Ubuntu is automatically mounting all windows partitions. I wanted to mount only one common partition i,e NTFS storage partition to mount and used for both OSs i,e windows and Ubuntu. I unticked all partitions in NTFS configuration tools but in vain.
View 14 RepliesI am trying to setup fstab to automatically mount my NTFS partitions. I have used various Mount managers to create the entries in fstab. The fstab seems fine, but when mounting at boot or even via Nautilus I get the error message that I do not have permission to mount the disk.
1) Can this permission be set in the fstab file? If so what is the syntax of the fstab entry?
2) If not, is there a tool i.e. GUI to set the mount permissions?
I'm using Kubuntu 9.10. Partitions get listed in the sidebar when I open the File Manager, but they don't get mounted under /media until I click on the entries. I do not want to use /etc/mtab and mount them under folders I create in /mnt; would prefer if there was a way to mount the partitions without Kubuntu waiting for me to click on the names.

View 2 Replies View RelatedFairly new to Ubuntu (started with Karmic), now dualbooting Lucid and Windows 7. Lucid is automatically mounting my NTSC partitions, which is pretty convenient since I store all my media there, but I recently deleted one of the partitions and just extended the other one. Now Lucid is still trying to automatically mount the partition that no longer exists and giving me an error message every time I boot up. Not really a big deal, just a minor annoyance, but I'm wondering what I do to make it realize the partition is gone.

So, I have to open up a Terminal window, and issue sudo mount /dev/sda1 /media/Windows and everything is fine.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm running Ubuntu 10.04 on a VM and I'm trying to automatically mount two shares from the Windows Vista SP2 host. Currently this is failing with the message "mount error(112): Host is down".
I recently upgraded VMWare Server. Before the upgrade I was able to mount shares without a problem. I can still mount shares on the host using the builtin "Connect to server" feature in Gnome. The problem I'm running into is mounting shares via the command line or via fstab. The relevant lines from my fstab are below.
Just a couple notes: the IP address of the host is static on the virtual network, so using the IP address as the server name should not be an issue. Also, I am able to ping the host fine (which obviously must be true for me to mount using the Gnome feature).
I have beating my brains out trying to get Lucid Lynx connected to an SME Server 7.4 to automatically mount windows shares. The winbind stuff seems to work okay after I installed a restart script in /etc/network/if-up.d (kudos to OsGnuru & bobpaul for that) There is a short wait on network up before winbind can validate but that is not a show stopper. I have looked at (what I think) is the correct log for pam_mount and it seems to be running through to the end process okay. It looks like it is either not reading the pam_mount.conf.xml file or I have not configured it correctly as it just reports "No Volumes to Mount". I have appended the log file, pam_mount auth, password, session & common conf files as well as the pam_mount.conf.xml file for review.

Having read numerous articles on partitioning in linux I've gathered some ideas, still there was no let's say a clear explanation as to the sequence the mount points should be arranged on the disc...What I have in mind is to use a single disc space as efficiently as possible considering the head travel. The pc is a laptop, 160GB HDD and will be used as a normal desktop with some simple sound processing. Distro Linux Mint 10. I'm planning to have such partitions and all will come after a Win7 installation:

The placement also makes a difference as the closer to the inner rim of the disc the worse performance. I'm also not sure about the sizes. Read posts with recommendations but still judging by installations on a different laptop and virtual machine e.g. 5GB for /opt is a bit too much as there's almost nothing in there. Certainly /usr fills up, /var too from what I've observed. / also has scarce data in it so I'm wondering if giving them e.g. 5 gigs each won't be a waste of space resulting in greater head travel.
First of all: it's been more than 12 years ago since I worked with Linux, and a lot has changed in the meantime. But I considered it a challenge to install Ubuntu 9.10 and lateron upgraded to 10.04 LTS without any troubles, until now:
Except my main partition ("/") all other partitions fail to mount. All NTFS partitions from my other OS and also 2 other linux ext4 partitions I've made are not accessible anymore. and, what bothers me the most: I deleted those 2 new linux partitions in the meantime because I couldn't access them initially because Root was the owner (Duh! root is standard disabled in Ubuntu, right?). After an attempt to try to automount all partitions following the help guides I got now big grey errors on my splashscreen while booting, telling that an error occured with e.g. /media/Backup because it is missing or it cannot be mounted, with 3 options below: waiting, skipping or using a command prompt to solve this. I always choose Skip for safety.
Now if I want to see the content of all my other partitions I got a popup telling me unable to mount e.g. /media/Downloads and the message included:

I am installing Ubuntu on the same hard drive as Windows 7. The partitions of Windows 7 have already occupied the left part of the hard drive. From left to right, the Windows partitions are one partition for Windows booting, one for Windows OS and software installation, and one for data which is planned to mount on Ubuntu. I was wondering how to arrange the order of partitions of root, home and swap, i.e. which is on the left just besides one Windows partition, which is in the middle and which is on the far right?

