I want to build my own GNOME. The problem I have is that I cannot find the tarball for the GNOME source code. Another thing I've read on their website is that the way to build it is not the conventional './configure, make, make install', and that it has to be done using a multi-phase process. Is this correct?

Recenlty I installed sbopkg for maintaining slackbuilds scripts and I found it very useful. But there are some limitations coming from outdated repositories for older version of slackware. Eg. a tar ball with Maxima source maxima-18.1.... which is default in the slackbuilds.org repository for slack 12.2 doesn't exist at this moment. One can find older and newer versions. I understand that maintainers of slackbuild scripts are rather focused on recent slack version. Nevertheless such outdated entries should be somehow marked
in the way that a visitor will know that a default source tarball is no longer accessible. Maybe persons who submit the scripts should be responsible for keeping track for a sources. If that problem won't be solved it is a danger that slackbuilds.org will play only a role of some addons to the very recent slack release - but if this will be a case then simpler is to build say additional two or three DVD's of packages.

I am fairly new to Linux. I have OpenSuse Desktop 11.3. For a software package I need to install, I have to have Python 2.4 or 2.5 - it will not run with Python 2.6. I cannot find any way in Yast to install the older version of Python. So my question is this: How do I first uninstall Python 2.6 so I don't screw anything up, and then install Python 2.5? Is it as simple as using Yast for the uninstall, then finding the tarball for 2.5, unpacking it, ./configure, sudo make, sudo make install?

Is there a formal documented way? I have found a method of doing it, but I find it difficult to believe the ability to uninstall is not formally supported. [URL]
Essentially:
When you install - python setup.py install --record files.txt
When you uninstall - cat files.txt | xargs rm -rf
This will, however, require the user to look through files.txt like a hawk. It is really not an ideal situation I would think.

"The playback of this movie requires a SMB protocol source plugin which is not installed." I get this error when I try to play a movie from a samba share. This is a fresh install of Fedora 10 KDE. I installed all the necessary codecs using the rpmfusion repo. Movies play fine if I transfer them to my computer.

I am trying to install Homebank, a money manager. No problems untarring it. But I'm stuck on ./configure. When I run that command, I get this output:
Quote:
checking for a BSD-compatible install... /usr/bin/install -c
checking whether build environment is sane... yes
/home/Tom/Downloads/homebank-4.3/missing: Unknown `--run' option
[code]....
I'm guessing it's a simple matter of installing gtk and glib, but I just want to double check before I go any further.

This borders on stackoverflow/superuser, but I guess it's a simple installation problem.I've installed python-twisted on my ubuntu 10.04 server, but it can't be found. This is what I get when I try to import something:
>>> from twisted.internet import reactor
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "", line 1, in [code]....
I've installed the package through apt-get.That way the module is installed in this folder: /usr/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/twisted with an __init__.py file. When I try to use python setup.py install (on the download from the site) it installs it to /usr/local/lib/python2.6/dist-packages/twisted, but it also does not find it there.

I have a package (mlt-python to be exact) which can be found here: [URL]...ent/x86_64/os/ and it requires python 2.6. When I try to install it with yum, I get this error:
[root@chessman Downloads]# yum localinstall mlt-python-0.5.4-1.fc14.x86_64.rpm Loaded plugins: langpacks, presto, refresh-packagekit Adding en_US to language list Setting up Local Package Process Examining mlt-python-0.5.4-1.fc14.x86_64.rpm: mlt-python-0.5.4-1.fc14.x86_64 Marking mlt-python-0.5.4-1.fc14.x86_64.rpm to be installed
[Code]...
So Apparently I have python 2.7 and it needs python 2.6. Great. Is there a package that fakes python-2.6 and install anything?
