View 1 RepliesNormally I just use the backup feature in evolution but how would I go about saving my emails if I wanted to import them into another email program?I am going to install Mint 9 KDE on a separate partition and I have found evolution does not play nicely in KDE so was hoping there was a way of importing my evolution mail into Mints KDE email program.

I have had nothing but trouble, and - judging from the extent of your forums - it looks like I'm not the only one.If this system is so great, why do so many people have so much trouble?
1). How do I import my Contacts, especially if Ubuntu's email program says it can't find my old Outlook?
2) How do I import my bookmarks, again, if Ubuntu's version of Firefox says it can't find any other browser?
3) If I go ahead and install this thing, and then decide it is too much hassle, how hard is it going to be to uninstall it?
I don't mean to be contentious here, but I really don't want to get into something that is only going to substitute one frustration for another, either.
I'm running Evolution 2.28.3 on the latest Lucid. I tried importing an Outlook pst file. Evolution obviously leads one to believe it CAN do this, otherwise why would it allow one to choose a pst file, then recognize it as an Outlook file, and give one the option of choosing which portions to import (i.e. mail, contacts, calendar, etc)?
So the first time I chose mail, contacts, calendar, and tasks. It seems to have imported mail and calendar correctly, but NOTHING happened in tasks and contacts (contacts being very important). So I tried again, this time ONLY choosing to import contacts. It went through the whole pst file again. NO contacts still. While it seems not to have duplicated email messages the second go around (and it shouldn't have), it DID duplicate all calendar items (even though I ONLY checked "contacts"). UGH!
It's one thing for it not to have a capability, but to make a person believe it CAN import all those things, then screw it all up, ... well, that's highly irritating.
I'm working in a school and we have a Apple server, we have many problem with it. So, I would install a linux server instead.
Anyway, there is just one big problem (or I miss a simple tip to do it )
We have 1300 students. If I must create them one by one, that will take a lot of time. Actually with the apple server, we can go on a web interface & import an excel list with theses columns :
"Name", "Login", "Password", "Class", "Group", "HDD Space", "Print quota", "Internet access or not", etc ...
Due to this tool, I can upload an excel files with my 1300 students & a couple hours after, they have an account with a personal space & a shared space with their class.
My question is : This tool exist on Debian/Linux world ?
I've downloaded configuration files for my VPN, Kovurt, and they don't have a .ovpn file extension. Further, when I tried to enter the information manually (using this guide), I saw that the files only include the <ca> tags, and no <cert>, <key> or <tls-auth> tags.
Here is the content of one of the config files, simply named 'Tokyo' with no extension. (adding .ovpn didn't work either):
Code: Select allclient
dev tun
proto udp
remote 50.31.255.86 443
resolv-retry infinite
nobind
[Code] ....
I have an open ticket with Kovurt asking for the other info, but I know already that they don't have much in the way of documentation or support for Linux.
I'm using kupfer 2.06, which is a tremendous little piece of software. The hitch is that when I use the evolution plugin to compose a new message, I'm only provided one email address per contact. I'm wondering if there's a way to designate a default or primary email address for each contact or some other way to influence this behavior. Not sure if the key to the issue lies with kupfer, its evolution plugin, or evolution.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI cannot get into my contacts, which are vital for my business. Arbitrary failures like this are unforgivable in mission-critical applications. When I click on Kontact it says "Akonadi not operational". Details shows the following: I do have libqt4-sql and python-qt4 installed.
I found that mysql-server was not installed so I installed it, but stupidly "Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost'", even when I use the password in mysql.cnf. I don't know what Akonadi, Nepomuk, or many of the other weird new services are, so am lost. My business-critical contacts are locked up and I cannot access them, probably through someone's stupid mistake.
Is there a Ubuntu email app (free or retail, doesn't matter) that will read in the Outlook Inbox/Sent/Contacts?
We have a really old computer with 10 years of Outlook business mail on it, and would like to switch it over to Ubuntu (no dual boot).
I am using Empathy messenger 2.32.1 on Ubuntu 10.10. The issue I have is that try as I may, I cannot get the 'ungrouped' list empty i.e. there are always 6-7 contacts during every empathy login session that show up as 'ungrouped' even though I specifically grouped them into a user-defined group during the last empathy login session. For e.g. I login into gmail and facebook during session-A and classify all my 'ungrouped' contacts into relevant groups. I logout and log back in to session-B, and now I still see some of my grouped contacts go back into the 'ungrouped' pile.
View 1 Replies View Relatedimporting GAL to evolution:
1. In Xp open MS-Access create blank database.
2. From File->Get External Data->Import, Select file type as exchange()
3. Import contacts to new table, u can delete unwanted columns from this table. Now export this table to a csv file.
4. Following is simple code which takes contacts.csv as input and convert these contacts to vcf file which can be imported to evolution.
5. The contact.csv should be of format
FirstName,LastName,emailID
#include <stdio.h>
#include <string.h>
#include <errno.h>
[code]....
