Ubuntu :: Unity - Loss Of Menus On Each Window
May 4, 2011
I use a large monitor and often have 2-3 apps open. My biggest complaint about Unity is the loss of menus on each window. Switching apps and choosing menus causes lots of extra motion and requires more concentration. This is not exactly a killer but is a nuisance. Is there an option to keep the menus with the windows? I notice that if an app is started with sudo (e.g. $ sudo nautilus) then the menus stay with the window. Is there a way to make all apps behave this way? If not, why not add this?

I was wondering if anyone knows a way to change the number of icons which appear in the Applications menu and the Files & Folders menu (the menus which pop up when you click those buttons in the launcher)?
At the moment I can see at most 6 favourite folder icons, for example, and any more than that cannot be displayed (it just says "see X more results..."). I'd find it much more convenient if it would simply display two rows of 6 icons each.
Does anyone know if it's possible to configure it to have that behaviour?

When Unity is disabled, you can delete a bookmark from Firefox by right-clicking on the bookmark, under the bookmark menu, on the Firefox menu bar. When Unity is enabled, you cannot delete a bookmark from Firefox by right-clicking on the bookmark, since a right-click behaves the same way a left-click does. In other words, there doesn't appear to be any context menus.I reverted to the so-called "Classic desktop." There are other aspects about Unity I take issue with, but I will not go into them here.
If the Unity desktop is to be the default desktop for Ubuntu, then it must retain, at a minimum, mind you, the same functionality that was provided by the prior desktop. Access to an application's context menus is one functionality I see no good reason to forgo.

I have been running the 10.10 Netbook version for about 3 weeks, as as a dual boot with Windows XP on an MSI Wind netbook primarily with an external monitor (and the netbook monitor off). Because I am using an external monitor, I'd like to get more of a full desktop experience. However, when I read on the forum how to get Gnome desktop workin, or even the desktop-switcher utility, I think there is something wrong with my installation.
I have the unity launcher on the left, which does not appear to have any easy way to add items. I have the bar across the top, which has the logout/logoff/shutdown button, clock and a few icons (bluetooth, network, etc.) on the right. On the far left, I have an icon that brings up the "Microsoft Bob"-like menu (Web, Music, Photos, Games, etc.). I don't have any menu (System, Applications, etc.). When I logout, I have no option to log in using gnome desktop.
Why don't I have many of these options, that other users describe? What is the best way for me to get the full gnome desktop? When I go into synaptic and search for gnome desktop, dozens of items come up, including many that are marked as installed.

So instead of risking a borked upgrade, while wanting to try something new, I installed Unity (from a guide somewhere) and Gnome-Shell from Ubuntu Tweak.Well they installed and run fine. The problem is this: Many pop-up menus, right-click menus and volume icons and such are warped and deformed. There is a diagonal line running through the box and the text is all slanted and "wrapped around" this diagonal.

I recently upgraded an openSUSE 11.3 install to 11.4 by downloading the DVD, burning it, & chosing the upgrade option upon booting to it. I used all the upgrade defaults. Upon coming back up, I added the FreeNX zypper repository & installed the latest FreeNX. Connecting via FreeNX works, but I'm not able to see any window menus on any of my applications. They get stuck to the top left corner of the screen &/or they don't have the window border surrounding the window (as in the top bar that contains the minimize/maximize buttons).

I am using Unity 2D in a dated fujitsu sieamens laptop. I appreciate the speed and the responsiveness, but seriously... three clicks to pick a window? When you have 2 windows from the same app in different workspaces: When you have more than a window from a single application open in Unity 3D, you click on the app's icon in the launcher, and it will "scale" all the windows from the same app for you to choose. 2 clicks...
In 2D, click on the launcher, launches expo, showing all the windows, you choose the workspace containing the window you wanna go to, it zooms a little but (useless) sin the content of the windows is does not get rendered, then you click again and you are finally in your window... really..when you need to move through windows quickly this get painful. My suggestion is to remove the zooming "preview" part since it does not render the content of the windows, making itself useless.

I've upgraded to 11.04 and found out unity has no desktop window selector at all. After a quick google search it turned out that clicking the Ubuntu icon on the top left corner should bring out some kind of expo-like style selector but that turned out not to be the case for me.
This is all that happens when I click the icon:
Doesn't matter how many windows are open.
Is this some upgrade related error or am I missing something?

I've managed to completely ruin my system for like the millionth time.
Basically my story is this. I cannot seem to run both unity and a window manager/decorator at the same time. Perhaps it is partially because I am not entirely sure what the current window manager is these days.
I thought it was metacity since that has been the default in the past. I ran a code...
I would really like to be able to move windows. I am typing this from my web browser which is permanently stuck in the position it launched in on my screen.

Using Natty 11.04. Often when maximizing an application from the launcher or opening them from the indicator area the application will have focus but will be behind the application I had open before. So if I would then close the window I see I actually close the application I had just opened as the menu area is for the new application.Example.
I am browsing using Firefox. I open X-Chat from the indicator area. I still see Firefox. I decide to close Firefox (or minimize) to get to X-Chat. All I end up in doing is closing (or minimizing) X-Chat because it had focus, the menu at the top was for X-Chat and not Firefox. This has had me launch and close many applications in error. The annoyance factor for this is ten.(Searched the forum but not being sure what the best search words for this issue would be I didn't find anything relevant)

I'm currently running Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity. I have a recurring and irritating problem- sometimes when I switch windows using alt+tab, normally when the window that I have switched to is maximised, the window does not get re-painted until it has been resized. The window doesn't "freeze" as such as it still responds to keyboard and mouse events, but it doesn't appear to respond until it is resized.

