Ubuntu :: Manage An External Raid With 10.10 Desktop?
Dec 21, 2010
i want to setup an external raid array that i can manage with a netbook running 10.10 desktop such that i can use the raid at will similar to an external usb drive (or set of them).is this possible?
i am reading through this thread..[URL]... it looks very informative but because i am a complete noob with raids i am not sure that what i want to do is even possible.

I've tried to install Fedora 11, both 32 and 64 on my main machine. It could not install as it stops on the first install window. I've already filed a bug but really haven't seen any feed back yet.The bug has something to do with Anaconda and the Raid array but I really can't tell.
I have an Intel Board (see signature). I am running intel raid software under W7 currently. It works fine. But, I'm wondering, when I attempt to install F!!, is my current raid set-up causing problems? Do I need to get rid of the intel raid software and use a Fedor/Linux raid program to manage the raid array??

I have IBM x3550 M3 machine with ServeRAID-M1015 on board. I set up RAID1 on machine and have question : 1. Is there some kind of software to manage hardware RAID from within operating system level? What I mean by saying "manage hardware RAID from oes level" is I would like to see status of disks in array, be able to initiate rebuild process and etc. This post doesn't relate software RAID only hardware RAID.

I just installed the F-15 Beta and cannot find a way to manage the appearance of the Desktop. It does have Background and Screen Settings but that's all I can find. I would like to reduce the size of the icons and alter the fonts if that's possible.

I've got an old p3 with 11 ide hard drives strapped to it for storage and I decided to throw Ubuntu server on it because it's more lightweight than a standard ubuntu install, and given it's a pentium 3 with 128mb of ram, lightweight is good. I installed, through putty (ssh), the gnome gui - then learned that putty only does cli (i was thrilled), so I've spend the last hour trying to figure out how to enable remote desktop.
I don't mind reinstalling to do what is necessary. remote desktop to manage file downloads from my windows 7 machine(s) big list, i know. history: this thing is/was my media server. I had xp on it, sharing all drives and watching hd movies off it, but then xp decided it did't want to boot anymore so here we are. I'm thinking of just putting ubuntu 8.04/8.10 on it and through its wonderful gui enabling remote desktop and using realvnc/tightvnc to access it

I have an external icy doc with 4 750GB drives. There connected via external esata to an older machine and I just built a raid 5 on it, and it seems perfect, mounted as /dev/md0, note this is running the latest 10.10.version.
I've been around a while, but never using software raid, but I want to upgrade the hardware here in the next few months so if I take that drive, plug it into the new server, under disk management, will I be able to just mount it? I know there getting good, but I assume somewhere there has to be a config file or something that says 'hey use these 4 external drives' or something like that.

I like 11.04 with Unity however I would like to find a method of managing workspaces with mouse (not keyboard) which gives constant visual feedback and is faster than using the launcher bar, which although not 'slow', takes time to appear and it then takes time to locate the (non movable) desktop switcher item.I happily adopt most of what 11.04 (Unity) offers, however, I really still miss the good visual feedback and the single click action that the lower panel (classic) desktop switcher used. Is there a way of me using some item in unity which is closely similar?

Have 4xSamsung F4 HDDs in an Ex503, Raid 05 - don't know how to format them to get maximum speed out of them. I've read [URL] tor_issues and other things but guess i am too dumb. Some claim using GPT Partition table and gparted and i shouldn't have any problems because it's automatically doing what i want, but i am not sure about that.

