Ubuntu Multimedia :: "Play To" Function Similar To Windows 7?

May 23, 2010

Is it possible to add a "play to" menu in the context menu in nautilus like in windows 7? For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about: When you right click a media file (avi/mp3/mkv etc) in windows 7, it lets you select "Play to" and then lists all upnp/dlna devices on the network, and the amazing thing is that when you select a device, the media file is actually played on that device! It would be so much easier to select a file and then "play to" my xbmc htpc, than to move the video to the htpc and then index it and then browse for it on the htpc and then remove it after I've seen it...

I couldn't find anything about a feature like that...? There must be someone else, beside me, that would love a feature like that? I know I can install ushare and stream that way, but the big difference is that the movie is started from my computer and not on the xbox, htpc, tv, av-reciever or what you use to watch movies over the network! It would make it so much easier! Setting up sharing, and then adding them to what you use for playback and then finally browse to your movie and selecting play is just not worth it when you know how much easier it can be done using "play to" for a few movies.

OpenSUSE :: OS11.3 - Get Banshee / Rhythombox To Play M4a - Aac Or Similar?

Aug 2, 2010

Has anyone succeeded in coercing either banshee or rhythmbox to play "restricted" media? On my 11.3 install, I have all the packages from the "one-click" install that takes 49 clicks to find on the new wiki structure ... Playback works correctly in mplayer, gnome-mplayer, and smplayer. VLC works also, ... yawn ....

This is the third consecutive release (AT BEST) where this stuff is badly broken! By badly broken, I mean that installing all the needed software and codecs does not appear to be the only requirement. I was able to get it working in 11.1 and 11.2, but only via a hit and miss series of un-install the packages, reinstall one by one ... making offerings of fatty sheep ... reinstalling again .... performing the second part of the ring cycle for the neighbours cat ... remove the codecs again .... install again ... wow ... it's working ... set the entire system to ro ... sing for the cat again!

Does anyone have any insight as to why gstreamer is SOOOOOOO foobared in OpenSUSE? Can anyone articulate a series of steps that will actually get the desired result? BTW, getting this stuff working in FC13 is trivial. Add the fusion repo and install the codecs! I remember a better day in SuSE land when one added the packman repo and installed the codecs ...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: VLC Can Play But Only The Windows Version?

Apr 4, 2010

I recently upgraded my hardware to 64 bit dual core and a new Nvidia graphics card - GeForce 210. When I tried to play a BBC documentary, nothing happened. I think movie player starts up and promptly crashes. I tried starting the program manually and asking it to play the DVD. The program crashed and "vanished before my eyes". Oh well! another nvidia story. I dual booted and even Windows Media Player (latest version), refused to play the DVD, complaining of some security mismatch or something to do with the video card driver. I downloaded and installed VLC, windows version and all went well. Returning to Ubuntu, I found that the Linux version of VLC failed. (I have installed the proprietary drivers)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Play Windows Media Streams From A Website?

Sep 15, 2010

I am having problems listening to windows media streams from a particular website ( http://radiotime.com ) whenever I try to listen to a stream from firefox, the page loads then connects but i have no sound (i am actually trying to listen to those two chinese radios .. I have the mplayerplug-in/gecko-mediaplayer installed, but it doesn't work, I tought that maybe there was a problem with that plugin so I deactivated it and installed the vlc plugin, after restarting firefox and trying to listen to those streams again, the vlc plugin tried to read it but it still would not work. I even tried to install the Silverlight Plug-In without any result, does anybody know what I could do to make windows media audio streams work ? it is wierd because i seem to be able to watch windows media video streams from other websites, but i cannot listen to any stream from this one, it used to work for mp3 streams only, but after desinstalling/resinstalling the mplayer plug in, it doesn't work anymore on this website. I can listen to those streams without any problem under windows 7, so the problem isn't coming from the website.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Slower Than Windows 7 In 3D And X264 Play?

Apr 10, 2010

I'm using openSUSE 11.2 64bit in Dell E6400 with Intel video chipset. I can play x264 720p files without any problems in Windows 7, but in openSUSE, I could play it in Totem, but it is very slow (lots of stopping).

In addition, in songbird, if I use the mediaflow add-on,the scroll becomes really sluggish.

In general, I feel like openSUSE is showing less ram usage but higher CPU usage than Windows 7. Is my video card driver is messed up? I really like openSUSE a lot but so it is disappointing....

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Dvd Drive Doesn't Play Store Bought But Does Play My Copies Of Them

Mar 10, 2010

After many days of trying to tweak Ubuntu 9.10 desktop i386. This subject will focus on my dvd drive. ...Here is what I have done, but I'm not sure what I did or still need to do, or to do different. ...

Basically the problem is, I can't play store bought DVDs, but I can play my copies of them.

When using MDPlayer that I added to Ubuntu, I can play the copies of my store bought DVDs, but not the originals. However, when using Ubuntu 9.10's movie player, it wont do anything and I'll have to do a force quit to close it.

I learned that this may because there is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution, as I'm sure you already knew.
...Yet, Most people have worked around these issues.

I came across the Medibuntu site:

Running the Terminal, I added the bash command that adds Medibuntu's repositiry to Ubuntu. It also adds Medibuntu's GPG key to the keyring.
(The sudo wget - etc etc etc --quiet update)

Then I jumped down to the... "This command should be run in the Terminal, after adding the repository:" ...And did that. (sudo sed -e 's/ etc etc etc /medibuntu.list)

However, clicking the play button does nothing.

General :: Windows - Set Up A Virtual Machine In A Similar Way To A Headless Server?

Aug 16, 2011

I have an Ubuntu Desktop 11.04 virtual machine using VirtualBox on my Windows 7 system.

Up until now I have been doing all my development within the Ubuntu environment but unfortunately, I don't like it. I want to move back to Windows, which is much more familiar to me but I would still like to access the virtual box like a virtual server as it is already set up with Apache, PHP, Pear, Git etc...

How can I make the two work in harmony? I essentially want to be able to start the VM and connect to it as if it was a server machine somewhere on my network, without having to actually buy another machine to put on my network.
