My system (ubuntu studio 9.10, 32bit) was working just great. Then I installed dropbox via synaptic -- and it worked just great.Then I got some very strange behavior in how my tabs (firefox) worked, and the windows on the system would no longer respond.I restarted.... and the behavior got worse.. my menu would not show up, and when I opened dropbox -- the windows would not move, their menu(s) did not work, and I could not close them.
I tried to:
-- reinstall gnome
-- reinstall nautilus

I use a few KDE apps in gnome, and I like them to look as in KDE with elegant qt style buttons and controls,however they look like whatever but what qt applications look like.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo I'm having a weird issue with Gnome 3 in Ubuntu 11.04 64-bit (daily-live 4.25.2011). Anyways here's the issue, some windows File Menu bar is like the classic GTK style and doesn't look anything like the other windows, even though its an updated version. For example this happens on Gnome Terminal (3.0) and Empathy (3.0) and Nautilus (3.0) and a few others, but Firefox is fine, etc.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I go to the appearance preferences in Ubuntu 10.04 w/GNOME and try to select a cursor different from the default, nothing happens, the cursor refuses to change. Logging out and in doesn't work. Over the weeks I've played around with this machine a bit, installing and uninstalling various DEs such as Kubuntu and LXDE; I have a feeling something messed up my cursor config while I was changing stuff, but I don't know what or where. Is there any quick way to troubleshoot why the cursor isn't changing?

Then I restored the mime directory back, and typed command sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Humanity. But my action doesn't work. The files' icons remains the gnome style.

I can see every tray icon, every window that opened or minimized at panels, I have my menus, I don't need some mouse tricks to see something. Unity and Gnome 3 are fancy but I don't look for fancy.
Gnome 3 is the next generation. I don't like it. I don't like Unity either. And the problem is Gnome 2 will not be evolved much with its own standard interface because Gnome 3 is arrived. Gnome 2 is getting closer to its end of life. Bugs will not be handled with more attention, compatibilities will be less.So than, I don't like this situation of Gnome 2 either.

We have DockbarX in GNOME, which is nice (grouping the windows like Windows 7), but it doesn't enable the <Win>+<2> style keybaord shortcuts.This is not restricted to making Linux like Windows. But I just find the <Win>+<2> style shortcut very useful. Are there similar ways in Linux to quickly switch between specific apps without pressing <Alt>+<Tab> many many times?

Now that I changed to ubuntu with gnome, there's no search box at the Applications menu by default. And I cannot find anyway to add it anywhere.

I recently got a new laptop, put in a couple partitions, installed windows in one and ubuntu 10.10 (64 bit) in another (ext4, 50GB, boot), left another partition for swap (6GB) and finally another for storage (160GB, ntfs). I'm also using an nvidia GeForce 460M with nvidia-current installed (version 260.19.06). My problem is that all the icons (power "button", network manager, etc), general menus (e.g. in firefox) look "classic". That is to say not the "slick" appearance that I'm used to in the latest ubuntu.
I'm thinking it is something to do with either:
1) my X server config
2) gnome install
3) general incompatability with latest nvidia driver
I've looked through a bunch of different forum posts around nvidia and ubuntu (thinking this was the main source), but can't seem to find anything quite like this.To no avail, I've tried:
1) Fiddling with the X server settings through the nvidia app
2) reinstalling gnome-desktop, gnome-panel
3) reinstalling the nvidia driver
4) installing compiz (much prettier special effects, not a solution to the basic problem)
5) Messing around with appearance settings.

I had KDE installed (kubuntu maverick), and moved to Gnome (to support screen dimming on my dell laptop).
Now, when I click on Places and anything (say Desktop), Krusader starts up (I set krusader to the default in KDE).
Where do I change this? I can't find the location in preferences to change this.
I rely heavily on Gnome-Do to open folders in Nautilus.
This worked just fine in Ubuntu Desktop. However, in Openbox it opens folders in Chromium.
This is annoying for two reasons:
One, obviously i would like to view the selected folders in Nautilus.
And, two, i would like to set Firefox 4 as the browser of choice when opening anything via Gnome-Do. It is set as my browser of choice in Preferred Applications.
I have searched for configuration files, but see no entry i could modify, and would not know where to begin writing my own commands.
I am sure many people must use Gnome-Do in Openbox. If you are one of them, did you encounter similar issues? If so, how did you fix them?
I am using OpenSUSE 11.3 with GNOME "attached". My problem is that Nautilus has become a burden for me and my simple needs. I often encounter a slow responsiveness (lag) and a slow speed browsing throughout folders/files. I have installed Dolphin and i wish to set it up as my default File Manager.
View 9 Replies View RelatedKarmic there was a tab inside "System->Preferences->Appearance" called "Interface" which allowed me to modify the keyboard shortcuts. I had <Backspace> to move backwards in Nautilis and <Shift><Backspace> to move forward.
Without this tab can anyone tell me how I can modify the shortcuts to do this? I have spent some time looking at gconf-editor but nothing is jumping out at me, particularly with regards to the back and forward browsing.
I have ubuntu 10.04 installed, yesterday I installed gnome color chooser. Because it not working for me I choose to uninstall it from synaptic package manager,unfortunately I also removed the nautius.
Then, I reinstall with sudo apt-get install nautilus.
But when I restarted, I can't login (the login screen showed, when I type the password there is nothing happen) but when I ctrl+alt+f2 and login via console I can login.
Im having a rather bizarre problem with the gnome panel in ubuntu 11.04. When i go to places and try to home folder, desktop, etc with a mouse click, Nautilus does not open. Instead a really old looking program called textedit opens. The only thing that doesnt cause textedit to open is clicking on computer.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently switched my desktop environment from KDE-4.3.4 to GNOME-2.28-2 and I did that by installing most of the gnome-packages and uninstalling pretty much all of the kde-ones. After reboot everything worked fine except the file browser that doesn't seem to care about my feelings. It launches and when I try to kill the process the status changes from sleeping to uninterruptible and then back to sleeping. The only way is to reboot but that isn't a solution.Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.

Thought it might be fusermount, but no.Gnome-mount is not installed. Perhaps it is via AL or udev, but what commands control it? I've found posts that talk about using gnome-mount, but these are outdated as this package isn't even installed by default anymore.I would like to unmount certain volumes via the command line, but without having root privileges as gnome is doing by clicking in nautilus. Are there any command lines commands that will allow me to do this (not talking about pmount which is not installed)?Also, is there a way to prevent automounting of just certain devices, but not all? I have a USB with 7 different things on it (a "built-in" CD for some reason for windoz users, the original NTFS, and 5 linux partitions). I got a call from a friend who did the distrubution upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 and all was well for about 2 weeks and then his desktop icons disappeared. He kept running it that way and never looked for help until a couple of days ago he tried to plug in a card reader to get some pictures from his camera and nothing happened. that was when he discovered that he couldn't run Nautilus at all. I had him purge nautilus and reinstall it but then he couldn't even log in to Ubuntu. Very strange indeed. Anyone else experience this? After going over all the settings and finding them what they should be, I just installed 10.04 and all is well except that he lost a few photos.
