Did not find frimware other than from vendor. I checked openwtr, dd-wrt, tomato frimware. Have 2 broband routers. Standard wi-fi B. They can work as switch, router or gateway.

To make sure I have the latest packages installed, I no longer install anything from yum, I just compile them from source (or where source isn't available, from .rpm) directly from the application's website.
I was just wondering if there's a best practice about where to put application files that you compile yourself? Most of them seem to default to putting their files in /usr/local. What I currently do is then create symlinks from /usr/sbin, /etc/<appname>/conf, /var/log, /var/run etc. Is this messy? How should I be doing this instead?
is there anyway to get zenity 2.32.0 installed on lucid besides compiling it from source? because i noticed it was available for maverick.

I've installed CFEngine from source (for those of you who aren't familiar with the product, check out the wiki page) on an AIX server. I had some issues setting it up but finally got it to gmake successfully.
Once I run gmake install I get a very short output (based on other source builds) and no errors. I figure something is fishy and I now I need to figure out a good way to find if it was correctly installed. I tried:
find / -name cfeng* 2> /dev/null
Is there something analogous to rpm -qa | grep cfengine?

Kubuntu ships by default with a crippled K3b that won't rip DVDs to video files. Therefore I followed the instructions here to install it from source against libdvdread-dev. Now KPackageKit is continuously bugging me about 5 updates: k3b, k3b-dbg, libk3b-dev, libk3b6, and libk3b6-extracodecs. If I let those be "updated," I just get the binary versions of the same versions, without DVD ripping capabilities. Is there a way to get DVD ripping in k3b without APT continuously wanting to "update," it away?

I found that it is much different with Windows where normally the installed program is in one folder while in Ubuntu, the program will located in many folders. This is because I have faced problem in using the Kphone installed thru 'apt-get' and installed thru compilation of source code from tarball. I get quite bad voice quality when I called using Kphone SI 'sudo make install' from the source tarball downloaded from sourceforge.net. However, good voice quality is obtained when I used Kphone installed thru 'sudo apt-get' command. Is that the source code different or is that because of Kphone is differs with Kphone SI?

View 14 Replies View RelatedFirst of all I must say that I am new to Debian, but not newbie on Linux. I am the Arch Linux user too, and I managed to solve identical problem on Arch. So, as I want to try Debian I am facing the same problem again. Problem is that my GPU is overheating. I am using Ati open source driver. I installed it following the procedure on Debian wiki. On Arch I solved it with proprietary driver fglrx. I tried the same solution here but it doesn't work. So I am stuck with open source drivers.
The difference between Arch and Debian (fglrx vs. Ati open source) is 10 C degrees. Debian Ati open source is much hotter. And ofc I am facing the low battery life too, because of this. My laptop is using much higher energy consumption with open source driver (almost double). How can I check my energy consumption on Debian? I read about some xorg options. I tried it, but no effect. As I am on Debian testing I am using kernel 2.6.32. Does this kernel supports xorg video energy consumption options?
"The playback of this movie requires a SMB protocol source plugin which is not installed." I get this error when I try to play a movie from a samba share. This is a fresh install of Fedora 10 KDE. I installed all the necessary codecs using the rpmfusion repo. Movies play fine if I transfer them to my computer.

I have a problem about to open zebra service after install quagga by command(./configure ; make ; make install ) and add service port ("/etc/services")

and can't telnet to zebra

I have HandBrake 0.9.4 installed from Slackbuilds.org, but a new version came out yesterday that I want to install, but it isn't up on slackbuilds yet. Can I install it from source without doing anything to the old install?
When I installed it from slackbuilds, the slackbuild script also installed all the external multimedia libraries that I need. If I use removepkg (or whatever the command is) to remove the old HandBrake before installing the new one, will that also remove the multimedia packages that were installed along with handbrake? They were all built into the same .tgz
On my work computer so I can't do anything with it right now anyway, so maybe a slackbuild will be up when I get home.

I have used hcitool scan and found my device
I have done a cat of /dev/rfcomm0 and seen data streaming
I have seen a process id for gpsd as well as seen a listneing port for gpsd
I have been unable to get either gpsdrive / xgps / tangogps to see gpsd. All report it as not running.
