Ubuntu :: Login Background / Gdm Theme Has Turned Black
Jun 27, 2011
I just installed xubuntu natty, and the gdm theme (xubuntu-gdm-theme) has somehow reverted to something ugly. The background is black instead of showing xubuntu-greybird.png, the panel bar is light gray, and the shutdown button is now gray instead of a red/orange power icon.
The problem appeared while I was tweaking my account settings, possibly when I used the users-admin tool, but I'm not sure.
I tried purging and reinstalling the following packages:
gdm
xubuntu-gdm-theme
xubuntu-artwork
xubuntu-default-settings
xubuntu-desktop
...but that didn't help.
For comparison, I'm attaching screen shots of my (broken) gdm screen and a correct one from a virtual machine. (Try to ignore the fact that they're different screen resolutions.)

When Ambiance is selected as the theme, the broadcast box in the "Me Menu" is black text on a near black background. Changing the "Input Boxes" color changed the color of that boxes background on every theme except Ambiance. The problem seems to be with having "Controls" set to Ambiance, because having any other theme customized with Ambiance controls selected causes this bug again.
I really don't want to use any of the other themes because I find them horrid in comparison. how to fix this bug, or if someone would be kind enough to post a proper bug report for this? Can anyone else recreate this error on theirs?

Can't quite figure this out. My GDM is showing up with no theme whatsoever. It has a completely black background, boxy buttons, and ugly fonts. I can change it by going to tty1 and using
Code:
sudo -u gdm gnome-control-center

For some reason, from time to time on login, as my normal theme starts to load, it changes to some sort of silver theme (a very basic one), and I am unable to change it over to any other theme. Checking the theme being used, it still says my desired one is set, but it is not. Also, no matter what theme I change it to, that basic silver theme is the one being used. This includes a default icon theme, not the one I prefer.
The only option that seems to fix things is a restart, and the hope that on this login it won't mess up like before.I am using Natty, from a fresh install, with Ubuntu Classic as my desktop, and have reinstalled things more than once to try and fix a few of the Natty-related issues, but this one keeps coming back.

After dual booting into Windows to play Mass Effect 2, I hit the windows key by mistake, and the screen quickly turned black! Since then, I couldn't boot into Fedora, nor Windows; not even Fedora's linux rescue. I see the GRUB, I hit enter on any one of the two options, and all I see is a black screen!

I am using the elementary gtk theme, but I wanted to have my gnome-panel have a set custom background, so I went into the 'gtkrc' and commented out "#include "Apps/panel.rc"". This worked perfectly but, the right click menus and drop down menus changed color which conflict with the icons that I am using.

I turned on my computer today (running Ubuntu 10.10) and it will go to the login screen where it shows the time at the bottom right and the restart and shutdown button, and also my computer name in the middle of the screen but it does not show my account name. My mouse and keyboard work fine there is just know where to login at. I'm still pretty new to ubuntu so I'm not to sure where to begin.

I'd like to change the default transparency level for the gnome-terminal.The gnome-terminal has this setting in: Edit --> Profile preferences --> Background tab, called "Use background settings from system theme". Indeed, I can simply uncheck this setting and manually adjust, but then my changes would apply to all themes, if I were to change my theme in the future. How can I edit the transparency of the GTK theme itself so that it applies to gnome-terminal?I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with the "Ambiance" theme, and I'm seeing these files which are probably relevant. Am I on the right track? (those files don't contain anything obvious like "transparency" or "opacity" to change ... so I"m not exactly sure what/where to change)

I want to change the background image for a Plymouth theme on FC13. I'musing spinfinity and I'd like to just have a blank background or somesolid color rather than the Fedora logo. I've found the sprites in /usr/share/plymouth/themes/spinfinity.

when I get into the login page, I can only see the background and the login box in the middle of the page just turns whole white and keeps flashing. no response for any clicks. I was force to ctrl+alt+F1 to switch to init 1 to do my work. But I still want to use my graphical desktop either KDE or Gnome is ok. I am using gnome.