I'm building a new desktop computer, on which I plan to install Debian Squeeze. I'll have a 1 TB SATA hard drive in the system. I'm also considering using two 500 GB external USB drives, but I'm debating about how I want to use them. Running them all separately for 2 TB of space could be a nightmare, with three potential points of failure, so I was thinking of using the two external drives as a backup system instead.
I'm considering linking the two external drives in a RAID 0 array, then linking that array and the internal drive in a RAID 1 array. I would use mdadm software RAID for all of this so I could use individual partitions in the arrays, avoid hardware dependency, and have greater software control. So now is this feasible to do (having a partial RAID 0+1 setup)? Moreover, what kind of performance could I expect from using potentially slow external drives (one of which I know has a very long spin-up time after idle periods) in a mirroring setup with the internal drive?Would I be far better off using a filesystem backup daemon instead?
EDIT:After some more research and brainstorming, I've decided I might just end up using rsync+cron, lsyncd, or DRBD (assuming it can easily make backups locally). I'd probably have to link up the external drives in RAID 0 (or use some filesystem link trickery). But I suppose such a setup would offer greater control, flexibility in disk capacities (the full system isn't so strictly limited to the capacity of the smallest member of the array), and granularity than RAID 0+1 would.I'm still open to thoughts on the mdadm RAID 0+1 solution, but does anyone have any advice on choosing backup software? For some background on my needs, I'll be using this computer as both an everyday desktop and a personal LAMP server (MySQL database files would be included in the backups).

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:
Code:
root@127.0.0.1:/etc# mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb2:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 00.90.00
code....
Code:
mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

Ubuntu does not see any hardware RAIDs on this server - Intel confirms that they do not support Debian distros with this onboard SATA controller.
Tried going with CentOS and OpenSUSE ... CentOS would install, but wouldn't boot. OpenSUSE would work but after multiple installs, Samba wouldn't start.
That left us with Ubuntu Server.
While Ubuntu Server can't see a hardware raid, it can see each of the hard drives individually. From there, I created a software RAID during Ubuntu setup and was able to install.
Initially had some issues with mdadm "losing" the hot-spare ... was able to fix that by adding sd[abc][12] to /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf ...
It worked fine until I plugged a WD MyBook usb hard drive into the machine.
I lose the hot spare (configured on /dev/sdc) because it mounts the USB hard drive there.
I need to be able to make it mount the USB hard drive AFTER mdadm configures /dev/sdc as the 3rd Hitachi hard drive
What needs to be done to make this work?

I just thought I should signup, been checking this forum for a while and so far it had answered most of my google searches. I'm on Karmic Ubuntu and this problem keeps annoying me since it will probably damage my hdd. It's like this: I seed a lot of torrents and I'm keeping my external plugged in; most of the time it's innactive since no one is leeching old torrents and it stays mounted in stand by, being a LP model.
Now, whenever I access a folder on my desktop to browse or whatever, Nautilus freezes because it takes time to get my external back from the stand by. The problem is that the desktop folder isn't linked in any way to the external, so why is Nautilus refreshing everything including my externals when it gets started ? I have 3 externals and this happens for them all. Did you guys ever experienced this ? I was wondering if there was a fox around this or something, I'm kinda new to linux graphic interfaces.

I just installed it on my desktop. I love it so far, but I'm having trouble setting up a network in my apartment. I have the desktop directly plugged into my router and a mac laptop linked wirelessly to the router. I also have a printer and an external hard drive plugged into the desktop. The goal is to be able to access the external hard drive and use the printer from my mac laptop, as well as access the mac laptop from the desktop.
Right now, I can access the mac from the desktop with ubuntu on it. Under "Places" and then "Network," I can mount the folders I want and then access the contents.
I can also print and access my external hard drive from the ubuntu desktop.
However, on the mac laptop in the Finder under "Network" there is nothing. I can ping the desktop from the mac and get a response, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to get beyond this. In System Preferences I have "File Sharing" and "Printer Sharing" both checked.

So I've got a weird issue with my usb external drive. It's a generic enclosure in to which I've mounted a toshiba IDE drive. It appears as "Generic USB to IDE bridge".Said drive works fine on every machine I try to use it on, but NOT my laptop. Oh, it will appear in LSUSB, and in dmesg, (sometimes it appears, but the partitions do not, e.g. I see sdc, but not sdc1 and sdc2).
However, on any attempt to access it (it mounts fine too), Dolphin hangs (and so does most of KDE). I assume a disk sleep is the problem. Unplugging the drive resolves the hang. ages later, the drive will copy bits of data in small spurts, until it hangs for some more time. After a while, I see an ACHI/USB reset message in the system logs, and the drive resumes copying for some more time.
The drive is bus powered, but it doesn't matter if I use one/both USB connectors, and like I said, it works fine on my desktop, which also has SuSE 11.4 on it. Any ideas what's going on? Sorry if I left out some info, I wanted to get this out and let you folks stew over it while I'm running some errands.

