Networking :: Huge Packet Loss On A Gigabit Link ?

Dec 28, 2010

I have a following configuration: 4 PCs (say, A, B, C and D), running Ubuntu or Debian, interconnected using a gigabit switch, which is connected to the Internet. Two machines (say, A and B) also have a direct private connection between them (provided by another pair of NICs).

Now, when I test the connection performance with iperf, the results vary. The private connection between A and B performs well - about 930Mbps using iperf's UDP test. Between C and D it is about 800Mbps which I find tolerable. Packet loss when running these tests is negligible.

However, when I run iperf between any of {A,B} and {C,D}, the performance significantly drops as there is a huge number of lost packets.

For example, here is the result of testing between A and C:

Why is there such a large number of packets which are generated, but lost somewhere?

A<->B private link works fine, so system level parameters on both A and B are correct. Furthermore, C<->D works ok, so I guess I shouldn't blame the switch.

Is there a per-NIC configuration that I should check or it smells like a hw problem? Problematic NICs on both A and B are of the same type - Allied Telesyn AT2916T.

Ubuntu :: Tried Playing DVD In Movie Player / It Froze Up / Huge Loss In Free Disk Space

Feb 28, 2010

I tried playing a DVD several times and each time, after opening in Movie Player on Ubuntu 9.10, it froze up, I forced quit and then I noticed a huge reduction in free disk space on my root (/) directory. Has this happened to anyone else?I figure I Movie Player probably saved some temp files somewhere on hard disk and wasn't able to clean them up since I had to force quit. Any thoughts about how to clean this up and take back that previously free space?

Ubuntu :: Huge Performance Decrease On Battery Power

Oct 23, 2010

I'm having a huge performance decrease when I'm on Battery Power. Plugged in this thing runs AMAZING, HDMI with HD video, I can run compiz 3d, full desktop advanced effects, HD video from ....., you name it. Just when I pull the cable out it slows down. I tried disabling ATI powerplay but that didnt help.

Is there a way I can toggle the performance, so that I can get "plugged in level performance" even when i'm on battery power? I'm not too bothered about how long the battery lasts. I'm usually always near an outlet.

Slackware :: Performance Loss Since Upgrade To 13.1?

Jun 16, 2010

Since I upgraded to Slackware64 13.1 my system feels slower than before (Slackware64 13.0).I paid attention to the documentation (changes_and_hints.txt, readmes etc.) regarding the update. The only thing I changed is, that I used the KDE-4.4.4 packages of AlienBob instead of the KDE-4.4.3 packages of Slackware.

But since AlienBob at his blog wrote, "Although it seems (by looking at the changelog between 4.4.3 and 4.4.4) that there were no spectacular updates in the latest stable KDE Software Compilation, I got some feedback that 4.4.4 does feel snappier than the 4.4.3 which is part of Slackware 13.1.", I thought it would be a good idea to use these packages.

I also recognized a few crashes in KDE, which I didn't have before so often. Therefore I moved the .kde to .kde_bak and configured kde new. This improved the behaviour regarding the crashes, but it still seems not that stable to me like the KDE 4.2 in Slackware64 13.0.Did anyone recognize similar problems after the upgrade, or can give some hints how to solve it?

General :: Run Firefox Jailed Without Serious Performance Loss?

Feb 20, 2011

My Firefox configuration is tricky:

Firefox runs at separate restricted user account which cannot connect to main X server.

Firefox uses Xvfb (virtual "headless" X server) as X server.

x11vnc is running on that Xvfb.

On the main X server there is vncviewer running that connect to this x11vnc

On powerful laptop (Acer Extensa 5220) it seems to work more or less well, but on "Acer Aspire One" netbook it is slowish (on a background that firefox is loaded with lots of extensions). How to optimise this scheme? Requirements:

Browser cannot connect to main X server.

