Ubuntu Networking :: Unable To Check Email & Use Chat Client?

Just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Acer laptop last night. I wasn't able to surf the net at first but after searching these forums, managed to get it right (changed setting in firefox). I was able to use update manager and the software program ok (downloading and installing). I am using a adsl via wifi. Networked pcs and my NAS/samba work fine
My current problem is that while I can surf the net and download updates etc, I can't seem to get email and chat working, it just gives a timeout error for some reason.

I've been using Trillian under Windoz, for one reason only - the email message-handling is amazing. Here are the features that impressed me the most with Trillian:
Check multiple email accounts + notifications (but that exists in many other clients)
Preview subject line + message body teaser (this exists to some extent in Adium)
Preview the above not only upon email-check, but in the client window itself or as tooltips when hovering over email-account name Email ACTIONS - right-clicking on individual messages, can perform common tasks (archive, delete, view, mark as read).
The actions available change for different protocols AUTO LOGIN-when double-clicking the account a browser window will open and automatically log me into the account That last feature is the most important one - at the moment, Pidgin/Adium/Empathy just send me to the email-account's homepage. I have (too) many email accounts, and having to enter login details to each is a pain. With Trillian, I could d-click an account, see my inbox, logout and then d-click another account - and be logged into that one... easy peasy.
Now, this is not a commercial for Trillian... really not. I just haven't found any other client that can do these things, nor have I found plugins for Empathy/Pidgin that enable this. I've been using Pidgin for now, cos it doesn't give any trouble with Skype integration (already tried the skype4empathyandpidgin, didn't work out) and has nice (not amazing) integration to the messaging menu.

I have configured the postix email server in Centos. Its working fine with Squirrel mail client. But If I configured in microsoft Outlook. it is working. with this post I have attached the error message. Please let me know solution.I am getting this error message while I check the SMTP authentication in outgoing server tab on outlook account setting configuration.If I send any email It will bounce and came to to inbox

i have a dual boot PC with Linux and windows 7. I have observed that facebook chat doesn't work properly when i use linux. and some sites dont open quickly or dont open at all.But there is no such problem in windows. What to do?

we had a server with Hostway, and it was running ubuntu. The server also had Plesk installed, which did some funny things. We had several websites on that server, and many email addresses. Then we changed servers. Now we have a server through Rackspace and it is also running Ubuntu. It also has Virtualmin installed, which generally does not impose as many unconventional changes on Ubuntu as Plesk did.
Rather than using Thunderbird to download my email (which is what I used to do) I've decided I'll start reading my email on the server. So I will ssh to the server and then use some email client, such as Alpine, to read the email. So I installed Alpine. I have an email account for "lawrence". The email address is lawrence @ krubner. Currently, when mail arrives for that account, it is stored here:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new
and then it is transferred to hear:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur
When I start Alpine, while logged in as lawrence, Alpine automatically sets up an inbox for me here:
/home/lawrence/mail/
How do I get Alpine (or any other client) to read from the correct folder? I'm fairly sure the email package (the MTA) at work on this new server is Postfix. As near as I can tell, my email is held for 24 hours in this folder:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new
and then it gets transferred here:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur
Alpine only lets me set one path for my Inbox, so I'm not sure what path I should set. If I use "cur" I will see all email 1 day late, but if I use "new" then I will miss email if I go a day without checking.

In my Windows environment, I use email client such as Microsoft Outlook to connect to our email server to send email with the following configuration:
Incoming server (POP3): 995 - (requires with SSL)
Outgoing server (SMTP): 465 - (use encrypted connection SSL)

And the mail server requires user ID login and password.how do I setup a text command based email client in my Linux (Centos 5.1) to send out email through the existing email server above, which is in another machine? The email client has to be text command based because I need to use command line to send notification email from anothar application installed in my Linux (Centos 5.1) Since the email client will only be used to send email notification, I don't require setting up of an email server in my linux.

I have been using ubuntu for almost a week. and i am impressed on how it seems to fulfills most of my computer needs better than windows. when i click the new message indicator (the envelope), and click chat, by default it opens empathy. personally i prefer pidgin, and i would like to make it open pidgin instead of empathy when i press chat. it currently shows pidgin in the list anyway but i want it to appear as chat.

1. My status selection has disappeared from the contacts menu (See #1 on picture). This lead me to a desperate search on how to delete/reset any config files for empathy. Tried to complete-remove and then reinstall it. This though didn't remove the settings or repair the glitch but instead led me to my second problem.
2. After reinstallation, this redundant little notification icon appeared (See #2 on picture). Cute... now how do i get rid of it? how to reset any empathy settings (problem one would at least solve then... I would presumably think?

