Ubuntu :: Icon And Text Too Small @ 1920x1080?

May 26, 2011

I just bought a new laptop with 1920x1080 resolution. I installed Ubuntu 11.04 via "wubi" just now, however everything in ubuntu is too small to keep my eye comfortable. I searched the web and forum and tried to enlarge those, but the solution was about Ubuntu front and folder icon only (change in "appreance", and "edit->preference"). The front and icon are still small in other applications, such as Google chrome, firefox. Note: the change of front size in chrome and firefox only changes those on the page, but not page background, not the size in tab and anything else.

Fedora :: Icon Text Font Too Small In Activities?

May 30, 2011

I am using a 17" VGA monitor with 1024x768 resolution. With some tweaking, I'm pretty satisfied with GNOME Shell and its look. The only exception is the font of the text below the icons in Activities. On my monitor with this resolution, the text is just too small. As far as I know, it's the smallest text anywhere in the GUI. This is kind of an accessibility issue for me, since I do have a sight problem

Ubuntu :: Firefox Icon Appear As A Small White Pinned Paper?

Apr 8, 2011

My firefox icon in ubuntu appear as a small pinned white paper. But when I click on it, it launches the browser without any problems.It was like that in Lucid Lynx too. But My karmic had the proper firefox logo.Can anyone help me in getting my icon back?

Some one had told me that it would be there on the following directory.
/usr/share/icons/balanzan/scalable/apps and select firefox.png.
But I couldn't find it there.

There was no balanzan folder inside icons. I could find scalable folder inside default.kde4 folder.

/usr/share/icons/default.kde4/scalable/apps/
But there no firefox.png.

Ubuntu :: Simple Small Text Editor 3 Features

Mar 7, 2010

I am looking for an editor to fill a specific request for a mostly non-computer person. He uses a computer to write manuals and other books for classes he teaches. He has come to ubuntu so he can more easily access updates, gimp, etc. than he felt he could in Windows.

1) I need a text editor that can be kept open without bogging things down, or can be loaded fast enough to make him think it is "TSR" (made usable in either case by a keypress on his MS internet antique keyboard)

2) Spell check as you type with editable dictionary (he can add words that will no longer show as incorrect). Ability to select spelling suggestions easily (left click a misspelled word is his current method).

3) Ability to highlight words that most of us would call syntax highlighting but for words having NOTHING to do with a programming language etc. I would call it ability to edit the keyword file(s) to make his own languages to be highlighted.

Already rejected:
* anything with millions of complex keys to @#%$^%#$ remember that don't make sense
* gedit
* geany
* kate
* openoffice
* treeline (though he does use it for other things)
* tomboy (the cuss words there are an art form)
* anything emacs/vi or similar (see #1 reject reason at top)
* some gtk-nano clone he has no idea where he found

Ubuntu :: How To Launch Text Editor With Small Windows Size?

Apr 20, 2010

I'm looking for a programmable way to open an editor with a small window size. For example 60 columns and 3 lines. So I need an editor that can take its initial window size from command line args or environment variables, or possibly from an initial command that can be given on the command line.I've looked at documentation and experimented with gedit, gvim (and vi & vim), and nano and I don't think any of them can be controlled this way. Vi and its friends have a "window" option and also a "resize" command, both of which are described as setting the number of rows, but they don't change the graphical window size they just change the number of rows displayed in the window.

General :: Debian - Gnome - Metacity - Fglrx - Text Too Small

Sep 7, 2010

I am running Debian Lenny with Gnome and Metacity, and I've just installed the fglrx driver for my ATI card. I am running at a humble 1024x768 resolution, but I can barely read the text in many applications and on the desktop itself. Some programs are better than others, but for example, Icedove/Tbird's text is extremely small.

I encountered this thread: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...aviour-569624/ but wasn't sure if it was up to date or not.

I'm sure this topic has been covered plenty of times, but I'm new to setting up X/Window Manager/Desktop on Debian, and am not sure how to proceed. I've been using Linux for a couple of years but am relatively new to Debian (I started on Ubuntu - hence the being stumped by something like this).

Fedora :: Wrap Icon Label Text In Overview?

Jul 4, 2011

how to wrap the text in the overview for the icons I tell you I love opensource. Straight from some of the guys who wrote gnome shell, and yes the reason it was left out by default is because it has some quirks. Yes it wraps text - however if you have long words - like this_file_has_no_spaces then it will overflow into the icon on either side of it. But most application names have spaces. The obvious place you will see this happening is in recent items where that displays system files etc. The other issue is that when you hover/highlight an icon it will only highlight the first line of text. That's pretty much it and with a few lines of code then you can increase the font size of applications and don't have to worry about names getting cut off

Debian :: Text / Icon / Window Sizing And Changing Resolution?

