Ubuntu :: Sudden Loss Of Eth0 Connectivity
Dec 7, 2010
I have some boxes and laptops connected to the same lan. While messing around with xorg.conf and doing a couple of restarts, one of the boxes suddenly lost internet access. The other machines can ping each other and access the internet (the boxes through eth0 and the laptops through wlan0). That one box, however, cannot ping the others, nor the router. Both ends of the internet cable are plugged in, and there are the usual continuous green and orange lights on the box end, telling me that everything is fine with the hardware connection.ifconfig gives me:
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask: 255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
[code]..
I have no idea what happened, since the lights indicate it is not a hardware problem. It must be a problem with that particular machine, since the others are fine. However, I have not changed any of the network config files.

For most of today I had my internet connection dropping out on me intermittently. I assumed it was a provider issue, as it has been unreliable in the past. After it dropped out for good, and I could not print through network, I realised it was not a provider issue. All the other computers in the house were connected, including another ubuntu box. Only the MacBook Pro 5,5 was not able to connect. The network manager indicated I was connected to the network, throughout the whole time.
A number of restarts with the kernel I normally use (2.6.31-19) including one in recovery mode, yielded no change, but a restart with the 2.6.31-20 kernel resulted in connectivity. Finally, perhaps by chance, wireless started to work again on the 2.6.31-19 kernel, after I once booted into the Mac OS, and then back into Karmic. How I might go about diagnosing, obviously in hindsight, what happened? I suppose I should look in the log files, but I have no idea where exactly, and what to look for.

I have a laptop running slackware-current. The disk is /dev/sda and the root 'sda1' is xfs formatted (there is also linux swap at sda2).
recently I was trying to setup openvpn and had to copy a folder with configuration files from /usr/doc/openvpn_<version>/easy-rsa to /etc/openvpn.
I am sure the copying completed cause I got a prompt, but a few seconds later the battery died on me. When I got mains and powered it up, I could see the directory I copied under /etc/openvpn, and the files where all there too. but they all contained nothing. i.e. they had a size of 0.
I read [URL] Fthat an external journal filesystem for root is not supported. I am not sure If it applies to my situation though. As in does it use an internal journal instead?
and the bottom line is: shouldn't the copying have completed successfully? shouldn't I be worried, that this copy failed?

I am running Linux Mint Isadora 9 and recently installed a wireless USB adapter. After installing RT3070 drivers for my RT2070 card I got everything working and life was good. Now, all of the sudden I am having a world of problems connecting to the internet. I can connect to my AP fine, but I cannot access the internet. If I attempt to ping my AP by IP address I get severe packet loss. I cannot ping my AP by url [URL] at all so Im guessing there are some DNS issues as well.

The problem is I have a wireless Belkin router which I can connect to, but after being connected for a few minutes the net disappears (cuts from the router) and my laptop will have to reconnect again to the router for internet to work again. After a few minutes (or seconds in some cases) the connectivity loss will happen again over an over.
How to fix this problem or some things I can try, I've tried updating to two different firmwares, two different channels and resetting the router. The biggest problem I find is that this happens on both my laptop, another laptop in the house and also my tablet PC but doesn't happen on two other laptops in the house, I've also tested with windows 7 and Ubuntu with my laptop.
My laptop wireless card is Atheros AR9285 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter

Wife's laptop has AR5001 Wireless Adapter laptop model is Toshiba Satellite A215
Problem : Wireless networking randomly loses connectivity and can not regain connectivity, the only apparent solution is a full power down , this is not even certain to work. The card works under Windows, she hates Windows. (I love her for this) I know it's not faulty hardware , because it will work for days on end under Windows without problems.
Things I've tried : madwifi drivers (any and all versions available) : These increase stability of the signal and seem to delay the inevitable however it still happens. When using these drivers the only option is to unload them modprobe -r then reboot then remove them again and re add them. It makes no sense why this works, and if I don't remove them prior to rebooting it will not work.
ATH5K drivers : These are pretty much junk, results are unpredictable at best, sometimes it will work perfectly for a few hours, sometimes it will not work at all. Nothing is repeatable, I can't seem to force whatever condition is causing this. rfkill does not show the wifi being blocked (hard or soft), unblocking it anyway does nothing, only way to make this work and it's iffy is to fully power down wait 5-10 minutes turn it back on and it MAY decide to work.
Firmware update : Updated the Toshiba BIOS to the latest version of the firmware 2.0 no joy here either. Same issue both sets of drivers.
Tried different distros and kernels : I've tried Mint 9, 10 ,11 ; Ubuntu 10.10, 10.04 , 9.10 and 11.04 (which is currently installed) , Fedora and OpenSUSE. All are giving the same problems. I have also tried a slew of different kernels no joy from any of them (I'm not at the computer with the issue now I will post exactly what kernel versions I've used when I have access to the machine).
Another useful bit of information, the hard switch to disable/enable wifi WILL disable it but turning it back on does absolutely nothing. The hotkey does nothing at all. The bios does not have an option to disable or enable the wireless card.
I will also post the typical lsmod , lspci , iwconfig all that good stuff when I get back to the computer in question. I'm probably just going to buy a PC card for it and give up on that one, but this is driving me insane and I would really like to see it resolved even if I do replace the hardware.

