Ubuntu :: Import Music Through Said Program - Change Directory?
Dec 2, 2010
For some time I have been interested in life without a GUI, not necessarily living that life per-say but "interested" as a child would be about astronauts. So having taken said interest I've began to study it lightly at first, trying CMUS as my music player (A text based music player ran through terminal). I've also gotten a "Basic" (in the loosest of terms) understanding of how to import music through said program. Other than such, I know how to change directory, and see files via ls commands.
[code]...
I will sometimes elude me as to the full boundaries of it's uses; So I come asking this, amongst all of you does anyone live within a text based environment for extended periods? Days? Weeks? Years? What advantage does living a text based computer lifestyle give you against GUI folks?

All I want to do, is import all my other music files to Ubuntu, so I can play them on Rhythmbox music player. The other files are on my Windows hard drives though. Is there some way that I can just click a few buttons and import all my music?

What is the best program to use to monitor a directory and execute a script when a new file is dropped in the directory? I've searched Google and just can't seem to find what I'm looking for. I would like to execute a shell script after a .CSV file is moved to a certain directory to generate a chart of the data contained in that file. I've got the script, now I only need to know how to execute it when a new CSV file is dropped into the directory. The Linux Distribution is RHEL 5.

I am trying to use Rythmbox to replace windows media player, in Ubuntu 10.04. So of course, I needed to import all my music. So in Rythmbox I go to Music>Import Folder and then I simply select the correct folder, which is on a different drive. And sometimes, that works. even though it won't remember that I did it once I close Rythmbox. Other times, when I do that, Rythmbox simply closes right then and there, and has to be reopened. I don't really know what is going on here, other than what I would call a bug. But it never actually keeps the music file that I imported. I always have to re-import it, every time I open Rythmbox.

I have my data on an NTFS drive. When I try to import pictures from this drive, I only get an option for the drive. That is, I cannot choose a sub-folder from which to import. I understand I can tell F-Spot to use sub-folders, but I have many sub-folders with pictures, and I do not want all of them in F-Spot. Is there any way to import a single folder with F-Spot?
I have also tried drag and drop, but I have a hard time getting that to work as well.

I am trying to connect my 2nd Gen Ipod to Xubuntu and import my music collection onto the Ipod. I am having real problems with this. Rhythm Box does not recognise the Ipod with the plug-in, I have tried Amarok, but each time I tried to open it, it just crashed, tried sending a bug report but that did not want to work. I have also tried Exaile with the Ipod plug-in but when you go to the device manager you can click on the Ipod but nothing happens. I have tried looking at the Exaile forums but this seems to be a problem for others as well. The Ipod mounts ok, now a bit stuck.

I have a directory of about 1500 tagged mp3s (the directory contains a sub-dir for each artist which contains a sub-dir for each album which contains mp3s). What I am looking for at the moment is a player that allows me to import this directory once and then allows me to navigate the mp3 by tag. I have looked at audacious and abraca but either these don't have such a feature. How to me how to achieve what I need? I use 64-bit squeeze

I'm looking for a program to manage my music, and if I keep using Banshee, I'm likely to break something in my house. All I want to do is edit file tags (like genre, artist, and album title) - but it won't let me do that. I can't edit the files directly - first I have to get them into the "library", and in order to do that, I can't drag and drop them - it forces me to actually open up the files (which plays them, and sticks them smack into the middle of the "library", and I then have to go searching/scrolling through the whole thing in order to locate them and then finally edit them). And after all this, spending like 4 hours doing all this, I find out that IT DIDN'T ACTUALLY EDIT THE FILES. It edited them in its own mind - for the duration that they were in the "library" - but it didn't make a change to the actual files.

I am looking for a program that can organize music and movies BUT, heres the deal. What I need to do for my collection is be able just to go through the 1000s of cd's and dvd's and be able to type them in AND then once I'm finished I need it to be able to put all of them in Alphabetical order. You should know that a couple hundred are burned so they will not register inn an online database to be able to find album or actor info.