While I think Unity has its many ups and downs, I found it usable enough to choose it as my default desktop, after some customization. Somewhere in tweaking the desktop with ccsm - or elsewhere - I did something boneheaded. Now when a new window opens at the top of the screen, its title bar is hidden under the Unity panel. I could just wipe everything out and start over, but I kinda like the way things work on my desktop - with this exception. Where I might look to figure out what is letting windows be placed all the way up under the panel.
I did try creating a new account and looking at ccsm config export and comparing it to mine, but did not see anything useful. The only thing I changed with respect to window placement/handling, AFAIK, is disabling maximization at the top of the screen (in 'Grid' module); restoring that did not help. The problem turns out to be caused by using a window type 'panel' in my conky config. Changing the window type to 'desktop' cured the problem. Did not dive any deeper to analyse exactly what conky 'panel' windows do to interfere with Compiz/Unity.

Like, if I drag a window to the top of the screen, somehow this is supposed to mean I want the window full screen. Screw that if I wanted it full screen I'd have clicked the button on the top of the menu. Windows 7 does this too and it just as annoying.

Every so often a strange window will appear on the screen - well, I say "appear", but it can't be seen. I know it's there though. It creates a sort of 'dead zone' on the screen - always in the same place.

Is there any way to prevent the Unity Launcher from auto hiding as I maximise a window? It takes a few seconds for the launcher to reappear when I point the cursor in the left corner of the screen which is a bit of a delay when I quickly want to multitask between multiple applications.

So I was fooling around with compiz settings manager and was trying to get the cube to rotate around, and by doing so I disabled some plugins (because I was prompted to do so) and now Unity is gone and everything opens in the upper left hand corner so much so that I can't move the window. It was pretty rash for me just to disable plugins, how to get everything back to normal.

1. I didn't like the icon theme and changed it to Ubuntu Mono Light. But is there a way to get the Min/Max/Close buttons to how they are in Radiance when maximized, or is that dependant on something else?
2. Is there a way to disable the Unity dock, but not the Unity feature where the Min/Max/Close go into the command bar?

Just moved to Ubuntu 11.04 with unity and only have one problem...For most of my desktop needs I prefer to have the Unity Launcher up all the time (fullscreen apps don't cover it), and have set this option with ccsm.
However, when I watch mythtv, it is also under the launcher (and the top panel as well). How can I force mythtv to cover the launcher?
What I really need is a keyboard shortcut to hide the launcher, but the only shortcut is for "show launcher". (I guess the devs assumed everyone would want it hidden by default).
This, by the way is not my usual way for viewing mythtv. I have a projector attached to the desktop PC and it doesn't get a Unity Launcher by default (in Twinview), so no probs. However, occasionally I want to watch something on my computer screen, and that is when this issue arises.

I have a new Toshiba Satellite L450, and decided to run Ubuntu, which is new to me. I am running a 64 bit Karmic, and there is no driver that works. So, to make a long story short: a friend helped me get a driver on my Desktop, namely: rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0100.1012.2009_64bit.tar.gz We had it working, but when I let in the first large batch up updates, it kicked the driver out. I found instructions, installed it again. I let in the next updates, and it kicked out again, and this time the instructions don't work. So, I have two sets of questions:
1. Will updates always undo my wireless? Are there certain updates I should avoid if I want the wireless to stay up and running? (I just assumed the thing to do is just get the updates -- though I am guilty of having no idea what they were about.)
2. Did the updates cause one of my instrucitons to no longer work, or need to be modified?
They were as follows:
sudo apt-get install build-essential
cd ~/Desktop
sudo tar -xvzf rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0100.1012.2009_64bit.tar.gz
That 'sudo tar -xvzf...' operation is the one that stops me. Is there something to change in that line? It goes on:
cd rtl8192se_linux_2.6.0100.1012.2009_64bit
[Code]...
this worked the first time I tried it. I posted this earlier under 'hardware', and do not know how to get that post off, so I typed it here once I realized.

Today, I was upgrading my desktop from Jaunty to Karmic (a little behind schedule, I know). All packages downloaded successfully, and then the computer began the process of applying all of the updates. During this period, at some point, it lost power. Now, of course, it won't boot.
Fortunately, I have a separate /home/ partition, and it was unmounted during the upgrade process. So, my personal data and settings are fine. But the OS is useless.
I'm guessing that I'm completely buggered here, and there is nothing that I can do except re-format the Ubuntu partition and clean install Karmic from an install disk.

I am just starting my adventure into Ubuntu. After installing and configuring Shrew Soft in Ubuntu 10.04 64Bit, I am having some serious packet loss issues. The LAN is wireless, however the only packet loss I experience is over the tunnels. I have tried different algorithms, and it seems as I fiddle with the MTU client side, it clears a bit, but the best I have managed is 23% loss average.

I would like to create lossless backups of my DVDs, or more exactly the main movie including one or more audio tracks and a subtitle of my choice. I would like to have the subtitle burned into the movie so that I only have one file (container). No, I don't want a complete DVD folder (TS_Video and other stuff) nor do I want to create an iso file of the DVD. Is it possible? The way I see it there should be two options:
1. Extract the wanted audio track/tracks, one subtitle and the main movie. Keep the audio track/tracks and the movie track in their original formats, and put it all together in one file/container (subtitle burnt in). In theory it should work! I know the video tracks are mostly MPEG2 and the audio tracks mostly AC-3 or DTS.
2. Do almost exactly as above, but before putting it all together compress the video and audio tracks even further to some lossless formats. In theory this should work too! In some other forum a guy told me that since MPEG2 and AC-3/DTS are already compressed formats it probably isn't possible to compress audio and video much further without losses, which is probably true.
Is it possible to do what I want to do? How? If this process is not easy to do it would be nice if some of the skilled guys would create an application that does exactly this. I believe more than me would find it extremely useful.
