. The trouble is that while my menu.lst shows a Windows option - and a few others, too, that don't seem to show up in grub2 - grub does not give me the Windows option. In fact, it seems to follow only the contents of grub.cfg.I have tried running sudo update-grub, and it does work, but does not resolve the problem.

Ubuntu Installation :: Does Not Give The Option To Boot To Windows

May 29, 2011

I unplugged the Windows drive, during the installation of Ubuntu 9 (to make things easier). 2 separate drives. When installation was complete, I plugged the other drive back in (now both are plugged in). I went to the BIOS and made sure the Linux drive was the set to boot before the windows drive. The only thing that comes before that of course is the cd drive

CD-0
HDD-1 (linux)
HDD-0 (windows)

I booted into linux after this and ran 'sudo update-grub'. The cmd was successful. However, when rebooting it does not give me the option to boot to windows. Why not? PS. If I go to Places (under GNOME bar), Then I can see (and mount) the windows drive. So it is accessible.

Ubuntu Servers :: Differentiate Between Connections From Windows And Computers

May 21, 2010

I have a question about connections with an ubuntu server. Is there a way to know if the terminal computer (which is connected to my linux server) is using WinSCP to connect (on a Windows platform) or a linux system? It seems they are using the same port (22) and I think the exact same protocol (SSH / SFTP), is there a way to differentiate between the two though? And going farther there, is it possible to limit the connections only to linux terminal computers and reject requests coming from Windows computers?

Ubuntu Installation :: Remove Windows And Give Rest Of Drive Without Having To Completely Reinstall?

May 25, 2010

i installed the new ubuntu on my system as a side by side installation, i've been using it for about 2 weeks now. ported over or found linux equivalents of any applications and games i use onto my ubuntu partition, and now i've decided i want to have ubuntu use the entire drive and just delete windows! The problem is, i'm not sure if i can do that I shrank my windows partition half a gig and booted lupu (the ubuntu partitioner wasn't even showing this half a gig of free space) to see if i could just extend my linux partition (in the case that this did work, i was just planning on deleting my windows partition and just extending my linux to the full size of my drive). I really want to avoid a full reformat of the drive because i have customized my ubuntu a decent bit and i don't want to have to redo all of that (not to mention the data, but i could always back that up on an external hdd). Here is a screenie of gparted: i don't really know too much about partitioning. so is there any way to remove windows and give linux the rest of the drive without having to completely reinstall ubuntu?
