I have kubuntu 8.1 installed. When i started the machine to day, the appearance and theme was changed to GNOME. How do i get back my KDE desktop. Even my internet connection is not working now!
View 2 RepliesI just booted up ubuntu, and instead of the beautiful default appearance, my task bar and some of the icons in my launcher (home folder, workplace switcher) look like they were thrown back 5 or 6 years in time.

How do I get it back to the default setting?
I did a bunch of updates, in sid, no issues. But when I rebooted the next day the log in had chanded. No problems logging in, the appearance had changed, and you now have to use the mouse to click on your name to open the password box, where before you could hit enter and get the same results. It is not much, but I have been trying to to restore it back with out much luck. I've played with gdm and gdm3 and a couple of other things but no luck. I did see a update for log in but have not been able to figure out the next step.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently installed my first distro, Gnome Ubuntu Linux 10.04 via WUBI dual-booting alongside my Windows. I decided to try the other desktop environments. So I installed Kubuntu-Desktop (KDE) and Xubuntu-Desktop (XFCE) using Synaptic Package Manager.
However, Kubuntu KDE changed the boot splash screen into a from the default Ubuntu one, to the Kubuntu one. Also Xubuntu XFCE changed the log-in screen to the Xubuntu one. I DO NOT want these changes. I just wanted Normal Ubuntu-branded Ubuntu Linux with the option of logging in into the desktop environment of my choice.
how I get my gnome panel to have the slant that this person has in their pic. I have it right now on the top right side (like a wingpanel) but its just a rectangle

Notice how it's more square. System->Preferences->Appearances doesn't seem to help.
I tried out the 10.04 beta in VirtualBox, and the tab for Interface in Appearance Settings was gone. This tab allowed you to edit the appearance of Toolbars in Ubuntu. You could edit whether Icons showed up in the toolbar buttons and whether Text shows up beside it. This is kind of a minor annoyance for me; is there any way to edit this option outside of the appearance settings? I'm sure there is (like editing some config file or GConf), but I'm not sure where.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with remote connection over SSH and Xming, Every time I connect to Linux host from Windows I have to run gnome-appearance-settings to restore scheme settings to the one set after directly loging to Ubuntu. Otherwise, all fonts sizes and colors are set in such a way that they are barely readable. Is there a way to save this configuration so I will not have to re-set it alays after login? Ubuntu version 10.10.

And it contains a single file (580 bytes) with the properties - theme (application/x-theme) which is unreadable. I need the gtkrc file for this theme but cannot find it anywhere! I searched /usr and /home and the entire file system. Where it might be hiding?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am running a HP dc5750 dual core computer with a 512MB Nvidia 7200/7300 graphics card my operating system is Ubuntu 10.10. Both my processors are operating at 98-104% cpu usage, it appears that gnome-appearance-properties is the culprit and the only way to return to normal is to end these processes. I have been setting up the desktop cube to my liking and the processor appears to rise up to 100% again. Would getting a 1GB graphics card correct this or is this a bug in maverick meerkat. Any advice would be appreciated. Please keep it simply as I am a Newbie to Linux and find things over-whelming at times. Also would running at 100% on both processors at indefinite periods of time harm my computer.

View 3 Replies View RelatedYesterday I've installed KDE (kubuntu-desktop) upon Ubuntu to give it a try after a very long time I didn't use KDE. I decided to remove it and go back to GNOME. I removed the KDE packages using this sudo:

The KDE has been removed but some how some of the font changed.
The font settings in the Appearance->Fonts are as they suppose to be (Sans,10...).
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 & I went to change my appearance/theme & I got this error message failed to execute child process "gnome-appearance-properties"
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have deleted the mime directory under /usr/share/icons/Humanity, and many files' icons have changed to the gnome style. Then I restored the mime directory back, and typed command sudo gtk-update-icon-cache /usr/share/icons/Humanity. But my action doesn't work. The files' icons remains the gnome style.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just started up Kubuntu, and it shows the Ubuntu desktop instead of Plasma. Before this, the only change I did was remove my Broadcom WiFi card because Kubuntu sometimes couldn't boot because of some error mentioning the bcm driver and phy5.
I removed the card, and no errors on boot. Now, I can't get on the internet because Kubuntu can't connect to anything. I see all of the networks, but I guess GNOME is interfering with Network Manager...
I set up Kubuntu today because the keyboard input was messed up in GNOME, due to some file being corrupted. Does anybody know how to replace GNOME files in Kubuntu? I'm new to it, trying to find my way around.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm having minor, but very annoying, issue in Kubuntu 9.10. Recently I installed the Gnome desktop to see if certain bugs I was experiencing were KDE-centric. I have since uninstalled Gnome (and reconfigured my audio drivers and reinstalled wicd, all of which was made short shrift of by Gnome), but one thing I can't get rid of is this annoying drum click sound in certain applications. All extension buttons in my browser now make the click sound, as well as the TrueCrypt GUI.
I know this is a very minor issue, but I've always configured my operating systems with absolutely no system sounds (only audio and video playback), so I'm finding this particularly distracting. Right now, the only option I have is to mute PCM volume, which also mutes streaming audio and video in my browser...
I'm at my wit's end. I have all sound notifications turned off in system settings (though there were relatively few to begin with in KDE). there's a magic sudo code I can cast to exorcise my computer of mouse click sounds.

In between i have upgraded my system. now when i am giving priority to hard disk containing kubuntu, i can login to kubuntu, but cant get in to windows7. i have upgraded grub but not working. when i am giving priority to hard disk containig windows7 it enters and work properly. but not working in the previous.

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?
I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?
I recently installed virtual box on debian and after it had finished my terminal informed me that I could remove some "unnecessary" software by use of sudo apt-get autoremove. When I did this, some of the icons on the desktop changed and all of the icons in the drop down menu on the bar at the top of the screen also changed to ordinary folder symbols. The theme that I was using also went away. I restarted the computer and it booted back into a shell prompt with no GUI. I tried to get back to the GUI using alt+f7 but it didn't seem to exist
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am creating a custom distro of Ubuntu for a company, changing a few things to meet their needs. One of the things I would like to change is the splash screen, but for some reason the "appearance" tab does not appear in StartUp-Manager.
Splashy still has the bug where it can't be installed due to a conflicting package in Ubuntu, so I believe that this is the only way to do it.
Running 9.10 (the system i'm trying to change) on a dual boot configuration with 10.04 as my main OS.
I've installed Lucid, and so far the only problem I'm having repeatedly is that my appearance settings aren't saving. Every time I reboot I have to change the visual effects from "none" to "normal", whereupon it searches for drivers and changes the settings. Any ideas what could be causing this and how to fix it?

this is true when right clicking on desktop (option present but when clicked, new window no longer opens) and,
when going through system / appearance, no new window appears.
I installed audacious and was searching around how to add new themes. I've learned how to do that but the only problem is when i go to file/preferences There is no appearance tab. Anybody know how i can fix this, i really want to add some winamp themes to this thing, or at least be able to change some of the appearance.
