Ubuntu :: Lucid Openoffice 3.2 Autorecovery Doesn't Activate After Crash

May 24, 2010

using 32 & 64 bit, lucid's openoffice 3.2 autorecovery doesn't activate after crash. 1 upgrade was from hardy to lucid and the other from karmic, regardless neither works. in hardy, after a power out, machine freeze, etc., i would reboot and log in, then ALL OO files that were open would be recovered from the wizard. Now that's gone. Yes, the AutoRecovery save option is set, it just doesn't appear after a crash like it used to.

Ubuntu :: Openoffice.org Causes X To Crash?

Jan 18, 2011

I'm using a ZaReason Terra HD netbook. I have not changed any of the default hardware, nor messed with any of the X or openoffice settings. For almost as long as I've had the computer, I've been getting random X crashes. The screen goes to black, dumps some text, and I'm given a series of options of what to do (low-graphics mode, diagnostics, exit to terminal). From what I've gathered, this only happens when openoffice is running (it can be in the background, it does not have to be the active application).

I really have no idea what to do or what is causing this. I've attached a log, and I will gladly attach whatever else might be useful. I've looked on the internet for help, and while I do see a lot of X and openoffice issues, they seem to be related to higher end hardware than I have. I'm running Ubuntu 10.4, openoffice.org 3.2, and using an Intel Corporation N10 Family Integrated Graphics Controller .

Note: the attached log is a text file, but I made it a .doc because it barely exceeded the file size limit for .txt .

OpenSUSE :: OpenOffice Crash If View Database?

Oct 25, 2010

I have OO.o 3.1.1.4 installed on my SuSE 11.2 system. (It came with it.)I've tried connecting to my older OO.o address book database and it seems to have connected (I get no error messages) but when I try to open the database source from within Writer, or any other OO.o tool (either by pressing F4 or going to View > Data Sources) OpenOffice crashes. I can open my database as an .ods or a .dbf or .odb.When I open it as an .odb, I end up with some sort of form wizard designer. All looks ok, the table is there (and it looks good!) but then what? If I close that wizard, the table then closes with it.

I've also used File > Templates > Address Book Source. After using that, if I hit F4, OOo crashes.My main problem is that OO.o crashes when I try to view the database source from within a document.P.S. I do have Java (Sun's version of Java 1.6.0) installed and OO.o seems to know it's there and is registered.

OpenSUSE :: OpenOffice Crash When Opening Image File?

Jul 16, 2010

I wanted to compose a letter and include photos that are on my other (secondary) hd. When I navigate to the folder that the photo is in, OpenOffice suddenly crashes without warning. Then I have to recover my file. If I insert a photo from my main hd (the one with SuSE 11.2 on it) then there's no problem. Why does it crash when I try to go into my other hard drive? (It gets automatically mounted as /local when I boot into the system). I'm running Open SuSE 11.2 and OpenOffice 3.1.1.4 (from an .rpm)

Ubuntu Multimedia :: OpenOffice Makes Video Refresh And Gnome Crash?

Jun 30, 2010

Since upgrading to Lucid a few days ago I'm having intermittent problems (90% of the time)with opening OpenOffice files.When I open up a spreadsheet (.ods) in OO, (whether OO was already open or not) my screens go black, then flash on and off for 30 seconds (ish) as if trying to change the refresh rate.Sometimes this results in Gnome crashing and restarting itself. it settles down and is OK. On a few occasions I have had to change terminal and manually restart gdm.

Here's my environment;

Dell Latitude D620
nVidia GeForce Go 7300 (according to hwinfo)
Ubuntu Lucid 32-bit (upgraded from Jaunty)
2 GB RAM

I've got the recommended "NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current)" hardware driver and the NVIDIA X Server Settings applet, which says my NVIDIA driver version is 195.36.24. I'm running dual screens (1440x900 and 1280x1024) using TwinView. After a flicker, here is what I find in the Xorg.0.log;

Code:

(II) Jun 30 12:17:42 NVIDIA(0): Setting mode
(II) Jun 30 12:17:42 NVIDIA(0): "CRT:nvidia-auto-select+1440+0,DFP:nvidia-auto-select+0+124"

Ubuntu :: Upgrading OpenOffice In Lucid To 3.2.1?