When my netbook has an extended screen, using an external monitor, all of the panels stay on the netbook, not the big monitor. When I connect an external monitor, I want to use it as my primary screen. I only really intend to use the netbook screen for skype calls (so I am looking into the webcam, and not away from it) since it is so small. I wish the secondary screen to be the netbook, not the external monitor. How can I do this?

I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off.
A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB).
In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.

I have a raid5 on 10 disk, 750gb and it have worked fine with grub for a long time with ubuntu 10.04 lts. A couple of days ago I added a disk to the raid, growd it and then resized it.. BUT, I started the resize-process on a terminal on another computer, and after some time my girlfriend powered down that computer!
So the resize process cancelled in the middle and i couldn't acess any of the HDDs so I rebooted the server.
Now the problem, the system is not booting up, simple black with a blinking line. Used a rescue CD to boot it up, finised the resize-process and the raid seems to be working fine so I tried to boot normal again. Same problem. Rescue cd, updated grub, got several errors: error: unsupported RAID version: 0.91. I have tried to purge grub, grub-pc, grub commmon, removed /boot/grub and installed grub again. Same problem.
I have tried to erased mbr (# dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/sdX bs=446 count=1) on sda (ide disk, system), sdb (sata, new raid disk). Same problem. Removed and reinstalled ubuntu 11.04 and is now getting error: no such device: (hdd id). Again tried to reinstall grub on both sda and sdb, no luck. update-grub is still generating error about raid id 0.91 and is back on a blinking line on normal boot. When you'r resizeing a raid MDADM changed the ID from 0.90 to 0.91 to prevent something that happend happened. But since I have completed the resize-process MDADM have indeed changed the ID back to 0.90 on all disks.
I have also tried to follow a howto on a similar problem with a patch on [URL] But I cant compile, various error about dpkg. So my problem is, I cant get grub to work. It just gives me a blinking line and unsupported RAID version: 0.91.

I have installed Ubuntu on my m1530 since 8.04 and currently dual boot Win7 and 10.10. I would like to dual boot on my PC, but I have run into a problem. I am not a pro at Ubuntu, but this problem I can not solve by reading forums like I have in the past.
I realize this is a common problem, but I have noticed people having success.
I have a M4A87TD EVO MB with two Seagate drives in Raid 0. (The raid controller is a SB850 on that MB) I use the raid utility to create the raid drive that Windows7x64 uses. I have 2 partitions and 1 unused space. Partition 1 is Windows, partition 2 is for media, and the remaining unused space is for Ubuntu.
I am running ubuntu-10.10-desktop-amd64 off a Cruzer 16GB flash drive that was installed via Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.1.4.
My problem like so many others is that when I load into Ubuntu, gparted detects two separate hard drives instead of the raid. I read that this is because kpartx is not installed on 10.10. I then went in LiveCD mode and downloaded kpartx from Synaptic Manager. Gparted still reported two drives. I opened terminal and run a few commands with kpartx. I received an error. (Forgive me I didn't write it down, but I believe it said something about a communication error. I will try again later and see.)
Currently I am reflashing the Cruzer with a persistence of 4GB. I am not familiar with this process, but I understand that my LiveCD boot will save information I download to it. I decided to try this method because I was going to install kpartx and reboot to see if this made a difference.
I am looking for any suggestions on a different method or perhaps someone to tell me that the raid controller or some hardware isn't supported. I did install ubuntu-10.10-alternate-amd64 on my flash drive, but fail to get past detecting my CD-ROM drive since it's not plugged in. If this method is viable, I will plug it in. I also watched the ..... video were a guy creates Raid 0 with the alternated CD, but it wasn't a dual boot and didn't use a raid controller from a MB.
