I was unsure whether to post this here or in the laptop section. My problem is that I want to extend the desktop on my laptop to a monitor so that I can use BOTH the monitor and my laptop screen. But I don't see where to do this.
I am running openSUSE 11.4 64-bit.
I have an Acer Aspire One AO150 and am having trouble plugging in an external monitor under Ubuntu 9.10. There were no problems under 9.04. If I plug in an external monitor once the machine is already up, then bring up the 'display' application to activate it, it basically hangs. There are no problem under these circumstances if I have desktop effects turned off.
A few more details after a question below. The machine does not respond to its keyboard commands to switch to an external monitor, nor does it respond to Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc to switch out of X. The pointer is visible on the monitors (at the edge of each) and is frozen as a 'busy' cursor, but with no animation. The kernel does respond to SysReq commands (REISUB).
In the latest attempt I had the external monitor active earlier, then removed it and activated desktop effects. Upon plugging in the eternal monitor then bringing up the display application, it hangs.
I am having a Dell ST2410 LCD and a laptop IBM.I want to span my desktop so that some portion is on laptop and some on external monitor. I tried xdmx but it did not worked.

When I connect an external monitor, I want to use it as my primary screen. I only really intend to use the netbook screen for skype calls (so I am looking into the webcam, and not away from it) since it is so small. I wish the secondary screen to be the netbook, not the external monitor. How can I do this?

The monitor configuration app always want the primary monitor to be on the left hand side, thus it always extend my desktop right. (Extended desktop)When I maximize any window in my external monitor, the window gets under the panel, instead of getting maximized properly. I have tried a few different ways but no matter what I do the desktop will end up on my LCD and the laptop is the extended desktop. Anyone know where I am going wrong? Here is the command I've been using:

I'd like to solve a little problem that I have connecting my notebook with an external VGA monitor.Everything seems to work fine, but when I close the laptop monitor, also the external monitor shuts down.I've tried to find different energy-saving setting for laptop display and external monitor. with no luck...My video card is an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M. On the ATI website there is no catalist control center for linux. (It would be very useful). So, for now, I can only use the display options on the panel.

It runs on 2048x1152 full resolution, however, the picture on the monitor is blurry, it vibrates and looks like old TV with interlacing.
I tried to disable output to LVDS screen on laptop using xrandr but it doesn't help/
Previously I had HP laptop with integrated Intel and OpenSuse 11.0 and the external screen worked normally.
When I'm connecting second monitor to the laptop, Display Settings applet (and xrandr -q) does not detect full list of supported resolutions. View 7 Replies View RelatedI am having problems getting my external monitor to work. When I plug in the monitor, both the laptop screen and the external monitor go black. When I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen works again.
When I startup with the external monitor plugged in, neither screen works or teh computer hangs or something.
I have had the external monitor going on a couple of occasions. I did manage to configure my monitors through System Settings > Display. I turned off the laptop monitor as I just want to use the external. But after rebooting, things didn't work.