There's a podcast on the internet I love, and I would like to have them all in the same playlist. This podcast doesn't put their episodes in a playlist. Are there any software or scripts I can use for this to work so I can simply just type in the http://url/directory, and have all the mp3 files in a playlist. Or if the playlist part isn't possible, then at least a text documents with all the links?

I've found several posts discussing how to do this in with the terminal, but none exactly fit what I am trying to do. And since I'm still very new, I was hoping for some help.
I have a parent directory called "Music." The subdirectories all start with "artist", some go further as in "artist/album/cd1". So right now the structure varies in the following ways code...
How can I move all the files (or the file types that I choose) to the parent directory "music"?
(By the way, for any who are interested, this is so that I can use an external hd with a PS3. ("playstation 3"--for anyone who was in my predicament searching the threads)

I want to be able to open a file (support for .mp3 and .ogg a must) and add effects, change pitch and tempo, add beats (either default or midi created), mix with other songs (or clips from), be able to change levels of the high/mid/low, alter gain and frequencies ... all that fun stuff.
programs I already have are:
MixXx
LMMS (Linux MuliMedia Studio)
mhWavedit
-and-
gAlan
And it doesn't seem that any of those have the features I am looking for. I am running Zorin OS 4 (ubuntu 11.04 based) and Dreamlinux 3.5 (debian- unsure which release) on a fujitsu lifebook 5 series - S6240 (it's kinda old 2005).

I wrote a simple command line script which is suppose to take my screenshot every 5 minutes.(using ImageMagick's "import" program)
Here is the script (shottr.sh):
This is working fine if I execute by hand i.e:
The script itself is being executed (I hear a voice saying: "Screenshot") but the actual screenshot is not taken.
Be assured that it is NOT permission issue (I placed a simple "touch" invocation and file was created)
May be if it's run from cron...it doesn't have a "window" so it can't take a screenshot from nowhere? If that is the case, then how can I workaround it?

I have a large (~60GB) collection of music in various formats on my hard drive. It is organised in the form Artist/Album/*.ext
The formats include M4A, FLAC, MP3, and OGG. What I would like to do is convert the entire directory, keeping subfolders and ID3 information intact. I would preferably like to be able to do this with a single script.
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64. I am fairly adept with BASH and the command line, so I foresee no problems there. If I have to write my own script, these are the things I'm not sure about:
(a) maintaining the directory structure.
(b) how to tell the script which converter tool to use (LAME, FLAC, etc.
(c) keeping ID3 tags.

I found out where Ubuntu One downloads music from the music store. /home/user/.local/share/ubuntuone/Purchased from Ubuntu One/ I would like to change this folder to: home/user/Music/ Is this done in RhythmBox or Ubuntu One? Also, I moved the MP3s from the default location and they disappeared from my cloud storage, is it possible to turn this off? With a custom or default location? When does the sync take place? I know its after the purchase but it seems to take a while to start.

I like the convenience of having a music player that manages the placement of my music files based on the tags of the files, sorting into a root music folder with Artist/Album/01 - Track Title.mp3 sort of hierarchy. Previously, I was using Banshee for this feature, as even most of the other gui music players don't have this library management feature. Now, I've been trying to use console-based applications, and I have been using mpd + ncmpcpp fairly successfully. When I download new music, it is downloaded to a specific folder, and that's not part of my music collection. My previous workflow would be to open a gui filemanager at the downloaded folder, and drag and drop those songs onto banshee, which would then make a copy of those files in my library hierarchy. Currently, I'm doing the same thing, using Banshee only as a sort of import program, then closing it and updating my mpd database, and there we go.
If at all possible, I'd like to automate this to something where I can define a watch folder, and when some magical program sees new music in said watch folder, it identifies the correct place for the files to be copied into my heirarchy, renaming folders and files to the correct format. I know I've written a lot describing, but I don't actually think this too uncommon a task, and I'm wondering if anyone has a solution for my problem.