Every package is installed from the link above and I am able to record from rhythmbox using Gnome Sound Recorder but I am unable to send the sound to Paltalk. I'v also ran into a few resources that talk about creating a virtual sound card and then looping the sound back but I was unable to find a good clean howto I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 32Bit I upgraded all the pulse audio tools and now when I key on mic I can click my recording tab see my wine app and switch the stream over

I've got a problem occurring with my openSUSE 11.3 // GNOME Empathy Chat Client. When I try to connect to my Facebook account, my client tells me that I have a Network Error. Last time I used the client at home, it worked perfectly fine, but when I'm at work it doesn't.
Now, you guys may say that my work's network may have ports blocked, or the firewall is blocking its use in some way, but I find that hard to believe. My reasoning? I am able to connect to my Facebook account thru Empathy at work on my previous Ubuntu 10.04 system with no problems. I have also been connected to the same chat accounts this whole week on my openSUSE 11.3 // KDE 4.4 Kopete chat client.My Empathy connects to my Skype with no problem also. So, do any of you have any ideas that could possibly solve my issue? I love being connected to my Facebook chat at work because I don't see anyone nearly as often, and it's a great way for me to keep in touch with them.

I am trying to write a chat program with sockets as part of my project. I made a socket server, using fork ,I tried to connect it with different clients.Each client will send messages to others through server.So server has a shared memory storing every clients username and client id. But the problem facing is first client is able to sent messages to every other client formed after that.But second client onwards it is not able to sent message to previously connected ones. Server is not able to write on those client id's.

I have a simple home network with a windows and fedora clients. I'm running fedora 13, but I"m having problems connecting to the pc on certain ports from my windows pc. I can connect from windows to fedora using VNC, and even connect to my postgresql database. However, can not get connected to my Apache Tomcat or JBoss server. When I first installed the OS I went through and configured the firewall but have since disabled it (stopped service). However, I still can't get to the app/web servers.

I have Centos 5 installed on a PC in the local network. I have installed the RPM dhcpv6-client-1.0.10-16.el5.i386.rpm on this PC to configure it as DHCP V6 client. The RPM was installed successfully, and I have done modifications to the following files:
1. /etc/sysconfig/network, set the networking to yes.
2. /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth1 set the BOOTPROTO=DHCP.
Now the problem is when I start the client on this pc as dhclient, it throws the following errors, and logs out after some time. All the network configurations were lost and the PC gets disconnected from the network.

I am looking for an email client with the following specifications. I have trialled most of the commonly recommended clients but have found ongoing irritations that push me to keep looking.
Specifications
1. specific email client, not PIM
2. can run as a portable application or configuration files and mail can be stored remotely
3. minimal or no dependences
4. can scan for viruses

Evolution matches 5, 6 and 9. The program is a good general client but slow and glitchy. Can't scan for viruses in emails. Kmail matches 1, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 9. Does most of what I need with the powertools plugin but does not play well with Gnome. The program comes with too many dependencies that makes it very hard to move data around or even use on various machines. The dependence on the akonadi server is quite frustrating and makes this kde application a great product but only really useful on kde. Thunderbird matches 1, 2, 5, 8 and 9. Again reasonably comprehensive but lacks the basic ability to scan incoming emails (filters can pipe incoming data to an external program). The fact that the mail is intrinsically linked with your Mozilla profile makes working with the email file very difficult.
Clawsmail matches 1, 2 (old version), 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 (Windows Port old and not maintained) and 9. Looks good but appears to lack portability and a current windows version. I want to check my mail (predominantly POP accounts), have spam and viruses set aside/deleted/quarantined, have my attachments saved to a directory so my mailbox does not get too big and for the emails and configuration data be stored in a distinct directory that can be readily synchronized between computers. The program should be able to run on Ubuntu and Windows XP/Vista/7, on the same data once the data directories are synchronized. And no, I don't want an Internet based option like gmail or yahoo.

I have recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on laptop behind XP and Win7. No problems at all so far. Even got wireless to work (awesomeness). But trying to set up the email program it continues to say there's a problem. I'm trying to use Hotmail. And the way the email wizard? is set up it's a little off for me. I'm not too experienced with Ubuntu, or Linux for that matter. Mainly a Microsoft OS user. give me the info on setting up the email client to work with Hotmail?

I received a suspect E mail from paypal which I reported to them, I did'nt click on anything in the E mail. The Question I am asking is there any way that some one could get in to my email client Thunderbird or Firefox. When I used thunderbird to report the e mail I received a problem reporting that my email couldn,t be sent due to AOL smpt not excepting email because of ssl encrpyption. I checked the settings for the account all seemed ok ssl was still marked. Also while I was on the internet yesterday I got the popup regarding did I want to save a "file" I canceled as I didn,t click anything to download anything.

I can successfully connect to a remote Windows Computer using Terminal Server Client but I cannot save the profile (Fedora 12).This means I have to enter the details every time I wish to connect. I have a very basic install of dovecot and postfix on the latest version of Ubuntu server. This is an internal only email server with internal only DNS. I can send email via clients and check said emails via the command line when logged in as the appropriate user. I cannot for the life of me check said emails via SquirrelMail on the server nor using IMAP clients. I have no idea where to look and I can't find a basic tutorial for the life of me. Where should I start?

Our office has been using davical with Ubuntu Server 9.10 and it is working fine with Thunderbird 3.x and was working fine with Evolution but recently it has stopped working in Evolution and was wondering if anyone else is having the same issue? We have the most up to date version of davical on our server at this time.
