I got Ubuntu 9.10 running very well. ever since this morning when i booted i have that weird Panel on the desktop towards the left. It is showing basically the Application menu. I dont know why? I know i did not change anything. Also since this morning my right klick on the desktop nothing happen either? i dont want that on the Desktop!

The monitor configuration app always want the primary monitor to be on the left hand side, thus it always extend my desktop right. Can I do anything to extend my desktop to the left instead of to the right so I can have background application on the screen to the left?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI found that some application icons in the panel bar (at the bottom) is not shown correctly, which makes it hard to tell which application it is when I iconify that application. For example, the emacs application icon in panel bar used to be like a goat head. But now it looks like a generic icon, which I cannot tell it is an emacs application. It is showing as installed in gslapt, but it is not showing in the xfce panel's "Add New Items" menu. (see attached images) I tried rebooting and a few google searches. While doing this, at one point, open office changed the grid width and height to being really small. I changed it back to normal, but now even the font is really small, but the font-size is set to 10 px. I can't figure out (a) what happened, and (b) how to put it back to normal. I'll attach 2 images to make it more clear about what it's actually doing...

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a pull-down corner on both of my gnome-panels. If I hover my mouse over it, i even get the resize cursor, but you can't actually resize the panel. I'm also seeing them on my screenlets. See the shot below:
The pull-down corners are in the red boxes. It's very clear in the top box on the gnome-panel; it's a little harder to see in the bottom one on the weather screenlet, but it's there. I have a bottom gnome-panel, too, and it's on that one, as well. I just recently noticed them, but I'm not sure where they came from. Does anyone know how to get rid of them? It's not really causing any problems. It just bothers me because I'm a bit of a perfectionist. I've tried searching the web and the forums for a solution but I'm having a hard time finding anything because I don't know the official name for that design element.
Sometimes I get this ugly grey square in the system tray area of my panel. [URL] I'm guessing it belongs to an item that isn't there, but if I start an additionnal tray program, the new app doesn't take this place, instead it adds itself to the left of the tray. And it doesn't belong to a program that I used and closed, since it's there after a fresh boot.

In the past, whenever I used to update, I would get some sort of GRUB Menu (if that's what it's called) after reboot, and I would have no idea of how to get into Ubuntu. This would eventually lead me to uninstall Ubuntu via Wubi because of frustration and lack of answers on the internet.
But not this time. I want the solution this time so I can be successful in updating. Can anybody PLEASE tell me what happened all of those times, and what I can do to prevent it from happening now?
All I see are .mod files and .img files and 2 .lst files, but I didn't find any menu.lstshouldn't this file be here by default?how does xubuntu boot to this default partition? what was the setting?also, how do I set up multiboot with different distros? all I need to do is the edit the /boot/grub/menu.lst right and add the partition with the /root for that distro right?

Works fine with Firefox and all system windows, but is shifted to the right so that the close button is not visible when on Chromium. When I click on the maximize button(just barely visible, the Chromium window returns to the correct size.
When moving the panel back up to the top, everything is hunky dorkey.Are there config files somewhere that need changing to accommodate the existance of the left panel?Or any other ideas for solutions. Not a life or death problem, but a bit of an irritation.
I installed the Global Menu Bar applet for my top panel, thus removing the menu bar from most, if not, all of my apps on Ubuntu. I removed the applet, mainly because of how God-Awful and inconvenient it was. Now, I don't have any menu bars on my apps!

I have the problem that Window Selector continuously change the window list from one column to two columns of windows icons.
It is so impossible to click on a window icon to select it.
I've tried to set the size to larger and different sizes. I've tried to show or hide the panel. I've tried to group or ungroup windows.
Is there a way to tell windows selector to stay in one column windows list?
My problem is the links that are in the places menu in the gnome panal, all link to the appearances preferances. I'm running Fedora 14 with Gnome.

When I try to open some file, including directories, "Open with..." window appears.
When I open any application, instead of getting the application logo at the top left corner of the window, what I get is a button which on clicking drops down to provide me couple of options. I am using Ambiance Theme Can I move those options somewhere else on the top and get back the application logo at its place(which kind of looks smart and helps me differentiate between the applications in open windows faster) I haven't checked it in KDE but I am using Gnome(default with Ubuntu 10.04). And as far as I remember, when I was using KDE with Fedora 11(a month ago), I used to get the logo
View 8 Replies View Relatedi am having a problem on Ubuntu 10.10. In system menu, there is no Administration or Preferences menu.Also, application menu does not show anything. I am using Ubuntu since 2 weeks and still not used to to the terminal commands for running applications and admin tools.
one more thing.When i booted my PC today it reported an error and process terminated before reaching the login window. So i restarted and chose recovery mode. it also reported some errors and tried to fix the problem. it deleted some files i think. and my system is working again but with above mentioned problem.
I am using a widescreen monitor and prefer placing the panel on the left size. However, when there are more than 8 windows open at the same time, the window icons seemingly randomly shrink in size and form two columns. Selecting the windows on the panel takes several clicks and during each click the panel switches between the one column and two column states.

How do I add a new printer? CUPS asks for root's password, which is unknown/undefined. I tried sudo, but I'm not in the sudoers file. Catch 22? How do I add an application to the launcher on the left side of the screen? Drag & Drop does not appear to be available. How do I get back to the standard Gnome desktop?
View 9 Replies View RelatedSo I just updated my IdeaPad to Natty and played around with Unity. The performane was absolutely unbearable so I installed Unity2D from the software center. Now when I start the session everything seems to be fine at first. Whenever I move the mouse over the panel though it seems to switch to my old gnome-panel from the "Classic" session (with some missing icons). When I move the mouse over that panel again it switches back to the Unity panel style. What is going on? Can I fix this somehow? I will have to use the classic session until I get a working consistent behavior

My grub resolution has always been 640x480. after booting to the live usb & hard reboot(rseiub didn't work), the menu is shifted to the left and I can't see the left side of it anymore. About 1" of the words are not showing.I've changed the resolution to 800x600 and I can see it now, but wonder why it happened and how to get it back the way it was. Not sure what else may have been affected.

How can I close or unbind a port forcibly from command line?
