I am using Maverick on a Dell Vostro 3400. I recently installed ConMan network manager and it worked flawlessly in my office and home. I had to travel to Virginina and Pennsylvania and ConMan continued to perform. However, when I returned to my home and office, I could not connect to my WiFi regardless of what I tried. The instructions, from the Web, that I used to install Conman also had uninstalll instructions that promised to return my network manager to its previous state. I uninstalled Conman and have not had any network activity since - no network of any kind. What to do to return to Network Manager?
I'm using kubuntu 9.10 desktop edition as a server and I set the IP statically, what happens is that when I ping it from another machine on the same network, I get intermittent packet loss (up to 80% and sometimes even higher). When I ping any other machine on the local network everything's fine with 0% packet loss. Packets go directly through switch, no router or anything in between.
I suspected wiring issues, but that doesn't seem to be the problem after I changed the wiring. I was connected to wireless and suspected that but no go either. Same thing when I turn wired. I just changed the ethernet card suspecting drivers but that's no good either. Iptables is a cleanslate installation, it's totally empty.
I try to setup a locale network between 10 (Web) Servers (openSuse 11.2), each Server is connected to the internet (eth0) which works fine on all servers.
A 2nd NIC eth1 (1GBit rtl-8169) on each Server is connect to a Switch and should function as a LAN. I installed/configured the 2nd NIC with yast, and than added a route for the local network (192.168.20.0) to use eth1. So far every thing works (ssh for example), but I have a packet loss of 10%-60% (ping) on the local network, and I cant find the reason for the packet loss. I already installed a Debian Lenny on 2 Servers (just to test) but I have the same problem on Debian.
No firewall or any other application is in the way. With tcpdump I could figure out that the packages are send but never show up on the destination server.
I put some more information about how I configured the LAN below. I have not done this my first time and from my experience if something is wrong with the network configuration (wrong routing, firewall in the way, etc.) this usually leads to a packet loss of 100% or the destination is simply not reachable.
The 2nd NIC is installed with either yast on suse , or by editing /etc/network/interfaces on debian. The Kernel module rtl8169 is loaded.
I have problems with my network speed when i ping my proxy server I end up getting a high packet loss generally more than 30%.I have tried to use various network monitoring softwares like etherape, wireshark, tcpdump but I am not able to get to the bottom of the problem.basically I am trying to find out where the lost packets are going.
I had been playing around with wpa_supplicant, iwconfig and dhcpcd to get an x-less internet connection. However, this seems to have broken my Internet connection. I have reverted my wpa_supplicant settings, but every time I change networks, I must manually run
Code:
$ sudo /sbin/dhcpcd wlan0
in order to get a connection. Unfortunately, this sometimes results in
Code:
err, wlan0: timed out warn, wlan0: using IPV4LL address ###.###.###.###
Using KDE 4.6 on openSUSE 11.4 32-bit. I want KNetworkManager to just automatically work.
I have been having this problem for about two weeks now where Debian's network and internet connection randomly fails. It works perfectly fine and hosts all the services I need for a while, and then without warning all network connectivity fails. I can't ping any other network device. Regardless of how much I try to fix it, the only thing that works is restarting the computer. First, the server went 7 days without a problem; then 5 days; now it lasted 2 days. Judging from my Teamspeak server logs, it crashed today at 12:31. I grep'd through my log files and found this information:
I cannot uninstall Firefox, nor can I uninstall Chromium; one always stays if the other is uninstalled. For example, if I remove Firefox, Chromium will appear in its place and vice versa. This has got to be one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen on Ubuntu! So, how can I uninstall both web browsers?
Ubuntu 10.4 on desktop system. i have installed ubuntu server 64bit with lamp so all in one (apache, mysql and php) and i need to downgrade mysql because of serious problems with mysql 5.1 and this is the only solution. But i need to be working with apatche and php also and have my.ini like i have now (can backup it) so is there any save way to do that?
I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 jaunty.I want to install Ubuntu 9.10 from the cd but I dont want softwares that I installed to be lost.what should I do?(It's the matter of time, internet speed and internet traffic limits)
I just installed 9.10 Karmic Koala and everything was kosher. I installed Amarok and the libxine plugins etc and was getting sound and able to play my mp3s, I let the update manager run and voila now without any sound. Machine is a gateway desktop using Realtek High Definition Audio.
I have a new Toshiba Satellite L450, and decided to run Ubuntu, which is new to me. I am running a 64 bit Karmic, and there is no driver that works. So, to make a long story short: a friend helped me get a driver on my Desktop, namely: rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0100.1012.2009_64bit.tar.gz We had it working, but when I let in the first large batch up updates, it kicked the driver out. I found instructions, installed it again. I let in the next updates, and it kicked out again, and this time the instructions don't work. So, I have two sets of questions:
1. Will updates always undo my wireless? Are there certain updates I should avoid if I want the wireless to stay up and running? (I just assumed the thing to do is just get the updates -- though I am guilty of having no idea what they were about.)