6. uuidgen should be present on your linux box. you can have other validations and field too as per your need. but these three fields worked best for m
7. ./a.out contact.csv output.vcf Now in evolution go to Contacts->File Import->Import single file, select output.vcf and File type as vcf.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a hard drive which I have pulled from a PC running XP Pro. The drive is badly screwed by a virus. I have put it into my Linux machine running Ubuntu to pick off the files and docs I need.
I am looking to find a way to take off the emails on the XP drive from the outlook express software. The problems is I can not run outlook express to perform any export function. I can find the emails within the identities in the docs and settings but can not open or read them.
I have considered seeing if I can open them from a wine install and looked at a few third party converting tools which I have no knowledge of.
Related to my last post in that it is another email issue, but something else I am having a problem with.
Debian Lenny on virtual KVM (32-bit, v5.0.7)
With Postfix it is necessary to have an alias for root, eg: root: someuser
In theory, and as far as I am aware, this can also be something like: root: someone@someaddress.tld
When I use the latter, though, the following happens whenever my system tries to redirect root email messages, but not when I use the root: someuser method in the aliases file (and, yes, I do know to use newaliases after amending the file).
The firewall is not an issue (tested with and without the firewall), nor are the resolvers, and the DNS for accounts on the box is all okay and fully propagated. Also, changing the email address to something like this.address@google.com does not work, either, - same error message.
The problem I have is so simple yet difficult for me to resolve. My Postfix MTA allow fake mails from me@example.com to me@example.com. How can I block them?
For example, if I do "telnet smtp.mail.yahoo.it 25", as I write the MAIL FROM command I get the alert "Authentication required". How can I achieve that?
Could anyone point me to some simple articles that explain what email encryption is and how to set up a mail server (e.g. Exim) that can send secure emails? I know nothing about networks, mail servers, encryption, etc., but I have to be an expert on it before I walk into work tomorrow morning.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI'm running a desktop-less version of Debian via Sun VirtualBox. The reason I'm doing this is because I don't have enough graphics or RAM power to have a desktop environment running on top of my current desktop; also, I want to learn Linux through the command prompt. I'm running the AMD64 version of Debian; I'm not sure if that's relevant.
My main goal is to be able to email useful files from the virtual Debian to my main computer, so that I can save them for later if I ever decide to do a "real" installation of Debian on this computer. I realize now that there's probably some "easy" way to do this by reading the virtual machine's hard drive, but at this point, my curiosity wants to see this issue resolved. I started off wanting to find a command-line program to send my email with, and one was built-in. The syntax ~$ sudo mail -s "Subject" email@yahoo.com "This is a test email."
C^D
Cc:C^D ~$
is what I found. I tried it, and (unsurprisingly), it failed. I then learned that the mail command calls exim4, or something along those lines, so I needed to configure exim4. Soon thereafter, I learned that Yahoo's SMTP wasn't public, but Google's was. So, I found this web page which described how to configure exim4 to allow for email to be sent to a Gmail account. I made one, and followed the page word-for-word.
I sudo-mailled a test email to my Gmail account, and nothing happened. I waited a bit longer, and still, nothing happened. Finally, I started looking around, and found out about the exim4 logs in /var/log/exim4. In my mainlog, I think that it's telling me that Google denied my connection: <date><time><random numbers and letters> == **********.gmail.com R=send_via_gmail t=gmail_smtp defer (111): Connection refused
So, now, I'm just stuck. I don't know what I did wrong, I checked my exim4.conf.template twice for spelling errors, but I don't think I made any. At this point, I can only hope that someone else has had a similar problem, or knows what I'm doing wrong (or haven't done yet).
Does anybody really know how to import Outlook 2007 email and address info into evolution? I will never get back the hours of my life I spent. I have read nooks and crannies in the forums, run script files, incorporated, Outlook express, Outlook 2003 and 2007, Thunderbird and at one point yelled at my monitor. I have exported and imported .csv files, tabbed delimited files, comma separated value files, and then in the end a post from a non-Ubuntu page told me I could just import the outlook.pst file. Some of the above methods work to some degree. Others just trash my contacts. I have only 350 records to import. None of the above methods will import the address field for Home, Office or Other. They are always blank. Might that be because I ran the Ubuntu One setup files before I imported my contacts?

I've setup my own repository which I want to use SSH as the protocol. I managed to get everything working with an SSH key using port 22. Now, I would like to change the SSH port. I've already changed it on the SSH/repo server. Now I can't figure out how to change apt to use a custom port on the client computer.
My sources.list file line which worked over port 22: deb ssh://user@1.1.1.1/home/user/repo lenny main contrib non-free I've tried: deb ssh://user@1.1.1.1:12345/home/user/repo lenny main contrib non-free and it fails and actually says "failed connecting to port 22"
Can this be done? I've searched google for hours and I getting nothing but unrelated data. I've read the man pages. The man page for apt.conf specified that you can set the port this way for HTTP, but doesn't mention anything about ssh ports.