Browser should be in chroot jail (no "suid" scripts, readonly for many things)

Browser should have a lot of features (like in AutoPager, NoScript, WoT, AdBlockPlus)

Ubuntu Networking :: Very Poor Wireless Performance - Packet Loss

Aug 5, 2011

I have ubuntu lucid running on Dell 230 PC, linksys WPN600 N wireless PCI network card connecting to a Cisco E3000 dual channel router.

Kernel: 2.6.32-33-generic
Installed Ralink driver v2.4.0.0

iwconfig shows that the bit rate is 130Mb/s and link quality is 98/100. I'm using the wcid network manager instead of defaul gnome one. I'm getting lots of packet loss and performance is very bad. The connection is practically unusable. I've tried installing the compat wireless backport package but that did not work at all.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: VDPAU Performance On SMplayer & Compiz?

Apr 29, 2011

Using either MPlayer or mplayer2 under the video player SMplayer, when clicking on any drop-down menus, the video will freeze and then skip. Once the drop-down menu animation has completed, the video playback will play normally. This happens when using VDPAU to play back H.264 MKV files. Audio playback of the video is never interrupted. why VDPAU will not play nice with SMplayer & Compiz?

Ubuntu :: Ondemand Vs Performance - Increases The Clock Speed To Performance When The CPU Is Under Load

Jul 31, 2010

I just wanted to know if having my laptop set to ondemand, will this affect performance in any way? I realize it increases the clock speed to performance when the CPU is under load, but does the time it take to go from ondemand to performance affect speed? Will there be any noticeable difference between the two setups? I have a dual core intel at 2.2GHz when in performance. When ondemand is set with no load it downclocks to 800Mhz.

Ubuntu :: HUGE Desktop Icons?

Aug 13, 2010

I have taken delivery of a PsiXpda, which is a hand-held PC. It is running Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty) with Gnome and the default "Human" theme. As the machine was delivered, there was only one icon on the desktop. This afternoon I closed a window (after successfully installing Dropbox) to reveal the desktop, and discovered that this icon had increased in size enormously, taking up about half the height of the screen (which is 640x480). I have no idea why this has happened.I also find now that new icons I put on the desktop appear at this huge size. I can resize them individually, of course, but even at the smallest they will go to they are still too big, and in any case I want icons to default to the original, sensible (small!) size.

Ubuntu :: Call A Huge Nerd (via Ssh)

Dec 5, 2010

call me a huge nerd, but I have official control of my computer on my HTC Evo (via ssh) and I am ecstatic. I seirously just rebooted my computer for the hell of it. Anyways, I am trying to figure out some creative uses of this little trick. I listen to music a lot, and figured "hey, wouldn't it be cool to be able to change the song playing on my computer with the command line some how?" I use rthymbox to play songs, however, am not sure if this is/will be possible.

How can I go about changing the current playing song with the command line? Is there perhaps a shell based music player that can play audio though the computers audio output (while I run the command from my phone)?

Ubuntu :: Firefox Fonts Huge - How To Shrink

May 12, 2010

I was running SUSE 10.0 for a long time. At one point, I tried ubuntu 8.10, but went back to SUSE 10.0 because I couldn't take the huge fonts. I'm committed to running Linux (I'm a software developer with 25 years experience on UNIX and Linux platforms). I've been able to shrink the icon size on the desk via the file browser, change the other fonts, etc. - but running Google, and even this linuxquestions.org interface is an experience that's as if I had 20/400 vision (I have 20/20-30).

How do I shrink this? Zooming in and out from the "view" pulldown sort of works, but it's temporary - plus, doing that causes the resolution on the smaller print to get pretty blurry. Even the fonts and icons on the toolbar are HUGE! SUSE didn't exhibit this behavior - but I'd rather be running ubuntu, since that's what most of my potential employers are running. It would seem a certainty this has come up before, but I haven't found an answer yet. I'll use ANY font/configuration combination that will give me smaller print, that isn't blurry.