2. Did the updates cause one of my instrucitons to no longer work, or need to be modified?
They were as follows:
sudo apt-get install build-essential cd ~/Desktop sudo tar -xvzf rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0100.1012.2009_64bit.tar.gz That 'sudo tar -xvzf...' operation is the one that stops me. Is there something to change in that line? It goes on: cd rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0100.1012.2009_64bit
[Code]...
this worked the first time I tried it. I posted this earlier under 'hardware', and do not know how to get that post off, so I typed it here once I realized.
Today, I was upgrading my desktop from Jaunty to Karmic (a little behind schedule, I know). All packages downloaded successfully, and then the computer began the process of applying all of the updates. During this period, at some point, it lost power. Now, of course, it won't boot.
Fortunately, I have a separate /home/ partition, and it was unmounted during the upgrade process. So, my personal data and settings are fine. But the OS is useless.
I'm guessing that I'm completely buggered here, and there is nothing that I can do except re-format the Ubuntu partition and clean install Karmic from an install disk.
I am just starting my adventure into Ubuntu. After installing and configuring Shrew Soft in Ubuntu 10.04 64Bit, I am having some serious packet loss issues. The LAN is wireless, however the only packet loss I experience is over the tunnels. I have tried different algorithms, and it seems as I fiddle with the MTU client side, it clears a bit, but the best I have managed is 23% loss average.
I would like to create lossless backups of my DVDs, or more exactly the main movie including one or more audio tracks and a subtitle of my choice. I would like to have the subtitle burned into the movie so that I only have one file (container). No, I don't want a complete DVD folder (TS_Video and other stuff) nor do I want to create an iso file of the DVD. Is it possible? The way I see it there should be two options:
1. Extract the wanted audio track/tracks, one subtitle and the main movie. Keep the audio track/tracks and the movie track in their original formats, and put it all together in one file/container (subtitle burnt in). In theory it should work! I know the video tracks are mostly MPEG2 and the audio tracks mostly AC-3 or DTS.
2. Do almost exactly as above, but before putting it all together compress the video and audio tracks even further to some lossless formats. In theory this should work too! In some other forum a guy told me that since MPEG2 and AC-3/DTS are already compressed formats it probably isn't possible to compress audio and video much further without losses, which is probably true.
Is it possible to do what I want to do? How? If this process is not easy to do it would be nice if some of the skilled guys would create an application that does exactly this. I believe more than me would find it extremely useful.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on the laptop and it looks pretty good. I currently run 9.10 on the main desktop and would like to upgrade to 10.04, by pressing "upgrade" in the update manager, but I have some questions before I do, namely about data loss.
If I upgrade, will stuff like Thunderbird keep my emails, FF keep its profile (cookies, bookmarks, addons etc..), the documents keep all the documents, I have an apache server installed with a few websites - will they still be there after an upgrade? I also have a virtual machine with windoze on, what about all the stuff in there and VMware itself?
Or, will I need to back everything up onto an external hard drive (not sure how to backup Thunderbird and FF), and then reinstall everything, and transfer all the documents, websites etc.. back over again??
how can I install 10.04 over 7.04 (which is partitioned with XP) which I want to retain WITHOUT over writing XP and WITHOUT losing my data files stored in 7.04?
I use a large monitor and often have 2-3 apps open. My biggest complaint about Unity is the loss of menus on each window. Switching apps and choosing menus causes lots of extra motion and requires more concentration. This is not exactly a killer but is a nuisance. Is there an option to keep the menus with the windows? I notice that if an app is started with sudo (e.g. $ sudo nautilus) then the menus stay with the window. Is there a way to make all apps behave this way? If not, why not add this?
I see a huge performance loss in compiz in 11.04 with two event:1.Switching workspace2.Resize windowFor the workspace, by switching very fast form workspace to another, frame per second depend by the number of window:
I switched to Ubuntu from Windows a few months ago and have had it all working fine since.
I turned on my system today and did some updates, then restarted but after the boot selection screen which I cant use as I have a USB keyboard the screen went to that purple/pink colour and froze for ages. Eventually my desktop appeared so I tried restarting it again and the same thing happened. Before from the boot selection to my desktop would only take 5 seconds or so but now it takes about 3 minutes.
Also since the updates I can't connect to my wireless network. I was using the Windows Wireless Networks software from the Ubuntu Software Centre, now when I try opening it manually it just hangs. I tried removing it and reinstalling it but still no joy.
I may have been too trusting with the updates so didn't read the list, I just updated and restarted and thats when the problems started.
I'm not quite sure what information you need but here are the bits from the System Monitor:
Release 11.04(natty) Kernel Linux 2.6.38-8-generic GNOME 2.32.1
On windows I would have considered myself an intermediate user but since switching to Ubuntu I feel like a beginner again although im learning fast.
