May 31, 2010
I'v spent 3 days in google hell I'v learned alot but still cannot find a solution to my problem. I'm trying to use for a lack of terms 'Stereo Mix' I have Paltalk Messenger installed under Wine 1.01 everything works fine, including my mic I want to loop my sound from rhythmbox and play it in IM/Chats One of the Best resources I have found was Ubuntu 9.04 Sound Solutions Forum Topic
Every package is installed from the link above and I am able to record from rhythmbox using Gnome Sound Recorder but I am unable to send the sound to Paltalk. I'v also ran into a few resources that talk about creating a virtual sound card and then looping the sound back but I was unable to find a good clean howto I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 32Bit I upgraded all the pulse audio tools and now when I key on mic I can click my recording tab see my wine app and switch the stream over

I have been using ubuntu for almost a week. and i am impressed on how it seems to fulfills most of my computer needs better than windows. when i click the new message indicator (the envelope), and click chat, by default it opens empathy. personally i prefer pidgin, and i would like to make it open pidgin instead of empathy when i press chat. it currently shows pidgin in the list anyway but i want it to appear as chat.

1. My status selection has disappeared from the contacts menu (See #1 on picture). This lead me to a desperate search on how to delete/reset any config files for empathy. Tried to complete-remove and then reinstall it. This though didn't remove the settings or repair the glitch but instead led me to my second problem.
2. After reinstallation, this redundant little notification icon appeared (See #2 on picture). Cute... now how do i get rid of it? how to reset any empathy settings (problem one would at least solve then... I would presumably think?

Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer laptop last night. I wasn't able to surf the net at first but after searching these forums, managed to get it right (changed setting in firefox). I was able to use update manager and the software program ok (downloading and installing). I am using a adsl via wifi. Networked pcs and my NAS/samba work fine
My current problem is that while I can surf the net and download updates etc, I can't seem to get email and chat working, it just gives a timeout error for some reason.

I am trying to get my soundcard, Creative X-Fi Titanium HD, on my new Debian Jessie Beta 2 installation working. I can hear sound from the speakers and sound is getting recorded from my mic, but the output is somewhat connected to the input. I had the issue on my Windows installation and had to turn it down in my soundcard settings. But after playing around in alsamixer and trying to switch inputs and turning down/up the volume on different channels, I had no success fixing the issue.

I've got a problem occurring with my openSUSE 11.3 // GNOME Empathy Chat Client. When I try to connect to my Facebook account, my client tells me that I have a Network Error. Last time I used the client at home, it worked perfectly fine, but when I'm at work it doesn't.
Now, you guys may say that my work's network may have ports blocked, or the firewall is blocking its use in some way, but I find that hard to believe. My reasoning? I am able to connect to my Facebook account thru Empathy at work on my previous Ubuntu 10.04 system with no problems. I have also been connected to the same chat accounts this whole week on my openSUSE 11.3 // KDE 4.4 Kopete chat client. My Empathy connects to my Skype with no problem also. So, do any of you have any ideas that could possibly solve my issue? I love being connected to my Facebook chat at work because I don't see anyone nearly as often, and it's a great way for me to keep in touch with them.

I am trying to write a chat program with sockets as part of my project. I made a socket server, using fork ,I tried to connect it with different clients. Each client will send messages to others through server. So server has a shared memory storing every clients username and client id. But the problem facing is first client is able to sent messages to every other client formed after that. But second client onwards it is not able to sent message to previously connected ones. Server is not able to write on those client id's.

I've been using Trillian under Windoz, for one reason only - the email message-handling is amazing. Here are the features that impressed me the most with Trillian:
Check multiple email accounts + notifications (but that exists in many other clients)
Preview subject line + message body teaser (this exists to some extent in Adium)
Preview the above not only upon email-check, but in the client window itself or as tooltips when hovering over email-account name Email ACTIONS - right-clicking on individual messages, can perform common tasks (archive, delete, view, mark as read).
The actions available change for different protocols AUTO LOGIN-when double-clicking the account a browser window will open and automatically log me into the account That last feature is the most important one - at the moment, Pidgin/Adium/Empathy just send me to the email-account's homepage. I have (too) many email accounts, and having to enter login details to each is a pain. With Trillian, I could d-click an account, see my inbox, logout and then d-click another account - and be logged into that one... easy peasy.
Now, this is not a commercial for Trillian... really not. I just haven't found any other client that can do these things, nor have I found plugins for Empathy/Pidgin that enable this. I've been using Pidgin for now, cos it doesn't give any trouble with Skype integration (already tried the skype4empathyandpidgin, didn't work out) and has nice (not amazing) integration to the messaging menu.

I'm using Ubuntu 11.04 x32 Today I started Skype and I couldn't hear the Skype logging sound. Nevertheles I could see the contacts online. When I tried to write messages in the chat they couldn't receive them. When I tried to call nothing worked. After that it seemed that Skype was completely blocked. I clicked with the right button on the green icon of Skype and chose "quit" but it wouldn't close. 1 I logged off from Ubuntu and on again. I opened Skype. I made right click in the green icon and chose "Options"
2 I went to the "Sound Devices" menu in the left part of the window
3 I removed the tick for "Allow Skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels"
4 I closed Skype and opened it again and the sound problem was gone.