If I uncheck and recheck "Enable Networking" in the Network Manager Applet 0.7.996 I would expect the wired network to disconnect (which it does) and reconnect (which it does NOT). So I tried sudo ifdown eth0 and got
Quote:
Ignoring unknown interface eth0=eth0.
ifconfig tells me
Quote:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:25:64:e8:18:2c
inet addr:192.168.0.112 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
inet6 addr: fe80::225:64ff:fee8:182c/64 Scope:Link
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
[code]....
so I am at a loss. How do I stop and restart the network interface short of rebooting the machine?

5.10 Breezy configured as machine controller. Works great eth0 is a fixed IP to communicate with controller comms board. Not easy at all to alter - the comms board is hard coded to listen on eth0 for commands.
I can use eth1 as the default gateway and ping google.com, etc. But when I now attempt to communicate with the controller with netcat, e.g.
Code: echo !HH | nc 192.168.1.6 80
I obviously never get an answer since the request is passed via eth1. Using the -g option with netcat doesn't work either. I had a look at iptables but it doesn't seem to be able to do what I want. How I can still use eth0 as my communication port to the controller whilst eth1 is the default gateway?

I have two servers on a vlan at my datacentre/colocation and previously both servers had public IPs on their eth0 interfaces. The servers are HP ProLiant DL360s - one is a G4 and one is a G5 The newer G5 is now the LAMP server and the G4 has been retired and I want to repurpose it as an iSCSI target using openfiler freenas or similar.
My G5 has public/static IPs lashed to the eth0 physical interface and the eth1 is not configured to do anything yet. The G4 will have both interfaces available - perhaps one for ssh access from one of my static public IPs and the other to be a private IP on the local vlan. Here is what I am trying to get my head around...
The G5
eth0 - Public IP - full LAMP services on two or three virtual interfaces
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.1
The G4
eth0 - Public IP for ssh
eth1 - Private IP 192.168.0.2
Because my traffic between eth1 on these boxes is via private IPs on the local private vlan it doesn't add to my quota for bandwidth. How do I go about configuring the routing and gateways and other aspects of this so that I can run a private IP space network between the eth1s and still serve the outside world from the eth0s...
I am afraid that if I assign the private IPs to the eth1 interfaces the routing may either not work or interfere with the access to the production internet facing interfaces (eth0s).

On my machine (Desktop PC) I have 2 network card : wireless (rt61 802.11) and a wired card (BCM44). When I install debian 5.
The wired card is detected and logical name eth0 is assigned, while wireless is not assigned I install firmeware* software to configure the card. It is done in some way ( I used mnetwork from mepis, it works fine).
Now the problem: eth0 disapears, and no eth0 inteface found? ifconfig gives just wlan0.
Question: Why there is no eth0, it was before configuration of wlan0 ?
How to active again eth0, or ho to create the logical eth0?

I'm running a dual boot Ubuntu 10.04/Backtrack 4 (Ubuntu 8.10) system. I can get internet in the BT4 side but not in the Lucid side. In Lucid I can ping my router, and the network manager says I'm good to go, but I can't get to any web sites. It all started when I tried to put my laptop on another network by mimicking the settings of a computer I had just unplugged from the network. MAC address and all.

On one of our Lucid systems, we encounter frequent automatic log-offs - without recognizing any reason: The only common fact appears to be at least one further user being logged in (with graphic desktop). With no advance warning, the active user's screen first goes black, shortly after that, the KDM log-in screen (with the name of the automatically logged-off user) appears. Where the currently active user is lucky, it is not his own name and he can simply switch back to his desktop...Something in fact appears to crash: Programs that were running for the automatically logged-off user are obviously simply killed. (OOo next time starts with rebuilding lost documents, KMail forgets about currently edited eMails.)

I've noticed a strange pattern with my 10.04 ubuntu x64 install with 2 GB RAM. Suppose I'm using about 1 to 1.5 GB RAM (normal). Over a timespan of several minutes RAM usage will gradually & steadily creep upwards, until for no apparent reason the system will shed ~500MB in a couple seconds, & then this process will repeat itself indefinitely.

My brothers computer uses Ubuntu. All of a sudden the internet stopped working. So I did some research online and found a site that looked like it would work because the comments were good. I did what it said by removing the network manager and then i had to re-install it blah blah blah. Long story short his computer is still without internet. I tried to download the network manager on my computer and install it on his computer. I dont think it worked. If anyone could help me find the correct network manager to download for his computer and then help me get internet back onto his computer.