I adjusted my routes to use my ppp1 (VPN) connection for almost all browsing. Have I misconfigured something.? Some more background information: My VPN is about halfway around the world from where I am / my PPPoE connection. I've already changed my DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf to Google's 8.8.8.8.I get around 2 kBps on Ubuntu and 50 kBps on Windows using the same VPN. =/
I have some boxes and laptops connected to the same lan. While messing around with xorg.conf and doing a couple of restarts, one of the boxes suddenly lost internet access. The other machines can ping each other and access the internet (the boxes through eth0 and the laptops through wlan0). That one box, however, cannot ping the others, nor the router. Both ends of the internet cable are plugged in, and there are the usual continuous green and orange lights on the box end, telling me that everything is fine with the hardware connection.ifconfig gives me:
lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask: 255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
[code]..
I have no idea what happened, since the lights indicate it is not a hardware problem. It must be a problem with that particular machine, since the others are fine. However, I have not changed any of the network config files.
Loss of internet connection after upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 Like the title says, I lost my internet connection after upgrading my Ubuntu system from 8.04 to 8.10.I used the downloaded automated method. It appeared to work fine on its initial reboot into 8.10. But I noticed the internet icon indicated loss of connection. Even so, I was still able to browse the net through Firefox. But then when I rebooted the next day the opposite was true: the connection icon indicated connection, but Firefox would not actually connect, nor would update manager. It has been like this since. This is a dual boot machine, and the Windows XP Pro side still connects to the internet as usual, no problems. So how can I make my new 8.10 system connect to the internet?
I have a hp dv3 laptop which dual boots Win7 and Ubuntu 9.1 64 bit. I have no issues with my wireless adapter in Win7, but I lose connection after a couple of hours in Ubuntu. When connection is lost it is not possible to view any wireless signals, the adapter is basically turned off. The only way to restore the connection is to reboot, then Ubuntu will again automatically connect to my WP2 encrypted router. My wireless adapter is a AR928X made by Atheros.
For most of today I had my internet connection dropping out on me intermittently. I assumed it was a provider issue, as it has been unreliable in the past. After it dropped out for good, and I could not print through network, I realised it was not a provider issue. All the other computers in the house were connected, including another ubuntu box. Only the MacBook Pro 5,5 was not able to connect. The network manager indicated I was connected to the network, throughout the whole time.
A number of restarts with the kernel I normally use (2.6.31-19) including one in recovery mode, yielded no change, but a restart with the 2.6.31-20 kernel resulted in connectivity. Finally, perhaps by chance, wireless started to work again on the 2.6.31-19 kernel, after I once booted into the Mac OS, and then back into Karmic. How I might go about diagnosing, obviously in hindsight, what happened? I suppose I should look in the log files, but I have no idea where exactly, and what to look for.
I got a new X201 which is running Ubuntu 10.04. While at home, everything is fine, at work, I encounter some issues with wireless. the signal cuts in and out repeatedly. Here's the output of ping. I set it to ping a server every 90 seconds, 10 times. So this is a snapshot of 15 minutes of network activity...
Code:
PING (REDACTED) bytes of data. 64 bytes from (REDACTED): icmp_seq=1 ttl=252 time=1.50 ms 64 bytes from (REDACTED): icmp_seq=2 ttl=252 time=2.13 ms 64 bytes from (REDACTED): icmp_seq=3 ttl=252 time=1.38 ms
[code]....
Also I tried this (from a 2 year old thread which was most relevant solution I could find):
Code:
Changing AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=1 to AVAHI_DAEMON_DETECT_LOCAL=0 in /etc/default/avahi-daemon has got rid of the irritating pop-up. Basically, every 5 minutes or so, for a solid 60 seconds or so I get no signal. I've tried updating the kernel, and doing apt-get remove avant-daemon, but still have problems.
We've had a headless server running Ubuntu for a few weeks now and it's been fantastic - we've been able to access it from all of our computers and it's making life so much easier having one central box to put everything in. Until yesterday, where we noticed that some directories on the 1TB HDD were empty that were previously full of files. Restarted and the directories are gone, leaving only the root directories. Restarted again and Ubuntu doesn't even recognise the disk.
We have Ubuntu installed on a 250GB HDD with the 1TB hard drive mounted on (as?) /srv and all of the data is on there. Before Ubuntu stopped recognising the disk it would appear in Disk Utility saying that the file system was corrupted and that there was an issue with the superblock - I've found some ways of attempting to fix that but none are working now that Ubuntu isn't able to find the disk. I've checked the physical connections and they all appear to be working fine. I can hear/feel the hard disk spinning. Some users haven't backed up the files they put on the server so I'd prefer to try anything non-destructive first and save their work. I'm hoping that the HDD hasn't totally died... but now that Ubuntu can't see it I'm concerned that that might be the case.