My problem is that my system does not seem to be detecting an external monitor that I have connected. Everything else is working just fine; however, I would like to have the option of attaching an external monitor. When I plug the external monitor into the laptop, the external monitor remains black and appears to be in power save mode. I recently installed Debian, using the amd64 Network Install .iso. I'm using XFCE4 as my desktop environment, and everything is working well... on my laptop's screen.
My desired setup is to have my laptop sitting on a well-ventilated shelf, closed, and to have an external monitor be my main monitor. I want this because I'm using my laptop as my "home" computer, so it never moves, and I don't like the keyboard/trackpad. My laptop has a VGA output, and I can get my desired setup on my Windows partition (not stating a preference ; just that the hardware CAN do what I want it to).
I've been working my way around the Internet for a few days, now, and I've got the commercial NVIDIA driver installed. If I run sudo nvidia-config --twinview I can get my external monitor to be part of the display, which is great, but it's part of a dual-screen monitor setup, which is not what I want at all, because (a) XFCE's multiple virtual desktops are good enough for me and (b) my graphics card is integrated, and I'm trying to squeeze every drop of performance out of my laptop that I can (1 gig of RAM; the less that my graphics card eats into it, the better). Plus, it'd be annoying to accidentally drop something on my laptop's screen, and then have to dig it out of the shelf in order to undo it. I'm not saying that I'm consistently clumsy, but I'd eventually end up doing it.
I'm currently on openSUSE 11.2 and whenever I open my external HDD with Dolphin, it freezes/crashes my desktop .I can't touch anything on my desktop but in the dolphin window everything is fine.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe monitor is a dell 2009 w (16:10 with around 1680x1050 IIRC) I have a fujitsu desktop with the intel core i5 CPU. the crux is the i5 has an integrated GPU. hwinfo says 'clarkdale integrated graphics controller' and yast tells me the same too, knowing the monitor model as well (with correct resolution) So we have an intel GPU ... but the resolution of the kde desktop is always the 1024x768. sax2 do not accept any other resolutions - he knows only threee, one larger at 1280x1024. But even if i try to turn it on he falls back to 1024x768. this is independed from runlevel 3 or 5. the /etx/X11/xorg.conf knows the monitor and the two modes 1024 and 1680 - but everyhwere else it seems that it is unknown, using default vesa mode... the gfx tools seem to ignore the ability of the higher resolution.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSo I've got a weird issue with my usb external drive. It's a generic enclosure in to which I've mounted a toshiba IDE drive. It appears as "Generic USB to IDE bridge".Said drive works fine on every machine I try to use it on, but NOT my laptop. Oh, it will appear in LSUSB, and in dmesg, (sometimes it appears, but the partitions do not, e.g. I see sdc, but not sdc1 and sdc2).
However, on any attempt to access it (it mounts fine too), Dolphin hangs (and so does most of KDE). I assume a disk sleep is the problem. Unplugging the drive resolves the hang. ages later, the drive will copy bits of data in small spurts, until it hangs for some more time. After a while, I see an ACHI/USB reset message in the system logs, and the drive resumes copying for some more time.
The drive is bus powered, but it doesn't matter if I use one/both USB connectors, and like I said, it works fine on my desktop, which also has SuSE 11.4 on it. Any ideas what's going on? Sorry if I left out some info, I wanted to get this out and let you folks stew over it while I'm running some errands.
I have 2 monitors. I'm using the Nvidia driver in Twinview Mode on the right side. I can move the cursor from one monitor to the next and I can drag applications between the two. I have multiple activities. And the second monitor selected one of those other activities as the background. I'm not sure how this was chosen, or if I have a choice. Anyone know? Do activities affect what is displayed in a dual monitor setting? As I toggle through the activities, the two monitors change, but never to the same one.
When I open an application, it's a guessing game which monitor it appears on. Can I control that?
I know if one clicks the top left corner of an application they can send it "To Desktop" ("all", "Desktop 1", "Desktop 2", etc). If I could assign "Desktop 1" to monitor 1, and "Desktop 2" to monitor 2, I could then use the "To Desktop".
At a minimum, how does one control where applications open in a dual monitor setting?

Right now, the netbook has the panels, but the monitor has the desktop. I would like the panels and desktop on the monitor, even if that means not using the netbook screen. I have a screen shot below. I am running F13 with Gnome.
Edit: Never mind. I figured out how to disable the netbook screen using the function keys on the computer.
i have my pc connected to my 24 inch lcd monitor via DVI and my laptop via VGA. i noticed ubuntu is slightly more blurry than the pc. would the difference likely stem from the manner of connection or faulty drivers on ubuntu's behalf?

View 5 Replies View RelatedI am trying to view my pc on my new flat screen but am unsure of the settings. I am using ubuntu 10.10. I have been trying (and on ocassion succesfully, but never really understood what I have done) to view my pc through the monitor option under preferences. Selecting the different monitor size but always find my external monitor (ie TV) is to the left, right above or under the screen I see on my PC. Also I am unable to hear my PC through the TV. I should say this is a good quality flat screen and all I am unsure of are the correct settings to use my TV as an external monitor.

alt + clt + f1 takes the monitor screen to command line but alt + clt + f7 fails to bring it back to GUI. The monitor just freezes!!

My system can't seem to detect the external monitor that I've plugged into my laptop using and HDMI cable. The monitor works when I'm booted into Windows so I know that it isn't a problem with the monitor or the cable.

I installed FC11 on my laptop T43 and the video card is ATI Mobility Radeon x300. Now I have a problem of screen resolution with external monitor:
When I do presentation, I have to mirror the two monitors and both set to 1024*768, which is not perfect.
I remember that when I use RHEL 5 desktop edition, The system can automatically detect the external monitor and set it by itself ----- The laptop uses 1400*1050 and the external monitors such as projector uses 1024*768. But I haven't found such feature on FC11.
Previous Fedora releases allowed me to connect to my external monitor via an HDMI-DVI cable to use as my main monitor from my laptop. However, after I did a fresh install of Fedora 15, I have this problem that when I login to gnome 3, both laptop screen and external monitor go blank. I cannot ctrl-alt-f2 to go to terminal. I end up having to ssh from another machine and reboot. Each time, the reboot doesn't even work since I have to go and kill Xorg before it starts to reboot.plymouth and gdm seem to be fine and show up the external monitor. It is only when I login to gnome3 that I get the blank screens.

When I boot up the system, it uses the integrated monitor (LVDS1) only, and I have to manually manually switch to the external monitor (VGA1) using xrandr.
Is it possible to configure my Xorg (or whatever) so that it uses the VGA1 output if present?