In ubuntu 10.04 my X-fi Fatal1ty Titanium sound card worked for my speakers but I had to use onboard sound for the mic. When I installed 10.10 the sound card no longer works at all so I have to run the speakers through the onboard sound.
The second problem I have is that Skype will not pick up my microphone all other programs seem to be able to record from the microphone just fine but skype does not. Ive tried selecting all the different input device options from the skype settings but none of them seem to work.
EDIT: Sound doesn't work at all in wine.
EDIT2: The X-fi card no longer shows up in the sound control panel.

I'm trying to get a game to work, the mac/wine client for Fallen earth. After reading a few things i was able to download the fallen earth dmg file (named fm.dmg now) and converted it to a img file (fm.img) using dmg2img. Then i mounted it using these commands.
neon@neon-laptop:~/Downloads$ sudo mkdir /media/mount
neon@neon-laptop:~/Downloads$ sudo modprobe hfsplus
neon@neon-laptop:~/Downloads$ sudo mount -t hfsplus -o loop fm.img /media/mount
I thought i was done. But it seems i cant copy the main file FEUpdaterMac.exe becasue i dont have permisssions. Tried and got the following
neon@neon-laptop:/media/mount/FallenEarth$ sudo chmod +rwx FEUpdaterMac.exe
chmod: changing permissions of `FEUpdaterMac.exe': Read-only file system
Now I'm stuck is there anything anyone can think of everything else seemed to copy but this file.

I've been playing EvE online for quite a while now in cedega, but since the last expansion it was crashing. I compiled wine from source and was able to get EvE to run quite nicely in wine, but cedega has window management that will let me run 2 clients. Anyway, the fix for wine was entering several registry entries manually. So what I want to do is find the cedega wine client and add the same entries. Im pretty sure this will stop the crashes and allow me to run multiple clients.

when I open Guitar Pro 5 in Wine (v1.1.40), there is no sound. I go into the audio settings to select Timidity, but it's not listed. I do have it installed and I can launch commands such as 'timidity anything.mid' to get it to play midi's, but other than that, it doesn't work. When I run Wine and launch Guitar Pro 5, I get this output:
Code:
ALSA lib conf.c:2700:(snd_config_hooks_call) Cannot open shared library libasound_module_conf_pulse.so
ALSA lib control.c:909:(snd_ctl_open_noupdate) Invalid CTL hw:0
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:947:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) The dmix plugin supports only playback stream

I have installed Tabit in my ubuntu 10.10 installation with wine (fully updated and configured) and i can not get any sound to output. I have FL9 installed with the same wine installation and I have no issues getting sound to output... Weird enough, I installed tabit in my unconfigured wine installation when ubuntu 10.10 first came out and it worked perfectly but now that I've formatted and reinstalled Ubuntu 10.10, I get no sound.
I would just like to add that I would just go to tuxguitar but my band members all use and are very comfortable with tabit so, if I can't get tabit to work, nothing else will work for me. Don't worry though, I love ubuntu and I'll stick with it on my laptop at all costs. I would just like the convenience of being able to use tabit and fl studio 9 while out of my room as to not wake up the wife and kid...

I am having sound issues while playing some games under WINE. for this I will use World of Warcraft as it has options for different sound engines. The problem is that I will have sound running fine for a while after a fresh reboot. It will seem fine for a good half hour to an hour and then suddenly it will stop. It will still be present in the applications list in sound preferences listed as 'ALSA plug-in [wine-preloader]'. muting/unmuting and adjusting the slider has no effects. Enabling and disabling sound in the game also has no effects. Here is what I have tried thus far to try to remedy it:
tried all of the various sound options in winecfg (some simply don't produce any sound at all on a fresh reboot - OSS, for instance) tried with and without padsp tried the various sound engines in Config.wtf tried WINE from the Ubuntu repositories and the developer's PPA tried lowering the sample rate and the bits per sample in the audio tab of winecfg tried fiddling with the sound preferences applications controls I am not adventurous enough to try to install OSSv4 so that doesn't seem like an option for me. it is important to note that sounds not coming from WINE function as normal even while WINE is producing no sounds.

I have Wine installed in ubuntu/Kubuntu Jaunty and I can play games like Roller Coaster Tycoon fine in it (it works great and has sound) but when I try to use my disk for Ear training (which is an .exe file) I can view/use the program perfectly except there is no sound, the disk works in the school computers so I know its not faulty, but the sound just doesn't work in Wine.
I changed the format in Wine to all the different Windows (Vista, XP, 2000, etc.) and the sound didn't work in them either, everything in Alsa mixer is turned up 100% and I've tested it with both my head phones and computer speakers, but theres never any sound.

I ended up upgrading my wine version to 1.3.20 before it was released to the PPA repos. I downloaded it via git, compiled & installed, but now it did not detect my drivers anymore. It even warned me when i ./configure'd it, but I didn't listen. I tried, also, remove purge all wine packages I own and reinstall them from Ubuntu, but the dud 1.3.20 version is still installed. Is there a way to bring the sound back? Or, is there a way to revert this installation and make me able to install 1.3.19 back?
The following message appears when I access the "Audio" tab @ winecfg:
Code:
Found driver in registry that is not available ! Remove 'alsa' from registry?