Aug 9, 2010

I am curious about other's opinions on their experience using the official OpenOffice from their main website, not the one Ubuntu ships with their distro. I was curious about upgrading OpenOffice 3.2.0, which is the latest that comes with Lucid, and found that if you do the following, you can have 3.2.1 on your system, which apparently is a bug fixed release:

Code:

To install OpenOffice 3.2.1 in Ubuntu Lucid:

- Download latest version ('OOo_3.2.1_Linux_x86_install-deb_en-US.tar.gz') from [URL]
- Extract and you'll see a folder called 'OOO320_m18_native_packed-1_en-US.9502'
- Remove the existing version of OpenOffice (3.2.0):
- sudo apt-get remove openoffice*.*

[code]....

So, again, I am wondering about other's experiences doing this, as looking at it, it does look a little different, at least with how it puts itself in the Applications menu, and it seems to run much, much faster. In addition, when removing 'openoffice', it frees up 263mb, whereas the official OpenOffice installation adds barely 200mb. Might there be more the Ubuntu one installs?

Also, another way I've noticed that it might be possible to upgrade would be to install the Maverick repos temporarily and install Ubuntu's OpenOffice 3.2.1 in Lucid that way. Is that a wise alternative?

Ubuntu :: Total System Crash After Attempt To Play An MP3 On Lucid?

May 15, 2010

Today while browsing the web and attempting to listen to a mp3 file on the site of a musician, this laptop with Lucid CRASHED badly! It went into a black screen and the only solution was a reboot! I am not a masochist, but I could repeat the crash a couple of times just to verify it.

This is the worst crash that I have seen on GNU/Linux! I expect things to go down in a more controlled way: maybe first the crash of a plug-in, then the crash of a web browser, eventually the crash of a windows manager. But I don't like seeing that playing an mp3 is leading to kernel crash on what is supposed to be a LTS-release!

Any observations of similar behavior or hints on the cause? Is it possible that the crash is related to intel graphics 85x on this system that are now very problematic on Lucid?

By the way, the music file in question is probably not malformed and plays perfectly on Mac and Windows. I am digging into system logs to try to find any record of the problem. For the the record: I've been around Ubuntu since 5.04, on Linux since 2003, on Unix since 1988, and on computers since 1979.

General :: System Crash Doesn't Save Info To Kern.log

Jul 23, 2010

I am currently creating a usb device driver consisting of mostly read and write commands. It can successfully read/write using the bulk endpoints, however reading from the interrupt endpoint causes a system crash.As the crash happens whilst writing to kern.log, the file doesn't get a chance to close, therefore done of my debug printk calls are saved. Also, I get know response from using the magic sysrq key.

Does anyone have an ideas on how I can get any system information about what's causing the crash, or possible causes of the crash. (Using a usb sniffer running on another pc, I can see that the packet is coming in from the interrupt endpoint).

Ubuntu Installation :: Lucid Doesn't Show Panels On Startup?

May 20, 2010

I have a computer with pentium 3 that i'd like to run ubuntu 10.04 on. I've installed it from a livecd (the cd is fine, because i used that cd to install 10.04 on another machine, and its working perfectly). The installation went fine, and on the first boot everything worked fine as well. but when i tried it again, the computer started but at the desktop there were no panels on the top or bottom, although every thing else was working.

I could use Alt+F2 to run any application that comes preinstalled on the ubuntu cd including the terminal, but i can't access Applications, Places, System, etc.

Everytime at startup during boot there is a message that prints "error: no suitable mode found" "error :unknown command 'terminal'" (without the quotes).

this computer has a bit of a history as i once tried to install linux mint on it but failed because of a bad livecd. the grub got installed wrongly, tried to reinstall xp, didn't work, then ultimately after trying a few other things turned to DBAN, which surprisingly also failed crashing everytime i ran it before completing its erase, which leads me to believe that Dban didn't leave my hard drives in too good a condition. when the ubuntu live cd worked however i was ignited with a brand new spark of hope, and even that now is starting to diminish, is there no hope for my pentium 3.

I have followed identical steps for creating the vpn connection on both machines: vpn connections can be made in 2 ways, the first is through the network manager, but trying to connect through the nm-applet returns an error about vpn failing to connect and "no valid vpn secrets".

I suspect this is at the root of the problem. The only way for my Lucid machine to successfully connect through the command line is if I run the openvpn command under sudo.