The wireless connection works fine. The wireless switch automatically turns itself on every time I start the computer. However, after turning it off, I can't ever turn it on again unless I restart the computer. And because of this, the wireless connection is disabled until the next time I start the computer.I don't think this is a hardware problem because the switch can be turned on and off, although not in the way I expect.
I'm using ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer Aspire 4740G. The command [lspci | grep Network] shows Atheros Communications Inc. AR928X Wireless Network Adapter (PCI-Express) (rev 01). the [rfkill list] command shows (when the switch is on)
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
and, as expected, shows (when the switch is turned off)
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: yes
I just want to be able to turn the switch on or off at any time I want as long as the computer is still on.

i am having a boot problem with opensuse.i installed a theme named suse-elegant under personal settings(configure desktop)-system administration-login screen.
i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot
note:the login theme also not working.
after the boot i restored defaults in login screen themes.it is also not working.
i don't know which cause this problem(vboxusers or login theme).i am also seeing a root user has been added in my login area.i tried opensuse failsafe also.

I was configuring the vnc server or remote desktop using the "gconf-editor" -- "desktop - gnome - remote_access" pane, and first I clicked on "disable background" to see if it was usefull or not to disable it (in terms of speed). It worked fine but sometimes when closing the connection, the background refuses to reenable, mantaining the black background...
That's ok, I decided to disable the feature and share via vnc the background as it is a wired net and I do not really need this feature.
My surprise is that now, whith the feature DISABLE (box unchecked), I cannot set a background, it is always black and I find no way to go back in this...
is this common, or something that can be "easily" fixed?

I have the latest version of ubuntu, my problem is my desktop background is black, when I shut the PC down the desktop background (the picture set as my background) flashes up, (the picture will change when I change the background). Looks like the black desktop background is hiding it. Also when opening emails with attachments the attachment opens then gets covered with the black background.

A rookie Ubuntu user, I foolishly downloaded iTunes and ever since that install (which has since been undone), my folder system shows a black background. The only way to see the files is to click and drag my mouse over the files in the system. Is there a way to fix this? I've attached a screenshot for clarity.

I've been running KDE4 with Suse 11.2 for about a year or so now, with no problems. Yesterday, the background to my screen suddenly went black. Open windows were unaffected, but I could see my theme, the task manager, etc. I couldn't open any programs other than the ones already open (and ones that they launch). This problem was system-wide, in that it affects all accounts on my machine.I thought I'd solved the problem after discussion with someone by email, by forcing KDE to recreate itself. I did this by
mv ~/.kde4 ~/oldkde4
then relogging. This, in itself, seemed to make matters worse, so I went
mv ~/.kde4 ~/newkde4
mv ~/oldkde4 ~/.kde4
and relogged. To my surprise, everything worked thereafter for a few hours.
I think this was coincidence, because, after a few hours, the same thing happened and the "fix" didn't work anymore.I checked .xsession-error and it says
/etc/X11/xim: Checking whether an input method should be started.
sourcing /etc/sysconfig/language to get the value of INPUT_METHOD
INPUT_METHOD is not set or empty (no user selected input method).
[code]....

Whenever I use code completion in Eclipse for a function, the function's PHP help/docs cannot be seen because it has a black background. How can I change this? I'm using Ubuntu 10 64 bit, default theme. Default eclipse theme. I've tried changing all the black colors in the Eclipse preferences under both Appearance and the other colors area to no success.
This is very annoying, as I cannot view help for any PHP functions without using my web browser.

I just bought this desktop from my friend and it runs win 7 and ubuntu 10.04. it worked very well the first two days until I changed the hostname of the system.
I did like: hostname myNewName
And everything worked fine. The problem now is when I start ubuntu and and reach username and password screen , I enter my password to login the screen becomes black and return me again to the screen where I put my password again. If I entered wrong password , the system message stating wrong password. On the other hand, when I try to run ubuntu from live-cd I can login easily and access my account.
My friend told me he removed Naultius package and reinstall it for some reason before he gave it to me. Note windows 7 is working properly.

When I activate the Ambiance theme, skype, opera, and probably one or two other applications have black menus with black text. It seems like the black background colour is being used from the Ambiance theme, but the menu text colour is not.
Could it be related to qt4? I just installed Opera qt4 because I read somewhere that qt4 would keep it closer to the theme or something.

I'm trying out slim - the login replacement for gdm/kdm/xdm. I find that when I use the special supplied Slackware theme, I can't see the cycling of the session names as I repeatedly hit F1. But when I use the default theme they show up just fine. Is there some special tweak to /etc/slim.conf that will make the session names visible using the Slackware theme?