Feb 17, 2015

I am running Debian Jessie with Gnome 3.14.2 on a Macbook Pro 15" with retina display. My resolution is currently set to 2880:1800 and any time I try to lower it, the whole screen goes to black (even if I change it to something in the 16:10 ratio) and I just have to keep force restarting when doing that. I want to lower it because a lot of stuff is really small. Certain aspects of windows in programs are so small, and in order to properly view stuff on my web browser I have to increase the magnification to around 250% for it to be reasonable.

Some things seem normally sized in the windows, and thus make things awkward on the screen, especially in chrome. Is there a way to fix this without having to change my resolution and/or font sizes? Making font sizes bigger on the gnome tweak tool makes things look a bit more awkward because it squeezes the text into small spaces. I would rather keep a higher resolution for a better picture, and changing it seems to mess things up. Here is what my browser looks like (without magnifying). Notice how the font size in the bookmark bar is disproportionately large compared to the buttons in the top right to close/max/min the window.

And this problem isn't just in the browser, but for example, in matlab everything is extremely tiny. I want to make everything larger, not just the text...

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Won't Recognize 1920x1080 Resolution?

Sep 9, 2010

I have a serious problem: I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my computer which has a Hanspree HF257 25-inch monitor with a native resolution of 19201080. I have an NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT graphics card, and before I installed the proprietary NVIDIA drivers, the screen resolution was fine, but after I installed the recommended drivers, the screen resolution went way down after restart!

The monitor is recognized only as a "CRT-1 (CRT-1 on GPU-0)″ under the NVIDIA X-Server settings. The highest resolution I can adjust it to is 1360768. I have no idea what to do, but I'm sure there's a fix for this, right?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 8.04 Can't Get 1920x1080 From New LCD Monitor?

Oct 12, 2010

I finally decided to replace my monitor. I got a HANNspree HF225 with a native resolution of 1920x1080.

Alas, my Ubuntu 8.04 only allows me to select the 1400x1050 (50Hz) as the highest resolution.

I tried using gksudo displayconfig-gtk, to no avail. (yes, I also tried selecting Generic LCD display 1920x1080).

The strange thing is the monitor itself (via its OSD information) says it is running 1680x1050 (at H: 65.6KHz V: 60.3Hz).

Clearly, Ubuntu 8.04 can't see the real hardware capabilities of my system. My graphics card is "nVidia Corporation NV44 [GeForce 6200 LE] (rev a1)". I know it is capable of delivering the 1920x1680 because it has been previously driving 1920x1600 on a DELL P1110.

how to get 1920x1080 on my system?

Ubuntu :: Cannot Get 1920x1080 Resolution On Natty?

May 23, 2011

I installed Natty about a month ago. First time i installed, i got this same problem.Installation pendrive works on 1920x1080, and the first time it boot it was lovely.I did all the recommended installs, including ATI / AMD proprietary FGLRX Drivers, and the second time my machine boot, it came on 1600x1200. I did some troubleshooting with xrandr, and was able to get HD resolution again, until i rebooted, and then i couldn't even get it with Xrandr.

This is really driving me nuts. I was able to get it fixed by going into recovery mode, and running ubuntu in low graphics mode, i was choosing reconfigure and it worked sometimes, but now i'm stucked with 1600x1200 and i hate it. I don't want to go back to windows, and i really followed every trhead i found with solutions and can't get it to work.I forgot to mention that i have an Ati Radeon 4670 video card. Also i am a total n00b on linux, i am good at following instructions though

Ubuntu :: Refresh Rate At 1920x1080 Resolution?

Mar 3, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10 I have ATi HD5700 and its Catalyst drivers downloaded from http://ati.amd.com

The monitor is Hanns-G HH251 (25", 1920x1080@60 max) I cannot make either "Display Settings" or "ATI Configuration" to show the refresh rate of 60 Hz as available. When I change the resolution to 1440x900 then I can pick 60 (but obviously I don't want that resolution). However, if I pick 1920x1080, the only two refresh rates available are 25 and 30 Hz, causing the image to flicker and whatnot.

I was able to get the terminals to run at 1920x1080 by adding Code: video=sisfb:mode:1920x1080x32,rate:70,mem:4096 to my grub command. Relevant section of my xorg.conf is:

As you can see I've mucked about a little bit with alternative drivers and resolutions and poked around via google without anything obvious popping up, but I suppose the driver is the issue. # randr only ever gives me 'can't open display'. I realize this is a new monitor on an older OS. Should I try the xf86 drivers from ATI, or will running xorgconfig do the trick with such a new card?