What I'm trying to do is to grant my regular user to locally mount partitions and shutdown the machine without a password. Here is what I've done to /etc/sudoers:

I've created some encrypted partitions using Disk Utility, and would like them to be automatically mounted when Ubuntu starts up. Is there a guide to this anywhere?
I've gathered that it involves /etc/crypttab and possibly /etc/init.d/cryptdisks, but haven't had much success so far.
Ideally, some of the partitions would mount early in the boot process, while some of them can mount after I've logged in.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have various drives and partitions that I have been mounting through fstab, but sometimes I had to do it manually, but now, I can't get them to mount at all. At first I thought it might be a disk failure, but booting to a Live CD shows all the drives working fine. when the entries are added into fstab, $mount -l shows them as mounted to their relevant mount points, but the data does't show in either terminal or dolphin?
Typing $umount /dev/drive always returns /dev/drive not mounted.
When I comment out the entries in fstab and reboot and try a manual mount, I always get /dev/drive already mounted or /mount/point busy. $mount -l does not show any mount entry points for the drive. My /home/user partition is now full as I can't save data on the other drives, so I don't know if this is an issue. Also I use a mixture of encrypted partitions and non encrypted partitions, but this wasn't an issue before. Checking some of the logs didn't show any errors. The problem seemed to start when gdd was saving data to a partition mount point I thought was mounted but wasn't. I have since removed that data and even created a new mount point.
I've been trying to install Linux as a dual boot with Windows 7 on my Dell latitude e6510.It is currently running Windows 7 and I have used the MS disk tools to shrink the Win 7 NTFS partition to make room for Linux.The issue I'm having is that when I run Linux installers by boot from CD they see the entire hard drive as unallocated space. I have tried Ubuntu 10.10, Kbuntu 10.10 and Fedora 14 and they all have the same problem.I have also tried the Ubuntu "install in Windows" option and could not get it to work.EDIT:Booting Gparted 0.8.0 from a usb drive did not work. It reported the entire drive as unpartitioned.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop that I was dual booting with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I used the MSFT disk manager to delete the partitions. I made sure my windows live cd was working, which it was, before doing this. But now, when I boot my computer, it won't run the cd. All I get is
error: no such partition. and then a command prompt: grub rescue>
I made sure my boot priority was set to boot from the CD first.
I have been trying to DL the version of DOS-box I prefer to C:, but I made both the Win-lose partitions RO when I first installed / (call me crazy, but I was paranoid it might mess with an already broken install from nearly a decade ago with an OS that-shall-remain-nameless that's even older). Incidentally, I have learned from shenanigans with Linux-drivers from nVidia that /home partition is definitely a good idea (another post for another time)...
Anyway: even though I specifically made sure I turned the RO flag off but definitely made both Win' part's "usable" in the Installer from the NETINST live-CD. I had to format because GParted ("Partition Editor" under System -> Administration) wouldn't allow me to edit RW/RO thingy... Even when I logged in as / I checked in fstab, but there's no RO flags listed.
. I may be using the word "flag" when I mean something else. When you run the Lenny graphical installer, and choose to manually partition-edit, and then choose to "use" your [I chose] FAT-32 partitions, there's a few setup choices that become available. Including "its mount-point shall be..." and these Extra Choices I'm referring to as flags, that are "RO", "Quiet?" and a third one I can't remember... Time for sleeping!
I have dual boot on my laptop. First OS is Windows XP and second is Ubuntu 10.10.
When I click on places menu in Ubuntu, I can access Windowz XP Drives.
If I access some pdf file or document while in Ubuntu which is in Windows XP Drive, then it will come in Recent Document in Places menu.
Now I restart Ubuntu and click on Recent Documents and click on the document which I accessed in last session ( before restart ).
It says Unable to Open Document.
Then I click Places again and access my Windows XP drive. Then again I click Recent Document and click on document, I am able to open the document.
My guess is this happens because my windows drives are not mounted automatically when I start Ubuntu. How can I mount Windows drive automatically when I start Ubuntu.
